Poor value for money for overnight star and dining

We choose this hotel as a treat on our stay but it was a huge disappointment. The condition of the rooms is not as shown in the pictures. Overall, the biggest minus was really the price. Everything in Myanmar is rather cheap but this hotel was more expensive than a 5 star luxury hotel in Yangon. Thus, we expected it to be of same standard but it turned out to be a complete rip off! The rooms itself were alright but buying anything at the hotel was approximately 10 times more expensive than buying it at any restaurant in the area. Views are beautiful and the pool area was as well so overall our review is based on very poor value for money

Loved the fact it was a private chalet (although attached to another) and spacious with an amazing view from the pool of the Irrawady river. Breakfast was good too.

Could have done with a mosquito net over the bed and for some reason the air con in our room was nowhere near the bed.

The Only Place To Consider Staying In Bagan

This is the best place to stay RIGHT on the river. The restaurants and bar over looks the pool and to to river looking west. Which meant the most amazing sunsets in the evening. Together with the 2 hr happy happy made a perfect evening followed by dinner. The tomato and peanut Burmese salad was great!
We stayed in a deluxe river view room
And worth the extra to stay there. The staff were always super friendly and only too happy to help with anything. They had their own ebikes to hire which is the best way to see and get around the many temples. As the resort is off the roads you don’t hear traffic and that ever present horn honking all the drivers do!!
If I was to go back to Bagan again this is where I would stay again. Really consider this place to base yourself as you explore Bagan - oh and make sure you book a hot air balloon ride. That was stunning and breath takingly beautiful!!

Great hotel in a beautiful city

We loved Bagan. Hotels are limited so this one is out of the way but it was in a beautiful setting, clean, nice staff, great pool and overall great place to stay.

Great view, room dated and breakfast is disapointi

Hotel has a great view, very nice pool and the staff is very friendly. Breakfast is very basic and dishes tasteless and not limited choice, had some Croissants that had mold inside. Aircon in the assigned room did not work and needed repair, it took the team about and our to try to fix it with no luck and i then requested to move to another room.This could have been offered earlier as we traveled as a family and our child needed to sleep. Over all nice hotel but rooms are a bit dated.

It is a bit remote and nowhere near any restaurants for the evenings. Taxis are not easy to get and the hotel wants $15 everytime you wish to go out if not more. Spa/shop and restaurant are all expensive in comparison with outside.
The hotel arranged a first class guide for us - Han was excellent. Also make sure you ask for a room overlooking the river - it is lovely. The pool area is nice but the sunbed cushions need replacing.
Apart from that the place is a little bit of heaven!

Beautiful garden and pool, the 10 minutes massage wasn't great, only 5 mins. The courtesy car was quite expensive compared to the local taxi.the restaurant food was delicious and the staff brilliant, everyone was friendly and approachable.. the ebikes were great and not expensive

Great location and amazingly helpful staff

This is a lovely hotel set in gardens on the riverbank. I booked a standard room which turned out to be a suite with its own sun-terrace. Good food at reasonable prices - but what really stood out was on my final night I had an email from my airline changing my flight times and the new times gave me a huge problem. The travel agent couldn’t do anything - but when I told reception (at 7pm) they had an alternative flight fixed within 15 minutes and the ticket was delivered to the hotel within an hour for a flight at 11am the next morning. The a couldn’t have been more helpful and I really appreciated it. Thank you!!

Great pool, so so room, overpriced food and drink.

We stayed here 4 nights in January. We booked this hotel specifically because it had a nice pool area where we could lounge in the heat of the day. Pool area is very nice as is the pool and it has great views across the river. The public areas of the hotel are all in good shape however the “cabins (4-plexes)” were quite dated and this was especially evident in the bathrooms. The service was very good and the staff were very pleasant whenever we dealt with them. The hotel is in walking distance of a good number of temples and you can also rent an e-bike for 5000 @ 4 hrs.

Although the hotel was convenient for the temples there was nowhere else to eat within walking distance. We had dinner at the hotel the first night and were very disappointed with the quality and quantity relative to the price. ($16 for a chicken leg and a few vegetables, no rice, potato, bread or anything. We never had dinner there again but did order off the bar menu which is more reasonable.
You can catch a taxi or horse buggy to the Hotel at Tharabar Gate for about 4,000 one way. Fairer prices, larger menu and much better food.
The other issue is the hotel is a bit remote and you need a taxi to go anywhere. Taxis don’t hang out at the hotel and the hotel won’t call one for you, you have to use the hotel taxi which is 2+ times the normal rate.

We ran across The Tharabar Gate hotel for dinner & what a difference- wished we had stayed there.

A lovely sanctuary with simple rooms.

This spot was a last minute selection. We wanted great AC since it was blisteringly hot in Bagan. The room AC was great, but there were no other air conditioned spaces. The open air restaurant was too steamy for a pleasant dinner. Breakfast was very good, but the slightly cooler morning air temperature made for a better open air dining experience. We did not find see a restaurant with AC in Bagan, so we assume this was very typical of the area. The location is magnificent. The pool beside the Irawaddy River was also very attractive.

Nice resort with unreasonably high extra prices

We really did enjoy our stay at this place, but I found the cost of extras rather high and some just didn't feel right. We stayed in a very nice river suite with our 7 year old son. The hotel wanted to charge $120 a night for a roll in bed for him. Now, a regular room at the resort was about $95 a night, which included breakfast for 2 people. We ended up bringing a blow up bed for him simply because that cost annoyed me. I am really not cheap, but this was just a very disproportional charge. Sodas. like Coke Zero were $4 at the bar; not outrageous but rather high for Myanmar. For example a Coke Zero is $3 at The Strand in Yangon. The food was reasonable (and you certainly have a great river view at dinner), but again rather expensive for what it was. SPA prices were high (for Myanmar and what it was) as well. Pretty decent internet.
We tip fairly well, and after the first 2 days, the experience was better. For example they had $7 nuts at the bar; which I would never order. But by day 3, they just kept giving us those for free; they didn't charge for the 7 year old sons breakfast after the 2nd day onwards. While making me sign the $10 breakfast charge for him the moment we got to breakfast on the 1st two mornings. Anyhow, I would stay there again; but some of the extras are priced unreasonably.

+: Rooms are simple but comfortable, staff is adorable and efficient, swimming pool and garden are gorgeous, food was good, they lend me a charger for Ipad as I forgot mine.

-: breakfast was average, spa was disappointing (expensive poor massage that lasted 45 minutes instead of an hour), overall the hotel is overpriced (food, room, activities offered and shop!). I got an offer for 80 USD/night for a garden bungalow and that was acceptable. The usual rate is exaggerated but that's Old Bagan, be ready to pay more than what you should.

The resort is Located very far from everything, but it is suitated by a Lake with a gorgeous view. The breakfast buffet was nice and premises was nice. Excellent Hotel For Rest & Relaxation

This hotel was the perfect place to stay in after exploring the ancient sites & history of Bagan. It was a welcoming place to get rest & relaxation. Their location enhances a peaceful & secluded environment. The grounds are well groomed and beautiful. The rooms were great. The bed was average. Restaurant was adequate and buffet breakfast was pretty good. The front desk was extremely helpful, and will help you arrange rides or whatever you need. You can rent bicycles or electric mopeds to go exploring. I loved the pool with the view of the river and mountains. The hotel is very close to the ruins, so great place to base yourself to go exploring. I highly recommend this hotel!

The river view from the pool is beautiful. Nice swimming pool. The hotel is old and its facilities could use a major upgrade. The breakfast, part of the package, is of cafeteria quality and the capuccino, weak on the coffee, costs an extra US$ 4 each. Passable experience.

Room was large and comfortable. But food in restaurant Was basic, service slow and staff clueless. one expects more from a pricey hotel. Concierge staff was un-informed and unhelpful.
Breakfast buffet was unimaginative and barely acceptable.
This is not a high quality boutique hotel. Dont go there if that is what you are looking for. Lots of tour groups.

Wonderful and relaxing

I loved my stay here. It was relaxing and the staff was great and smiling. The rooms were big and the beds comfortable. Hot water available in the showers and they were separate from the toilet.

The temples are very near but would recommend a bike rental ($5 for four hours / $8 for eight hours). Not sure how much the motor bikes were but were available too.

The pool was clean and big, but depth only reached about 5 ft. no diving.

The restaurant at the hotel was the closest for food, serving both Asian and Western styles. It was expensive though for okay to good food. Starters would cost about $5-$7 for soup or salad. $8 for main course for lunch and about $18 for dinner. I recommend the Fisherman's Plate. $5 for custom fruit juices, delicious but a little expensive.

Overall a great stay and would stay here again.

We had a great few days here in May, low season. The grounds are beautiful, the rooms are great and the staff are excellent, especially the concierge at guest relations desk.

I'd recommend eating in town though as the restaurant and bar are US and Europe prices, maybe even more expensive. In town you eat amazing food for 1/3 the price.

My solo Bagan trip

Although I only stayed for 1 night, my experience with the hotel was a good one.
Staff are very well versed in English, providing a smooth conversation for tourist coming to Bagan.

Room is big and good enough for a normal stay.
Breakfast is ok
Arrangement of transportation timing is spot on by the hotel.
I requested for transport arrangement to Shwesandaw (Very near hotel) to take sunset and sunrise pictures and the timing they got me there was spot on.
*A must try is the clear prawn soup from the restaurant.

So much potential. But poor rooms!

So much potential. Great location but rooms in desperate need for an internal refubishment. There needs to be attention to cleanliness in the rooms too. Cleaning corners of rooms are crucial.

The pool and the gardens are fabulous.

Food in the restaurant was very very expensive;$18 dollars for a local curry plus 15%in taxes. No vegetarian offerings either.

An oasis I'll never forget

This is an amazing hotel far away from the city and in the middle of ancient temples and stupas, alongside river with a nice view of mountains and spectacular sunsets. The temples are walking distance, or for a fee the hotel has bicycles. No need of taxi to get from one temple to another, everything is in close proximity from the hotel. This hotel is all about taking it slow and enjoying nature and history.

Good rooms, restaurant and drinks overpriced

This hotel's location was great for exploring the sites of Bagan. It has it’s own drive down to the river and the watching the sunset over the river with the mountains was a great start to our trip. The room with garden view that we booked (£46.99/ Night) was of an excellent size with excellent bathroom and shower facilities providing the full scope of water temperatures. Towels, toiletries etc were all included. A/C worked fine and reasonable volume, though it did cut out once during an electrical storm, but I guess that’s fair! The staff and service was excellent, but we thought that the restaurant and drinks were overpriced, compared to other hotels we stayed at in similar price brackets across Myanmar. Also it is worth pointing out that the hotel was quite a long way from any other bars or restaurant, so either bike hire was required or you had to make do with the prices.

sub-standard rooms for price

The 'resort' itself is lovely - but I was very disappointed with the room I was given especially at A$365 for 2 nights. Felt like being at boarding school: two blocks of 60's styled accommodation, small windows, daggy curtains, overlooking 'garden' /scrub-land. These sleeping blocks, where it seems Balloons over Bagan Pilots stay are quite a walk from reception, amenities,pool, river view [stunning in evenings]. I walk lots so no problem with that so much as not really worth it to sleep in shut-in twin bedded room. Why can't a single person get a double/queen bed?? I learnt that standard room in nearby hotel, also great amenities, were $100. Try a villa at US$500 a night. Note I stayed at Innwar with first two nights, $70 a night, lovely beds and bedding linen.

Hotel is at a good location for sightseeing and the hotel itself has an amazing water view. Resort is very relaxing and kept clean. Toiletries are great with plenty of hot water and good shower water pressure. The negatives are mainly the price and the slow F&B service. The hotel rate is already high compared to other hotels in Bagan, but the food and drink prices were high compared to most places in Asia. Furthermore, the taste is average and the cocktails took forever to be served. I would recommend staying at the hotel, but perhaps find restaurants outside to eat at.

After 2 days in Yangon, arriving at Bagan Thiripyitsaya Sanctuary Resort was like arriving at an oasis. The setting by the river is gorgeous and its proximity to the highlights of the Bagan plain is priceless. We rented bikes and set off from here to explore the nearby temples everyday for about a week. We stayed in one of the bungalows with a view of the river and gardens. The amenities were excellent. The hotel was very quiet even though the high season had already started. They seem to get busloads of overnighters, but I saw very few people who stayed as long as we had. The pool never got busy while we were there. Breakfast was so-so but it was free and there was a good selection for the guests - both western and Burmese options. The dining and bar were passable but we found better restaurants in the nearby towns.

Special praise for the very attentive staff who seemd genuinely pleased to make your stay exceptional. Only ate once at the restaurant, felt a little disappointed with the meal for the price, but this wouldn't put me off staying there again.

The hotel is well laid out, with great facilities. The pool is especially lovely, but more sun loungers are needed.
The Reception staff were rather disappointing, despite a request to be next to my children our cottages were blocks a part. Small inconveniences, such as ordering a taxi 45 minutes ahead of time, but being asked an inane question when we turned up for it rather than phone our room, so we had to wait around for one despite planning ahead- were too frequent & somewhat annoying.
As a family we love massages, but would rate our experience very low. I was left with 5 or 6 bruises & we were charged more than the $60 quoted per person.
If in a group, be prepared to get your meals at staggered times and after a long wait. Meals are expensive compared to comparable hotels in the country.
Our Xmas dinner was poor value; the entertainment was substandard and our meal of turkey with rice & curry was expensive - especially as the drinks menu was prepared especially for the evening with highly inflated prices.

A lovely place to stay, but a little far from town

We really enjoyed our stay here! We had a river view room the first two nights (it was fine, but a garden view room is a better value) and then upgraded to the River Suite room the last night. Since we were spending most of our last day at the hotel, the splurge was definitely worth it. It was a lovely room!

The staff is very helpful and friendly and we took a Burmese Cooking class, which was educational and delicious! The breakfast isn’t so tasty, but it was acceptable.

The hotel is beautiful and spacious but it is far from anything you could walk to. If you want to eat dinner in Old or New Bagan, you need to hire a driver which we did every night. The sunset from the lawn of the hotel is gorgeous -- peaceful and lovely!

Relax in Old Bagan, great service.

Fantastic place for a trip to Bagan. Located in the archeological zone, but on the bank of the Irrawady. Service was beyond fantastic, the staff was super accommodating and went out of their way to help make visiting the area easy and interesting. Watching sunset on the hotel patio was always a pleasure. Don't expect fast wifi, but it's doable for email. Breakfast was completely random in some ways, but you could always get an omelet and fruit. Pool was great, restaurant served decent food.

From the moment we parked at the curb we knew we had walked into paradise. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful and the Irrawaddy River in the background is magical. Our group had two rooms, one with a garden view and one with river. Each had a porch with comfortable lounges to unwind after visiting 1000s of nearby Buddhist temples. The rooms were large, comfortable, and had all the amenities. The breakfast buffet was yummy, the spa facilities were lovely, and the location is in the heart of the archaeological zone. We walked home from Old Bagan after dinner and the staff arranged for us to rent e-bicycles to ride around the temple zone--very fun.

This is a beautiful property with comfortable rooms. Service is impeccable. The staff is quite helpful in making any arrangements you want or need. The proximity to the ruins is great and the was easy getting to outside restaurants.

This was the priciest place we stayed but the treat was with it.

Un lugar encantador lleno de jardines y frente al río, situado en Bagan viejo, dentro de la zona arqueológica. Incluso dentro de la propiedad hay un templo. Tiene un restaurante muy bien asistido con buena cuchara. El desayuno estuvo bien. La atención del lobby fue excelente, gentiles y colaboradores. ホテルとってもきれいでした！マッサージも割とお得なお値段で受けれます。衛生面、Wifi気になるところなし。e-bikeもホテルでレンタルできました。(4時間毎1万チャット)帰りが朝早めの飛行機でしたが、朝日のツアーの手配、そのままホテルでドライバーさん待機(その間に朝ごはん)からの急いで空港まで送迎という申し訳ないほどわがままな要望にも対応していただけました。

別世界のバガンです。

土埃の舞う地域から隔絶された別世界と感じました。ホテルの敷地内は、どこを見てもきれいに手入れされた芝生、川からの風、快適に過ごせました。部屋は高床式バンガローです。リバービューの部屋が良いと思います。部屋をでて、すぐに開放感のある風景を観れるからです。部屋は広くありませんが、圧迫感はないので、丁度よい広さだと思います。バスルームも清潔です。部屋全体清潔で、機能的に劣る点は感じませんが、バスタブが狭いとは感じました。ＮＨＫの日本語放送が見れるのと、ミニバーがフリーだった点は、ポイントが高いです。スタッフの方は、片言の日本語を話す方もいて、コミュニケーションはしやすいホテルと思いました。リゾート感のあるホテルですが、朝食は普通です。敷地内には、テンプル遺跡のようなものもあります。敷地内から出るのは大変です。緩い上り坂を５００メートルくらい歩かなければなりません。敷地の外に出ても何もありません。Ｅバイクは４時間５０００Ｋ、８時間１００００Ｋでレンタルできます。このホテルに宿泊するのであれば、ホテルでゆっくりする時間を多めにとる方が良いと思います。
