Amazibg staff. Antonio was a great help with many things. Upgrade to a suite was a little extra well spent. Only gripe was no food available - restaurant, cafeteria or room service from 1600 to 2030. Hopeless for pilgrims. Not good enough for international hotel. Otherwise 3 day stay wonderful

Antonio at reception was wonderful. Arranged an upgrade to a suite for a reasonable additional amount. Helped us with a number of issues and requirements. Just exceptionsl. Room was just fabulous. BIG issue is that between 4pm to 8.30pm there is no food available by room service, in the cafe/bar or in the restaurant. This is not good enough for a 4 star (international) hotel and particularly for Camino pilgrims that want to eat much earlier than this. But the hotel was great.

I like the location.
I didn’t like the check in one bit. It got me off to a very poor start in the Alfonso. I have stayed in this hotel 9 times now. I booked the hotel in MY name, I am the person who paid the bill. At the reception at check in my partner gave his name in error and the woman on reception proceeded to book the reservation under his name despite me telling her twice that the booking was in MY name. She said it was not a problem but should have seen clearly that it was for me. I am 62 years old and have never been dismissed and disguarded in this way in my entire life. When I was younger I would have dealt with this snub more forcefully.
Some people don’t complain they just don’t come back!

Perfect stopover on the Camino

Stayed here the night before starting our Camino experience. It was perfect for our needs. Felt a little soul-less but otherwise very good. Bedrooms were comfortable with lots of accessories provided including razors and toothbrush sets!

Matrimonal beds

This hotel is old but well maintained with lovely furnishings. We booked a room with a double bed, but in Spanish it has to be a \"matrimonial\" bed. When we got there, there were no such rooms available, only with twin beds - apparently, only 3 of thekr 60 rooms have proper double beds. The very helpful staff offered us a generous discount on the suite, so we ended up having a great stay.

Mr Garcia helped me with a double reservation that I made. He also helped me with my iPhone charger when I had forgotten my iPhone charger in Madrid. My iPhone battery was at 1 percent when Mr Garcia said he could help.

Really nice hotel on Camino in Sarria. Great location and very nice hotel. Note that this is a large hotel — more like a full size property than one might expect on the Camino but room was great, as was the location. Nice dining room with reasonably priced tourist menu.

Excellent position for starting the Camino from Sarria. Don't be put off by the external dodgy orange letters spelling out HOTEL ALFONSO IX because inside this hotel it is fantastic - definitely not a 3 Star, in my opinion 4 star plus.

Hotel ok but beds so hard we woke up in pain!

The hotel is big clean and close to the Camino. The room was clean and looked fine if a little bland.
The bed was so hard we were both in pain the next day- we have been staying in albergue for €6-10 a night with more comfortable beds than these!!
The funfair next door going on till the very early hours- past 1am with klaxons, voices and music just loud enough to disturb didn't help. We'd hoped for a good nights sleep before carrying on with our Camino journey but it wasn't to be!!

Great starting point for the El Camino

This hotel is well placed for minimum distant to start the El Camino. I started the El Camino from this hotel, and parked my car within the hotel. After the pilgrimage, it was easy to get a bus or train back to Sarria and pick-up the car.

The staff is very friendly, and the rooms are good for the price.

We enjoyed the hotel overall. There was an issue with the internet (it did not work) and when I called down to check the lady rudely told me it was my phone. I told her I tried on multiple devises and she just kept insisting it was mine. Finally she admitted it was not working. I asked for either a discount or free breakfast buffet for the inconvenience, and she told me I could have coffee and bread, but only for one person. She was very rude.

Besides the rude front desk staff, the room was nice with a comfortable bed and nice bathroom.

Perfect start to the Camino

Sarria was our starting point for the Camino de Santiago, and the Alfonso IX was perfect. It was a short walk from the bus station (after overnight flight into Madrid and an all-day bus ride to Sarria). Dinner was gracious, beds were comfortable, shower was strong and hot, staff spoke great English. Buffet breakfast on Saturday was good. The hotel is a block from the Camino. GREAT experience!
