The room was clean enough but it is an Old Building . The meals were great and very enjjoyble. but the staff were absolutely SUPERB. It is a family owned and run Hotel and you could not wish for better attention or Help.No it is not 5 star but the Staff make up for the Minor faults. thank you all for a Very Pleasant stay. Haakon.

A disappointing stay at the Northern Hotel. Room 111 had a strange smell when we opened the door. There was only a small window so the room was very dark. Bed was awful as you could feel the springs of the mattress and the pillow (only one each) was very flat so we didn’t have a good sleep. There were cobwebs on the walls and wallpaper was coming off the wall near the window. Toilet seat was loose.
On the plus side the staff were pleasant and the evening meal was good. Maybe we were just unlucky and other rooms were okay.

Nice wide hall and stairs, Room was very comfortable with a great size bathroom, We had tea in the restaurant there and it was very very good, We had a drink in the bar after on a Friday night and it was good only 2 other people in the bar so talked together, Great place to stay, owner's where very friendly and welcoming.

The Northern is a lovely hotel, rooms clean, plenty of storage, toiletries, kettle & TV. We had dinner one night of our 2 night stay, food was delicious. We had breakfast one morning, I had full vegetarian breakfast, my friend full Scottish, both delicious & filling!

Had a bit of a problem checking in ,as all the doors were locked ,after 5 mins someone eventually came and let me in , staff were friendly , rooms were big and clean , hotel is in town centre close to everything , i would recommend the hotel as it offers good value for money

Old and tired, checkout took half an hour.

Old and tired hotel. Staff are polite but do not understand customer service. Breakfast expensive for what it was. Unable to charge meals to room (\"due to people doing a runner in the morning without paying their bill\"!) I had ticked, pay on arrival and had I not told them, could have walked out. Once I paid my bill they charge 50p more than the bill which they could not give me until later by email! Staying in area again next week, it will not be at the Northern Hotel.

If you have to go to Brechin stay here

The hotel is looking very tidy and looks to have recently been redecorated. We had a warm friendly welcome from the family. My room was clean and well appointed, with a nice hot shower. Big shout out to the chef as our evening meal and breakfast were delicious. Would definitely stay here again!

This is a great place and I have stayed here before. The reason for not giving it 5 stars across the board is the mattress in my room was old and bumpy. If the bed would have been more comfortable I would have given 5 stars on every level.

Lovely family run hotel, current owners took over 12 months ago.
Some communal areas looked tired but the room and facilities within were really good.
Owners were attentive.
They have just changed their menu and offer excellent variety of evening meals, worth booking a table during your stay.

We had a late check in and had to call for somebody to let us in. A little inconvenient when you do not have a GB phone.
Place was clean but as most of the time the pillows are like rocks.
Staff was friendly and got us another towel as there was only one in the room for 2 guests.
Our room faced the street and it got busy in the morning.
All in all it was alright for a short stay.

One night stop in Brechin

Needed a one night stay ahead of an appointment in the area the next day and The Northern fitted the bill. Very friendly welcome and check in, good service throughout (special mention for Rachel who looked after us really well for our evening meal and breakfast). Both rooms we had were spacious, clean and comfortable, while both faced onto the main road they were quiet and we had a good nights sleep. Nice breakfast and easy check out.

Great little hotel

The northern is a lovely hotel, nicely kept and looked after. The couple who own it are lovely and all the staff are really helpful. The food is of a good standard too, well presented and served. Nothing was too much trouble.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will stay again when next in the area.

Poor service, not clean and building needs work

The hotel is run down and understaffed. It took a long time just to check in as nobody was manning the reception. There was very loud music playing until 1am that was easily audible in the rooms. The room was dusty, smelled damp, had mould in the showers. The breakfast was not high quality and there was only 1 staff member to serve and clean up after all of the guests. At £127 this is a rip off.

A lovely place to stay . Excellent staff and very good food. The reception area and lounge is so cozy with a fireplace and coal fire, Rooms are comfortable with Coffee or tea making facilities. Excellent shower. A very old traditional hotel that makes you feel good.

Parking facilities are awful. Not enough parking spaces on the car park or outside. The amount of staff they had on at one time were unable to cope with the guests. There would be one person trying to run the bar and the reception and were waiting to see someone at reception a number of times. The rooms were fair for the price and had the utilities you would expect to find and was clean to a fair standard. There were two bars in the actual hotel (connected to a bar, shared car park) but one did not accept card and would only allow you to charge drinks to your room if you paid on arrival. The girls and the gentlemen who worked in the restaurant and desk were nice and helpful, however one gentlemen who I assume was a manager because he was not in uniform was quite rude.
