The room had a dead bug on the floor in the bathroom and killed a few during the night. The smoke alarm was beeping. Management told me to take it down. They would try to get someone in to get down if i couldn't. I was so very tired after a long drive, i couldn't wait for someone to come. So I took ot down myself. Being 5foot 1 it was really hard thing to do.

Do yourself a favor and look at other locations. This property is not taken care of at all. The ceiling titles falling off the floor. The flooring was coming up in several location. The front door had duck tape on it because of the gap between the door and the frame was too large. The door didn’t close properly. The phone number on door was to the owners who when called the office manager and told her nothing about the reasoning just to call me. That property manager was very nice and polite under the circumstances. I felt bad that she even hard to work for them.

My stay was fine !! The motel it's self from what I could tell outside was clean inside rooms weren't fancy but did the purpose of what needed for my stay !! Staff was friendly and when ask for extra items always gave them to us!! Pool was not very busy so usually had it to yourself!! Could of used a cleaning along the sides mainly and little on bottom had built up other than that enjoy the pool for few hrs . Flys could be bad at times but didn't seem to buzz around close to ya though that's a plus!! Our door didn't seal as tight as I'd liked but managed!! Could fix door seals for more fit !! Had quiet neighbors that's a plus!! I would stay here again.

No office staff on site upon our arrival! Sign on office door said to call a phone number to get check-in info! Was told where to find our room key, which did not work! Called phone number again and was told to try alternate key. When we finally got the door open to our room we were met with multiple flies buzzing around the room! Then when we unloaded our luggage and attempted to hang up our dress wear, NO CLOSET/HANGING SPACE

The only good thing really was the pool, we had to call every time because the front was not open, even though it said it was, the toilet was so little my husbands knees were in his chest, the carpet needed an upgrade, it took the air conditioner almost 3 hours to cool the room, the shower took at minimum 5 minutes to heat completely to get a shower, I turned it all the way and it got warm so I got in after a minute or so, a few minutes later it actually got hot that I screamed and had to turn it way back
Our last day was packing to leave and our smoke detector started to go off, none of the people cleaning the rooms came over, until we went and told them it was going off and we did t know why, she came over disconnected it and pulled the battery
Again the pool was very nice, not extremely big but nice and clean, did need a new gate as it was falling apart to get into it
It was our first time trying this hotel and to say I wish we would have spent the extra $25 and stayed where we normally do is an understatement

This place was unacceptable. We arrived at check in time and no management or staff were on the premises. After a phone call with other waiting guests, we were able to retrieve our key from a box. I reserved a room with a \"kitchen\" but found the stove dirty with two burners disconnected and broken, a filthy microwave, and a dirty fridge. There was no deadbolt on the door, and you could see daylight between the door and the jamb. The single hotel washing machine was out of order and full of water. The dryer was out of order and full of rolls of toilet paper. Seriously. We witnessed two other families call management, request a refund, and promptly leave. We did the same. Fortunately, we were able to find a much better place a few miles away for a few hundred more and Expedia immediately started the refund process. Stay away from this place. It’s a dump and needs new management.

The location was excellent to attend the Pony Penning fair. It was almost too excellent, because on the day of the event, the streets were all blocked off and it was really hard to drive around. It's a little off the main tourist area, so it was hard for little kids to walk to where all the restaurants and activities were located. And this was probably a fluke, but our room had a lot of flies in it, so we spent an hour or so chasing them down and killing them.

Great location but updates needed

This is an old, dated simple hotel. The room was okay, the pool was okay, the grounds were a bit sloppy.

It has an excellent location and for the right price I would stay here again. I personally do not feel the room is worth more than $150 per night before fees and taxes even during high season.

The workers were nice, some didn't speak much english. The room was infested with flies..had to buy fly spray and swatters. Missing parts on cabinets. No utensils or pots and pans for kitchenette. Stove was filthy. Washer & dryer was out of service the whole week. Fridge wasn't turned on. Walls were dirty along with floor boards. Smoke detector unhooked. Floors were dirty. Beds were okay. Window was filthy. Bought cleaning supplies to sanitize the room. Coffee pot was dirty. Had to call a number to get any type of service..they closed the check in counter for most of the day. Water damage to one wall.

Motel reminded me of motels that people live in full time. Our room had coffee but no coffee maker an ironing board but no iron. They had a picture of a pier on their website but there was no pier. There was a very loud party in the next room that lasted well into the morning but I never saw a manager or the office open just a note saying if you want to check in or need something, call a number. Horrible.

The plastic pool chairs were broken so you could not lay back in the sun. Nobody was in the office, you had to make a phone call and when somebody became available they would either meet you in the office which was always locked or they would come to your room to see what you needed, so you had to wait before you could go anywhere

There was no Air conditioning turned in and the room was disgusting. We promptly left and found far superior accommodations in Chincoteague for only slightly more per night. The room smelled of mold throughout our entire stay, even with the ac running. stay. There was a used wash cloth hanging on the back of our bathroom door when we checked in. The room was serviced daily and it was never removed. there was a smear of dirt on the bathroom wall upon or arrival and was never wiped off. there was no one in the office when we stopped in on three different occasions.

This property usually has decent rooms, but the larger kitchenette room is terrible. There was a mildew smell i was trying to mask, floors felt uneven underneath, the space was outdated, and I had bed bugs on me after slept. Also the kitchenette has no pots, utensils, or plates - so bring your own. Of course, you get what you paid for, but you're better of staying in one of their basic rooms which aren't bad.

Birchwood Inn was fine other than a bit of mold in the bathroom. But our stay was sadly interrupted by some very rude quests in the room just down from ours. Very loud, drunk and disrespectful. Would suggest the Inn have some check room 3. A lot of slamming of interior/exterior doors and loud banging on the walls. Would have reported on departure but the office was empty, as hope to assume had also been the night before since our rooms were close to the office so they would have heard what was going on.

We were traveling as a family of 4.. so space is generally a constraint at other places.. we normally book Airbnbs but since it was an impromptu trip, we searched and found the family room here and booked.. This place really exceeded my expectations.. very clean and super spacious.. it had 3 beds and a futon, a work table and chairs, breakfast table and 1 lounge chairs.. it was like a large size studio apartment.. it wasn’t luxurious but was updated with white kitchen cabinets, fresh walls etc and clean. I noticed door deadbolt wasn’t working but it still locked fully.. would stay here again.. can’t beat the convenience if you are traveling with kids.. for perspective, the normal hotel room is probably half the size or even smaller..

Don’t do it. Save your money sleep in your car.

We had to stay here in a bind. My 16 year old daughter was terrified because of the state of the room. There was mold in the bathroom and heater. Chunks of “wood” missing from furniture, signs up that said you couldn’t plug two things in without losing power… just bad. I wish I had taken more pictures. I took this one to send to my partner back home after I figured out why my face had swollen up (I’m allergic to mold).

This property is just outside the downtown area in a nice quite location. It share's a a driveway with residence. The lady we spoke with at that residence gave very helpful dining suggestions.

The office is unmanned and we had to call a phone number posted on the door for instructions. No problem. Our key was waiting for us in the little mailbox by the office door. The first room we were told to use was clearly unmade as used towels were piled up on the bed. We called the number again and we're told to try a different room. We chose room 5. It was better than the first room and appeared to have been attended to.

We're pretty laid back and weren't worried about staying there. That said... the room had clearly not been dusted or thoroughly cleaned in some time. The drop ceiling had bugs or bits of who-knows-what in places, and the bathroom was a little dirty. The tub/shower needs maintenance. The bottom surface is peeling up. We didn't try turning on the water.

If you're on a tight budget, this motel is functional and the are seems very safe.

I really want to love the Birchwood! I don’t need extravagance just a clean place to sleep! So I keep this in mind when I look at budget friendly hotels. They really have potential!

It looks like they started doing some updating. Painted the walls updated flooring. The bed was nice, newer, with clean linen and comfortable. The bathroom looked like it was clean. These are the pros.

Now the cons: First of all there is never staff in the office. Check in is finding doors keys in a mailbox. No one answers either of the numbers written on a piece of paper on the door. There was another guest who sat in her car an hour waiting for someone. We had to tell her to look in the mailbox for a key. This was after 9pm and she was alone. She tried calling phone numbers as well.
Husband brought fishing gear and we tried to call the number to locate the fishing pier advertised. Never answered. Went to the dock to fish.
Lastly the rooms just need finishing touches and proper cleaning. Tub and shower were clean but the caulk was missing and that space made the shower look dirty. The floor wasn’t updated and needed a good scrub it was dirty. The wall outside of the tub needs drywall repair and paint. All really easy cosmetic fixes. And please get your housekeeper a vacuum. Our floors were not vacuumed when we got there and they were visibly dirty.

It’s really a great location in such an awesome town. Would love to see the hotel brought up to its potential.

Clean, comfortable, and peaceful stay.

We enjoyed our late September 2024, 2 night, 3 day stay at Birchwood. The room with amenities was slightly different, but substantially similar to the photos. The bathroom, linens, furniture were very clean and comfortable. The flooring is light brown color and looked clean and nice. We didn't notice that it wasn't well cleaned until we were walking around in our bare feet. We had quiet, peaceful and good nights sleep there. We didn't have anyone in the rooms beside us. Due to the weather we didn't try the pool, but it looked cleaned and well maintained. There are some nice cookout grills and picnic areas which we didn't use. Beautiful rose bushes skirt the parking lot.

It's not a luxury motel, but nice, comfortable and clean.

We couldn't always contact management. The office was sometimes closed and phone not answered during posted open times.

This was our first time to Chincoteague Island. We were really taken by its quaintness. Birchwood Inn is located just on the other side of the street from the Chincoteague Bay waterfront properties, so we were able to enjoy the view of the water. It is right beside the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department's fair ground, which was closed during our stay.

One caveat is \"The Causeway\", Chincoteague Road, from the mainland to the island lays only 1 foot or so above the water. Heavy rains or turbulent weather may cause the road to be closed at short notice blocking entrance and exit to the island.

I recommend Birchwood Inn.

Despite our late arrival, the staff was exceptionally communicative and responsive. They arranged to leave our keys outside the office and provided clear instructions over the phone on how to check in. The office was also closed at checkout, but the same helpful staff member guided us through the process by phone. The motel offered great value for the price, though we were surprised by the low occupancy—fewer than five cars in the parking lot on a Saturday night. We had expected a bit more activity, but it was unusually quiet. Not sure why, but it made for a peaceful stay.

I don't mind older motels and in fact really enjoy a nice old school vibe as long as they are clean and the bed is comfy and this was. But it did seem like this place was a bit beyond the dated furniture. The kitchenette was really not usable. No pots, pans or utensils were provided and the metal bases under the electric burners on the oven were rusted (one was completely missing). The cosmetic issues with the older appliances were touched up with a different color of paint, giving it a vibe of custodian dealing with lewd graffiti on a middle school locker. The gate to the pool was in need of repair. There were just a number of issues like that that made it feel a bit depressing and rundown vs. just in need of a makeover. Location was great so spent most of the time out of the room anyway.

The pictures are very misleading. This is a Motel. Not to be confused with long stay villas and condos. This is more of a glamping place. No front desk staff. You call the number and they tell you get a key from an unlocked box that has everyone elses keys in it with all their personal information attached to it.
The pool is ran down. The property is not on the water. We walked in our room. Infested with flies. But no worries. They left us a fly swatter with dead flies on it.
There was a hole in the wall. The appliances were disgusting. The smoke detector was covered in plastic. I woke up and was scared to use the bathroom without thinking something was going to run across my feet.
Why didn't we leave?!? The road to get here is pitch black and surrounded by water. We left soon it was daylight. Not worth the money or time spent. I

basic average property. One thing to correct would be damage in the bathroom. It wasn't substantial but it should have been noted by the hotel because when there is existing damage in a room, the hotel guest has a fear/concern that they will be blamed for the existing damage. Bed was comfortable.

Nice place, family owned hotel. Across road from the water. Theres a nice pier to walk out on the water if you want. The room had a nice cold fridge, microwave, ice machine was close by. Small pool was great for my daughter. Rooms all on 1 floor, chairs there to sit outside. The pool closed too early for us, but we understood. We had a great time, got food delivery from a local restaurant, and were able to find lots of things to do.

Beds are small..not queen size..not very comfortable but I don't like firm mattresses.. Walls are thin and you can hear your neighbors talking when you're trying to sleep.. you could also smell them \"smoking\" so the smoke comes into the rooms around the door and window. All the chairs at the pool are broken so you cant lay out. Place is pretty clean and not a horrible place to stay so we would prob stay again.

The property is definitely in need of some care and attention. The pictures on the website are very misleading, seemingly from 10 to 15 years ago. The room itself was not in the cleanest of conditions. Stains on the wall and splatter on the ceiling. The furniture was pretty beat up, with chunks of wood missing from the desk and table. The bathroom left little to be desired with the silicone “grout” (lack of a better word) actively coming out of the shower wall and the floor being stained a dark yellow from years of use. If you really don’t care about where you stay while on vacation, then this place is for you. Otherwise, spend a couple extra dollars elsewhere and have the peace of mind when you go to sleep at night.

Observations: flies all over the room. Yes it’s near the bay but fly traps or nets might be useful because you legit sleep with flies all in the room with you after killing many a day.

Property was dirty and very dated. Coffee pot in room had dust inside of it. Build up of mold and mildew in tub.Everytime we opened the door flies came in the room. Dirty ash trays outside of rooms. We will not stay again.

Disappointing.

I was a little disappointed due to the disrepair of the room. The bed and sheets were nice and comfortable but the bathroom mold was something i coule not get past. Cleaning girl knocked loudly at 930 am asking if we were leaving as she needed to clean our room. Our checkout time was 11 and we had an alarm set for 1030. Just rude. Also this form would not let me upload pictures

The toilet was broken. The end table was broken leg could not use. The floor was dirty never cleaned anytime of our stay. The pool was nasty so much bug and the chairs were broken at pool and gate was broken to pool some much weeds and vines grew over the lights around pool. No hair dryer and coffee pot was broke. It was very quiet there peaceful but needs more TLC and updated get rid of old broken stuff

This was the cheapest motel on the island and it showed. When you first arrive, know that the office may be locked, you gotta call them or just get your key out of the box they have right outside the door lol. The room I was assigned smelled strongly & nauseatingly like cigarettes, had dirt on the bed, and a disgusting & unusable fridge. Smelled like straight mold because there was a wet towel, actual spots of mold, and something odd wrapped in foil ?? So gross. Had to switch rooms and the next room was mostly cleaner, had small bugs in the drawer and a beetle in my wash cloth, and you must know you gotta wear shoes!! The floor had my feet covered in black dirt I had to scrub off. Also came home at midnight one night and my room key did not work so I had to call likewhy can’t I get into my room? and the lady said “I saw your room key was going to deactivate today, so we made you a new one and it’s in the key box.” Wasn’t super happy that they didn’t tell me anything when they saw it, like I guess it makes sense why because I switched rooms but there was no communication at all so I had to have this confusing & frustrating ordeal when coming back late at night. This place isn’t totally horrible, probably better for someone who doesn’t have ocd because the bugs and dirt had me unable to relax or sleep, but I just had to share the disappointing facts of my experience this weekend

Our first, our last stay.

The front desk receptionist and another staff member were both very kind and did their best to make us uncomfortable, however the condition of the motel was disappointing. Our room smelled heavily of cigarettes and while the staff did spray our room to help with the smell, it would not go away. The sheets smelled like cigarettes and the A/C unit just circulated the smell althroughout. It made it difficult to sleep all night. Also, the bathroom sink faucet sprayed everywhere when you turned it on but when you tried to decrease the water slightly it just shut off entirely. Also, we came to check in maybe half an hour past check-in and the credit card we used to reserve the room was already authorized for the stay. We wanted to use a different card, which was corrected but I thought it was a strange practice not to give the guests time to change their payment method when check in time wasn’t even an hour in. I wish we had a better stay, but we will not be returning here. The staff did the best they could, but the condition of the hotel was hard to look past.

Don't usually leave reviews. This place could be a decent place if they kept clean.

The first room had a refrigerator that was turned off so freezer thawed into it. It was also dirty and had black mold spots in it. When we opened the door it made the whole room smell like mold. They gave us a different room with only a refrigerator and a small microwave (we booked to have a kitchenette with a stove). It seemed ok and we were only there for 2 days. Upon further inspection and during our stay we could see that the place was just not really clean. The bathroom floor had dirt in all the corners and mold on wall by tub. We also had a roach crawling around. We will never stay here again!

The only thing we liked about this place was the fact that the beds were new and clean. Everything else needed updating. The room was mildewy smelling. While it was described as having a kitchenette, there was no table and chairs on which to eat. There were no utensils; usually the basics are provided. While there was nothing in the cabinets there was a sticky film. The bathroom needs an update and it would have been acceptable but the shower was meager as most of the water was coming out of the tub spout. In spite of no refunds available, we left.

The people that work there are PHENOMENAL. The place is a little older but had all the island life amenities we needed. A soft, clean bed. A hot shower with good pressure. And black out curtains. Our room also had a kitchenette and a big mini fridge. Employees were kind and attentive. Great seafood restaurant up the road a bit, amazing access to the National Seashore. We were there end of March 2024, so off season. The island is a wonderful adventure. I don't see myself returning during peak season due to sheer volume of people but I'd definitely come back off season. Several restaurants available.
