Rooms were clean and modern, good shower and bathroom facilities, with a view for sunrise and wonderful terrace for sunset viewing over pacific. Staff were friendly courteous and helpful, breakfast was delicious and the pool overlooking valleys on both pacific and mountain sides was an incredible place to rest and relax! All for an excellent deal as well!

Bed was comfortable, view was great, but stay was unpleasant overall. For the considerable price, no help with luggage. Remote location on dirt road. Mosquitos in room. Loud groaning air conditioner. Weak breakfast of fruit, bottled juice, unseasoned eggs and plain toast woth no butter or jam. They could not break a $100 bill. Worst, we got no shower but a trickle of cold water. No apology or compensation. Don't come here.

Wonderful Hotel! Loved staying there!

This was one of the best hotels we've stayed while visiting Costa Rica. This hotel is privately owned by John & Janet and they were amazing hosts. The breakfast in the morning was incredible. The on-site resturant was amazing. Shout out to both Geiner and Yuly who made our stay great. We loved our room and watching the wildlife every morning right outside our balcony. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Beautiful spot with nice, comfortable rooms. There was a sloth hanging out the first day. Nice pool! AC! The owner John is a really good and cool guy, I liked his company. The only negative- I booked a three night stay and came to find out the second day, the kitchen was closed. The property is remote and not easy to access food. I was aggravated enough by it where I booked transportation the for next day and left early.

La Alma de Ojochal is a lovely boutique hotel! We stayed for four nights and enjoyed every minute. We enjoyed a live show with Ken and John and a live show performed by Shorty Hills while we were there. The room was comfortable (the bed was heavenly) and the newly remodeled bathrooms were gorgeous! Our favorite spot was the balcony where we enjoyed a serenade by 8 toucans 15 meters away. Scarlet Macaws cruised in the early morning and a lot of other beautiful bird species entertained us. The breakfast by José was AMAZING and our friend Alan made sure we were taken care of. The pool area is beautiful. The owner, John, is kind and welcoming. I would give him an A as a host. We thoroughly enjoyed chatting with him. He is also an EXTREMELY talented musician! We live in San Mateo, CR, and have traveled extensively throughout the country. La Alma de Ojochal is our new home away from home in the Southern Zone! We will be back! Thank you John, Janet and staff for a wonderful experience! 😘❤️

We were honored to be Alma Ojochal's first guests since the pandemic. John and Janet received us with open arms (or elbows actually, since we maintained social distancing). We were there for 1 night, but it was fabulous. Each room has a balcony with ocean view. The bed and pillow were extremely comfortable. Pool area was awesome! This is my favorite place to stay in the area! You cannot beat the location! The views are stunning in every direction, the pool is awesome, the food is amazing, the rooms are very comfortable, the live music is always super fun and the owners are great people! I highly recommend staying at least two nights to enjoy the whole experience!

We had a great 3 night stay at alma de Ojochal, the room was wonderful, comfy king size bed, view of the jungle looking over the ocean, super clean, fridge and coffee maker in the room. I saw each morning and watched the birds fly outside of my balcony... so relaxing. The hotel is connected to the Bamboo House that has music 7 nights a week, no worries you cant' hear it from your room, food and music are great. Pool is nice and breakfast is included... great price for a wonderful property!

We had a great time at this boutique hotel. John and Janet are the owners and are very personable. The staff seems to really care that you have a nice experience and everyone works together. Owner John also plays music at the on-site restaurant, The Bamboo Room, and we had a great time eating dinner and listening to music in this open air restaurant. Overall had a very pleasant stay and will return again if we go back to Costa Rica.

This place was amazing, John and Janet are the best hosts ever. If you want to enjoy a secluded, private hotel, great staff, great food, this is your place to stay. There’s only 5 rooms at this great hotel so it’s very private, you get to enjoy a beautiful view of the jungle and beach from your patio. John and Janet can help you with any tours you would like to do. There Bamboo room has a live band every night. I can say much more about this hotel and staff but if you’re traveling to Costa Rica, you should come find out yourself. Thank you John and Janet, you made our trip to Costa Rica a memorable one.

Wonderful views of the ocean and the mountains from our room as it had windows and terraces facing both . Great bar and restaurant on site with beautiful sunset view. Live entertainment with requests from guests welcome. Hospitable owners and staff. Very close to a beach where turtles nest and we were lucky enough to see some released to the ocean !

Lovely, quiet hotel with stunning views.

We stayed 4 nights at Alma de Ojochal and enjoyed each one. Owned by Canadians, the hotel price includes breakfast with lots of fruit, eggs any style, coffe and juice. The eating area overlooks the Pacific Ocean, a beautiful garden and a pool. You can also have dinner there.

The area is very convenient to all the activities in the Ballena area. John and Janet, the owners, will help you find your way to anywhere you want to go. John is also a musician and plays at the adjacent night club almost every night. Fun place to go with great drinks and dinner if you want it too. Fortunately, there is no sound that seeps into the units at the hotel.

Something to note - when you approach the very steep but short driveway to the hotel for the first time, it can be a bit daunting. But after you do it once (put even your automatic rental car in low), it will be easier and not as scary.

Our new favorite hotel in Costa Rica

My wife and I live in Playa Flamingo on the northern Pacific coast of Costa Rica. The last time we ventured south of Dominical on the southern Pacific coast (4 years ago) the road was terrible and we turned back. I'm happy to report the road is now greatly improved - and there is a great new hotel to serve as our destination. It is an intimate setting on the mountainside overlooking the ocean with only five rooms in total. They offer great hospitality, great food, live music every night (also great), and beautiful views of the beaches and surrounding mountains. We spent the morning whale watching and the afternoon at the pool. We definitely intend to go back.

So when we arrived after a long day of travel, we were greeted with a cold beer from the owners Janet and John. We felt an immediate connection with Janet, John, and the entire staff of the resort. The live entertainment, and food were excellent. We stayed for 10 days and met people from all over the world. We had a blast with all the locals. Yes it is possible to get to it with a two wheel drive trust me. There is a lot to do and see in the area. Very much enjoyed our stay. We will be back in the future but maybe as a local. Lovely scenic small niche hotel perched on the hil

This was my best hotel in Costa Rica this far. John and his wife are from Canada and are living the dream. Perched on a ridge on a hill, with only five rooms, but a lovely pool and restaurant and bar overlooking the ocean and daily sunsets, this was perfect. I especially loved the daily live entertainment in the restaurant-bar.

The Alma was a great hotel. The breakfast tasted great every morning, the view was awesome being a mile from the Pacific Ocean, but up on a hill so we could see every sunset. The staff was very friendly at the restaurant, and the nightly music was nice to listen to. I would definitely come here again. The Ojochal area is filled with great Tico's, American, Canadian, & European retirees that all get along great. A lot of people speak both English and Spanish in this area which is very helpful to us on vacation. Most menus in this area are in both languages.

Perfect way to close our Vacation

The hotel was perfect for our last night in Costa Rica. We had a spectacular view and our room was very clean and had all the amenities we needed. We were allowed to check in early because the rooms were ready. Hotel staff was extremely nice and gave us great tips on where to go to the beach. The breakfast was good, the pool was also nice. I don't have a single complaint.

Even better than we expected!

We knew from our arrival that this was a special place. After parking, we walked to the reception area and were greeted by Juan Carlo. He was incredibly courteous and welcoming.

We were showed to our rooms, where he pointed out little features that were available to us, and how to make our stay as comfortable and relaxing as possible. We dropped our suitcases and were immediately drawn to the VERY large balcony overlooking the immediate jungle and the crashing waves on the coast. The balcony was perfect for enjoying a cup of coffee and reading a book when the afternoon rains came in. The bed was comfy and the room felt very light and airy, thanks to the tall ceilings and white linens. The bathroom was more than adequate with a sizable shower area and taller counter for the sink.

For dinner we opted to try the restaurant on-site the first night, The Bamboo Room. We loved it so much, we decided to skip the other well-reviewed and highly rated restaurants in the area because we felt like we found our spot.

Breakfast each morning was simple, but very tasty. The views, as mentioned before, were an absolutely stunning way to start each day.

This truly felt like we had been welcomed into the home of an old friend you haven't seen in a while.

Do not waste you time and money looking at other more expensive places. This place really is the ALMA (\"Soul\" in Spanish) of Ojochal.

Beautiful sunset views

We stayed here for 3 nights and it was fantastic. We spent 2 nights in an upper level room which had an amazing balcony for watching the sunsets. We enjoyed it so much we stayed an extra night in one of the more spacious downstairs rooms. The onsite resteraunt was also good, and had live music every night, try the fish tacos! Owners are lovely and full of good recommendations for local activities and sights. Staff was friendly and accomodating. By far one of the best places we stayed in Costa Rica!

Can I give the Alma a 20 out of 5?

We stayed at the Alma and it couldn't have been better. The staff were incredible--everyone from John the owner to the assistant managers, waiters, and cleaners. We felt so welcomed and really enjoyed our three days there. Everyone kept asking if we needed anything to make our stay better. The room was great and the bathroom well equipped. The huge covered deck area with a stunning view and frig were a great bonus. The restaurant was excellent too--we ended up eating there two of the three nights. Reasonable prices and great quality. I can't wait to go back. Just superb!!

If you are looking for a relaxing break look no further Alma is the hotel for you! All rooms with views across tree tops and the ocean behind, watch the sun go down as the forest below comes to life. Take breakfast while macaw's fly through the tree tops and monkeys play beneath.
If you enjoy fine dining at reasonable prices you will enjoy the evening meal, served in a fantastic setting at the sister hotel El Castillo only 2 minutes away.

Very quant little hotel with a great personality. Although tough to find, it was well worth the trip down south of Dominical. We arrived late from San Jose airport and were greeted promptly by Jose whom turned out to be an awesome host. We were taken to our casita which gave a excellent view of the ocean from our balcony. The pool and lounge area/grounds were well kept and you can tell they pay close attention to detail. The owners were very welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed to ensure the best stay. By the time it was ready time to leave, I wished we had another week to stay at this hotel. I would definitely go back and recommend this spot to all whom wish to get away for a private adventure. The only downside is it's not that close to any other major tourist spot so your essentially on your own which is not a bad thing!

Very stylish hotel, extremely friendly staff

I stayed with my wife at this hotel for one night and I loved it. First of all, the manager is wonderful. He goes above and beyond to make your stay very pleasant. The view is beautiful and the swimming pool very tasteful. In general, the architecture and attention to detail are excellent. I only have two small reproaches: the air conditioning in the room was constantly blowing in my face (although it is very quiet), and it is nearly impossible to get up the hill to the entrance without a 4x4.

Small, boutique hotel overlooking the Pacific.

Stayed here for 6 nights in February 2014 in a comfortable, large room with overhead fan and air-conditioning.
Staff and owner were very friendly, bringing water to you unasked and offering other drinks as well when you were sitting by the lovely pool.
Sunsets were beautiful from the bar over the Pacific Ocean. Birdlife was spectacular from the gardens and the open air restaurant.
Hotel is situated on top of a hill, roughly 1km up a gravelled road which is steep in places, but easily negotiable if you take your time.
Food is available at the sister hotel in the evenings, about 600 metres away and there are plenty of restaurants in the surrounding area, the closest being a 15 minute walk.
Having the use of a vehicle would be advantageous to explore the area and get to beaches etc. We loved the beach at Pinuela, plenty of shade but it is in the Marine Conservation area with a warden, so there is a small charge until 4pm.

Surprise Oasis

Found this place looking for last minute spots during the hot season while cruising the west coast. The hotel is off the beaten path. Overall the most impressive feature was the service from the owners and their crew, especially David, who was in my opinion the \"alma\" of the property.

Super quiet, very unique and special place. Ojochal turned out to be one of my favorite, if not, favorite areas of Costa Rica. Very quiet, good food, good beaches and kind generous people. Make sure you make reservations at Citris or Exotica before you come, they are booked all the time and rated as some of Costa Rica's best cuisines.

Would definitely stay again. Mucho Gracias Alma.

Scott was extremely friendly and helpful. The setting was beautiful high on a hill overlooking the Pacific. A 4wheel drive is recommended as the road up is not paved and steep at times. The room had a beautiful patio to sit out on and see the pacific. There was no TV in the room, so bring a book or two. Breakfast was well prepared and had great views

We had a wonderful stay! My wife and I were driving down from Honduras with our dog, so after a long day on the road this was a amazing stop. The location is beautiful, views of the ocean and hills. A delightful deck overlooking trees teaming with birds, great place to watch the jungle come to life with a cup of coffee in the morning. Scott and Russel are great hosts, and the banana pancakes! We highly recommend Alma and will definitely return and stay for longer than one night!

Incredible Place to Stay!!!! Almost like PARADISE

We have been to Ojochal several times and in fact stayed in this place prior to new ownership. Now this place is a big WOW. Russell and Scott are amazing hosts - taking care of our every need. We were greeted at our car by Russell and Rob who assisted us with our luggage. The pool is to die for and In the evening, we were served wine by Scott and had glorious conversation in an intimate seating area above the pool with other hotel guests. The morning breakfast was like being served in a gormet restaurant! Fruit, juice, coffee, delicious coconut pancakes one day and the best omelet I have had in long time the first day there. I felt like royalty being served each course and making sure I had everything I needed. Coffee, juice, discussion of the surroundings - I felt like I was in a five star restaurant being served by the finest waiters. The surroundings are amazing whether it be the delightful decor to the red macaws that I saw flying over the valley. Playa Tortuga in the background. The private patio in the room was large and a great place to relax. Luscious white cotton sheets and a lightweight white comforter made me feel like I was in one of the finest hotels anywhere. The sounds of the ocean can be heard from the room but we opted for the air conditioning. If you are looking for a hotel in the area, this is a fantastic place to go. Five star all the way.

\"Boutique paradise\"

The Hotel is beautiful specially if you are looking for a quiet and relax place to stay. We had an incredible experience and the staff was very friendly. The breakfast is DELICIOUS.

Wonderful experience. Beautiful setting as you are in the mountains with ocean and surf to view facing West and mist and clouds hugging the Eastern slopes, with the soothing sounds of the sea in the background. Convenient location to branch off to the North and South for exploring within 100 miles of the coastline. Russell and Scott , the owners , availed themselves whenever Karen or I had a question and their Costa Rican manager David offering more insights to Costa Rican life and he also was extremely helpful with intelligent perspectives that were easily appreciated with his mastery of English and appreciation for Western way of life. The grounds were immaculate as well as the entire hotel structure. Most nights, the star filled sky was so inspiring to soak in ,because in Chicago we can observe maybe a handful of stars at night.

Notre séjour à Hotel Alma de Ojochal a été absolument magique. Dès notre arrivée, Ana, la responsable, nous a accueillis avec une grande gentillesse et beaucoup de professionnalisme. Elle est attentionnée, disponible et veille à chaque détail pour que l’expérience soit parfaite.
L’hôtel est petit, intimiste et plein de charme. On s’y sent privilégié, presque comme dans un refuge exclusif au cœur de la nature. La vue est tout simplement à couper le souffle… et les couchers de soleil sont parmi les plus beaux que nous ayons vus. Un moment suspendu chaque soir.
Mention spéciale au chef : la cuisine est excellente, raffinée et savoureuse. Chaque repas est une expérience en soi. Le personnel est adorable, toujours souriant et attentionné.
À noter : l’accès nécessite absolument un 4x4, la route est escarpée — mais une fois en haut, la récompense est grandiose.
Nous recommandons sans hésitation. Un endroit exceptionnel pour se ressourcer et vivre un moment unique au Costa Rica.

Das Zimmer war makellos. Das Personal war unglaublich hilfsbereit, flexibel und freundlich. Die Lage des Hotels ist außergewöhnlich und die Sonnenuntergänge auf dem Meer sind atemberaubend. Die Anlage ist sehr gepflegt. Wir haben die Ruhe gesucht und gefunden.

Absolut empfehlenswert! Wir haben zwei Tage hier verbracht und wurden überaus herzlich empfangen. Auch bei der Buchung von Ausflügen etc. wurde uns sehr geholfen. Das Hotel bietet einen atemberaubenden Blick auf den Sonnenuntergang. Gleich am Anreisetag wurden wir von einem Tukan und Affen in den Bäumen begrüßt. Das Essen ist ebenfalls fantastisch. Der Koch bereitet alle Gerichte mit so viel Liebe und Hingabe zu. Es war mit das beste Essen und Hotel, das wir in Costa Rica hatten. Ich komme auf jeden Fall wieder!
