A fantastic stay at The Fortress Resort & Spa. The rooms were lovely — definitely book a sea view room if you can. One thing to note: if you leave the balcony doors open, expect the humidity to creep into the room pretty quickly. Small trade-off for that ocean view though.

The service throughout our stay was excellent, and breakfast was genuinely one of the highlights of the day. There’s a huge variety available, with most hot items ordered à la carte. Pro tip: specify if you want multiple pancakes, sausages, etc., otherwise you may receive just one portion item at a time!

We didn’t really use the hotel for lunch or dinner, mostly because we enjoyed exploring the coastline and supporting smaller local restaurants instead. The hotel menu looked very good, but pricing is naturally much higher than local spots nearby. The same applies to the spa.

The beachfront pool was amazing — peaceful, relaxing, and very quiet during our stay, likely due to the current misconceptions about travelling to Sri Lanka. Honestly, we experienced absolutely no issues whatsoever. Tourist areas feel safe, organised, and well protected. Sri Lanka deserves visitors right now, so get yourself here — it’s totally worth it.

The beach beside the hotel is beautiful to walk along, although the currents can be quite strong for swimming. There are safer swimming spots nearby if you travel a little. One of our favourite little surprises was regularly spotting sea turtles swimming in a calm patch near the hot

The Fortress Resort and Spa is a five-star hotel. It boasts a prime location—if your travel destination is the famous "stilt fishermen," several such sites are just a two-minute walk from the hotel. From the hotel grounds, guests can enjoy panoramic, spectacular views of the ocean. The hotel offers top-notch service and world-class facilities. Its restaurant, however, is merely average; the variety of food available does not quite justify the price point.

We absolutely loved this gorgeous hotel !! The infinity pool and beach frontage is just spectacular, rooms and bathrooms are huge and beautiful ! Food was excellent, and staff very attentive ! The Christmas decor especially the lights around the hotel was breathtaking ! Would highly recommend !

The Fortress is a simply magnificent Resort. This beach front Resort has all the facilities you can ever want for a relaxing and truly enjoyable experience. (pools, spa, gym, great restaurants and Bar, delicious and an array of foods just to name a few.)

The staff are amazing, very hospitable and always welcoming and friendly.

We travelled from Australia and stayed two nights in the Ocean room which was very spacious and clean with all the facilities you need.

We had our Wedding Ceremony at the Fortress and there is simply no words to describe the wonderful experience we had.

Every aspect of our wedding ceremony was professionally and meticulously arranged by the staff at the Fortress. From organising the necessary marriage documents to the floral arrangements, wedding bouquets and bower, decorations, cake, celebrant, music, photography, special celebratory dinner, and the list goes on., we couldn’t have been happier with all of these things and the very best service we received at the Fortress.

A special mention to our wedding coordinator ‘GAYANI’ who went above and beyond to make sure that our wedding ceremony was successful and memorable. Her attention to detail and dedication to make sure we were happy with all the arrangements is something we will always remember and be grateful for.

From the time we arrived until we checked out the service was exceptional. All the staff never fail to smile and greet us. The food was delicious & the atmosphere was refreshing.

The facility is constantly maintained to the very highest of standards and the location is perfect. The beach is fabulous and the view from the hotel superb. We went out of season following our son’s cricket tour and this is a lovely base. We booked months ago and I should have checked the rates when I arrived as I had free cancellation. If I had have done I would have saved a lot.

The hotel is having major refurb work done whilst we have been here but to be honest I haven’t really noticed.

Just Amazing, it was the perfect environment to unwind and relax after a busy couple of weeks. I ended my vacation to Sri Lanka at the Fortress and I loved it. This may be the first time I've given a 10/10 review. I can't fault this property - the room, the staff, the food plus so much more were all fantastic.

Even the beach also gets a 10/10 for being a long and quiet stretch without 'on the beach restaurants'. Totally peaceful.

The Fortress was recommended to me by a friend and I look forward to passing it on and to coming back myself.

Outstanding....deserves high rating!

Really superb property. Even though it has a heritage look, it's relatively newly built, so very comfortable, even if lacking in authenticity. Stunning location right by sea, but nothing outside to do, within walking distance. Bed so comfortable, fabulous view and nice restaurant area, with good breakfast. It wasn't clear to me until I was checking. out if there was a 'natural' pool in the coral area or was it just the swimming pool they said to use, as not allowed to swim in sea due to waves (fair advice). If there is a natural pool safe for swimming they should let guests know as I would have liked to swim in the sea and not just the pool. Perfectly clean and staff super responsive. Bath very nice but shower had very low water pressure. Highly recommend if you want somewhere comfortable and quiet. Not a lively resort with activities, but a true chill out spot by nature. Loved listening to waves from balcony in evening. Would love to return some day!

Large style beach resort. Very good dining and drink options across the 3 restaurants. Initially stayed in a room with a plunge pool which was too humid for our liking but had a half day's stay in another room upstairs without a pool and it was very nice with great views of the facility, pool and ocean.

We love The Fortress

Our third stay at the Fortress, it never disappoints.

Beautiful hotel and grounds, food is amazing with full menu room service. Can sit on a sun lounge at high tide and watch turtles feeding in the ocean in front of you or release baby turtles from the hatchery on site.

What sets it apart is the service, our son is 5 and was so well cared for by the staff.

Amazing property with infinity pool and great proximity to sea. Nice big rooms with great comfort and rustic interiors. Unique design of the room and bathroom within. While not of much beach area and not recommended for any sea sports. However the Welingama beach is a great beach and great for sea sports.

Crystal Clear Ocean Water and Spotless Beaches

One of the best hotels in all of Sri Lanka! The facility is extremely intimate, personal and peaceful. The rooms and decor are beautiful and modern. The ocean water was crystal blue and extremely clean. The area of Koggala is very quiet and serene. I high recommened this hotel!

Wonderful boutique hotel with amazing staff

We stayed at this great hotel for four nights and received amazing service from our personal Butler, Janaka. Food and drink options were great - with both a la carte and different themed buffet options every evening. Our suite was huge and extremely well equipped - the nicest hotel room I have ever stayed in. The only problem is that the bar is now set too high for future hotel stays!! Highly recommended.

Fortress is definitely a resort at which to relax

This was the 5th stop on our tour - basically to relax. When we arrived, the tall front walls and entrance gates resembled a fortress. Beyond was a magnificent veranda and the sea! Reception staff were very attentive and greeted us while our room was readied. The room was on the ground floor, large, comfortable and included a plunge pool.
Food options were many, including buffet options. The breakfast buffet was excellent, including Sri Lankan food.
Staff fabulous.
A lovely place to stay and relax. We will definitely stay there again.

The worst food we ate in Sri Lanka

Unfortunately the quality of the food really ruined our stay. I would not recommend staying here to anyone that likes good food, especially given the other amazing options there are in Sri Lanka.
In particular, the evening meals were a huge let down. Not made to order, either spicy or bland, and generally disappointing flavour.
The breakfast had a made to order egg station which was good, and the pool food did offer some good options.
The staff generally were polite, and friendly. Unfortunately this does little to ease the disappointment of sending food back due to the poor quality.

All aspects excellent. Food is good and can save 10% but you must order on the App regardless of what the serving staff may say. Recommend short afternoon visit to Herman Tea Factory by local tuc-tuc.

Perfect getaway. We came from dubai for 5 nights and enjoyed every moment of it. You can watch wild turtles in the sea from the poolside sun beds.

20 minute tuktuk ride in to Galle area (approx 800-1000LKR).

2.5hrs from CMB airport (approx 11600lkr in AC car with Colombo Airport Taxi)

Definitely worth getting the sea view rooms. Waking up to and hearing the waves right outside the room was amazing.

Don't book airport transfer or tuktuk's via the hotel as they are massively inflated prices.
