The Morning prayers was a fantastic experience. We got a chance to participate after official service was completed. They took the time to explain the temple and Buddha. I have zero complaints. The only thing that wasn’t expected is the heater in the room die in the middle of the night . My opinion remains unchanged despite the setback. The staff really goes above and beyond to help with anything. I felt like I was received like family for overnight stay. If I was to come back to Koyasan I’ll be more than happy to stay at fudoin. Thanks to the staff for a memorable experience. I will not forget.

Excellent, but overpriced

Everything was excellent, people are very welcoming, nice and kind. The prayer in the morning is not to be missed.
The food is vegan, and it is ok, but surely not the best in Japan.
Overall, I think the whole experience is overpriced.

Despite Fudoin being a temple, the accommodations were truly excellent. Both the staff and the monks were extremely pleasant and helpful. It struck a balance of being respectful to the space with luxury.
We opted for a garden view room and weren't disappointed. For the small extra cost we got a private toilet and bath, the most space we've had in Japan, and an unbeatable view. We spent more time in the room than expected.
The food was great and the dining room and dinner rooms were both beautiful and felt spacious. The 9p curfew was later than many neighboring locations meaning we had time to do the night tour in Okonuin, which was very special.
The morning ceremony was also well balanced for westerners. It was in Japanese and English where appropriate and let the audience participate.
Koya was lovely and not overcrowded (3rd week of April). Refreshing after coming through the tourist crush in Kyoto. Overall a great place to spend time.

A very unique one night only experience. The property is immaculate. The dinner was a wonderful tasting of many things I had never tried, all very good and filling. Breakfast was not as good. The hotel staff was very accommodating and kind. The morning prayer was peaceful and beautiful. The only complaint is the sleeping mats are paper thin and extremely uncomfortable, even after placing one on top of the other with all the blankets it was nearly unbearable. Neith my wife nor I got more than two hours of sleep. It's too bad, because we have slept in other Ryokan style places that were traditional but not painful. For this reason I would advise asking in advance for something better to sleep on.

The temple is lovely and the area is rich with history. Dinner and breakfast were delicious and ample. The room was very comfortable for our party of six, with beautiful views, a private bath, and large sitting area. The beds are futons, so they may not be comfortable for those who have back/physical issues. The morning prayer service is a must. The monks and staff were wonderful. A memorable stay!

Visit to (modern) Koyasan

Stayed one night at this Shukubo. The place was beautiful - temple, garden, room, surrounding area. My husband is a Vegan, so he was very happy with the meal.

However, I found it to be a little dissapointing. Shukubo evolved during the past 20 years, and now catered to foreign visitors. The meal was all vegan, but not the old fashioned Shoshin food, they were too modern and too catered to foregners. The morning service was also modified to suit foreigners. The place has lost its authenticity, along with much, much higher price. We will not be going back to Koyasan again. I liked the old Koyasan in the past.

Excellent service and very low key. I got up early in the morning and wanted a coffee. I went to the front desk and asked if they had coffee and a man directed me to a coffee making machine that was excellent. I wanted a second cup and needed change the man helped me out. Later I went to the morning service and come to find out the man helping was the reverend of the temple! Super nice! Morning service was excellent!

Absolutely wonderful experience!!
The room and all of the facilities were exceptionally clean.
Dinner and breakfast were delicious. The various flavors, textures, and colors were a real feast for the senses.
The morning ceremony was very interesting and meaningful. It started the day off on a very serene note.
Koyasan is a very peaceful, sacred, and beautiful place, and Koyasan Syukubou Fudou-in was the perfect place to stay.
I will definitely return the next time I visit Japan.

WONDERFUL.

I cannot say enough great things about this experience. My husband and I generally stay in nice Western-style hotels while traveling, so we were a little wary about trying something different. But we loved every minute we spent here. Fudouin is ancient and traditional, with a few perfect modern/updated touches in the rooms that made it feel luxurious. The monks were kind and accommodating, the food was delicious (and so beautiful), and the morning ceremony is not to be missed. It's also a quick walk to the Okunoin cemetery, which is definitely worth a visit. Thank you to Fudouin for allowing visitors on your beautiful property, and for giving us an experience we'll be talking about forever -- or at least till our next trip back.

Such a relaxing evening. The dinner and breakfast are amazing, do NOT miss out. The room was so clean and the temple was beautiful. The onsen was relaxing. Takes a second to get up to Koyasan so plan accordingly. Loved the morning service as well. The monks were extremely welcoming and patient.

Good stay but uncomfortable sleeping arrangements

We have stayed in a number of residences with futon sleeping arrangements but found these futons particularly uncomfortable - too thin and therefore very firm. I also had a skin reaction to the fabric of the bedding so had a very uncomfortable night’s sleep. A shame because everything else was fine

Great temple lodging hotel!!

Had amazing experience staying in this temple lodging. Staff (Buddhist monks) were super friendly and attentive. Highly recommend getting garden view room as the view is breathtaking. The entire experience was great with hotel, location, and the area. The only thing beds were a bit uncomfortable which was expected to be a part of this experience as traditional accommodation. Will stay again.

Tranquility in the mountains of Koyasan

If you want to experience traditional Japanese ryokan style accommodations then the is the place. Very remote place in mountains. Meals are great, a vegetarian. Close to most attractions and walkable to main town. Don’t miss the morning service. They guide you through the prayers and give you a primer sheet. May be a little challenging if you don’t know Japanese.

The monastery was the highlight of our trip. Beautiful, atmospheric accommodations in a large, traditional ryokan-style room in excellent condition. Food was fantastic- elaborate, kaiseki-style served in a private dining room. Don’t miss morning prayers before breakfast in the beautiful temple.

Fantastiskt boende med helt underbar personal. Jättegod mat och väldigt roligt att vara med på ceremonin på morgonen. Det var ganska kallt när vi var där så värmaren lät ganska mycket. Fint med eget bad med utsikt mot trädgården. Borde bokat mer än en natt.

Es una experiencia intermedia entre hotel elegante y estadía en templo.
Recepción simple, pocas explicaciones Hace mucho frío en todas partes del establecimiento.
La habitación es muy grande, suelo de tatami y ventanas con papel de arroz. Al llegar solo hay una mesita y sillas bajas japonesas y una bandeja con té verde. hay un pequeña terraza con sillas y vista a un jardín. hay una estufa a parafina que calienta pero también ensucia mucho el ambiente. Luego prendimos el AA en vez de la estufa que no calienta tanto pero es más limpio.
Salimos a dar una breve vuela por los alrededores y nos encontramos con varios templos cerca, uno muy hermoso subiendo a través de muchos toros hasta un bosque.
Al regresar nos sirvieron la cena, en una sala hermosa japonesa antigua solos nosotros. Estaba ya preparado con muchos platitos de colores. Comida vegetariana abundante, sabores suaves (arroz, papas, miso, verduras con distintas preparaciones) bastante abundante, saludable y liviana. Muy bien preparada y presentada.
Al volver a la pieza habían movido la mesa e instalado 4 futones en el suelo. Pensamos que pasaríamos mucho frío pero soportamos. Es difícil dormir en el suelo cuando no estás acostumbrado
Luego pudimos usar el Onsen
Temprano participamos de una breve ceremonia donde los monjes recitaron sutras, enseñaron una breve meditación y rezo con incienso. Esperaba que esta parte de la experiencia fuera mayoritaria.
Después desayuno japonés en una hermosa sala.

A spectacular stay from start to finish. The location is beautiful, the staff incredibly kind and attentive, and the ambiance truly special. We had a very pleasant stay. The food was excellent, everything was spotless, and the staff was exceptionally attentive. We especially enjoyed the morning ceremony, which made the experience memorable.

On the downside, the stay felt quite expensive by any standard. Considering the price, it was disappointing that every step in the hallway could be heard, and that drinks other than tea were not included.
