VERY friendly staff. I stayed 3 weeks had no complaints except for occasional very minor glitches … normal for that duration. Those were addressed instantly. Room soon felt like a comfortable and familiar “nest” in Addis. Two restaurants were better than most external restaurants. Recommend.

No AC or fan. Room very hot at night, and when you leave windows open for some ventilation insects gets into the room and you can’t have a comfortable night sleep. Asked for a fan and they said they did not have, ended up leaving early before my planned check out and went to another hotel.

Everything works for me except that the Elevators are two small boxes for the entire building. I stand 12 minutes to get into one. Just pray there is no fire or emergency that you need to get out of that building fast. Otherwise, I like the service, cleanliness, and everything else.

The rooftop area was excellent for entertainment. Nice ambiance up on the rooftop with live music and djs occasionally. The cleaning staff didn't clean my room 2 of the 4 days. The breakfast which was included was served cold without burners keeping the food warm. Check out process took me about an hour. That's unacceptable.

Arrived and they had not held our reservation even though we had paid for it, they had sold the room to another guest. When they eventually got us a room it stank of cigarette smoke for the first two days, there was smoke coming into the room from somewhere but couldn’t work out where. This stopped on the last day presumably because the source of the smoke had checked out. Everywhere in the room was unclean. One night a Jack hammer was going outside the window until 2am and then at 3am someone started playing music very loudly until 7am. Staff couldn’t be less enthusiastic, just do not care. Elevators are a nightmare because only one works and they have a bar on the roof that anyone can use so it’s always full when you’re trying to get down or up to a high floor. Just overall a really rubbish hotel with apathetic management and staff.

I had a wonderful stay at Monarch Hotel. The room was comfortable and the staff very pleasant and helpful. This made the stay even more enjoyable.

The hotel has several restaurants. I liked the 360 restaurant that has a great view and is always lively in the evenings. I enjoyed the diner and drinks there on several occasions.

I was not able to experience the hotel due to lack of visa. I paid for Ethiopia eVisa to process in 24 hours. 5 days later i still have no visa. So I never made it into the country.

The hotel is good value for the money. The rooms are spacious and clean and the bed was comfortable. A church and mosque are nearby so expect early morning prayers from around 4 am. That and the dogs barking mean that ear plugs are advisable. The restaurant on the rooftop is popular with locals and the food is pretty good. I liked that the park was within walking distance. Overall, I enjoyed my stay.

Only 1 emergency exit

There are emergency exists that don't lead to an exit. When you leave the room they indicate right or left, those leading right take you nowhere. This leaves the hotel with only one way out (the main staircase). Unfortunately, I will not be able to stay there again due to security concerns.

Monarch hotel is located at Churchill road at the center of Addis Ababa. The room is clean and the overall service is excellent. They have a lounge called 360 at the top of the hotel which has a nice view of Addis. The service by Mesert Tadelo at 360 lounge is excellent .

Excellent staff & nice rooftop bar were the highlights. I think it would be helpful to mention the hotel construction is not fully completed - only one power outlet was functional in the room, the bath drain didn’t work properly and you’ll be standing in pool of water after 30 secs, toilet seat were not attached, no iron or board. And I suggest not to use the soap, very strong smell that follows you around for hours. Again, very helpful staff the whole time.

Checked in after a late flight. Asked the girl at the front desk if anywhere was open for food and she said that room service was 24 hours. Called room service and the person asked me why I was calling him in the middle of the night. Then I had the pizza and had the worst food poisoning of my life. Breakfast was ok though.

For no apparent reason, they filled the pool half way every day I was there.

The room was clean and the staff was mostly great. The security staff was particularly alert.

This hotel sells itself as a an urban boutique hotel, but really it’s barely a three star motel type of place. While the staff was friendly, the hotel has policies such as no replacement key card without paying a penalty, which are simply inhospitable. The pool, which was one of the main reasons I chose this hotel, was out of order, and the sauna and steam were tiny rooms adjoining the gym that were not separated for men and women. The shower and bath that was part of this “spa” area were dirty. Finally, late night music from the very popular hotel bar was audible from my room until nearly midnight despite having asked for a room on the opposite side of the hotel. And at 7am in addition to the hotel staff speaking in the hallways, and a random staff phone in the hall that rang repeatedly, construction Becton door made for a poor night’s sleep. Never again.

The Monarch Hotel is located in a great area for comfort, shopping and entertainment. This is my second consecutive stay at this particular hotel and there will be a third consecutive stay once I visit Ethiopia again. Many of the hotel staff members remember me from my previous stay at the hotel and they always make me feel at home throughout my stay there. I will definitely highly recommend this hotel to anyone who plan on taking a trip to Ethiopia and would like to stay in the Addis Ababa/Bole area. The bathroom sink and shower cublicle kept flooding repeatedly and the hotel staff would just clean the mess but not clear the drains. Even the bathroom lights wouldnt work, making it even harder to notice how dirty all the towels were.

Good hotel, but they were overbooked

I booked this hotel for a work trip and was looking forward to the comfort that was promised to me through the reviews. However, when I arrived around 10pm to check in, I was told an unclear story about how they do not have a room for me because of 'electricity problems' in the rooms. They said they'd put me up in a 'sister hotel' with the 'same standard' which certainly was not the case. I had to stay there for 2 nights and the only thing that looked edible in their free breakfast was toast and peanut butter. Thankfully, after calling them twice a day to check on the status of my room, I was accommodated in a lovely room - large, comfy, with all the necessities. The breakfast was good (the omelettes and coffee are great but the pastries aren't). The gym was perfect for my needs but no AC and in the morning the sun shines right into it (hot!). The bar outside looked fun but I did not have time to enjoy it. On that note, the bar area outside is quite loud. I stayed there over a weekend where they have a band, karaoke, etc. and my room was on the 1st floor so it was not a quiet experience. The housekeeping office was right next to my room and the phone rings loudly at all times of the day/night. I did ask them to lower the volume and they obliged. There is clearly an issue of noise control, especially on the 1st floor I guess. Other than noise and not getting a room for the first 2 nights, awesome hotel for the price and I would stay again but on a diff floor.

I don't mind compact spaces. Sometimes I prefer them. This hotel is nicely kept in general, clean, with a very nice outside patio and bar. It's a great place to visit on a weekend, but probably not the top spot for comfortable accommodations.

Number one concern: the rooms, bathrooms, and fitness room are too small. That might be because the beds are a good size (and very comfortable). But I had a lot of trouble finding a place to put my bags, fully open the closet, using the fitness room, and entering the glass-enclosed shower. If you are a larger person (I am not), you will find staying in a standard room quite difficult.

The hotel is situated in a convenient location with shopping mall around. Twin Rooms are big with separate dining area and sofa but without any view. Toilet is small and light is very low specially for shaving. Shower area is too cosy and very difficult to manage.

The hotel staff were most helpful and anxious to please. Unfortunately our booked room with two King Size beds was not allocated to us on arrival late Sunday pm 28th August. It took a little sorting out as we were a couple travelling with our 14 year old grandson. Eventually a room was sorted with one King Size and a single. We kept the room open all week even though we went on a 3 day safari down the Rift Valley from Weds to Friday. Overall we thought the Hotel offered good value for money. Close proximity to the airport and hotel shuttle most helpful.

This is the 5th or 6th time I've stayed here. The staff make the place. From the reception to maintenance folks they're friendly and helpful. They have rehabbed the toilets. They look great and function as advertised. I will ding them a bit here as the new shower facilities are not designed for a person my size. The bar is the prize here. Locals expats and outside. With a great staff. For me its a solid 4 star. I will be back.

You don't get what you pay for!

If I had been charged the regular room rate for this hotel ($95 per night) them my review would read very differently. For a mid-range hotel, the Monarch is good. It is comfortable and friendly with reasonable food and a lively outdoor bar area and some (not all) of the staff were very helpful. However, at the time of my stay the room price was more than double what it should have been as the hotel tried to take advantage of high demand during the African Union conference in Addis. I was paying $200 per night for a room with a small and not very clean shower with a broken shower head and leaking cubicle and not even a decent bath mat. There were two teabags provided with the tea/coffee making facilities which were not replenished during my 4 night stay. The Wi Fi was unreliable, the so-called \"spa\" was no more than a steam room cubicle which was not working and a small sauna cubicle. There was no way on earth this hotel was value for money at $200 per night. So the moral of the story is - escalate your prices if you wish but customers judge by value for money and this was a cheat.

Over the years, I've stayed at numerous hotels in Addis and throughout Ethiopia. This was my first time at the Monarch and I was really impressed with the style and condition of the room. It has a fresh, clean, modern aesthetic, unlike other higher-end Addis hotel rooms that end up looking stuffy or tacky. The hallways/common areas at Monarch are a little dark and shabby, but considering how big and comfortable the rooms are, this is no big deal. Staff were helpful and capable- organizing shuttle service, transferring restaurant bill to room tab, allowing late check-out, etc. I would definitely come back again- in fact- the Monarch will be my first choice!

The hotel is located walking distance from shops and eateries. However, there is no double glazing so the room can get noisy particularly for rooms facing the pool/bar which gets very loud most nights. On the lower levels above the restaurant you may here the swinging doors banging late into the night, and smells of cooking. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Internet worked well. Breakfast buffet is adequate. Hotel is well priced. The room has a small water heater so don't stand in the shower too long. Located only 15 mins from airport.

two nights of hell

The room, small but nice, everything looked great as you walk in the door. Great view over the pool area, lights of light and plenty of seats. Then I laid on what they were trying to pass as a bed. I think perhaps they missed the whole comfort and went straight for tortured instead. It's hard to explain, but the bed had a high side and a low side, like in a water bed when one person is grossly heavier than the person sleeping next to them. The low side was hard, no give, all take. The high side was worse. I think they must have only purchased mattresses that had been left outside in the rain the run over like a million times so all of the comfort had been totally used up. The bath was also small but everything worked, lots of hot water and plenty of hard towels. The fun part starts when the mosquitos arrived in the middle of the night, I am sure they came up from the pool which looks like it has not been attended to, ever. The water is murky green and full of debris. No screen on that sliding glass door with the great few so the buggies just come on I, and the reason the door is open, that's right no AC or ceiling fans. The the nightly taxi driver party out in front of the hotel entertains you as you fight the mosquitoes for ten minutes of sleep. I think I would have been more comfortable in a morgue. The staff however are over the top friendly and helpful, it's like they know how crappy this place is and just want to do whatever they can to make it bearable.
