Unique experience

If you want to experience staying in a traditional japanese house, this is relatively affordable choice. Even though they have only 1 shower, they make effort in cleaning up the shower area after a guest has used it, so that it is clean and nice for the next guest.

The staff is excellent, they are extremely helpful and very nice and gave good tips about the event around, I just don't think it's worth 200$CA, when there's only 1 bathroom for 5-6 rooms, and Turkish style toilet. If the price goes down, its definitely a very Japanese experience, right now it's an overpriced experience. We got a 300$CA Ryokan earlier, and was way better and with private onsens available.

Overall good experience.

It was really cute and the owners were very nice! A lot of people complained about noise and bathroom conditions. This is a Ryokan, not a Hilton Resort. The building is historically old and if you are staying here, you stay for the experience. I would recommend one or two nights max.

Our room was air conditioned and it was great. The second we left our bedroom, it was hot and humid (summer). The air conditioner really worked hard.

My only recommendation is that the place could use some touch ups and Reno’s in certain areas. Loose floor board, missing wall trim in room, etc.

Let me preface this review by saying if you are an adult or couple travelling and want to truly experience Japanese traditional hotel life, this is the place for you.

However, traveling as a family is already a challenge without hotels misrepresenting their facilities. We booked this hotel despite it being 45 minutes from our travel destination due to the room description of having a separate living room and soaking tub IN THE ROOM (see picture). When we arrived, we were shown our room which was a traditional tatami room just big enough for 3 twin size futons. Then we were directed to the public toilets and shower.

We are sure that staying in this home would have been a unique Japanese experience, but we were looking for the comfort of space that was advertised.

We decided to suck it up and just go to sleep. Unfortunately, the lights from the surrounding city lit our room up brighter than actual daylight the entire night. We could literally hear people walking outside. Meanwhile, our toddler tossed and turned all night less than a foot away from us.

We left around 6am and attempted to get a refund for our second night as we could not reasonably justify spending over $100 for an incredibly uncomfortable stay when an entire house WITH separate living spaces is a click away on AirBnB. We were refused the refund.

Please take heed of this and other reviews to ensure this hotel is what you are looking for in your stay. The pictures and descriptions are misleading.

It was a 120 year old traditional Japanese house. I didnt know this when I booked. But glad I stayed there for the experience. Only downside was that I left my watch that my wife bought me in the shared bathroom and someone decided that they needed it more than me. Not the hosts fault but.

Big on originality but very short on comfort.

Although this is a very beautiful original Ryokan is did not provide any comfort. Our room was just big enough for the 2 futons and did not provide even a chair. One shared bathroom only, and no breakfast. This Ryokan, accepting its originality, was over priced.

Charming old inn but no modern bathroom comfort

Charming old inn but totally lack of modern bathroom comfort. Only 1 washroom & 1 bathroom for the whole building and 2 out of the 3 toilets are of the historic sqaddung type! No big luggage allowed in room in order to protect wooden floor but all other old ryokans I stayed before have no such rule....

Traditional house with super strict rule

A good traditional house with very strict and rigid rules like no shower after certain times. Even with just 15mins late, they won't even allow you to shower. Toilet is super smelly,they need to work that out. I wouldn't go to their toilet but to wait until I go out and use the toilet in the restaurant nearby or train station. A little dusk in my room too. When they said no shower after certain time, I thought if someone else is using the face wash area,I could just use the sink at the shower room for face wash but no, the owner pointed at the sign at the door saying no shower but I wasn't showing at all, I wasn't even entering the hot tub area but the sink area for face wash since a family of three were washing their face, brushing teeth at the appointed area. The owner can really be more open and easy going on little stuff like this

Unclean guesthouse

We honestly can’t give good feedback regarding this guesthouse. There are several aspects of our stay that were problematic:
-The pictures from the website are NOT REPRESENTATIVE of the guesthouse we stayed in.
-The bathrooms were NOT CLEAN, they smelled pretty bad and the floor was kind of sticky. As far as I saw, there was only 1 western toilet. Also, they were for both sex, and there were male toilets on the open right there, so you might find yourself seeing someone peeing.
-The whole house smelled strange: our own room smelled as it had not been ventilated in a while. The room was not unclean, but the windows were quite difficult (if not impossible) to open.
-There was a strict timetable for showering, from 6 to 9 AM and from 3 to 11 PM. If you know that beforehand, it might be acceptable for you, but if there is a lot of people in the house, it can be problematic. Once we finished at 9:11 and the owner complained.
-We found a bug lying in the pillow one day. It is an old house, so it is not that strange.
Since we did not pay a high price, it might be acceptable for some people. *It must also be said that the rooms had A/C. The problem is that all these aspects are not announced when booking, and so you find yourself in an uncomfortable/unexpected situation when you arrive. Personally, I did not like the way we were addressed by the owner, which had us call him (as a sort of joke) “king”. Again, that is my take on that and it might not bother other people.

Old Ryokan owned by older couple

Hosts were lovely, however they quizzed me on my knowledge of a Japanese menu on arrival, and then suggested (humorously) that I should cut my hair and beard off. It was a bit of fun so no harm done.

If you have heavy bags, you may have trouble/not be able to take them far as the wood is very old.

The hotel itself is near the main part of town, walking distance to the station. The tatami was ok, not the most comfortable but not terrible.

It does have its own hot bath (not a real onsen) but it was very pleasant and relaxing none the less. There is one shower/bath to be shared amongst all the guests.

I think people should stay here at least once!

make a booking the room with balcony/patio and Private bathroom and confirm with document, when arrived in Ryodan, the Owner say never have private bathroom, later talk to Hotel.com (Japan Agent), he only ask us out of Ryodan and didn't give us solution. this is 7 pm at night & 0 air temperature outside? This is VERY bad service.

A quaint Japanese experience

I really liked the house. It’s a great location within 5-10 minutes walk from station. The house is traditional and beautiful. The father and daughter who owned and ran it were really friendly and cute. We traveled there in Dec when the temperature was in single digits. The house was not insulated and heating was lacking so we slept almost in the cold. It would have been a more wonderful experience if it were summer. Also bathroom and shower were shared. Overall, it was great.

Clean and inexpensive hotel close to the station

The hotel was clean, but it was really old. It's actually an old house. There is no sound-proofing at all. You can hear pretty much everything that going on.

The room was clean and non-smoking. However, the owner do smoke inside the building.

The facilities are traditional Japanese : Squat toilets and a shared bathroom.

Traditional Japanese stay

The experience was overwhelming due to the fact that its hard to communicate with the host without English. The house is clean but uncomfortably not suited for older people who can't sit without chairs or squat. The toilet and bathroom are common to all tenants thus it lacks a bit of privacy. No windows to open for a bit of fresh air and lacks the amenities for sophisticated travellers needs in comparison to today's hotel accomodations. Thanks for the experience anyway.

To start its not a Ryokan. Its a guest house Japanese style.
Location is convenient only if you dont want to carry your bags all the way to Hakone or you arrived late at night and transportation is finished. Its a good starting point to do the loop around the mountains. Its a 5 minute walk from Odawara train station, but its around the corner from the red district, so its not that pleasant to go for a walk at night.
The hostesses were really nice and greeted us on arrival. They let us check out an hour late for free.
Guest house and room were really basic and really small. Smells like cigarrete in all common areas.
Like another Hotels.com user mentioned before, there aren't any gardens or balconies in the rooms so I suggest hotels.com to try to amend this.
We only paid us$70 for the night so it was according to what we got.
If you looking for something cheap to stay it will be ok.

Nice ryokan close to Shinkansen station

Comfortable classic room with small garden within the room. Decorated with fresh lily flowers is pleasantly surprised. It is in very good location close to Shinkansen station and convenient to walk around the town.

Stay here to experience the Japanese style house

The owner were so so so friendly & nice.
She let us checked in even it wasn't the time to check in and also serve us with some welcome japanese food and tea. Although she do not know english well but still serve us so friendly.
He know some english, explain clearly to us how to go the nearest onsen. We even chit chat in our room.

Traditional Ryokan at a budget

Hinode Ryokan was our accommodation for my partner and I for our 2 night stay over in Hakone. Located in Odawara which is the \"starting\" access point to Hakone, this place was perfect for people who are looking for a traditional ryokan feel at a budget.

The hosts were really friendly and accommodating and made us feel very welcomed. Coming from a city, entering this place was an experience by itself as there were no locks/keys/pin number.

There is no lack of food staying around here. Just a few mins away, you can find various izakaya restaurants to satisfy your appetite.

This place has all the basic amenities that a traveler will require. My only gripe about this place is that there is only 1 bathroom for the whole place.

Other than that, definitely a recommended place to stay over for a visit in Hakone.

Overpriced, uncomfortable, no privacy, poor servic

We left after one very uncomfortable night. Here's why:
- Shared toilets & only 1 Western toilet, had to walk through urinal area to get to it. Strong urinal smell in whole area.
- Shared bathroom, had to book time in advance to have a private bath.
- Run by older Japanese couple who speak very little English. They didn't show us around when we arrived & laughed at me when I eventually asked where the toilets were.
- The owner invents nicknames for foreign guests (Obama, Clinton, Lincoln for USA). He kept calling my partner Mr Koala, as we're Australian, despite requests to use his correct name. He didn't talk to me or acknowledge me at all. Felt disrespected, racist & sexist.
- Walls very thin & could hear everything in entire floor. No privacy, especially as the owner came into our room several times without knocking, even when we had the door closed. - - No locks on any room doors.
- Kept awake until 1.30am by people drinking & talking in adjacent room. Stopped when we asked them to - owner did nothing.
- Thin walls meant very cold, heater in room ineffective. No heating in corridors or toilets.
- Wifi didn't work in the rooms.
- We paid for a garden room but couldn't see the garden as no windows, just opaque sliding panels for walls & too cold to open them.
- Beds & pillows were very hard - expect this at budget Ryokans but not at price charged.

Close to dining and transportation

Hotel was nice, staff was friendly. The hotel is really close to dining, shopping and transportation. It's walking distance to castle and the beach. Gets cold in the room during cold weather season but there's a heater. Really thin walls and slides but I think most people respect that so they are quiet. Shared bathroom and shower.

Superb ryokan and living it the traditional way of Olden days of a Japanese is the way to experience Japan...well preserved and super enjoyable stay...close to Odawara Station and restaurants...walking distance to Odawara Castle too!!!..owners of this ryokan is super friendly and helpful!!!..Loved them like a family members now...Taisho and his wife Umi!!!!

Great little Ryokan in a not a thrilling city

A really rustic and traditional ryokan. Really enjoyed the atmosphere. Tatami and futons as well as a japanese bath. However, modern in all the right ways including western toilet, wifi, hair dryers etc. Was very quiet and not very occupied. However, Odawara is terribly dull and functions basically as a stopover to Hakone. Not sure if worth visiting again, though i might have missed something?

Great Traditional Ryokan with Good Location!

It is just a walking distance from Odawara Station, which can easily access to Hakone Yumoto. Me and my partner enjoyed every moment of our stay between 12th Nov ~ 13th Nov 2016 in Hinode Ryokan, Odawara.

The owner of the ryokan is really cute and lovely, although they can't really speak English, you will still able to experience the beauty of Japanese gesture. I really miss their smile, it is like a sunshine and tender of the moon.

The room is really clean with a small Japanese garden outside that you would love to stay there for morning sunshine, or even the whole day by just enjoying a cup of tea. There's no bathroom attached, but it never an issue, as we get to experience the typical lifestyle of Japanese people to share their bathroom and toilet.

Nearby, you can easily get what you want to eat, just 10 minutes away, you can see the busy foods street along the way that you have no worried of what to do during night time.

We would definitely come back there again when we visit Japan, i do miss their smile and warm lovely feel that gave to me.

We really enjoyed this place. The couple have limited English, but we had a good laugh whilst trying to work out what the other meant. It's certainly a lovely traditional ryokan, and the showers were great too!

A taste of traditional Japanese living.

A short 3 minute walk from Odawara station lies this cute little ryokan. By day, I headed to Odawara station where I easily connected to trains for Hakone onsens and buses for Mt. Fuji. By night, I came back to this quiet little slice of traditional Japanese living. I couldn't asked for a better hub for my adventures in the Kanagawa area!

The hosts do not speak very much English but are very helpful. During the day, Mariko-san staffs the hotel. She can speak fluent English.

The place is very casual and modern security like locks on doors are not available. So, if you have really valuable things, perhaps plan to keep them in lockers at Odawara station. I felt very safe so didn't bother locking anything up.

Overall a great experience. Looking forward to visiting again.

信楽焼の浴槽も、趣あり、なかなか経験できない宿泊施設です。
ただ、ホテル並みのサービスを求めたり、他の宿泊されているお客様との譲り合いなど、利用者としてのマナーや配慮が必要になると思います。

駅からの道も近くて、わかりやすいし、食事する場所も沢山あるので、素泊まりでも大丈夫でした。外観も内装も昭和レトロな感じで良かったです。16時過ぎにチェックインしたら、狭い部屋いっぱいに布団が敷いてあって、座る場所もなかったのでびっくりしました。
お風呂も23時迄に空いてるタイミングを見つけて入って、とのことでしたが、イベント参加後22時過ぎに戻ってからも中々入れず、結局3人中2人目で23時を過ぎてしまい、ホントにバタバタの入浴でした。入浴後は、声かけてくれたら清掃します。との説明でしたが、誰も声かけせずに次々使用されてて、朝にゆっくり入りなおしたかったけど、それも諦めました。予約時に予定聞いて、予め順番を決めるなど、もう少し工夫とキチンとした説明がないと、お風呂楽しみにしてたのに、ガッカリすぎます。フロントの対応は素晴らしいけど、イベントから戻ったらスリッパも用意してなくて、声かけてやっと出してもらう始末。夜の人は愛想もなく、不親切で、残念でした。

訂的房和原先的房不一樣，事後問說旺季關係貴一倍，本來付多錢的房變成住小房。說只差2000日幣，我們都付一倍了還不先說一下。ㄧ進到房間沒多久就看到大蟑螂。第一次睡褟褟米就這樣睡不安ㄧ整晚，沒有任何道歉，就噴一噴說很多客人會吃東西，沒什麼就笑笑走了。老闆是親切，但個人覺得老闆怪怪的。小心僅慎問清楚別被騙了。

ホテルでは味わうことのできない経験でした。お風呂は交代制ですが、それも楽しかったです。大将と娘さんの人柄が暖かく、まるで親戚の家に遊びに来たかのような気持ちになりました。今回6才の息子と宿泊しましたが、今の時代、滅多に見ることができない「ねじ式の鍵」を見せられたのもよかったです。小田原駅から徒歩5分、近隣にはレストランも多く食べるのにも困りません。随所に海外のお土産が飾られ、お客さんからの愛も感じられます。とてもオススメです。

旅館はとても古風でザ・日本というようなたたずまい。古き良き日本を感じずにはいられません。隙間風，廊下の軋む音が良い雰囲気を醸し出しています。なんといっても，旅館の主がとにかくスゴイ！文章では正確に表現できません。ぜひ会いに行ってください。また，主を支える女将さんが素敵です。心温まる時間を過ごせました。

気さくな日本式旅館

宿の大将と女将さんは気さくで親切なので、気楽に泊まれる。建物自体はかなり古いが、日本の昔の旅館の味わいが残っている。セルフサービスの飲み物が用意して有るので便利だった。若干、車の音が聞こえるが煩いほどでは無いのですぐに眠れた。

古いけれど、生活で手入れが行き届いた宿でした。お風呂は交代ですが、毎回自動洗浄されるらしく、かいてきです。
自動洗浄ですがちゃんと宿にマッチしたレトロな雰囲気で素敵でした。
宿の旦那さんとおかみさんがフレンドリーで、近場のレストランの情報を親切に教えて下さいます。
年配のお二人ですが、外国人のお客さんにもちゃんと英語で対応されていて感心いたしました。
部屋にはおかみさんの趣味らしく生け花が飾ってあり、安いゲストハウスとは一線を画す宿だと思います。

히터를 좀 켜두면 좋은데 처음에는 진짜 이불이 얼음같단게 좀 그런데 히터좀 켜두면 진짜 따뜻하고 좋아요 특히나 전철역과 가까와서 그거하나는 강추

出張でこの旅館を利用したがオーナーはすごいいい感じの人。
ただトイレとお風呂が共同なところがやや不便。
また電気も部屋の外にあり、わざわざ消しに行かないといけないところを改善願いたい。
