We booked rooms at the Beijing Hotel because we remembered it from 40+ years ago, when it was Beijing's premier hotel. Unfortunately, the hotel is now a shadow of its former self. The occupancy rate at the hotel seemed very low. We were told that heat would only be provided after 11/15. Our rooms were in need of renovation. The food in hotel restaurants was poor, and the restaurants wouldn't allow us to charge meals to our room or pay by foreign credit card. On the plus side, the location remains great.

Time for a renovation

I usually stay at China World but wanted to try something different. Bad choice. Service wasn't great. Check in was straightforward but they don't bother to help you to get a taxi. Condition of the hotel room was old and worn. I'll much rather book the hotel next door Nuo in future.

The best hotel in Beijing in the center of town close 5 min walk to forbidden city and Tianan men square but the people in the desk is nasty do not speak at all English and do not care for the American tourists and just can not care less but l go there all the time like every month or every other month.

Great location near Tienanmen square, forbidden city etc. The hotel has good bones but has definitely seen better days, The bathroom grout etc is shabby and the carpet in the halls has a peculiar odor. The staff was generally indifferent, but then on the last day we finally got someone to help us, and with a smile.

Very well situated. I had an excellent stay. Thankfully there was a blanket in the closet that I could use instead of the comforter, but I had to put it into the slipcover myself. I much prefer blankets to comforters and assume that there must be others like me. There are two kinds of tea provided, but the kind I prefer (jasmine) was not replaced as I would have expected, so the third day I had to drink the other kind. The plunger mechanism in the washbasin did not work very well, again a minor complaint.

located in the center of the city within 5 min walk to Tian An Men square and 2 min to the best street for shopping. Nice and clean, the staff is ok and their language is a problem just no English at all and just do not care to learn or help

Terrible ! Ac not working called desk sent maintenance to turn on Tv ( for real)
Went to fron desk suggested opening window in smoggy Beijing !
When indicated that was unacceptable. Asked them to repair . Desk simply said \"NO\"
We checked out same day and went to Fairmont Beijing.
Beautiful lobby rooms on exec floor just worn out ! Completely dated
Stayed at crown plaza Xi'an and fairmont Beijing . Both really good and less expensive !

great hotel, many fantastic restaurants, the best location in Beijing, walk 5 minutes to Tianmen Square and 10 munites to Forbidden City and 5 minutes to the best shopping in Beijing. THE HOTEL IS FAMOUS FOR BEING HEADQUARTERS FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES. THE ONLY PROBLEM I SEE IS THE LIMITED ENGLISH OF THE STAFF. BUT IF YOU NEED TO TALK TO THEM ALL DAY THEN GO TO HAYATT AND PAY 2-3 TIMES MORE AND FEEL LIKE YOU ARE IN USA. AND IF YOU MISS USA THEN DO NOT GO TO CHINA. Beijing's classic old hotel stands up to time.

When I first came to Beijing in 1983 we stayed in a Russian hotel but were brought to this hotel as part of a tour - it was Beijing's only international standard hotel. It is still in very good condition though the style seems more of the 20/30s than 1974 when it was built. It is in a great location for walking to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden city.

The location of this hotel is superb, very close to wang fu jing. Close to a lot of places if you want to shop around. We wanted to experience this once was the most extravagant hotel in chian for so long. It was a pleasant stay I say. Not as bad as many reviews on here. if you are looking for a more modern touch, then this is not the place for you. But we were not looking for that type of stay, we knew what the rooms look like and we knew that it is rather traditional. But that doesn't mean the rooms are not fully equipped, everythings there for you in the room, besides we don't as much as young people need these days, we were very happy about our room.

An average hotel. Service does not live up to the 4/5 star billing. A great 3 star hotel, but does not cater to international travelers in any meaningful way. Stay at Raffles right next door. I know I will next time.

To our surprise, our attempts to secure a taxi brought the hotel to its knees. Eventually, we resorted to wandering the streets until a bellhop from a neighboring hotel took pity upon us and secured transportation on our behalf. Also, the halls smelled funny, and the repairs to our aging room were haphazard at best. Finally, most hotels that cater to westerners tunnel the internet through Hong Kong so that Google and friends work. Not this one! Be sure to set up a VPN before you stay here, or be prepared to deal with the great firewall of China.

Famed old hotel

Beijing Hotel used to be THE hotel in Beijing 30 years ago. But now it's old, and its rooms, esp. the bathrooms, are not as nicely done as others, the newer hotels. The service is good. But the breakfast that's included in the pkg sucks.

Beijing Hotel is a fine Hotel in the best location. Service can be better, but it is still the best place to spend a day or two in Beijing. The near by Wangpujin street is a must in the evening to experience Beijing at night.

Great location.....nothing else good to say

The location is PERFECT.
The hotel needs some updating and the staff have an attitude problem.
The first room we got smelt like sewage. They only had 1 other room available that was smoking when we booked non-smoking.
The hair dryer was broken and took almost an hour to get a new one.
Toilet in the room almost never flushes.
There is no wifi in the rooms, need to go to the lobby to use it.
When I checked out they billed me for the minibar and phone calls from the first room that smelt like sewage. So I ended up having to pay for someone else's expenses.
And I used to live in Beijing and I am Fluent in mandarin. If you can't speak mandarin. Good luck with thus hotel.

This hotel was considered the best one in China for quite a long time. Although the facility is not that new, it is quite comfortable. It is in the center of the city. I had a wonderful time staying in this hotel.

Badly need renovation but great location

This is one of the few still state owned and operated hotels in Beijing. I really regret booking 2 nights here. The bathroom is so old and dirty. It literally stunk. They should just re-gut the whole place. Breakfast is outrageously expensive, $30/person. We ended up spending the same across the street at the Grand Hyatt enjoying an absolutely fantastic meal. It's got a golden location. Walking to WangFuJing, Oriental Plaza, and TianAnMen is very easy and quick. We fell for the name and location of the hotel, but it's not an enjoyable experience inside due to the outdated interiors. 2 star is the most I can rate this one.

Not happy at all when they tried to short change me with a lousy room when we booked for a room with Forbidden City view and it was past midnight when we arrive so we insisted on changing the room which is quite unsettling. Hotel toiletries are not complete bath robe is torn and no coffee in the room!

Great Getaway and Location

While the location of the hotel was excellent, the room was comfortable, what let it down were the hotel staff - mostly unhelpful, never smiling and very poor English spoken. The concierge didnt want to help or was intesrested in assisting and didnt speak English! If I ever go to Beijing again will stay in the hotel next door, the Raffles Beijing - superb staff, very friendly and better hotel.

Comfort amidst tight security in Central Beijing

One must be impressed with this hotel in the heart of Beijing because of the richness in its history. Beijing Hotel is indeed unique, reminiscience of foreign's imperialism being started by the then Imperialistic French, re-built and was a key establishment in New China whereby many Chinese and Foreign Dignitarians were housed and lived in. There are 'traces' of such memories ubitquitiously in the hotel today.

The location of the hotel is perfect, right next to the famous TianAnMen Square, Forbidden City and the People's Congress Building to the West, to the East, the heart of Beijing Commercial District, with shopping Malls, food courts etc...Wangfujing the popular tourist area is just at its doorstep.

Perhaps the timing, the hotel's security was extremeely tight with full bodily security check in force 24-hour daily. Fortunately such inconvenience perhaps discomfort were mitigated by the usually friendly, polite and even helpful security police officers. And depending on one's perspective, the roads along the hotel were swamped, literally with security personnel becuase of the security requirement in force which made one either feel extremely safe walking around or at time, uncomfortable because of the constant 'servillance' one is subjected.

The room and the service of the staff is a bit run down. Room because it is perhaps a very old hotel made new superficially. Staff because too many VVIPs are around, which made services to ordinary guesses a bit insignificance.

On the whole, it is value for money in view of the positive side. some of the aforesaid negativities were due to Double National Meetings in Progress at the People Congress.

If you're looking for a dirty place, this is the one!. Everything was full of dust, walls, balcony, TV, table, etc; also, the bathroom full of hair, not mine because I'm bald. Bad smell inside the bathroom because the poor ventilation. it is an emblematic hotel but the attendants barely speak english.
If you don't want to stay in the middle of the dirt, don't waste your money here. It says it is a 5 star hotel, I don't give 1/2 star.

i booked beijing hotel for its superb location for
tourist. Getting around is easy.The room is big and comfortable although hotel is old. Serivce wise is acceptable. Wanfuching subway stn is just infront of
the hotel, however taxi fare is cheap if you have a grouip of 4 paxs. I will try other modern hotel during my next vist but beijing hotel will still in my list. You will not be disappointed in staying in beijing hotel.

nothing like what I expected for a 5 star hotel

From the outside, hotel looks like a huge block of flats built in the 50's. Unlike other hotels in China, the door men do not even acknowledge your presence or offer any greetings. On entry into the lobby, it looks and feels like you have entered some central train station rather than a hotel. The quality of rooms, bathrooms and over all decor is far from 5 star - feels more like 3 star (even curtains too big for the windows and falling off their rails). The hotel is in sore need of a major renovation. Don't be deceived by the official pictures available on the net.

On the plus side, the hotel is right next to Wufunjing station and shopping precinct including the old street which is a must see. Also walking distance to the Forbidden City.

Some of the staff were helpful and one even tried joking.

A JOKE, do not stay here unless yo ulike old stained rooms, bad restaurant and overall bad experience.
Bath Room was stained and old and rusty. Lobby huge but cant wait for anyone and sit down as there is only 2 chairs and 1 couch and lots of people.
REstaurant is terrible. 1 espresso and 1 coffee 20.00. ordered ceasar and a cream of tomato soup, soup was cream of water, ceasar was iceburg lettuce with smoked ham and ranch dressing.......just a joke........only thing good is the location

The hotel is worngly rated as 5 stars its maximum 3 stars hotel. Dirty rooms , staff doesont know english . rooms are so dirty . baths are so old and dirty and has not mintenance . it is so expenisve .
To take any thing from the bar is so exagurated and expensive .
You ask for any thing you may may get it after 1 hour .
no wi fi at all in the hotel , if you need to use the internt to you have to pay 120 rmb /hour which is so so expenisve .
You can find some perons in the lobby asking you if you wanna have aldies!!! which is so strange in any hotel !! and how they allow him to do this !!!

I do not recommnd this hotel at all !!!

Tourists Beware

Breakfast was not included in our room rate, and the hotel restaurant price was crazy high because they knew the surrounding area was mostly hotels with few places to buy breakfast. Since the area is mostly tourist hotels, people on the street try to sell you anything and everything - CONSTANTLY ! The room itself was clean and comfortable, and the location close to Forbidden City, Tianenmen Square, and the subway station, but be wary of \"helpful\" strangers.

This hotel has the potential to be a truly magnificient property if it is tastefully refurbished. The plastic flowers in the revolving front door should be discarded.The mild dew in the bathroom is disgusting. Unfortunately, this is a common problem in many 5 star hotels in China!

I was looking forward to staying at the Beijing Hotel - and booked a room with view of the Forbidden City. The view was quite good but the hotel not worth the money. I stayed in far better hotels in Beijing for much less. Here you are paying for the view. Staff were not friendly or helpful - seemed more interested in groups.

Location location location...

For me, location is everything. This hotel is strategically located and near everything I wanted to visit. ..... Tianamen Square, National Museum, the Imperial Palace....... Also, the subway is just outside the hotel and very convenient. Will definitely stay there again if I visit Beijing next time.

They do not have any wireless internet. In the lobby the vast expanse of limestone, they have a couch and 2 chairs, it is the only place to get wireless internet and it is not even the hotel's internet!!!!
The location is superb, the windows that overlook the Forbidden City were dirty but given the smog maybe that is too much to ask. The rooms are getting old, I could not find a menu for food in the room so this place does not deserve a 5 star rating.
The area around the hotel is full of fantastic shopping, the Forbidden City and high end cafe's. Just around the corner in the basement is an amazing food hall, just look for the fiberglass Buddha with his hand out in greeting. All and all I would stay there again.

Looks good, but not easy to get a taxi

The hotel looks great!
And, the location is nice for travelers. However, most workers in the hotel do not speak English, and taking a taxi at the front gate was really hard for me. Many taxi drivers denied to deliver a foreigner. Perhaps, that might be common in Beijing. In addition, the hotel never tried to prepare taxis to take hotel customers. Not even in a rush hour, taking a taxi at the Beijing hotel is really terrible.

The Beijing Hotel is very conveniently located

The Beijing Hotel is very close to Tianamen Sq. and the Forbidden City. There are very good restaruants in the hotel and very close to the hotel (both Western and Chinese). Also the Beijing Hotel is connected to The Beijing Raffles Hotel and they share a work-out room and a very large swimming pool.

The only complaint that I have is one day the hotel had some kind of plumbing problem and when taking a shower the water turned dirty. It took a few minutes to flush the dirty water. Otherwise the hotel is very comfortable and very conveniently located. I would definetly stay there again

The hotel has a great location. However, they did not change my bed sheet etc for 3 nights I stayed there. Bathroom and amenities are relatively good. Service is sloppy. Breakfast is terrible except for the usual fruits. Not bad for the money paid.

It is surprising that a 5 stars hotel has no Wi Fi in the hotel. At least it should cover the lobby area.
Its business center has only 3 computer and one in English .
I went to Business center many people waiting to use Internet.
If some body does not carry computer with himself /herself or carry iPod, like me which needs wi fi , Beijing hotel is a wrong choice.

Dirty bathroom, Unfriendly Staff

The hotels location is good but the staff were unfriendly. When we arrived at the hotel our room was on the 12th floor. we paid extra for a room with a view of the forbidden city and were very dissappointed with it. The bathroom was dirty with hairs in the sink, on the towels, hairdryer and floors. I would strongly NOT recommend this hotel to anyone.

This hotel is in a very good location but the service and conditions of the hotel is at a 3-star level. The room is very old and tired.

They supposed to provide two bottles of free water to each room but I only received once in three days while I was staying there. Also， it's hard to get a tax and the help staff seems not care if we can get a tax or not.

The hotel is rather dated and seemed to have some deferred maintenance issues. The toilet and shower both blocked during my stay.

The staff speak very limited English and I found myself using the concierge at the Raffles Hotel which is connected.

Restaurants are quite expensive even for a 5* (although I would rate this as a 4*) and wine was ridiculous. $95 for a bottle that would be $10 in the US.

The hotel is in a great location, but beware, it is not in the location marked on the hotels.com map. The hotel is actually right in front of the Wangfujing subway stop. It is still within a five minute walk to Tiananmen's Square and the Forbidden Palace. Being so close to a subway station makes travel to the rest of the city easy too. If you don't like Chinese food, there are plenty of western style options in or near the hotel. There is an Outback Steakhouse in the hotel and a McDonald's, Subway, and Dairy Queen in the mall across the street.

No 5 Star Hotel for sure, maybe 2

This's my first Beijing trip, saw and heard so many warnings before about the dirty hotel room, rude staffs, and smelly carpet. unfortunately i found out first hand, it's all true. The Beijing hotel is strategically located inside a connecting hotel complex (Beijing Grand Hotel, Beijing Raffles, etc) next door to the forbiden city and a mall (there's a very nice grand hyatt above of the mall) in the gate of wangfujiang pedestrian shopping street (which's highly overrated and full of yelling, grossly spitting and pushy locals trying to sell you something- ultimate tourist trap). Anyway back to the hotel, the lobby is actually quite grand, but like most of the things i found in China, the good side stays in the facade, our room hall is indeed very smelly, the rooms feels very old, the bed is indeed flat hard and the bathroom, moldy. The staffs don't really speak English, from 5 front desk person only 1 could speak and understand English -moderately, the rest, they just acted really annoyed if we talked in English (there's a 5 star diamond plaque in front, very ironic). Again, if i may suggest to anyone who's considering staying here: don't. The Raffles is just next door and the front desk people there are very nice and speak fluent English, a very rare thing indeed in Beijing, how i found out? i moved out and changed to raffles hotel (which by the way is connected literally in one building, but feels like heaven and earth/hell in some point.)

Great hotel! Very helpful and right on the subway and bus lines. Close to Tienanmen Square and Forbidden City. Public transportation easy to use from this site. Staff always kind and polite. Very helpful finding correct bus lines to take for the day.

Nice comfortable rooms in a great location. Staff very friendly and helpful. Bike rentals on site, fun markets and shopping around the corner, only one block walk to the Forbidden city. You have to have a swim cap to swim in the pool.

Service Culture in China still has a long way to go.

Good spacious hotel, with adequate amenities, certainly value for money. Access to Beijing via the nearby metro is excellent. Hotel staff seem reluctant to engage with guests, no evidence of service levels you would expect in a Western Chain.
Taxi's are a nightmare and hotel staff are reluctant to help secure taxis.

By far the worst 5* hotel I've ever stayed in

The Beijing Hotel is by far the worst 5* hotel I've ever stayed in.

Service is non-existent and one can only imagine how much training, time and effort it would take before the service level comes even close to a 5* standard.

We visited the pool and were not allowed to use it, because we did not have a cap. Mandatory in China, we know now, but not something I pack by default for a trip. We could RENT a cap for 60Y. No thanks.

Internet is not included in the room rate and comes in at 20Y a hour with a max of 80 per calendar day.

The only good thing about this hotel, is its location. Metro station on the doorstep, shopping around the corner and attractions nearby. Also, the cycle rental station in the parking is convenient.

Not sure how much was paid to get the rating, but I would say 3* for the room and 2* for the service is more realistic.

Great location, average hotel

The hotel is very convenient (walking distance)to Tianamen Square, the Forbidden City and shopping. The hotel itself is old but relatively well kept.They were doing noisy, messy repairs to the plumbing and yet still rented out the rooms nearest to the noise. I woke up to these repairs on Sunday morning![...]

Old, bare, smelly, dirty, will NEVER go back

All elevators stink, probably from the carpets in the elevators; the room was bare, old, and look like a cheapest motel, quite embarrassing as I invited some relatives over. The bathroom was also very old and unpleasant. The stain on the toilet cover can't even be removed after I tried to scrub it. What an experience. Please stay away, there are many other hotels to choose from. This one does not live up to its name, star rating and location...

Needs a face lift

The rooms are old and need to be upgraded badly. Also, the AC did not work upon check-in and had to be worked on for an hour. In general the hotel is in bad need of renovation

Tea and coffee service inside the room not satisfactory, you have to call everyday to bring free tea,milk, coffee and suger.
Carpet in the gallary was smelly

This 4+ Star hotel right in the center of everything compared favorably to a nearby 'Hyatt Grand' hotel at around 1/3rd the cost. Nothing to fault and really large rooms. Would have liked it better if Beijing handled their smog issue, but just get used to it and wear a mask on the street.

Amazingly Convenient!!

The Beijing Hotel is wonderful. The room was clean and convenient. There was inexpensive internet service in the room and easy transport to the airport. I was able to visit all the bookstores in the area on foot or by subway. The price was great for a five star hotel in central Beijing. Amazingly convenient!!

Loved revisiting Beijing Hotel.

Fabulous location, easy walk to Forbidden City. Our morning Starbucks available at the mall across the street. Fabulous Beijing duck dinner just down the street. Enjoyed the pool, didn't eat at the hotel ..beyond our budget. The hotel was totally renovated 2002, so the old ambiance of 1989 was gone. We'd stay there again.

Not really a five star hotel,

Not really a five star hotel, but it is a good accommodation in this huge and interesting city. The room we have been checked in was in the far corner of the hotel and not with the view or interior which would be expected in the five star hotels. I got impression that not that attractive rooms are allocated for people who book over internet. But above everything the location was perfect. I would stay in this hotel again.

Unbeatable location for the price

Beijing Hotel is the oldest and most famous hotel in Beijng. The location was great-short walk to Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. The subway stop was in front of the hotel and very easy to get around the city. The famous Wangfujing Shopping street was parallel to the hotel. The hotel staff spoke English. The hotel was clean and the lobby looked new. The drawback was that the rooms were tired and the carpet needed to be changed. Breakfast was very expensive, but the food was good. If you wanted to book a tour or show the hotel was expensive and I had found a tour company in Beijing that had great prices. The price of the hotel, if booked through the hotel, is over priced for what you get, but you are paying for location.I received a great deal through Orbitz.

距离王府井大街，天安门广场都在步行圈，非常方便。无论是前台还是餐厅，做清扫房间的所有staff都非常彬彬有礼而且非常热情热心。
再有，在前台的Travel desk 也非常方便，staff非常热情。

北京飯店是天安門附近的老牌飯店，但是已經有點殘舊，而且客戶樓層會有辨公室，這些也會令人覺得有點奇怪和不舒服，厠所亦不太乾淨和有異味。總體來說，可以找到兩個好處。第一就是跑步很方便但需要帶身份證，因為會有安檢。第二就是健身室也是不錯的。另外，前台服務的態度及專業水平有待改善，例如禮貌和積極跟進客戶的要求等等。

チェックインの列が4列で合計12名ほど待っていました。列によってチェックインの速さがちがう。待つ列を1列にして、終わったカウンターに振り分けると良い。
最上階が「観展なんとか」と表示してありましたので、行ってみましたか。エレベーターホールでしかいられませんでした。結局窓越しに南側しか見られませんでした。期待して2泊もしたのにがっかりです。これなら気の利いた３星のホテルでも十分ですね。結局コストパフォーマンスは低いということです。

The worst hotel what I have ever stayed in

It was the worst.
I made a reservation for check-out on September 16th, and the hotel staff confirmed my check-out on the 16th when I checked in.

But on September 15th the hotel staff told me to leave the room. He told me my check-out date is 15th.

It was so absurd. I showed my reservation at hotels.com and showed my receipt, but told me to call the hotels.com about the problem.

This problem was a problem with hotels.com and Beijing hotel, but it did not work at all. Eventually I called the manager and for over an hour I could not get into my room.

This is the first time such an absurd case. I thought the hotel staff seemed to mistake the check-out date when I checked in. And he handed over the staff's fault to me. This makes sense?

The location is only good, the building is old and it is not possible to use the master card and visa card in the hotel (only union pay is available).

The interior of the room was too old and smelled too much.

It may have been historically meaningful, but it was the worst hotel I have ever stayed in.

And it would be good for this hotel to dismiss the hotel staff as soon as possible.

No es ni la sombra de lo que fue

La habitación era vieja, con los muebles que se caían de viejos. La moqueta sucia, el baño antiguo y el trato frío. El desayuno era como de un hotel de tres estrellas. La situación inmejorable.

繁華街に近いが。。。

10年ぶりの北京飯店。
以前は綺麗なイメージでしたが、ところどころ老朽化が目立っており5つ星ホテルとしては
かなり残念。
繁華街の王府井や天安門広場も近く立地は抜群です。
