For over a decade, staying at Salamander Middleburg was on my bucket list. As a young professional, I always heard raving reviews but felt priced out. So when a friend and I finally secured a Presidents Day weekend stay around $600 per night, we were excited for a true luxury experience.

Unfortunately, the value simply was not there.

One of the biggest surprises was how little is actually included for guests. Spa treatments cost $195–$365, and even then you only get two hours of access to amenities afterward — with no guest discounts or privileges. Most other activities on property are similarly expensive, leaving very little to do unless you spend hundreds more. We ended up leaving the resort to go to a nearby spa, where we enjoyed full services and lunch for under $120.

The arrival experience was even more disappointing. We drove in during the rain to no greeting, no valet, no help with luggage, and no clear signage for check-in. At the desk, we waited without acknowledgment while the lone staff member worked on other tasks. When we were finally assisted, our room wasn’t ready, resulting in a one-hour wait with no apology or offer of refreshments.
The room itself was comfortable but unremarkable.
To their credit, customer service later apologized and offered breakfast, wine and late check out. Still, for $600+ per night, the service and overall experience did not match the luxury reputation.

Customer service extraordinary. Only ONE suggestion for improvement! We're a vintage couple and the hostess in bar seated us next to a party with very young, loud, unruly and distracting children. Since there were other tables open, the hostess might be made sensitive to a better seating option for us \"geriatrics\" who reared our own children with thoughts toward appropriate behavior in restaurants. Otherwise, our waiter was simply wonderful and the food was spectacular! Essentially, I have go complaint...just that one little bit to add to the hostess job description.

It’s a great hotel. However, they don’t have non-Tesla EV chargers, nor adapters for other cars. That’s already odd, given this is a fancy hotel next to DC. But it’s even odder that they don’t tell you that there’s a (paid) EV charger in the parking lot of the Town Hall, *literally* next door to the hotel’s main entrance (a 10m walk).

So when we got there with our car’s battery almost drained, we had a mini freakout until we figured out on our own how to get the car charged. Not a dealbreaker, but in theory the value of these kinds of places is that they care of the details for you.

This was the best hotel experience we have ever had. Staff went out of their way to be accommodating without you even having to ask for help. We visited for the first time to celebrate our mini moon a free our wedding and they gave us a free room upgrade to a suite. They also surprised us with a complementary bottle of champagne to our room and they even had complementary transportation available within a 5 mile radius of the resort. The estate is extremely beautiful and it’s even better that this is Black Owned. Highly recommend and worth every penny.

Overall, I LOVED the property, the friendliness of the staff, amenities (gym, dining options, fire pits, etc.) With that being said, I did noticed the shower door in our room was not cleaned properly and neither was the countertop in the bathroom. I also noticed water leaking around the base of the sink faucets. I only bring this up because at the prices you pay to stay at the Salamander, I expect everything to be exceptional. ALL in ALL those were minor, seeing that my germophobic ways will not allow me to travel without taking or purchasing cleaning products locally. So I was able to clean the shower door and counter myself, which I would have done even if I didn't notice they had not been cleaned properly. I would definitely go back.

Before my visit, I was confirmed to have an upgraded room on the top floor. However, upon arrival, there was no record of this in the system, and I was instead placed on the second floor. Additionally, I was assured that my credit card for incidental charges would not be used for the room payment, as they would charge the card I used to book the room. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Despite these issues, everything else about my stay was great.

Our family stayed at the resort along with another family with a tween and teens. We enjoyed the indoor saltwater pool as well as the archery lesson. The complimentary shuttle was very convenient. We took advantage of the service for dinner at the Goodstone Inn, about a 10 minute drive away. The breakfast buffet was also very nice. The only reason I gave a 4 was that the wait for the Gold Cup was long and it would’ve been nice to have another dinner choice besides Harriman’s.

When I arrived I was very happy that the room was already available and it was before noon. I was however disappointed to learn that the room I reserved did not have a fireplace. On the website the picture shows a fireplace for the room type I selected. When I asked what the room cost would be if I switched I was told it would be over $1,000 but since my room was already $900 it was’t much of a difference to me but there was no attempt to upsell or offer a different room. I just moved on and instead asked if I could have a late check out of 4pm. She said yes of course it’s automatic because I reserved with AMEX but I reserved through Expedia which she confirmed. I ended up getting locked out of my room at around 2:30 so when I went to the desk I was surprised to learn there was no record of my 4:00 pm request and they said I would be charged a half day rate for the extra time. I explained my checkin conversation but after speaking to a manager he said they were not able to honor it and if I stayed longer I would have to pay. I decided to immediately check out. At that time I informed the desk that the TV in the room was not working (sound in and out) and they may want to get it checked for the next guest. It was in the middle of the night when I was watching TV and I didn’t feel like going through the hassle to call the desk when I was already in bed. Outside of this I really enjoyed the facility and the conference I attended.

What I did not like was the fact that our room was not cleaned, despite the fact that we were out of our room from 10 am to 4 pm. I expect much more, particularly at the room rate we were charged.

I also did not like the fact that our balcony chairs did not have cushions, making the balcony unusable. We requested cushions because we noticed all other balcony chairs had them, but never received cushions.

Overall the property was beautiful and tranquil.

I didn't like that the room balcony area was covered with spider webs, specifically the walls and overhead. Also, the room balcony chair cushions were wet and mildewed which prevented us from sitting in the chairs to enjoy the outside from our rooms. I also noticed that all the outdoor seating on T level was not cleaned off for guests to sit.

This used to be a beautiful property,Upon arrival the view was ruined by on-site construction. This also impeded the ability to enjoy the patio in the morning. Although the hotel is fully staffed the employees are not well trained and if helpful, The food prices are sky high for mediocre food. The hotel is out of sight expensive for a below par experience.

Dispose paying an outrageous figure for one night, it was never brought to our attention that 50 houses are being built on the property out front. If you enjoy the sounds of tractors and construction, this is the place for you. Good luck discussing it with hotel staff, they were unhelpful to say the least. The food is priced like a 5-Star restaurant (including the pool food, which is comparable to a Sheetz), and doesn’t live up to the cost. If you’re on a tight schedule and skip the Spa, you will only be able to use the family pool, which is the opposite of a high-end resort experience. One night here could get you two at the Little Nell in Aspen for the cost. Completely overpriced for the experience. Tread wisely.

A note if you’re travelling with your dog

We enjoyed our stay overall. Just a note for those coming with dogs… they are definitely welcome in the pet friendly hotel rooms, treats at turndown service, a door hanger saying Pet is in the room, etc., but the staff was really inconsistent about where pets were allowed around the hotel and grounds. And officially, there’s no space (even outdoors) where you can eat and have your dog with you, not allowed on the terraces or at the pool. We still had a great visit but I don’t think we will take the dog if we go back.

Also dining options was limited - just one restaurant was open and the service was very slow. For breakfast we had to wait 30 plus mins to just be seated. The Salamander is an excellent property. A little overpriced though. I have stayed in similar and better accommodations for a third of the price. I get it though, it is an exclusive resort in an exclusive area. Really there is no competition in Middleburg, Va. that would affect the price point. It really is the only thing going on there besides small bed and breakfast establishments. The staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel rooms and facilities are always clean. The food is good. Not great but slightly above average. The outdoor activities for children and families were unique. The best thing about the place is that it is quiet and rustic. It is a great place to get away for a weekend escape. I would rate it 4 out of 5 stars.
