Very dated bedroom, two armchairs in bedroom were very old and in poor condition. The bathroom smelled very damp and foisty, there was lots of mould in the shower cubicle on the ceiling and around the tiles.
The bed was comfy and the room was warm and quiet.

I stayed at the Macdonald Tickled Trout Hotel and unfortunately found the room in a poor state—thick dust under the bed, cobwebs, exposed wiring in the corner, and a mouse that ran across the floor and vanished beneath peeling carpet.

That said, the woman on reception was fantastic—she was completely understanding, didn’t question my concerns, and immediately issued a full refund, along with free breakfast and parking. No fuss, no pushback—she handled it professionally and with empathy.

The hotel clearly has major maintenance and cleanliness issues to fix, but I can’t fault the staff on duty for how they handled it.

Hotel is very tired! Rooms were ok (website photos are very definitely photo shopped!) Rooms were really hot despite the weather not being that hot, there was a fan in the room but that did little to cool the room down. Couldn't open windowsxas bugs/flies were flying around outside. Food was really good including breakfast but the breakfast staff were more interested in hiding round the corner chatting. Coukd be a fantastic venue but definitely needs updating.

Stayed here about 5 years ago and as I had business nearby seemed the right choice.. however, the rooms are neglected. Dust everywhere, skirting, TV, curtains and pelmet.. obviously not seen a Hoover in many months.. bathroom is quite small and who decided to put the loo so damned close to the wall?? You need to be a contortionist to wipe! Hairs in the sink and some sort of substance around the plug hole?
Window over rider not secured to the window and quite a bit of road noise from M6.
Food and drink is actually decent quality (except the chips as more like soggy raosties) but very high cost. Reduction on the portion size perhaps to bring costs back inline?
First negative review I have had to leave in a long time. Would only come back if it was brought back to standard of previous years. Such a shame as it’s a lovely location next to the river with convenient links to the motorway and for Lake District.

Worst hotel night ive ever had. And this hotel was great when stayed previously. Carpet soaking in part of room. Smell of damp. So disapponting , as had great stay previously. I should have known, it was so cheap, but the place is very run down and tired. And it is a motorway service hotel, it seemed to do well for British Gas engineers staying there. But I won’t be back. The windows don’t fully seal so there was a slight bit of motorway noise. Bathroom while clean is a bit worn and rusty. Hot water was intermittent. Furniture probably not updated since the 90s

Room completely poor. Door open on arrival and hard to shut. Keyfob didn't work lighting. One pillow only on double bed. No towels provided. Room was cold as radiator turned off. Carpet had not been hoovered and thick dust on furniture. Housekeeping appeared non existant as during our stay our cups were not even washed. There was no card in the room telling us how to call reception and so we had to keep going downstairs to report issues. Upon checkout we were not asked about our stay and were not told we needed a code to lift the exit car park barrier. A passerby helped us leave.

It's like a property in the past. Basics were OK. If you need to charge anything forget it nevermind having to refresh the wifi every time you mobe 10 yards. The other thing is that the evening staff were very distracted never mind the devils sugar that the family at the othe side of the bar were on whilst trying to have a glass of wine while trying to relax in the late evening.

Dreadful, I won’t be staying there again. The welcome was terrible (made to wait whilst paperwork, not related to my stay, was completed, and then a very surly “Surname” and the key handed over without any grace at all), the bedside table was broken and clearly in danger of collapsing, no sockets anywhere near the bed (I have a sleep apnea machine, I had to sleep on the other side of the bed to enable it to reach at a real stretch) and then, despite making it very clear I was dairy intolerant (which they’d acknowledged) I was served dinner with a creamy sauce. When I queried that, and they confirmed it was full of dairy, they changed my plate and supplied a fresh potato pancake but did not offer fresh veg and did not apologise.

Beautiful hotel great views over looking a river we had glorious weather that made the view even better Swans swimming nearby modern rooms really comfortable bed top end bedding lovely bathrooms hot showers .full feather filled pillows needs were met right away when I requested more pillows. For my disability. Staff lovely and welcoming ,restaurant and modern Bar lovely lounge areas throughout the hotel . Feels poor to have a parking charge added on arrival after paying up front on Hotel’s dot Com app. An added expense and I still think the app is just not clear enough. Not a great Customer experience and obviously you then view the hotel with different eyes. It’s tired as a facility but room was spacious but they were not ready for a 7am breakfast today so it was all a bit of a rush. Not a wonderful breakfast buffet but adequate. In total need of decorating. Good location by the Motorway.

The personnel were absolutely lovely and helpful. Anne was wonderful and she had organised our meal after the kitchen had closed for a function. Everyone was so cheerful including the morning breakfast staff who were absolutely run off their feet as the hotel was quite full.
We loved the whole Fawlty Towers set up :)

I stopped for two nights, the first being booked as a member of the Macdonald hotels website. I then needed to extend my stay by a further night. I had booked a non refundable tariff so could not cancel and re book a 2 night stay, so opted to book an additional night.
To my surprise I found that booking via Expedia was around £14 less expensive that booking direct.
When I checked in, the staff at first said they would reduce my first night's tariff to match the Expedia rate, then changed their mind. I spoke to the manager who was pretty unsympathetic and did not seem concerned about the issue and was intransigent in her attitude to do absolutely nothing about it at all, and even had the cheek to suggest that I had saved over £20 by booking in advance rather than booking on the day. In the end, our conversation was becoming somewhat terse and so it ended.
Even a good will gesture of a complimentary drink or similar might have diffused the situation but nothing was forthcoming.
I find it bewildering that by being a loyal member of the company website, I was not able to obtain the least expensive rate. How does this promote brand loyalty?
When I checked in, I asked the receptionist if a colleague who was due to arrive after me might be allocated a room close by and was assured that their room was indeed close by. When they arrived, however, they were allocated a ground floor room, while I was on the second floor. Hardly close by.

Hotel is good for the price but spoilt by lack of care- curtain where hanging off and light outside in the hall was off so needed to use torch on my phone to find the key whole. Booked a family room as travelling with my husband and 2 young kids. Arrived to check in to be told there were no family rooms available because others had booked and already checked in, so instead we were given 2 separate rooms which wasn’t ideal given we had 2 small kids. After receiving the keys, we went to find the lift given we had a pushchair with our youngest, only to find to get to the lift you need to go downstairs… made zero logical sense and not very accessible at all.

I had no light in my bedroom, no. 232, only in the bathroom and entrance area - both bedroom lamps did not work - this meant that I could not use my laptop as the room needs to be well let for me to do screen work. I moved the bed a little to the side to find another socket and when I did so, I discovered under the bed to be dirty, with paper waste on the carpet. The receptionist was efficient but not particularly friendly - no smiles - and didn't warn me that both the key and the fob had to be inserted a particular way, so I had to come back down to reception with a heavy laptop to explain the situation.
Not as good as previous stays at the property when bar staff were exceptionally helpful. Also disappointed about the introduction of car parking fees. Happy I got a good room price though, but given my criticisms, I wouldn't want to have paid any more than I did on this occasion.

The room was very hot due to a massive radiator with an inoperative thermostat on the radiator. It was hot all night. The cold water to the shower was not working so the water to the bath taps and shower was scalding. The toilet did not flush.
The hotel is shabby but I did know that before booking. The above issues were not acceptable however. I spoke to the manager and they said they would call me but no call so far.

A Basic hotel with lots of space in the room. The hotel and attached restaurant is a dog friendly place which was helpful., I wish Hotels.com would say that the extra fee the dog would be 15 quid. It would be nice to know this upfront. It would be nice to know up front that the parking fee would be 5 quid in addition. By the time we checked in it was too late (dark outside) to consider anything else. The attached restaurant offered a pretty hefty price for what was a very basic - almost sub-par burger.

The hotel is in desperate need of an update; it is not a four star hotel! The common areas/ lift smelt very badly of damp, the walls were scuffed and marked, the hotel room had exposed raw plugs and unfinised work around smoke alarms. The window looked out onto the heating/ air conditioning units and had a multitude of cigarette butts on the roof directly outside of the window. Most inconvenient of all was the bathroom which had a very ineffectual shower and luke warm hot water so that we had to shower at a friends house! We did not dare to eat in the restaurant and so cannot comment on the quality of the food. Its such a shame as this hotel is in a prime location, but is definitely well past its best. We actually checked out a day early.

I believe this room was an upgrade from my previous stay. Slightly more spacious with a bigger more recently refurbished bathroom. But no power to the comfortable reclining chair and a dodgy tv controller. Breakfast was partial self service but the cooked food direct from the kitchen wasn’t hot and freshly prepared.
Whole stay was excellent value though. Great location close to the M6 service station and EV charging very close.

Probably a good hotel in the 90s.

Quite a dismal experience. All started with having to phone someone to request attendance at reception so that i could check in. A member of staff was walking past seeing I was waiting and didn’t mention a word. Then when someone else arrived after five minutes or so, I was advised that it would cost £5 for parking (not detailed on booking). Get to the room past the corridors that have not seen a lick of paint of had the deteriorating wallpaper replaced and things aren’t much better. Black marks on the walls, mould on the shower grout, dust in the light fittings, a TV from 2005.. it’s endless.

Upon departure the next morning the breakfast was just as dire. Continental selection barely existent and the quality of cooked breakfast definitely isn’t aware winning as per their menu. For the price point they charge, steer clear.

At check in, we weren't given a code to exit the car park. We assumed the barrier was automatic.
On check in, clerk only took payment for 1 night. On check out, we were informed we hadn't paid. So we had to look at the email to see if an amount was due.
The shower in room 204 was faulty. I had a lukewarm shower 2 days running. It also fluctuated to cold during use. I had informed reception on the evening of the first day, but nothing was done. THIS WAS VERY UNSATISFACTORY! Not what we expect for the money paid.
The hotel was clean and otherwise comfortable for our requirements.

The pictures and descriptions on the website do not reflect the rooms. Broken and old furniture that was badly marked. Missing furniture (bedside table even reception believe what we were telling them) and indeed also a missing phone so couldn’t call reception to report issues. No air conditioning although a fan was provided in the room which was incredibly warm. Holes in walls and doors, not sure what was spilled down the walls however the runs were evident. Two bath towels and one hand towel for a couple and only two soft pillows. The view was of the hotel roof. The one star was for breakfast, a good variety but most items luke warm at best.

Lovely comfortable room. Lots of space with riverside view. Staff especially Vicky the Manager. Very helpful & friendly. Will definitely stay again.

Storm cancelled visit to hotel

Due to storm Bert we had to drive all the way from Brighton to Ayr in Scotland in one go. I asked if we could transfer to Sunday night , return journey, but was told the website wouldn’t allow it.

A little far from relaxing

Review of Our Stay

We recently stayed at this hotel during our honeymoon, and unfortunately, it did not meet our expectations. The room we were given smelled strongly of cigarettes, which was very unpleasant. The decor was outdated, with old curtains and furniture that seemed well past their prime. The room itself felt run-down; the ceiling above the shower was peeling, and many areas of the room—including the fan—were visibly dusty and poorly maintained. As someone with allergies, this made the stay even more uncomfortable.

The cleanliness was a significant concern. At times, the room didn’t feel clean enough to even use the bathroom comfortably. The fan was especially disgusting, covered in dust, which contributed to a sickly feeling whenever it was on. Other parts of the room were equally dusty, making it hard to relax.

On top of this, the reception staff were unhelpful. They rarely answered the phone, and when I went downstairs to complain about the smell, no one was available. When I eventually found someone, they offered to spray the room with air freshener, but nothing was done. After further complaints, they offered to move us to a different room, but it wouldn’t have been the same suite we’d initially booked, so we decided to stay put.

Overall, this stay was disappointing. The room was not up to standard, the cleanliness was poor, and the staff’s lack of communication made the experience even worse. For the price and occasion, we expected far better. We would not

Good location easy parking but you have to pay nice and clean hotel would stay again
