Minimal, But Updated and Clean Property

The hotel was clean and staff were friendly. The rooms were updated and well-appointed. There is no lift so keep that in mind if you have a lot of luggage. Shared bathrooms were clean and we generally didn't have any problems having access to them (did have to go to a bathroom on a different floor once or twice). We would stay again.

Would have been good to have kettle and tea making facilities in the room but there was a hot water dispenser in the reception (which I didn't use).

The hotel is in a handy location.
There's on-street parking about an 8 minute walk away for €5 per day (if you're unable to reserve a free hotel spot, Clever Str is an almost straight walk to the hotel, only turning onto the hotel street). Central station and the cathedral are only a few minutes away also.

Everything was clean, the breakfast was a decent, continental style selection (and a pain au chocolate for later) and the staff are helpful and can keep your room key behind the desk while you are out.

The biggest grumble was having a shared bathroom - 1 or 2 per floor. It wasn't a huge deal, but if someone is using the toilet or showering, you have to go to other floors.

But as a stop off and resting point, it was great. We were there to see the city, didn't need the hotel to have anything too special.

The hotel was very nice inside, and the staff was helpful and kind. There's no elevator, so be prepared to carry your bags up some stairs. The street outside got a little loud in the morning, but was not bad overnight. Convenient location right near the train station!

For a quick one nite stay it’s ok. Front desk said free parking was supposed to be reserved in advance - which I didn’t but they still allowed me to park free. The hotels.com app doesn’t mention such - I think.
Street noise was a little loud but for the price not a bad quick stay.

Good location but service could be better

The hotel is in a good location and also serves a great breakfast. However, service is lacking. I was told I should how booked or reserved a parking space earlier even though there were spots available. It also seemed to be a big deal for them to store some cheese in their kitchens fridge (the rooms do not have fridges). I was told that next time I should bring my own container. Nice building, a bit noisy outside in the street and good location. A little more service and friendliness would make this place even better.

An excellent location that is less than 5 minutes from the Cologne Central Train Station (Koln HBF) should you need to catch early trains to the airport or other German cities. Was excellent value. Rooms were reasonably basic with common shared toilets and showers. The included buffet breakfast in the price was excellent. Nice family run place with friendly service.

Convenient location close to the train station. Short walk to the cathedral and 15-20 minutes to the Chocolate factory. The staff spoke really good English and the service was phenomenal. Small rooms but very clean and tidy. Good breakfast in the morning with very hot coffee. Absolutely recommend if you’re just looking for a place to sleep at a great price! They were also nice enough to hold our bags after our checkout time so we could explore the city without luggage.

Heart of the City Location

Location is great with about a five minute walk to the Cologne Cathedral. The staff was extremely helpful with directions and nearby places to eat. The room was a double with private bathroom. Many of the rooms in this hotel are shared bathrooms which are a less expensive option for those who don't mind that situation. The room had a slight order still lingering from what appeared to be a recent repainting. The breakfast was a typical German offering and was generous in portions.

I never leave reviews, but I am doing so now as this was the worst place I have ever stayed with very poor customer service.

I emailed the hotel on the 29th of August after booking a room to request parking for my car for my stay on the 9th of September. I only received an email back today, the 12th of September.

On the website it says that there is parking available. When I arrived at the hotel, I enquired about the parking and was told to just park it on the street out front but that I could get a penalty. The guy that checked me in was completely unhelpful. I asked if there was a way of paying for parking if they didn't have parking available. He said no. I asked where I could park my car and not get a fine, he told me just to drive around until I could find paid parking. It was obvious that I didn't speak German, and he was very unwilling to give me any information on where I could park, despite the fact that the website clearly said parking was available. He told me that parking was free on the street after 6PM. It was 3PM when I arrived and he said I could just chance it and I probably wouldn't get a ticket. I guess I shouldn't have listened to him because it was clear that he couldn't be bothered to help me because I did get a ticket. Thanks for that! Guess I should blame myself really for not trying to find another solution in a foreign country in a language I don't speak.

Unfortunately, this wasn't the only negative experience I had but I am unable to write more.

Super budget hotel

Situated in a quiet street a short walk from the main railway station. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. The rate I was offered included a buffet breakfast, and a room with a toilet and shower which I thought was great value. The room was spacious for a single with a more than adequate wardrobe, table and chair, and television. The room was very clean and serviced every day. The only negatives were the weak wi-fi signal, the smell of cigarette smoke in the corridors and the view from the room window, but for the price and service offered, I would recommend this hotel and would stay there again.

Non-smoking rooms are non existent

I booked this hotel according to recent reviews and I was terribly disappointed. The hotel is very dark with no natural light entering the building. The first thing I noticed was the smell of smoke at the reception. I booked non-smoking rooms but they are non-existent as the smell of smoke permeated everything.
This must not be a popular hotel as there was dust on the bedcovers and in the bathroom vent.
On the positive side, the hotel staff were very pleasant and helpful and the breakfast was plentiful and had something for everyone. I would not return though nor recommend this hotel.

Checked in late and everything was fine.
The hotel was clean and comfortable for the price. It is located reasonably close to the main train station (about a 10 min walk). The gentleman at the reception was very friendly and helpful with directions. Breakfast, although the only heated item was a boiled egg there was a full spread to cold meats, breads and orange juice etc, the utensils and area around the food was perfectly clean so altogether an excellent start to the day.
Downside: My room was three floors up and with no lift some may struggle with heavy luggage (I was OK). Although my room had a shower and wash hand basin the toilet was shared separate one. (Again I already new this from my booking and that was fine)

the hotel has a perfect location, is so near to the train station, which I can't believe it when I reach there! Location was also the only reason I booked for this hotel. Base on the rating here is 4 out of 5. But I don't know how it gets this, coz the room is ok, but no AC there, the toilet is so so small, and the sink there is very tiny which u can only wash your hands there and never think about try to wash your face and brush your teeth there. The wifi is totally not working in my room, I've try to ask them if they can change another room for me, they said they can't do anything and also said the wifi is not guaranteed inside the room and to suggest me to sit downstairs or in the lobby if I want to use the intetnet! Breakfast is emprresive, wide chioce food for u to choose from and drinks.

A great bargain.

Wasn't sure what to expect from this well rated but inexpensive hotel but I wanted something close to the station for a late arrival. The toilet and shower are down the hall but, that said, this is just a great place. Comfortable room, very helpful and polite English speaking staff, exceeding clean, and a top notch included breakfast. If I get back to cologne I will surely say here again.

Not my first choice

My husband and I just spent a night here. We originally planned and paid to stay for two, but made plans to head to Berlin a day early after being disappointed with our stay in Cologne. This hotel has communal bathrooms (which we were not expecting). So to use the toilet or to shower you must go to one of the communal bathrooms on one of the three floors. Your room is equipped with a sink though. The beds we found to be great uncomfortable. If you need a decent pillow, don't expect one here. You also have to return your room key to the front desk each time you leave the hotel to go sight-seeing. We weren't super comfortable about this so we kept our passports and travel documents on us instead of leaving them in the room. They also require you to sign forms before they will give you the wifi passwords -- which isn't strong enough to stream tv to your laptop. The one decent thing about this hotel is that you get a complimentary breakfast, and that you are a five minute walk from the train. I wouldn't recommend this place to friends. Also if you have a lot of luggage, be prepared to walk it up a number of stairs.

Nothing was to much trouble and found all staff very friendly. Price was a bargain and will be taking my wife there next year for the Xmas market which was also within easy reach. First time I have ever put comment down about a hotel. Very happy to do so.

The hotel is close (easy walking distance) to main railway station however I could not hear any railway noise as it is screened by taller buildings closer to the railway. The staff were very helpful and friendly I was very impressed by the included breakfast which was a feast of good quality food. Bed linen very fresh and good quality. I will certainly return to this hotel next time I visit the wonderful city of Cologne.

My recent stay at the hotel was excellent. As others have said, it has an excellent location and is comfortable in every way. The breakfast is outstanding. It an old-fashioned German hotel with keys with a big weight so you hand it in upon leaving; a nice old and personal tradition as is always including breakfast each morning! Also rooms with sinks but without toilet and shower is still a great way to save money in Europe. These facilities were located directly in the same hallway and were easy, clean and no hassle to use. Danke.

I stayed for a night at the hotel on my way from germany to Brussels. The hotel is close to Cologne station which is a plus however, I didnt find neighbourhood well. It was quite dark and silent. Hotel is equipped with basic facilities however, they couldnt arrange an iron board for me (which they claim they have). No tea, coffee, water cups in the room. Nothing wrong with bed, room or toilets, Given the price, I think there are better hotels in the area.

No elevator,you have to drag your luggage up

If you have any big luggage It is better not to book this hotel as they do not have elevator and you have to drag your luggage up a few floors while staff will not offer any help. The lady that owns the hotel and works in the morning is not friendly and has attitude toward guests but other staff are ok. Breakfast is fine. It took us a while to find the hotel as there is no sign toward hotel (although the hotel is not too far from main train station).

Top tips when staying at the Brandenburger Hof: Great location, a short 4-5 minute walk from the Cologne Hauptbahnhof. Nice reception staff, and very good breakfast (served from 7-10am). No elevators. Many rooms do not have a full bathroom-- sink only. So you must share a bathroom down the hall. Feels like being in a college dorm room. Some of the rooms are extremely small, the size of a jail cell. Only big complaint: They do NOT like accepting credit cards! On one stay, they pretended the machine didn't work. On the second, they flat out told me \"no credit cards.\" Just tell them \"OK, I will come back tomorrow with some cash.\" Credit card suddenly accepted. I've stayed at hundreds of hotels in cities around the world, and this is the first that has ever had a no-credit-card policy.

Great Location, Great Breakfast

This hotel is less than two blocks from the Central Railroad Station. That means it is within easy walking distance of most things a tourist would want to see, as the cathedral is just across from the station, and several museums and the philharmonic are just beyond the cathedral. -- The breakfast spread is high quality, offers lots of variety, and is more than plentiful. The breakfast room is light and pleasant. -- Last but not least, the staff is extremely helpful and friendly, and excellent in their English.

This was a lovely little hotel run by a charming family. It was conveniently located only about three blocks from the train station. The entire facility was immaculate. My room was basic, but the bed was comfortable and the linens were exceptional. Again, everything was so clean and neat. The breakfast buffet was outstanding. However, the best aspect was the friendliness and helpfulness of the delightful couple that runs the establishment. They are truly interested in their guests, and go out of their way to make you feel at home. In all, a very pleasant experience, indeed.

I will never book a room w/o a bath again. This hotel claimed to be totally non-smoking but in the AM the hallways reeked of cigarette smoke. Aparently someone on the kitchen staff soked while they were preparing breakfast. It's hard to deal with when you have asthma.

At the rear there is a small quiet courtyard with tables at which you can read, do work (WiFi is OK) or eat.

Will stay again if I am in Cologne.

Bear in mind (1) no lift, (2) no air conditioning.

only for location, too noisy to sleep

the staff is nice, however the shared toilet and shower room is so so tiny, and the shared toilet smelled, ( which is not surprise in locating in a closed cupboard!)
the room i got facing the small back street, so it is very noisy in the late night while the staff finished their work from the nearby hotels and getting very noisy very very early in the morning, while the near-by hostels started to receive their supplies.
the location is very close to the train station, but given the price, there are plenty of other options around

It is a little loud late coming from the street. It is very close to the Dom. It looks like it's run by the owners. they were very nice to us, they even bought us breakfast to go since we had to leave early in the morning before they officially served it.

perfect stay and excellent service

This well located hotel (3 min walk from Koln station) was in a quiet spot a couple of streets up from the river and an easy walk to sights. Service was excellent - the hosts clearly love what they do and breakfast very good. would stay again.

Very good budget hotel

Very good budget hotel, close to all types of transport and easy to find. Slight noise from the train station but bearable. Nice breakfast. Friendly and helpful staff. The room 11 had a very slight smell of stale smoke when you first walked in but after being in the room for a bit you couldn't smell it anymore.

The hotel is situated real close to the centralstation which is a big plus since we arrived late in the evening. Luckily we got a room where it was forbidden to smoke. Previously we had received a room by mistake, which was filled with smoke-odeur, which is not that nice for non-smokers. The service was really good.

great staff. great location. very quiet spot. good value breakfast. must book parking spot before.

The staff were very friendly and spoke very good english. A very good loction to explore the city as only 5 min walk from the cathedral, and main train station. It was very quiet and easy to find. Breakfast was good value as it was all that you can eat . if you are driving thay do have limited parking so book it before you go. dont expect luxuary as the rooms are not big but are very clean and comfortable. There are no tea or coffee facilities in the room and they dont like credit card but it is well worth going.
