The Fox Hostel is part of the Hrífunes Nature Park concept. Since 2017, we have welcomed guests to Hrífunes and gradually developed the park as a place where nature, comfort and thoughtful hosting come together.
Set halfway between Vík í Mýrdal and Kirkjubæjarklaustur, Hrífunes has long been a natural stopping point along Iceland’s South Coast. Travellers have passed through this region for generations, drawn by vast scenery and the quiet sense of distance that defines this part of the country.
The landscape is shaped by contrast. Glaciers and volcanoes meet black sand beaches, green valleys and wide horizons.
It is a place where nature sets the pace and where silence is part of the experience. The Fox Hostel grew from a desire to share this setting in a way that feels true to the place.
Before becoming the hostel, the building served as one of the largest sheep barns in South Iceland. Rather than replacing it, we chose to work with what was already here, allowing the structure to guide its transformation.
Inspired by Nordic building traditions and the simplicity of cabin living, the design brings together heritage and modern comfort through timber construction, natural materials and careful craftsmanship. Many of the spaces where guests now sleep follow the original rhythm of the building, offering a quiet connection between past and present.
The hostel takes its name from the Arctic fox, often seen moving through the surrounding landscapes. Known for its adaptability and resilience, the fox reflects the spirit of this place.
It is shaped by nature, responsive to change and deeply connected to its environment. Today, The Fox Hostel welcomes travellers from around the world.

Well, I wish they advertised that they didn’t have hot water. Then, I really hope there was a life and death situation that caused them to perform construction adjacent to our room at 1:30 in the morning with now warning explanation other than the front desk clerk responding to our inquiry with tea, they just told me. Do not stay here.

The air conditioning was not functioning properly during our stay. Additionally, there was early construction activity in the building that caused significant noise, disrupting our sleep. The disturbance was severe enough that we ultimately had to leave the property.

Mucho olor a humedad , agua fría para bañarse, la de recepción no tenia idea donde es el parque Dora Colon que queda a menos de 10 minutos del hotel , estacionamiento compartido con el hotel Meliá , estaba lleno y nos ofrecieron que pasáramos luego de las 11:00 pm a revisar si ya había estacionamiento, tuvimos que estacionarnos en el de Ponce Plaza por el módico costo de $80.00 por una noche

El estacionamiento un asco, supuestamente tenía que utilizar el del hotel Meliá y cuando llegué me dijeron que estaba lleno. Tampoco me dieron opciones. Lo único el aire acondicionado del cuarto excelente. Además el personal de limpieza u otro personal del hotel en la mañana un ruido en los pasillos demasiado y en las paredes. Desde el amanecer.
Por otro lado los cuartos no tienen nevera ni horno microhondas. Y la iluminación de los cuartos y del hotel muy mala. Dias en semana el lobby lleno de estudiantes de alguna escuela cercana.
En general deben mejorar mucho, pero demasiado.

The hotel is in a convenient location and the room was nice. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the room was clean. The bathroom had a slight odor, but it was manageable. The shower hot water was inconsistent, which could be improved. A mini fridge in the room would also be a nice addition.

My first comments of the hotel were good seeing it was my very first day here and I hadn’t even slept here yet. The staff is very friendly and professional. One major issue was the smell in my room. There was obviously a leak from the air conditioner so there was a nasty smell in the carpet. When I would be out of my room for a couple of hours and come back, the smell was awful!!!! However I didn’t complain. I’m a very simple person and I do not like to complain. I didn’t like the fact that there isn’t a phone to call down to front desk. There are plenty of places for drinks, food, and also souvenir shops close by.

Plenty of shopping and food/bars well within walking distance. However, don't plan on taking leftovers back with you, as there is no mini fridge in the room. Overall, the room was clean. I didn't have any issues with the a/c or the TV (though others in my party did). We all noted that the water pressure and temp were a little less than ideal but that could be a locale thing, as I haven't stayed anywhere else in PR thus far.

Check in and check out is easy and simple. There is no parking for the guests. The shared parking with another hotel is really small and it was full.

The downstairs lobby is dark and weirdly painted, dirty, smelly. The absolute worst hotel I’ve ever been in.

The format of this hotel is like some sort of bar with a bunch of loud video arcades, a small coffee shop and a sushi joint. The rooms are updtairs on the second floor. They also have a bar outside with a DJ playing music (it was a Saturday night).The rooms are very small, the bathroom was small and kind of awkward to use the toilet and shower. Pretty much good enough just to sleep. Theres street parking or they can give you a ticket so you can park at the Melia Hotel. There's a few bars near the hotel and some restaurants, it's located right in front of the. Ity plaza and the historic firefighter station.

The receptionist could have at least smiled, she was respectful but not very welcoming. The environment at the hotel was lively, and the area outside felt safe. The lobby area, especially the carpets, could use some maintenance. The biggest shortfall was the lack of available parking. The Meliá Hotel parking was full all the time, and we had to pay a lot of money to park at a nearby hotel. Had I known this in advance, I could have used that parking fee to stay at a nicer hotel. Overall, though, it was okay and served its purpose for us.

Si solo buscas un hotel para una noche es bueno. Si seran mas de dos noches no lo recomiendo. Pienso que podrias conseguir algo que te haga descanzar mejor. Este hotel es de estructura historica so no se le pueden hacer modificaciónes, por ende, hay detalles que extrañaras por ejemplo, ventana, nevera, hielo, agua caliente, ademas un matre comodo. El hotel es publico por ser historico, la entrada de todos los que deseen hacerlo es permitida hasta horas de la madrugada. El staff es amable, todo lo demas esta muy bien.

The place is retro chic the concept is very cute. There is no parking so you have to park a few blocks away and at night it just feels a little unsettling walking through streets your not familiar with. Calling the hotel questions weren't answered and they would hang up. The room did not have hot water had to take a cold shower which was not so great in the morning. The room was clean. No mini refrigerator, the wifi password did not work. Overall for a one night stay it was ok.

The people were nice and the plaza across the way was beautiful, but the overall experience was lacking. My windows were 8 feet up and tiny glass squares, there was no real hit water and i could hear everything going on downstairs. While it was an interesting experience and i dont regret staying, I have no interest in returning if I'm back in the area.

no ice buckets at all and i asked for towels they gave me a hand towel the elevator wasn’t working at all and will probably never work but they won’t tell you that… i called a week in advance and they failed to say about the elevator and they knew my son is autistic, they moved me to the MELIA across the street with the help with the suitcase and i paid a crackhead to help ‘me!
no ice buckets at all and i asked for towels they gave me a hand towel the elevator wasn’t working at all and will probably never work but they won’t tell you that… i called a week in advance and they failed to say about the elevator and they knew my son is autistic, they moved me to the MELIA across the street with the help with the suitcase and i paid a crackhead to help ‘me!

Good property but room furniture needed some care and shower pan was stained.

The property was nice, staff extremely helpful and friendly. The only thing that really sucked was that there was no and I mean NO hot water for a shower.

It was a last minute stay and served its purpose well. Internet was an issue at first but staff resolved it quick. No complaints
