Let's start with the good. Great location. Now the rest. The check-in was as follows: open unlocked front door, see an envelope with your name on it, follow the instructions presented in the envelope, climb two steep staircases, go to room our assigned that (like the front door) not locked, get room key hanging from a hook on the wall in the room.
(My wife said that if see was alone she would have left, not know if someone unexpected, would be in her room. There was no one else in the building to hear if she screamed. There is three hour parking out front. We asked a stranger where we could park overnight, (turned out there is a lot around the corner). This hotel advertises a bar and restaurant, but both were closed. Fortunately, there is a great Pub across the street. I wouldn't consider this a hotel. More like a Bed and Breakfast (without the breakfast). I'm sure that there are those who would find this \"hotel\" quaint. It was just not our cup of tea.., even if I could have gotten one!

I thoroughly enjoyed my two-nights stay at Charlotte Hotel. The property is charming and in excellent condition. The breakfast I ate in the on-site restaurant was delicious. The location is conveniently located within walking of restaurants, cafe, pub and a community theater. I would definitely stay here again.

This is our first time staying at the Charlotte Hotel. I have wanted to stay for a long time, but it is a little more expensive than other hotels in the area. That being said, it is totally worth it, for the location and the adorable room/building. I was a little bummed that the restaurant was not open for dinner Sunday night nor was it open for breakfast Monday morning, but I understand that after the holidays things have potentially slow down and employees likely need time off. We had no human interaction whatsoever at check-in or check out, which was a little weird. We didn’t need any assistance so that was OK but it did feel a little empty. It was nice that they had a Keurig coffee set up down in the lobby. We were able to park right on the street directly outside of the hotel. We were a couple blocks from the wharf and enjoyed how close we were to restaurants and shops. We loved our breakfast at the Foggy Place Cafecito. They sell local art in the cafe, so definitely don’t miss that! We got the room with the queen bed and the twin bed and it was so comfortable and very cozy. It was clean and the shower was amazing! Onancock is a great little town with a sweet Gilmore Girls vibe. we plan on returning next year earlier in the season so that we may enjoy some of the local festivities. We would definitely stay here again :)

Wonderful boutique hotel in the heart of downtown Onancock. Everything within walking distance! Surrounded by shops, restaurants, a short 5 min walk to the wharf.
The hotel room was quaint and quite lovely. I do wish we'd have been alerted that the bar and restaurants i side would be closed on Sunday Monday tues. Aĺl the days we stayed unfortunately, so i can't review this \"amenity \". Check in was done without staff, a simole envelope was awaiting our arrival with a key. The staff was available with a si.ole call for questions, which we did require as a quest locked the main doors and we were locked out of the building. Fast turn around by a very sweet girl came 30 mins later and let us in, as well as made guests aware to please not do this. Rooms were spotless, bed comfortable - Everything we required.

Two quick notes. Not negatives, but definitely a \"need to be aware\". There js no elevator, only stairs. We were on the 3rd floor. So you must bring up your luggage as well as yourself \"manually\". :) For us no issue, but could be an issue for other guests. On our way out, a sweet elderly woman was checking in and looked quite flustered at the prospect of dragging her luggage up even one flight. My husband gladly offered and all was well. He took luggage, i helped the sweet guest to her room. But isnt this truly what small town living should be? Helping our neighbors.
We will most definitely stay again. And we will be back as we fell in love with the area and the locals alik

Hotel was clean but quirky. It’s an older building and they’ve done what they can with it but things end up being a bit weird, like the shower hose dropping directly out of the ceiling and that same ceiling’s paint job still unfinished. Others may call it quaint and that’s probably fair.

This is a quaint b&b-style hotel in a charming town. The room was comfortable and sufficient. There's no fridge or kettle in the room, but there's a Keurig downstairs and baked goods from the bakery next door. There was a pub across the street, and we thought the festivities might keep us up, but everyone turned in early and it wasn't an issue. Overall, a very pleasant stay.

AC dripped on floor in plastic cup with paper towels. Water stains on ceiling and window shades. Water in kuerig seemed like it was there for a while, not drinkable.

No one was there when we arrived to check in so we had to call the phone number they left at The front desk, on the hotel phone since our own phones had no service. Once we finally got checked in. The room was fine but door hard to lock/unlock. No fridge in room and no coffee. WiFi was not good. We kept getting kicked off and couldn’t make calls or send texts unless we went to the Irish pub across the street. When we got back to hotel after dinner, no ice or water in lobby and no cups or water for tea. In the am, Keurig was empty and no cups. Tv kept buffering. It’s a cute place but needs better wifi and an ice maker and water/coffee.

Do to the nature of the building you can hear everyone talking and walking. We were woken at 8:30 this morning by the room above us being vacuumed, which was very loud. Overall a nice stay!

Honestly, we loved it! Cute, quaint, clean and very well maintained. Our room was great, the location was excellent and the town was beautiful.

Downside: our TV didn't work, there was no coffee in the lobby, and we saw no hotel staff from the time we checked in at 5:30 p.m. until literally when we we're checking out at 9:00 a.m. ...and the receptionist is very pleasant!

I forgotten a toothbrush- no place to get one anywhere nearby. Also - they had lovely Pellegrino waters, but no opener for them! Coffee in the room would be a huge plus. Otherwise it was wonderful!

I had stayed at this property once before and found it absolutely charming, and convenient for family visit. However, this time, when I entered my room, though it was made up and ready, it was obvious that someone had been laying on the the bed as the top was rumpled. In addition, I had a problem with the key during my last visit. This time, when I stepped out of the room just go retrieve my bag from my car out front, I closed the door, and was unable to unlock the door with the key provided. If it weren't for the chef who was resting in the room across the hall and heard my efforts to open the door, I would have been stuck (did not have cell phone with me) until someone working at the property showed up. At 3pm, when I checked in, there is no one there, hence the self check-in process. Otherwise, I appreciate the property's unique charm and location in the hidden gem that is Onancock.

The hotel looked charming on the website but it loses its patina quickly once you get inside. Very dated furnishings, staff not at desk & then didn’t answer the phone number left to call for an issue. No mention on website that 3rd flare rooms required a climb of 40 stairs. The most problematic was heating that did not work - way too hot, nothing could be done to fix so we slept with window open & heat turned off. Not enough value for the price.

Be warned - there is NO FREE BREAKFAST!!

I really wanted to like this hotel. It is quaint and has the perfect location in Onancock. It is also very quiet. But two issues. First I booked a room that said it included a free breakfast. When I inquired about this in the morning, I was told guests get a 15% discount for breakfast. Despite having paperwork indicated that I booked a room with breakfast, they would not honor it. By the way - the cost for an omelette there was $20. Second, there is no staff at the hotel other than at breakfast and dinner. They have a \"self check-in\" with an envelope that awaits you after you enter with a note inside saying your room is open and the key is in the room. Glad I was traveling with my husband because if I was solo, this would make me uncomfortable. Also, if something goes a bit off-kilter as it did for us during your stay, you need to call an 800 number to have someone help you out. This created headaches for us as we had things to do and had to wait a half hour or so before things got straightened out. So if you feel the price is right given not honoring your booking with breakfast and you aren't worried about no one being on premises, then this might work for you!

I am newly divorced and this was my first mini getaway solo. I was so excited about staying here for a night. Sadly when I arrived there was no staff and the restaurant and bar were closed and blocked off. I was able to call the manager but sadly she wasn’t even informed of the restaurant and bar being shut down and no staff on site. One of the biggest excitements was being able to enjoy the amenities but there were none.

The entire place reeked of mold, I alerted the staff that I was going to be coming in at 9, they left a note saying the room was unlocked. It was locked. Tried the afterhours number but they could not get in touch with the innkeeper. Left my number with the hotel and drove an hour away to find a place to stay for the night; never got an apology or even a contact. What a horrible, horrible little place

Recommend Mallards on the pier for dinner.

The toilet flushing mechanism was broken. Despite telling the staff and sending an email to management, we got no response. I was told when we discovered the problem immediately after checking in, we were told there were no other rooms available. When we left this morning, the maid said it had been broken when she cleaned yesterday and the repairman hadn’t shown up.
There was other small problems it nothing was couldn’t have lived with.

Perfect location and the hotel was clean! I like the early check in feature as well. Our only problem was we were told we didn't need to make reservations for the restaurant on site. So at 6 we came down to eat and they said due to short staff they are only taking the reservations on the books and that was it. I was shocked that they wouldn't even seat or serve the hotel guests. I understand they were understaffed and was possibly a rare occurrence but it was the main reason I choose this hotel due to them having a bar/ restaurant so I was a little disappointed in that. I would still definitely recommend and stay here again.

Very enjoyable stay! It’s our 2nd time here and it’s just as good or better than our fall visit. It completely matches our desired experience: quality without the fuss. Dining at the Charlotte is excellent! A real chef in that kitchen!! Highly recommend the full experience of pulling in, unloading and getting a delicious meal with quality beverages after a day of traveling. Rooms are historic styled with very comfy beds. The hotel is lovely and most is the staff could not be more accommodating . The room was bright and welcoming with charming touches. The only issue I had was there is no elevator and on ground floor rooms. I am slightly disabled and walking up 2 flights of narrow, semi-steep staris was difficult and kept me from getting out as much as I would have liked.

I was totally thrilled with the Charlotte, but that said I know it’s not for everyone. I loved the “classic feel” and the quaint small town charm. The room was everything we expected it to be. It was very clean and all of the essentials like hot water and a/c were in great working order. The restaurant was not open the night we were there, but fortunately we had reservations elsewhere. If you are looking for a small charming hotel this is absolutely a place you will enjoy!

The hotel is in a block of small boutique shops and restaurants on the main street of beautiful Onancock. It was self check in which we had read about and we expected a small room. We had only 1 chair in which to sit on and a small ottoman. What I did not like was the condition of the room. The room obviously had a water leak prior. The ceiling was touched up slightly but there was pealing painted wallpaper all the way down the wall. I expect a room to be in safe, clean condition. With the age of the building I was wondering if it was lead paint. Pictures included.

Overall the entire stay left me underwhelmed and feeling the owners didn’t care. It was all very impersonal.

Sweet boutique hotel! Proprietor was on-site and very friendly. Answered messages quickly. We got stuck in traffic and were concerned we wouldn’t check in by 7 and he was very accommodating. Hotel was full of artful touches and clean. Bedding and mattress were comfy and good quality. There were a few restaurants very close and a couple of galleries. Water was close though was a wharf and not the beach- still beautiful. Would definitely stay again!

We will definitely return to The Charlotte Hotel in very quaint Onancock, VA. It is an interesting place to stay. The room was small but adequate. The TV did not work but we had books to read. Hotels.com should not advertise \"breakfast included\" if it is just a granola bar and an apple.

What a great little getaway! The town and hotel were so cute and fun, we felt like we were in a Hallmark movie.. The food and drinks at the hotel restaurant were top notch. The room was quaint and romantic. The staff and other guests were delightful. We will be back!

Just an envelope with key waiting for us. Everything was all locked up. Next morning there was a kourig and pods. No people again.
