This is not a 4 star hotel. I had a nice room and the staff is helpful. Breakfast is mostly sweets, no fruit. The elevator near my room makes loud groaning noises when in use. But the location is poor, some distance from the tourist area down twisted poorly maintained streets. I got lost twice trying to find it again. Taxis charge 20 euros to take you less than a mile to the main tourist area. Nearby restaurants are for locals with nothing in English. I just can't recommend it because of the location. Otherwise OK.

It is a very old property like Italy. I enjoyed the breakfast and the staff was friendly. They can do a better job updating their linens. The bedding and pillows were needing replacement. I did not like the immediate neighborhood.

LOUD LATE in the NIGHT

The hotel is near a place where late night outdoor parties are held late in the night. It booming music that is non-stop interspersed with cars with boomboxes trying to compete who is loudest.

I sleep thru most noises but this was insane. Windows and shutters shut tight, the complimentary earplugs and the hum of the air conditioner are no use.

The hotel is perfectly located next to the historic old town, but misses the cheesy tourist strip. The neighborhood and surrounding streets have a lot of bars and restaurants that serve locals (no english on menus) and is very lively on weekends. The receptionist and staff at hotel are polite and friendly and give good suggestions on places to visit. The wifi was quick and room spacious and clean

We strongly believe that Expedia should no longer be listing this hotel. It is located in a very unpleasant and dirty area, is very shabby and poorly cared for. The room we were given was one of the \"01\" numbered rooms, that are right next to a very noisy old lift. They said they couldn't move us as they were totally full, but later in the evening we started hearing dripping water inside the room from the ceiling (not sure if this was from the air conditioning or from a bathroom on the floor above) and they eventually but reluctantly agreed that the room was unfit and that they would move us to a sister hotel (The Garibaldi) the following morning. The Garibaldi was fine, but the Vecchio Borgo is not of the quality one expects to find listed on Expedia

This is most likely motel not a 4*hotel, do not be foolish. Everything is dirty, rooms are dated, beds are awful and bedding is old and terrible in terms of comfort. Bathroom is old and dirty with 24”x24” (!!!!!!) shower stall. Do not recommend!!!!!!

Front desk staff was very nice and welcoming.

Breakfast was included in our room price and a very good continental spread. Coffee was delicious.

Room was very disappointing. Double bed was two twins pushed together (very normal for Europe) but one of the twin mattresses was comfortable and the other was like sleeping on a hard board with springs in your back. The room was cold and the heating didn't work well, and there wasn't a lot of bedding. (We did receive extra blankets when requested. Pillows too, because they were all so flat and felt like stone).

Room was incredibly small for a triple even by European standards. Bathroom was nice with nice toiletries provided.

We travel a lot in Europe as a family and were disappointed by this room. As stated, staff was wonderful, breakfast was good, but the room itself was a big let down.

The streets outside were so loud that even with the windows and shutters closed you had to wear earplugs just to sleep. There is a bar next door where people were singing in the streets plugged into a speaker system.

The bed was also rock hard, the lift was slow and on the verge of breaking, and the hotel was pretty basic all around.

The positive is that the bathroom was ok and it's fairly close to the centre, but still a 5 or 10 minute walk

Conveniently located near the port. It is a bit far from the old town but walkable. Clean and comfortable room. My only complain is that the shower area is a bit small given that the whole bathroom is quite big. A good spread for breakfast.

The staff was friendly and helpful, although the lady working on my last night started arguing with me about paying council tax agin when I had already paid them. I politely responded that I had paid all fees upon my check in (as the receptionist asked me to do) so it wasn’t nice to be questioned aggressively when I already had told the lady I’ve paid. She insisted she would have to double check but couldn’t be bothered to call me back to let me know that I was right.

It’s a beautiful hotel in general but in the most dodgy area. I felt unsafe in the evenings and stared at walking past big groups of people hanging about in the square outside. If you want peace and quiet, this is not the hotel for you. I couldn’t sleep at night, nor could I nap during the day. Not only are the walls so thin you can hear you neighbors breathe (literally), there are children outside playing football until late and shouting and screaming men all night. You’ll hear music playing in passing cars and there may even be a club somewhere nearby.

Breakfast was ok, a Sicilian section with cakes and a European / American section too. I was looking forward to Italian coffee but it was watered down and diluted to serve more people.

Don’t mean to sound too negative, but just disappointed with the expectations I had.

They booked me a cab upon my checkout, which was nice and smooth to leave early in the morning as I had a train to catch.

Good price and fairly good location, but slightly lacking in comfort. Air conditioning was very weak and slow; one day it wasn't working at all, and upon enquiry at reception I found they'd switched the air con off completely in our room. Shower was also miniscule despite a large bathroom. Wifi was also very poor - no better than using mobile data. Nonetheless, staff were welcoming and helpful.

Kind front desk employees but too loud

The front desk was very helpful and kind, it's evident that they want you to have a great stay. However, the all-hours-of-the-day noise in front of the hotel is pretty hard to ignore, and the shower had mold. I wore earplugs to bed and still heard the loud music out front. It was a strange neighborhood to be in as a tourist...it's a deserted area of town so don't plan on a lot of food or shop options. Also, it's a good 15 min walk to the historical center (through a bit of a seedy neighborhood to get there), so it really wasn't a convenient location for our short visit.

Good stay, location looks a bit \"scruffy\" on first arrival but after staying at another hotel in Palermo on the way back (Hotel Columbia - DO NOT GO!!!) & seeing that in general Palermo is not a clean city I realise we got lucky here.
Breakfast is a bit blah, but that's the continent for you - no hot morning meals.
I would stay here again as the staff were nice & the rooms good & the hotel clean.
It is loud on a Friday night - but it's the city centre, what do you expect!

Hotel short stay

Really pleased with our stay in the hotel although the hard bed gave the wife backache. We were staying in the location as we had a family wedding on the Saturday. The local atmosphere, shops & bars were great fun and we enjoyed just being there.
Sunday gave us chance to take a trip to Erice where we took the cable car ride to experience the magnificent views, had a lovely meal in one the local resturants and got lost in the maze of alleyways. Overall really enjoyed our stay in Sicily.

Great base for exploring Palermo

Vecchio Borgo was a fantastic base for visiting Palermo- close to transport links and the Via Roma, opposite a little gelato shop and staff that were among the most friendly and helpful people we encountered in Palermo. Special mention to Alessandro the concierge- he was nearly always at the desk during our stay, and provided much appreciated advice, assistance and patience.
The shower in our room was a little tricky (too narrow a cubicle and too little water pressure for enjoyable showering, though perhaps this is standard on the 6th floor?), but was cleaned on a daily basis by quick and cheerful staff.

Not in prime position, ok if you know your way around. But surrounding neighbouhoods are not for the regular tourist. The service was excellent, and the rooms were pretty and large. Shower facilities were very good and an effective climate control system in the room. Good range of free channels on tv, was perfect hotel to use as just a place to sleep as I explored the city for a week. Gaia was a very helpful receptionist who advised me best on the city and provided maps!

Good location for ferry passengers

Very comfortable hotel with an excellent breakfast. Comfortable beds. Convenient location. We arrived by ferry and walked to the hotel from the port. It is also close to the starting point for the Hop-On Hop-Off tour bus and nice restaurants. Within a reasonable walk to the Vuccheria market in the old part of town. I would recommend this hotel.

Good central convenient location

Clean hotel, good value, central location and friendly helpful staff. Local area superficially gruppy with litter lying around but worth exploring the local markets and piazzas, especially at night when the locals take to the streets for beers, coffees and socialising. Good fun.

This is an older but charming hotel in one of the least glamorous areas of Palermo. Wonderful restaurants nearby, but Palermo is not a very clean city. Really a blot on the reputation of the very island of Sicily which we loved so much. We would not return to Palermo once we left the airport.

Great hotel with excellent price and central location in Palermo

We have been 7 nights at Hotel Vecchio Borgo on August 2011 and we had a excellent experience. The hotel is near of everything that you must see in Palermo and the breakfast is good enough with a selection of continental and English breakfast. The staff is very helpful except for one of he members of the reception that looks always upset. The room was well maintained and quiet. The surrounding neighborhood is not really pleasant but it is safe and central located in Palermo.

I will recommend this hotel for anyone looking a good hotel in central location with excellent value for money in Palermo

Best of a dozen hotels we stayed in over a month in Sicily

1. Neighborhood.
This is really in the old part of town, with an open market just down the street, and narrow streets with laundry hanging over the balcony on your path up to the tourist area. Within a few blocks are wine bars with an after-work clientel, and fancy restaurants. We were delighted, but it might not please those expecting a sanitary, sterile and silent convention center.
I think the test is---if you like Lower Manhattan, this neighborhood is for you.

2. Hotel.
This is a very, very good rehab job on a small, oddly shaped hotel. While you can probably get the same decent rooms, North American sized breakfast, etc. what really stands out is the quality of the front desk.
My wife and I stayed 5 split between the beginning and end of April. One reason we came back was the excellent quality of the front desk staff. They were helpful beyond expectations, as well as knowledgable. For example,, I had a problem signing on to my E-mail, and when it became clear that it was not a Hotel wi-fi problem, but a difficulty with my E-mail provider, desk staff helped with that as well. The solution required receiving a text message (with a new password) from the U.S., as well as translating messages from the provider from Italian to English. Staff pulled it off (while attending promptly to phone calls and other guests) without missing a step.

3. Grand place if you like walking. If driving, well . . .

The staff was very helpful for tourist information. The neighborhood was not ready for tourists. The restaurant owners would raise the prices for tourists. The walk to the mass transit was 3-4 blocks. The bus strike occurred on the afternoon of the day we were leaving. It appears that they stop on the major tourist routes first, i.e. Piazza Independencia and Politamana. The other routes go longer, but check with locals. We had some American students tell us that they had gone on strike. One never knows until it is occurring. The next day may be fine.

They do not speak english very well. The rooms are extremely small and the showers are so small, plan on leaving a body part oustide the shower stall before going in.

Hotel Veccio Borgo in Palermo - Good Value

The hotel has nice big rooms with a large bathroom. The large bath has too small a shower however. The rooms have individual heat/air control and shutters on the window that block the light in the morning.

The big disadvantage is the location next to a plaza that the young people of the neighborhood use to party at night. Lots of noise and cars blowing horns and playing loud music. It is also kind of far from the Cathederal and other old city sites. It is close to Theatre Politeama and all the transportation that picks up there such as the airport bus however.

I had some internet problems but other guests did not so maybe it was my laptop acting up.

Overall I found it a good value for the rate I paid and the location was fine for me since I love to hike anyway. Others may find it noisy and inconvenient. .

Hotel is centrally located although in a residential area. Staff is friendly and speaks English. Rooms are very clean, a/c works very well (a must in the summer months),and the showers are awesome. Authentic European hotel in an authentic part of town. Walk a few blocks to the \"vucciria,\" the open air food market, for a true Sicilian experience. Also closeby is Via Principe Belmonte (sic), a pedestrian-only street with outdoor cafes and food shops. Perfect place to people-watch.

I found the hotel to be very good. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful at all times. I would recommend the breakfast to all prospective travellers. It was very good. Moreover the location is very good in that it is a manageable walking disttance to all of the major attractions in Palermo. Perhaps my only negative comments is that the rooms are a little bit on the small side.

Although I disagree with Expedia's 4 star rating, we were happy with the overall quality of the hotel. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Good breakfast, nice furnishings, pleasantly decorated. Palermo, in general, like most larger cities, was dirty and crowded. However, the location of the hotel was convenient and most sights were within walking distance. The neighborhood around the hotel was noisy in the evenings with locals hanging out, but that added to the atmosphere. Seemed like a safe area. We would return.

Hotels.com's description of the hotel does not correspond at all to the actual conditions.How the hotel can be described as 4 stars is a mystery. If I had known the quality in advance, I would definitely have chosen another hotel.
In general, the room was very, very tired. Broken teething mugs (of which there was only 1), blankets with holes in them, hard cushions (of which there were only 3) and worn furniture.
Furthermore Hotel guests do NOT have access to any roof terrace. There is NO bar or snack bar. That there is a fridge in the reception where you can buy water and sometimes a glass of wine is not a bar/snack bar.
The pictures from the breakfast buffet show that there are many different kinds of fresh fruit. That is not the case. There were four half-rotten apples.
The only positive was the helpful and friendly staff everywhere, from the receptionists, the cleaning staff and the lady at the breakfast buffet.

Hotellet var rent och trevligt med en mycket vänlig och hjälpsam personal. Frukosten var något begränsad. Saknade bla grönsaker. Duscharna var ämnade för små italienare och inte fullvuxna män eller kvinnor. Överlag en bra vistelse!

Mitt rum låg mot gatan och det var väldigt högljutt. Hotellet hade lagt fram öronproppar som man kunde använda.
Hotellet ligget bra till för att ta promenader till de centrala delarna av Palermo.

Absolut inte fyrstjärnig standard. Fruktansvärt oljud från torget nedanför. Öronbedövande musik hela natten och fyrverkerier. Hördes upp till 8:e våningen där vi bodde.

Un albergo decadente situato in una posizione poco sicura di Palermo. La sera la musica a tutto volume per le strade fino alle 3 di notte.
Il parcheggio a pagamento dell'hotel è un cortile allinterno dei vicoli, poco raccomandabili e difficile da raggiungere con una macchina grande.

Ystävällinen henkilökunta. Patjoina vain kovat runkopatjat ilman petauspatjaa. Äänet sekä kadulta, että muista huoneista, kuuluivat voimakkaina. Suihkukoppi niin pieni, että piti avata ovi, jotta mahtui kääntymään.

Hotel prima, freundliches und hilfsbereites Personal, gutes Frühstück mit frischen Produkten. Wer es nachts gerne ruhiger hat, sollte nur Zimmer auf der Hotelrückseite buchen. Auf dem Platz seitlich des Hotels ist von Donnerstag bis Sonntag von 22 - 03 Uhr Party. Auch bei geschlossenem Fenster ist an Schlaf nicht zu denken.

L’albergo in posizione centrale, ottimo rapporto qualità prezzo. Per me un po’ troppo profumato ( da far venire mal di testa ) e la doccia è adatta soltanto alle persone molto magre !

Localizzato in una zona centrale, piuttosto popolare, ma molto comoda. Hotel non nuovo ma in buone condizioni, pulito e ben accessoriato con persinale gentilissimo, soprattutto alla reception. Buona colazione a buffet.

Hvis du sammenligner det med 4-stjernet hoteller andre steder i Europa vil du blive skuffet - det er nok mere et 2 eller 3 stjernet, men hvis du bare mangler et godt sted at sove i en god lokation i byen er det fint.

Detta hotell är verkligen inget 4-stjärnigt hotell.
Badrummet behöver verkligen uppdateras. Är du bredare än 35 cm kommer du inte in i duschen. Matsalen känns daterad. Frukosten ingen höjdare. Detta är möjligtvis ett 3-Stjärngt hotell.
Betala lite mer och du hittar ett bättre hotell.

Ottima posizione per fare turismo, personale gentile e accogliente. Canerecpiccoke ma con tutte le necessità, biancheria pulita, forse qualcosa su cui fare manutenzione. Ottimo rapporto qualità prezzo. Io vero neo sono i locali sottostanti che, soprattutto il sabato sera, fanno musica fino a tardi.
