The rooms are old and tired and the property is falling into disrepair. It’s not possible to justify the prices asked for rooms anymore. Either a big capital injection or lower prices are needed to fix the value equation

The room disappointed me, i expected a lot better for the rating of this hotel. It was very dated, carpet that smells wet, bathroom is clean but looks very dated. Definitely not the best considering i am here for a special birthday weekend. Not a good start. Hopefully the rest of the stay gets better.

The hotel is very nice but a couple of things as a fellow hotelier I’d have a look into
- Dinner service was not organised. Two of us were seated at a table that had only one setting and at no point did anybody bring a second setting before we were served our meal at which point we had to ask for it. We ordered a bottle of red wine that never came.
- At breakfast service on the first morning, we ordered coffees that did not arrive. We had to order them a second time after about 20 minutes of waiting. Overall for FNB service, I would just recommend they write down orders as nobody seemed to do this, in particular food orders.
- The hiking map route is very difficult to follow from the map as it’s without clear instructions
- We wanted to book a spa treatment as we were passing through Reception to head out for the day. We were told we would have to go to the Spa to book a treatment and it could not be done at Reception. It’s not very convenient and we decided not to book.

Horrific and horrible stay

We had a stay out of a horror movie. At first, we had to move rooms because our AC was not working and although our room was nice because it is renovated, our friends’ first room was horrific. The room had mold on hen ceiling, a broken lamp shade and dirt at the bottom of the bed. Our friends came with their baby, and their baby got bitten by insects in the cot, they obviously hadn’t cleaned or disinfected the cot. To add to this horror, our friend got an infection suspected from swimming in the pool, and had to be rushed to the hospital in the midst of the night and got admitted to high care. Our room key stopped working several times, their lines and the WiFi was down a lot during our stay. We would rate this supposedly 5 star hotel, a mere 1 star and heavily advise not to book here. We will never go back, that’s for sure.

Mount Grace review

Mount Grace is set in the beautiful foothills of the Magaliesberg mountains. Our room was clean, but was a bit musty. The bathroom was beautiful. The Spa is lovely and the treatments were wonderful. It was upsetting that the floatation pool was in disrepair - I was particularly looking forward to floating in there. The other facilities were all good. The one Restaurant was undergoing renovations but we made do with only one restaurant. We had a great rest and came home relaxed.

On the first day we got to the hotel, the bathroom toilet had poop stains, and we had to get housekeeping to clean it. There was old soap left in the bathroom from the previouse guest and the old soap reminded in the bathroom the entire lenght of my stay. I arrange for wine to be put into the room and that was never done. Also arrange for a piece of cake to be sent to us after dinner on the last night of our stay because it was my fiance birthday, and this was never done. I call the front desk and laid a complaint and they said the manage will chat to me the next day, that never happend.

Terrible Service from dinning areas. Food for dinner far below what you would expect from a hotel of this statue. Fish Dry and overcooked. Buffer food badly prepared.
Seems to be under staffed and the staff are untrained.

We spent two nights at Mount Grace and honestly, we would have extended our stay if we didn't have plans in Jo'burg the next day. We will definitely return and will spend more than two days there next time

Highlights included:
- our beautiful Deluxe room with porch opening onto a verdant scene with views of the mountain
- the golf carts to transfer my older in-laws around
- all meals. We sampled each of the restaurants, including room service, and all food was excellent
- the walk we took around the property. There are cycling tracks too
- all staff. The service we received from every single person we met was superb
- views from the breakfast room and throughout the property.
- we spent a day at the spa after checking out. All treatments, service and lunch were fantastic. Highly recommend time spent in the floatation pool plus the couples spa package

For the price that I paid I expected better conditions. No air conditioning in the restaurant to eat breakfast and dinner, so you sweated. Air conditioning in the room was broken kept shutting off had to keep waking up in the middle of the night to turn it on. The private pool in the room the water was dirty and not clear so couldn’t see the steps or the bottom to come in and out, the windows and room where dirty, no water or coffee was provided in the room. The spa staff was rude. Safety was a joke had a waitress staff calling the room at 1am asking if we where awake. Not sure why. The property is beautiful, beautiful landscaping but I would not recommend staying here, everything else was terrible. I would stay down the street at black horse.

A very pleasant stay with minor comments

Our stay was very pleasant despite the coldish and wet weather. The Spa treatment was superb (Brenda & Lebo) and we will be back.
Breakfast was a treat but the quality of the two dinners we had could be improved on. The "tomato sauce" of the penne arrabiata was mediocre and I have never paid R105 for a tiny, triangular slice of tiramisu which was definitely not worthy of a 5-star hotel. I mentioned this to the head waitress and she took down our room number but we did not hear anything further.

Mostly pleasant but breakfast service was shocking and unacceptable. Did receive the generic apology though, so suppose one needs to accept that if anything goes wrong or is below standard, there should be an apology to make it all better. Disappointing end to the breakaway although in all fairness to the rest of the service - it did start off really well! Great service from Jane at reception and the various golf cart drivers who were always smiling and super efficient. Host and Chef at breakfast - needs to learn how to cook eggs, listen to an order, and treat all their guests the same!

Lovely hotel the room was beautiful but the service was absolutely dreadful so disappointing. Dirty plates left over from room service were never removed from our room the excuse given was that you needed to request it. When we asked for additional tea bags for a cup of tea in the morning we were told by reception it was not their department. We were seated at a dirty breakfast table. we left a cell phone charger at the hotel by mistake initially it could not be located, when it could be located we were told there is no way it could be sent with someone to head office we could collect it ourselves. we have never seen service quite like it in a hotel of this standard. So sad. Was not a 5 star experience.

Noticed some guests got set up around the pool; was just wondering why we were not asked/notified to be set up likewise?

Saturday morning breakfast - they had no black tea, just all the others?

Kids playing in the warm water pool, where they should have played in the Kids Pool? Was quite disturbing.

Hotel could have circulated a simple form, to provide COVID info and Check-in info??
Like with any online-check-in, 72 hours in advance.
This will substantially shorten the check-in duration and line.

I think Mount Grace has lost its mojo. Yes, it is Covid but a few things are not up to scratch. Breakfast is a nightmare. Our suite (216) needs maintenance and not a single thing done for our 30th wedding anniversary.... like a fruit basket or something. Hotel is still good, but not great

Had a great stay at the hotel. Highlights were the very relaxing massage in the spa and the picnic in the sun beside the water feature. Our room was very spacious and clean. Food at the Twist restaurant was ok, but the amount of choice and quality could definitely be improved. Also, the service is extremely slow, often with only one person serving on the counter causing a long queue (the situation was the same for dinner and breakfast). They have several pools to use, which is great, although I think more effort should be made to try and clear the leaves/twigs from the water.

So disappointed with this resort. It has huge potential and is a lovely getaway but our baby moon was hindered by lack of service, unprofessional staff.. I Could go on.
1. On arrival, our booking was said to be not paid, but was paid via hotels.com...I had to escalate to billy for him to sort out
2. Pool water was not spotless despite being in a villa which for me, should have the highest standards maintained.
3. They didn’t know where our bags were despite leaving it at RECEPTION!!
4. No food menu in the room despite them telling us there was.. the guy had to come to the room to confirm there was no menu
5. Room service took over 45minutes
6. The worst experience was the spa. Excellent massage from Hlezi, WOW. Best part of the trip. But they upset me so much with their lack of consistency on policy... allowing my daughter to use the pools at the spa on Sunday and on the Monday telling me she wasn’t allowed.. and when I asked them to tell my husband, she changed her mind and said it was quiet so my daughter could suddenly swim in the pool. Very unhappy with the lack of consistency in their policy and the manner in which we are addresssed

I love the spa the treatments the staff the rye bread sandwiches were amazing. The floating pool is my only not great experience but thats because there is not enouhh salt and you dont float. I highly recommend spending the day.

The dinner at the Vine i really enjoyed the haloumi salad, and the salmon. The portion size of the risotto is very disappointing as it was 7cm diameter little blob as my main the taste was spectacular though!

My room was fantastic, the pools are so peaceful and the breakfasts were always abundant and tasty!

The place is very nice for a nice, quite, relaxing holiday.
I wish they can buy iron for each room, this calling the house keeping to come collect your clothes, have them iron and wait was not cool.

There are things to do at the Spa, I wish the gentlemen at the reception would have explained all the benefits of the spa area that you can enjoy while you wait for your treatment time. i did not even know there was a restaurant there, only saw on my way out.

The breakfast was lovely and the staff were welcoming.

Electric blankets did not work. One of them sparked at the switch when turned on and tripped the breaker. Room was lovely (147) but so glad we did not have the first one they showed us which was very dark. Only Rambling Vine restaurant open first night which we didn't like much. The spa is great and we used the gym also. Pity the walks have to be fenced off now but this is the country we live in.

A beautiful facility that has everything you would want. Nice touches throughout, great food etc.
However, the service in Twist (Buffet Restaurant) and Spa area could be greatly improved. It was easier to get a fillet steak (fantastic btw!) than glass of water in the former!
Some of the service staff just lacked initiative. If plates or milk/water is running low.... top up! You do not have to wait until it runs out. Also, there's no hot drinks station at the buffet so you're waiting a long time for tea/coffee at Breakfast. The service in Rambling Vine was excellent.
We booked Spa treatments many hours in advance and the masseuse failed to show up, someone else filled in for her 45 mins later. Albeit not a significant sum in the grand scheme, the net effect was lost income. Reason -> we took reduced treatments and did not return to the Spa area.
The men's locker room had garments, towels, slippers and plastic covers littered throughout, while the Men present should know better and place in chest available, the fact a cleaner had just exited and left it in such a state was alarming.
If I owned this place I'd be very annoyed. Its a beautiful facility, everything is provided for, great food, lovely Gym and Spa area..... but a minority of 'service' staff need to perform and this really would be a top destination. Some of the staff were fantastic in fairness. The gin cocktails were Superb as well!
All in all, I'd go back.

1. Reception staff need more training on how to provide 5* service. They seem not to understand that Mount Grace is 5* hotel and one would expect different service from other hotels below this level.
2. Spa treatment should include the floating treatment as part of all packages should not be charged extra. should be treated like the sauna , steaming rooms after purchase of packages.

There was apparently a "save water initiative" in place whereby towels would not be changed if left on the rails. In spite of us leaving our towels on the rails (to save water in washing them) we were given fresh towels after only one day's stay. Staff should be made aware of the initiative and comply with it.

We spent a one night get-away to celebrate a birthday. Hotel staff prepared the room romantically with rose petals, bottle of wine and greeting card. We enjoyed an excellent buffet dinner and buffet breakfast the next morning. Hotel staff were friendly and attentive helping us to take pictures. We loved the natural surroundings and the walk from our room next to the Spa was just right to get a feel of the place without tiring us out (we are over 60).

The service was amazing, all the staff were friendly and helpful at all times. Our whole weekend away was spoilt by noise from the room next door. We came for peace and quiet and to sleep late. We normally get up at 5am. Our neighbors woke us up early( 5:30 am) with their chatting, felt like we were in one apartment and they were in an adjacent room. We could hear them so clearly! I think this is totally unacceptable for a 5 star rating. I would never take the standard/ economy room again but then we probably will never return, as this aspect totally spoilt the weekend. We left early Sunday morning after being woken up again.

The stay was nice and exactly what we needed. I do however want to get the contact details of the hotel manager. The thing that bothered us the most is that no where in the booking information etc. did it state that we had to carry cash on us at all times as the servers required their tips to be in cash. which caused a bit of a problem as they complained that the company takes the tips and they get a portion. It made each and every transaction rather awkward with us having to pay in cash.

Then an incident occurred at our last day where we ordered food for room service the food came but when we requested the bill the server asked again for cash and i confirmed again that i only had a card which meant that i had to pay with a card machine. after numerous follow ups we eventually got the card machine and bill the next day. however after i paid with my card the server came back to us asking me to write down all the digits of my debit card. i denied as this is exactly what happened to me when my card was cloned. The money went out my account and the server returned and again asked for my card number and i refused and he left it at that.

Friendly staff, excellent service but overrated

The service was excellent and the staff were all very friendly - well done! The setting/location is really beautiful and forces you to relax. We had a room with a garden view and although it was comfortable I found it very disappointing due to the noise levels. The walls are paper thin and we could hear everything that was said and done by our neighbours. We had two different couples and the noise levels were the same.You also heard the golf carts passing by the whole time and the cleaning staff early in the mornings. I found the food & drinks expensive. The spa treatments were good but not outstanding and rather expensive in comparison to others spas.

Quick break from hustle and bustle of city life

Still as amazing as it was when I visited last year. Beautiful environment. Great facilities. The staff very well trained and very friendly. Thandi in reception was especially nice and professional. The spa area was the highlight. Great buffet at Twist restaurant and we enjoyed the cocktails.

Very impressed with the hotel. A firm favourite on my list. What made it stand out more was the fact that I had a special occasion planned which was made so much easier as the hotel really went above and beyond all my expectations and made the event even more special. Thank you!

The Hotel and staff were not too bad. Unfortunately other visitors made so much noise and behaved so bad that we will never visit the hotel again or recommend it to friends. This group of noisy visitors came to the breakfast table still drinking bear. I don't understand how the staff allowed them into the breakfast hall with half empty bear bottles.They behaved so badly and were so noisy that we couldn't enjoy our own breakfast and hastily finished our breakfast and left the room.

Overrall not too impressed

The stay was good, I was just not happy that the people at reception did not have the right facts. I had arrange the getaway for my in-laws, which was bed and breakfast and had paid in advance for them to have the buffet dinner every night they stayed. I had told this to my in-laws that dinner was arranged and paid in advance. When they got there they had asked reception about the dinner and they were told, sorry it was only bed and breakfast. My in-laws decided to save costs and went the whole stay at the accommodation without dinner. I knowing that my in-laws would not pay for the additional costs for dinner, that was why I arranged with the hotel and paid in advance for the dinner. This really soured my view of Mount Grace, as they should have known this or noted it. So I would say in overall it was a NOT a good experience thinking that my in-laws did not have dinner the whole 3 nights. Not impressed!

Average. Room not great. no 150. no view and décor not well maintained. Curtains too long and skew lamp shades. Bath and basin drainage very slow. Service at bar poor. No waiter service. Same at buffet dinner and breakfast. Food not up to 5 star standard. Poor selection.

A very worthwile week-end; will return, no doubt

The week-end was very enjoyable. I was very impressed by the attention given to us by phone before we arrived so that any personal issues could be sorted out prior to our arrival. The direction we got were also extremely good. The actual stay was of the highest order - the staff were extremely friendly, and genuine, and the week-end ticked by with a relaxing smoothness. If a criticism could be raised it would be at the check-in and check-out process. This seemed to take an unnecessarily long time - there was no disorder or, it just did not seem to work like the rest of the hotel, however, in fairness, it was busy.

Hotel was very badly run with no idea of guest communications. Restuarants were all closed on one evening & guests were expected to eat in their rooms. Too many staff standing around talking to each other & not attending to guests.

Mount Grace - average presidential experience

Definitely not the quality advertised. The food , at the rambling vine restaurant, was terrible. You describe it as a fine dining restaurant and it was nowhere near that. The food was bad, from over cooked lamb to poor attempt at combinations to not being served promptly at all (to the point of not being given a course, until we asked 3 times for it). There was no choice in the set menu, usually a restaurant would at least give 2 choices of starters/main/dessert.
The hostess was rude and unfriendly. The wait staff appeared overwhelmed and forgetful. The ambience and decor of the restaurant was sullen. It felt more like a funeral parlour than a restaurant.
We did not enjoy our experience at this restaurant and will not return.
Upon entrance in to the hotel/resection we were not greeted. We were there to check in. Instead the man at the desk rudely spoke to us, lingered, and told us we would be helped soon by someone else when another couple entered to check in. They were then attended to before us.
When making recommendations to friends/colleagues I will surely voice he above opinions.
The breakfast buffet was good. Staff here too need training in politeness and prompt service.
The accommodation was great and the spa was impressive. The staff at the spa were helpful and dignified. The presidential villa in which we had stayed was lovely, well maintained, quiet and secluded. I would like to come back and enjoy that, however am put off by the service and food.

Lovely hotel w rooms in 'villas' set in acres of grounds. Beautiful location and views. Staff were friendly, professional and went out of their way to be helpful. Exceptional breakfast buffet and excellent spa facilities with outside pool and flotation pool set among the trees.

We had a wonderful stay there. In our room we had a big very wet sport on the carpet between the bedroom & passage area. We were very disappointed that the a la carte restaurant was all booked out & that nobody mentioned this to us at reception. At reception they said that they would do a booking for us at the restaurant & only when I phoned them later to find out at what time our booking was for, they told me that they could not do a booking for us. We then ate at the buffet restaurant where we had to call a waiter to our table every time we wanted somebody to serve us. We got our wine the third time we asked about it, about three qaurters of an hour after we sat down.
