The hot breakfast was very cold and not nice. The location was 10-15 minute walk to the town centre.

The breakfast could be more generous and fresher. It would have been nice if there is enough juice for everyone, not just water. The bathroom could have been supplied with bath mat and hand towel.

The garden and the plants would be nicer if maintained regularly. There are litter in them and the path to the rooms could have been swept.

facilities was dark, old, dingy and not welcoming. Some of the staff was not friendly and there was no housekeeping services. No mention when checking in. I had to bring dirty towels for clean ones. Asked to clean out garbage cans, didn’t happen. Felt ignored. In addition, wifi (they say management is working on It & 12 days later still not working!) doesn’t work in rooms or hallways, thin old tatty towels & blankets, no air conditioning, leaky veranda, mouldy shower areas, no elevators, bugs/flies in bathroom. Totally unacceptable accommodations!
Surprise to read 4 stars reviews on Expedia site!!!

this hotel can be an inspired scene for a ghost movie, with amenities in the 1930s, shaking internet, and a wind blowing dark garden. the staffs were trying hard but overall lack of money to make things to work.

Stayed at the hotel at the beginning and end of time in CR. Paid for breakfast twice and didn't get breakfast either time. First time it was because there was only two of us in the hotel so they decided to do breakfast 7-8 but didn't tell anyone. Second time I was told they couldn't cater for an early check out, not even a bread roll. The photos on the internet are much nicer than the place which is quite run down and bathrooms really need some work.
Area is great to walk in to town for the day time though and has plenty of restaurants around it for the evening. WiFi is ok.
Noise from closing gate and local train was annoying.

The room was very dirty upon arrival. There foot marks all over the bathroom floors. There are also dirty marks on the wall as well. The sink doesn’t drain properly, you have to keep lifting up the plug to drain the water. What I like about the place is the garden.

I stayed here for four nights & would sum up my stay as ‘barely adequate’. It is extremely loud, due to nearby bars, traffic, and flocks of noisy birds, making sleeping difficult. The mattress felt like sleeping on a sack of cement & the breakfast was basic. Finally, the staff was not friendly or particularly helpful. When I asked for an iron, the receptionist gave me one that was obviously broken. Stay elsewhere.

I highly recommend this property to those who want an authentic experience. If you expect luxury, this is not the place for you. If you want to experience \"ordinary\" culture and typical Costa Rican lifestyle, i believe this is a great choice.

Great Staff - Needs a little TLC!

Everyone on the staff was super nice and friendly. The hotel is outdated and on a scale of 1 to 10 cleanliness is about a 5. They did have a good breakfast that was included. However is you get a room in the front of the hotel, you can expect it to be loud.

Rooms are dated, bathroom not clean, walls full of stains. I even found some dry and old contact lenses in the nightstand. Bed is definitely not comfortable. Coffee was good and the location is convenient. Will never stay there again.

Poco personal. Desayuno deficiente: el pinto duro, el huevo salado, hay pocas opciones, mi hijo màs pequeño no desayunó porque no había cereal. El precio bien con respecto a la habitación de buen tamaño y el baño es grande, pero la tasa del baño era muy vieja, con òxido, incluso en el piso habìa manchas de òxido y la tapa de la tasa es de otro color que a la vista no es agradable. El ventilador de techo hacìa mucho ruido. El minibar tambièn era viejo. Las almohadas pequeñas. El piso de madera hacìa mucho ruido al caminar sobre èl. El personal muy servicial, el gerente preocupado por nuestra estadìa para mejorar en el futuro, lo cual se le agradece.

We booked a room at the last minute and got a very low rate for our room. The staff was very helpful and responsive. The experience felt like it was a place in need of a renovation, but it was serviceable and clean enough. After exploring the city and looking at comparable places to stay for reference, it was worth every penny. It is not the Ritz, but it has the essentials.

It was bad! It used to be a beautiful place years ago. Not anymore. Landscape is not taking care of. I got mosquito bites. There were spider webs in my room and I saw one🕸️on the shower towels. Service was poor. I tried to get another room and was told the hotel was full which I didn’t believe. It looked empty instead. Their policy won’t accept cancellations so you will loose your money. Staff was ok. Not so welcoming and accommodating. The bathroom smelled bad. Water didn’t drain well in the shower. The toilet had a brown stain. It looked gross and dirty. The wood floors made a creaking noise when you walk around the room. I stayed there for two nights and couldn’t wait to get out of there! Do not stayed at this place and save yourself a terrible experience!

I like the layout- it’s unique in that the doors to the rooms are not facing each other.

For a one night cheaper stay in San Jose, it is a nice enough hotel. The location is good, next door to a Starbucks (for the real stuff you have to go to a plantation), there is a grocery store (Auto Mercado), and a few restaurants, all within walking distance.

Had a great experience. The room and bathroom were great, and I had a private enclave out the back door. Which was really great.
I was able to walk to the museums and downtown stores easily from here.
My only negative was that there was accumulated dust on one of the bedside tables, I didn’t mind it, but it would have bugged some people.

We stayed here 6 or 7 years ago. We loved the location and service at that time.

We were disappointed in this stay. The hotel does not appear to have kept up it’s maintenance. Our room was musty and had mold in the bathroom. The staff were not nearly as welcoming or helpful as last time.
The breakfast was not as good as last time too. We will be looking for a different place to stay, next time we are in San Jose.

I believe I reserved one of their best rooms. It was decent. There was a very nice small balcony with a nice view. It had not been cleaned well in quite some time. The free breakfast was very good. Here is the reason that I would never return to this hotel. There is a front gate that is always locked. Guests do not have a key. They rely on a staff member to open and close it. At best you have to wait several minutes for someone to answer a bell and allow you to enter. We were told we had to return by midnight to gain entrance to our room. Midnight curfew like we were in high school. But more importantly there is no obvious second means of egress in case of a fire. If the surly young man who opens and closes the door at night is incapacitated you would be trapped inside the hotel.

The hotel is nice, well kept, surrounded by plant life. The hotel, unfortunate for them, had very few guests. They have a nice dining room, but at this time do not serve dinner. The room I chose had a little patio attached to the room. There was very little traffic noise while sitting on the patio. The room was spotless, nice, and comfortable. The only issue was that because they are a small hotel the entrance is locked and the staff has to be handy to open the door. The same with parking, the small lot is gated and the staff needed to open it. This was kind of an issue, as my girlfriend got an emergency call and had to leave around midnight, and it took awhile for the attendant to wake up and come out to open the parking gate. There are several restaurant/bars within walking distance, and the San Pedro mall is about 3/4 mile away. We liked the hotel and will stay there again.

The Hotel is in a nice location. The free parking is secure and the grounds of the hotel are very nice. The staff was friendly the first night and next morning the made to order breakfast was very nice. The second night the front desk person was not very helpful. We went out for a drink that night and got back at 11 PM. He was clearly annoyed that he had to let us back onto the property. He was also cold the next morning at breakfast. Although we had new sheets and towels, the bathroom was not thoroughly cleaned.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Hotel Le Bergerac. The room was massive, had a walk in closet, luxurious bathroom and lovely patio. The hotel is a little old but this adds a certain charm. It is impossible to find rooms of this size elsewhere. The room was well ordered and clean but could do with a lick of paint. It is walking distance to Escalante where there are great bars, restaurants and coffee shops. Would recommend.

Alright I’m going to tell you all something— this is simply the best bang for your buck in SJ. Don’t let the no A/C scare you, it’s located where the breeze makes it just as good as any A/C would. The cleaning lady is so nice and does wonders. Got to meet the owner and his son. Watch out the little man has a mean left (cutest kid alive). This place is a gem.

Stayed here for 6 days due to proximity to my daughter and son's universities nearby. Hotel is not necessarily close to downtown, however, if you're in town to see touristy sights... Alicia, who was cook and house keeping, was great. Leo, at the front desk, however, was a reason not to come back to the hotel. Not friendly and when the hotel appeared to be affected by the Coronavirus, as there were no guests, it seems they were trying ways to make money. My daughter visited for breakfast. As she sat down at the table, they brought her a plate, which she ask for nor eat, yet they charged us $5 for it, for a plate of scrambled eggs and rice, and didn't learn about this charge until check out when we were in a hurry. $5 is not a lot, but it was the principal, and Leo become very aggressive and combative about this. If they are so desperate to make $5, imagine what else they are willing to do. Proceed with caution/

There are many wonderful things to share about this hotel, where to begin! We arrived in the evening and were greeting by the front desk staff. After check in, he escorted us to the secure parking lot and helped us back in the car, making sure we had easy access in/out of the lot. The hotel itself is adorable, curated patio gardens and sitting areas with lovely views of the valley. The location was wonderful - one block off the main road, far enough away from downtown San Jose to be quiet, but close enough (for us) to walk, a number of coffee houses, bars, and restaurants nearby. But we didn't go beyond the hotel restaurant as the service and food were exceptional. They make their own pasta in house and it was absolutely fantastic. A wonderful hotel - we felt right at home.

We had a lovely stay at this great location near the Escalante neighborhood that bustles with young people in and out of the brewpubs and restaurants. There is a Fresh Market nearby as well. The attached bar/restaurant was a great place to grab an Imperial beer and watch a soccer match. Also an easy walk to downtown attractions. The staff was so helpful and friendly even helping my husband find his lost sunglasses. An excellent value for the price.

Decent hotel, about a fifteen minute walk from downtown San Jose. There are bars, restaurants, and convenince stores a block or two away; and a Starbucks next door. The rooms are spacious and adequately clean. Some street noise from trucks and buses on the main road a block away. Hotel staff seems accommodating. Breakfast is mediocre. WiFi Internet access is fast.

We chose this hotel the day we landed in CR because it was more convenient to heading out to the Caribbean the following day & it would accommodate our family of 6 in one room. It’s an older but pretty hotel with beautiful grounds. We appreciated the in room coffee maker & enjoyed our coffee on the small balcony. Breakfast offerings are simple & ok, but free with stay so can’t complain there. Nice location in an area with shopping & restaurants you can easily walk to. We felt safe walking around in both day & night.

The hotel was fairly easy to locate and is close to the University of Costa Rica. Not a lot of parking available if you have a rental car. Our room was very spacious. We did have some difficulty with getting hot water for showers. There was not a breakfast included with the room cost, so we thought that we could just stop in at the Starbucks next door in the morning before hitting the road, however the Starbucks was not open early!

Quiet, beautiful hotel

Beautiful hotel with incredibly friendly staff. It's located in a very hip part of San Pedro - on the border of Los Yoses and Barrio Escalante - there's great restaurants/bars. Mike upgraded our room and was attentive to our needs.
Thank you to the entire staff for maintaining such a beautiful hotel.
Will definitely be back soon.

Nice, comfortable hotel in quiet neighborhood west of Downtown San Jose. Comfortable, in a residential area within walking distance of the city, and helpful staff. Well located with a perhaps a dozen varied and good quality restaurants within a couple of blocks. Two grocery stores within easy walk. Great deal overall.

Staff was friendly, hotel was very cute! They gave us a great room with a private balcony with lots of foliage, we got in late around 8pm and front desk staff was still there and dinner went until 930. We were able to wash up before we went down for dinner, didn't feel rushed at all! Food was delicious and staff were great. I would stay here again!

I had a very pleasant stay at Hotel Le bergerac. Very friendly staff. It is located in a safe, quiet neighborhood. It isn't in a busy area, but, a short car ride to museums, multi-plazas and Veritas University.

I have stayed at this hotel before and liked it. There were a few changes since I last stayed here due to a change of owner. I was disappointed to find that the restaurant and bar, which has a nice interior patio, was closed except for breakfasts. But I was told that this was temporary, as the new owners had to get new permits and that this would take a couple of months. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. I had a very nice large room with wooden floors and a small private patio. Although it was not air conditioned, it had a fan and was very comfortable even on hot days. The wifi connection was very slow and a bit frustrating, and the phone in the room did not work (but who needs that these days). Over all ok. The key for me was the wifi. I hope they improve that. A coffee/tea maker in the room would also be nice.

Almost a win.

I really wanted to like this hotel. The location seems good, the price is reasonable, but I can't get past three big things. One, the room door was loose in the jamb and would knock throughout the night and day if there was any wind. Two, the trains run just a block away and lay on the horn as they enter the roadway starting around four in the morning. Three, the food service was super disappointing. Assuming you get service, the breakfast options are Gallo Pinto, omelette, or pancakes. I ordered an omelette once. It was sadder than something you'd get at a motel 6 buffet. It really just scrambled eggs loosely wrapped around some chopped tomatoes and onions. If there was any cheese, I couldn't taste it. The hostess poured one cup of coffee and never came back. Nowhere was there self serve coffee, either. The omelette was served with dry white toast, no spreads available. The Gallo Pinto was marvelous. Order that. I wanted to try other meals that they advertised, but I never saw the dining room open past breakfast. My room had a \"patio\" that was almost nice if it weren't for the fact that a ten foot cement wall was six feet from the French doors. All in all, it could be a very relaxing urban hotel for a couple that has no intention of eating in. The rooms are spacious and beautiful, but the amenities are very much lacking.

Basic but all you need

I had a late check in, and the night reception staff was humorous and welcome, quite appreciated after a long journey!

The breakfast was simple but satisfying. The rooms were clean and comfortable, though a bit dated.

The hotel is easy walking distance to bars and nightlife.

Beautiful old hotel. Great staff. However this hotel needs updating. Frayed edges on the sheets and pillowcases..... little ant clusters in bathroom....no flushing of toilet paper down toilet.....open wastebasket for toilet paper...

Outside tropical gardens and flowers were nice. Although there is no AC, the abundant plants and ceiling fan never made you miss not having AC.
