Staff and management who always go the extra mile. Our visit could have been a potential disaster. I am in my 70’s with heart problems. My only criticism of the management is that it states nowhere that the restaurant is up a steep incline with steps then to climb. After my first visit, for me it was impossible .The staff, then surpassed themselves. Their answer was to bring the meals down to my husband and I. Everything was laid out to perfection, served by Peti ,in a courteous manner. Valentines night was stunning, a beautiful table with flowers, decorative serviettes and lots of love. Everyone came to chat, staff and fellow travellers alike. ‘This was one of 4 Fijian islands we stayed on and a place where young and old exchanged stories and enjoyed the relaxing friendly space. A wonderful place to visit. Thank you to everyone for making our stay so special. All our love Marie and John

antastic place to spend your time.

Mantaray Island about 3.5 hours from the main island in Fiji in the Yasawa Island group, is a beautiful little hamlet of paradise.

I spent 5 nights in a Reef Bure (With AC) an was extremely impressed with the cleanliness and general upkeep. The outdoor bathroom is an absolute highlight with its 3 different light/mood settings at night. The Bure itself was also only 12 step from the beach with its beautiful torquay blue water.

Great snorkeling is on offer straight off the beach (High tide only) and a lovely hotel pool for low tide.

The Restaurant served amazing meals on a set menu that changed every 2 day’s (B,L,D) and during the day you can swap your lunch meal for a pizza by the pool if you like, the resort also offers diving (Which I didn’t do this time) and a Spa that offers a limited but good range of massages.

The Hotel is a cashless hotel, so you don’t need to have a wallet full of cash like I had.

Overall this is a very good 4 star operation in the Yasawa group, and I am definitely looking to come back in July-September next year when the Mantaray swim past the Island.

We had two family reef bure for five days and our experience was universally excellent. The food portions were generous and well-prepared. We were shocked how good the service was so far out from Nadi. The resort focuses on customer care and looks after their house reef. The beds were comfortable and everyone loved the outdoor (but private) showers.

This really is a tropical paradise, walk from the sand in front of the resort straight into the water and drift with tide over the coral reef to see hundreds of different fish siwmming around you. Or relax in the pool when the tide is out.

As a slight caveat, we don't have ANY experience with other resorts anywhere. However, with that said, we had an absolute wonderful time here. Every staff member was friendly, accommodating, and just good people.

There is a compulsory meal plan but, for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner, the food was honestly amazing and when broken down, affordable.

The views are also amazing. To be able to look out from our room (Family Reef Bure 1) and see a blue ocean was something that we don't get to see from the US.

Plenty of activities to do at the resort including being able to just go out and snorkel close to the shore and still experience a beautiful coral reef full of vibrant fish. The experience of getting to go out and snorkel around Manta Rays was also something I won't forget.

I wanted to give a big vinaka to the staff including Lucia, Save, Mere, Noah, Gina, Dive Instructors Nieko, Charle, and Handre, and Snorkeling captains Pate and Jack.

Overall, we would definitely come back here when visiting Fiji and will recommend it to anyone thinking of vacationing here.

Manta Ray island is such a magical place. There’s so many things that I can complement on: how convenient (& beautiful) it is to get to, the delicious food offered, how stunning the views are, and more importantly how amazing the staff is—the staff are definitely the heartbeat of the resort. A special acknowledgment for Mili, Exxon, and Save for making our trip memorable. Vinaka Vakalevu!

The staff is what makes this place great! everyone is so friendly, commited to your time there. The location is awesome with 360 fijian water views and the onep lace that offers mantaray swims. The swims however can be packed with people and it does feel odd to have 20 people in the water to look for 1 to 2 manta rays for about 30 mins to an hour. not sure if thats the experience you would want. Its also located in a place where its quite windy with current that when you snorkel it can be difficult but overall with the abundance of coral and fish its beautiful. I think the place can also do more on consveration and eco tourism esp saw tons of coral bleacing and destruction and even i had a hard time with my fins with the current to not hit the coral at the shallower end. Things like suggesting ot use reef safe only sun screen, some dos and dont about the coral to protect can help. another thing to note is everything here is an add on in terms of $$, your meal plan only includes so much and if you want to eat at differnt ime or want something else, its extra money, the snorkels and dives are extra money etc. that said id definitely stay here again and overall fiji is great.

The beach villas were amazing, especially the outdoor shower. It was quite humid so towels and such were a little mildewed but that is expected in remote tropical locations. The only thing i did not appreciate at this resort was that there was a mandatory expensive food charge that was not mentioned when booking! You were forced to pay for 3 meals per day whether you wanted 3 meals a day or not at the restaurant. It would be much nicer and more fair if they had a la carte dining at the restaurant. Other than the dining issue it was a great small quiet resort with activities to do.

We had such a fantastic stay at Mantaray Island Resort – we’d go back in a heartbeat. Our beachfront accommodation was perfect, the food was tasty, and the excursions and activities were amazing. We celebrated a birthday while we were there and really appreciated the extra touches – the decorated room and the restaurant serenade.

A highlight was visiting the local village – an unforgettable experience. One evening, we had a private beachfront dinner with excellent service from Pita, which was a real treat. We wouldn’t think twice about staying here again on another Fijian Yasawa Islands adventure.

Great stay.

This resort mostly caters to the under 35 group. We had a bungalow in a quiet area away from the dorms, right on the beach. You could snorkel from your room or take a short boat trip to snorkel other areas and see manta rays. Meals are in addition to the room cost-set fee per person per day. The food was really good and the chef made us an anniversary cake that was divine.

A must if you’re island hopping through the Yasawa

Best coral reefs I’ve seen. The service was decent, everyone was very kind and hospitable. Some times you have be a little persistent if there’s a certain activity you want to do, mostly due to staffing issues I think. I think a good way to fix this is to have the front office get if WhatsApp to communicate with guests better. Food was mediocre to good. The only fish they served was Waloo which can be harsh on the digestive tract for some people.

I cannot say enough good things about my time at this resort. It definitely exceeded all of my expectations. The location is beautiful, the meals were good, the room (beachfront villa) was amazing and the staff were wonderful.

The ONLY word of advice I have is to make sure you bring a few between meal snacks with you. There are no options to grab a little something to snack on after hours of snorkeling…. IF you are actually willing to get out of the water.

I had tears when it came time to leave. There is no question about going back. All ready planning my next trip.

If you've done your homework and you know what to expect when you arrive, this place is excellent for a few days away.

The staff are so friendly and helpful - they get to know you by name almost immediately. For a place with dozens of people coming and going every week, that's a really nice touch, so thank you Rosa, Mika, Ropate, Taveki, Save, and so many more.

We stayed in the beachfront villa so I can't speak to the quality of other accommodations, but we were happy with the room. The shower was open to the sky but we didn't have problems with bugs in the room or anything. Just keep the door closed most of the time.

Being able to sit in a beach hammock and watch the sunrise was fantastic. The main guest lounge near the beach has drinks and snacks, along with easy access to the dive shop, activity bure, and plenty of places to relax.

The quality of the meals was one of our favourite things of all, and we always left the dining area feeling satisfied.

Some things to note (not bad things, just good to know):
- not all drinks are included with the meal plan. Water is drinkable around the resort and morning coffee/juice up in the dining area is free, but everything else ranges from $6.50-$25 depending on what you get.
- the resort is built onto a hillside, so you'll be climbing up and down some paths and stairs a few times every day.
- you can get cell data on site with a Fiji e-SIM.

Overall we loved it. Go to disconnect, relax, eat well, and enjoy the sea around you.

I had an amazing week at Manta Ray Island Resort. The best thing about my experience was the Fijian people and Sunny. The Fijians who work there are some of the kindest, happy and most genuine humans I’ve met.

My room was very comfortable. There was so many things to do there. If I wasn’t snorkeling I was walking on the beach, paddling on a stand up, fishing from the beach or offshore. The waters off the beach were incredible with sea life. I got dive certified there, and I highly recommend all the individuals as instructors and or dive buddies, especially Wise.
I am looking forward to returning soon.

My only constructive criticism is that I think the proteins tended to be overcooked…fish, chicken and beef. Otherwise, the food was good.
Also, I think the resort should make all visitors aware before their trip that the resort doesn’t take any currency other than Fiji dollars.

The paddleboards need some fins.

I highly recommend this resort.

Mantaray Island Resort is unlike any commercial resort we’ve ever been to, but was very special in that way. This is a resort for social adventurers, and the staff are the key. They are social, kind, compassionate, funny, and full of life! Everything is organized around meals which are carefully planned & rotated with fresh ingredients & flavors! There is not a wide selection because of the remoteness, but they do their best to accommodate everyone’s special needs. We thought every meal was fabulous, but we are not picky. The resort is fronted with a beach on a shallow marine reserve, best snorkeled at high tide, but they offer paddle boards & kayaks to explore the bay and easily get out to deeper water or other nearby beaches. The opposite beach in the rear of the resort is a softer quiet beach with bigger waves, but is also shallow water & is not great for a swim. We took advantage of all the snorkeling in front of the resort as well as on guided morning tours, to about 5 different locations. The reefs & marine life are absolutely in abundance! We would have tried a dive if able. There are lots of other activities offered, and the staff are great fun in leading all! However, again, this is a remote island. Not all rooms have AC or a bathroom. Be careful in choosing, as there are limited availabilities of rooms. There is a central bath w/ shower stalls & sinks, and no-flush toilets - all community. We saw a lot of grumpy guests who had not read those details. Very clean tho.

Mantaray Island - Fiji

We stayed in a 2 person private bure about 30 steps from the beach, it was very nice. the food in this hotel was EXCELLENT! Drinks seem overpriced at times. Overall a good experience. One tip: If booking this hotel to swim with Mantarays call the week before and see if they had any activity.
Highly recommend the snorkel trip they offer. Make sure you have an underwater camera.

Not staying a third time, almost ruined our trip

Unfortunately I don’t have a great deal to say for Mantaray anymore. The first time we came we absolutely loved it here, it’s why we came back.
The reef is still absolutely amazing so if you want a good place to snorkel this is the place to be there is a abundance of life in that reef area.
We stayed in a reef Bure and it has had a major renovation to it, it actually one of the good changes been made (although we did like the old ones just as much as it had a uniqueness to them in the jungle Bure).
The welcome committee was 3 people which was sad to see as last time the whole of Mantaray staff came down to welcome us. The guest out number the staff as the resort has now added extra rooms, making it an impersonal. This was the only hotel we stayed that the staff didn’t learn our names or barely acknowledge us (last time they all managed to get to know us). The waiter staff did try to make a little effort but impossible due to the fact there isn’t enough staff and guests is over populated. One night they couldn’t even fit everyone in the dining area we had to share our table, we didn’t mind but others had to wait for seats. It’s also squished in together, chairs are touching back to back. Food is awful. Minestrone was watered down, I had no pasta in mine, my partner got 3 shells and neither of us got vegetables. It was more like tomato soup. The first night I ordered chicken... there’s was next to nothing (see my pic), more okra (no one ate it) and heaps of mashed potato

Hi i think there needs to be more educational talks with the people who come to stay about them standing on the reef when they are going for a snorkel. There was lots of gests standing all over the corals when stayed there and that was only for three days. May be there should only be one point of entry into the water from the beach so some of the reef can grow back. It was a shame to see alot of dead coral.

The property was beautiful and unique, set on the beach and extending up a lush tropical hillside. The staff was kind and friendly, the beachfront villas were amazing, and the scuba trips were great. Our only criticism would be in regards to the restaurant and the service provided. While we expected the pace of meals to be more relaxed in Fiji, we were disappointed with the sporadic delivery of food to our party, in every meal we had gaps of upwards of 45 minutes between the first and last person being served. It was very difficult to enjoy the great meals at Mantaray while the service to our party was so poor.

Treehouse was beautiful and perfect walk right out onto the beach. The fan inside was a definite plus during the hottest hours. No bugs or mosquitos got through the protection on the windows and door.

The only improvement would be to have a proper fitted sheet on the beds, as the sheets were regular not fitted and too small for the double bed, often coming off the mattress while sleeping.

Negatives: Upon check-in, we were told the resort's meal plan fee was $20 more than that stated at the time of reservation via our Expedia booking. Staff said they raised the prices April 1. I argued We didn't make the reservation until after April 1, so the price stated should have been accurate. Staff would not accept the booking price quoted us by the Expedia booking for the required meal plan fee and said we needed to resolve the issue with Expedia.
\"Private toilet\" in the bungalow room was a non-flushing porta-potty.
Although the room was pretty, the Bathroom was not cleaned well.
Bed was springy like a cot.
Shower floor in room was made of round rocks and very uncomfortable to stand on.
Meal plan fee too high for quality and amount of food received. Three choices for dinner. The meals took an hour to get and both were cold upon arrival. Lunch could order from a menu; chicken Caesar salad was unsatisfying. Breakfast was served buffet style.
Positives: Snorkeling from right off the beach was Amazing! Could swim 20 ft from shore and find brilliant corals or all colors!
Fresh flowers in the room were a nice touch.
Bungalow proximity to beach is excellent.

We loved our stay at Manta Ray Island Reaort! We booked it thinking it was more of a busget properly, a backpacker resort. It does have accommodations in a dorm if thats what you are looking for. We stayed in a Beach Villa for 4 nights, and we were very pleasantly surprised. Our stay rhere exceeded our expectations. Food was really good, staff very welcoming & friendly, activities (as much or as little as you wanted - don't miss snorkel trip to the \"Garden\" & \"Wall\"). In addition, snorkeling right out front of our Beach Villa was also amazing, as was our massages by Pauline ☺ Vinaka & Moce to our Manta Ray home & family.

You have to stay here :)

My husband and I stayed at Mantaray Island resort for 5 nights in a Reef Bure for our honeymoon. Words cannot describe how absolutely gorgeous the room was - beautiful outdoor shower, comfortable queen size bed and very spacious. Not to mention that the beach/ocean are steps from your door. The snorkeling was incredible and you didn’t need to swim far from the shore in order to see amazing types of fish.

We also did all the activities the resort had to offer - we swam with the Manta rays twice which was awesome, went sunset tubing and visited Soso Village which were all worth it.

The staff at this resort made you feel at home. We felt welcomed and appreciated from the time we arrived to the time we had to sadly leave. My husband and I also stayed at blue lagoon island resort and the staff do not compare. Lastly, the food was delicious! Would reccommend this hotel again and again!!!

Great first Fijian Island experience

Amazing first Fiji experience. Great island and location. Great first time snorkeling experience: saw many coral (though a good amount are dying), so many types of fish, giant clams, stingrays, eels, reef shark and mantarays! Had very cheap scuba certification as well. Dorm were good, communal showers great. Only downside need to have more Fijian experience like food. They only do Lovo once a week and don’t know if they had cava/grog. Missed a cultural experience.

A lot of effort made in cleanliness

It is a really popular resort, difficult to get rooms unless you booked really early.I was there for 7 days. Every morning when someone leave the stuff would be there to clean up the place and place the mattress under the sun outside the dorm. Meal cost 99 FJD, wrongly written as 95FJD on Hotel.com. There are multiple choices for lunch and dinner, unless you stay for a month I doubt you ll get sick of the meals. Did my Open Water diving licence there, diving insurance is included in the package. Provide equipment rental. And paid activities like hiking (which is done on another island) and village tours (didn t managed to go cause minimum group of 4 or willingness to pay for the price of four).

The beach is very nice and clear. Love the pizza. Managed to see a shark and some stingray when we snorkel. Went for the manta ray swim but due to the crowd only manage to see manta ray for a min. Everything is excellent except for the breakfast provided. Would prefer if there is more variety for the breakfast.

Nice resort that's great for relaxation. We stayed for 3 nights and the night before we left, the mantarays did pay us a visit and the snorkeling was great. There's a really nice reef right off the resort where we saw octapus, sharks, and large clams. There were plenty of places to be secluded, a short hike and you're on the orher side of the island with more private little coves. Was really hesitant about the mandatory meal plans but the selections turned out to be quite varied and delicious. Only thing i can critique is for staff to be a little more engaging as we had encountered at other fijian hotels. Staff was good but couldve been better.

We stayed for two nights and overall we were disappointed with our stay in comparison to the amazing time we spent at other resorts. The room was clean and the staff, on average, were pleasant however I can't recommend staying here when we much preferred the close by alternative of Barefoot Manta - the rooms are more homely, the food is better, the staff are friendlier, attentive and genuine, and there is a personal feel. Spend a fraction more and stay elsewhere. We raised a complaint about our stay on checkout and followed-up with an email to which the manager replied to say that she would look to improve staff training - I hope they do.

Tropical paradise with exceptional staff and exqui

Totally worth the 3 hour ferry ride. A beautiful place to stay. The real heart of Fiji are the people. On the islands you get very genuine warm hearted Fijians. The only dark cloud to the story is how terribly exploited they are being. Overseas owners rake in huge Money while paying the locals $2 per hour. I felt incredibly uncomfortable with this. They work long hard hours and deserve to be paid at a rate in accordance with the local economy. Coming from new Zealand, prices in Fiji were comparable, or mostly more expensive, yet our minimum wage is $17.. None of the staff complained to me about their situation, it was only because I asked and the more I found out, the sadder the situation was. they said that other resorts were better paying. I don't want to ruin your holiday, but please advocate for fairness with the managers/owners.
I don't know what can be done to help the Fijians but awareness is always a starter. It was a bit heart breaking. Staff work 35 days on then have a week off to go home and see their family or children who they are supporting with their meagre wages.
The staff were the main reason that I would want to return. If they aren't taken care of as the precious resource that they are, they won't still be there next time...and although I want to see them again and support them, it's a double edged knife with the situation the way it is.

The long drop toilets absolutely reek. The rooms/bures are all so packed together you can hear your neighbours conversations. Shower water - unable to adjust between hot/cold. It can go from cold to very hot. We took quick showers instead.

A Resort without alot of thought put into it

Hotel staff were excellent and friendly thats about where the good things end. We stayed in the reef bure for about $500fj a night. Well overpriced! As soon as you arrive your put on $100 a day meal plan which is compulsory and terrible, food at times was uneatable with minimal options. Beach and facilites was average and needed attention. The management needed to put money back into the resort to bring it close to their competitors.
The 4 of us all in our 20s had 4 nights there, we were bored and looked forward to leaving nearing the end. I wouldnt recommend it when there are better options almost everywhere for the same price.

Good location, bathrooms, great snorkeling

Pros: snorkeling right in front, location is very nice, very lush green, open bathroom is fantastic
Cons: super slow food service, you would have to easily spend 1.5 hours for lunch or dinner. limited food selection.

Nobody needs 5 star hotel presentation in an island! why need to make the food super fancy plates etc. in the expense of making people wait for an 1 hour? serve simple local island food, that is why people come here.

Beachfront and Reef Bures amazing

we stayed two nights, and found the staff to be very helpful and friendly, we also found the accomodation we had booked was lovely, new and clean. They offer a variety of activities for all ages. you are required to pay for a meal plan, food was average, lunch had a great choice, dinner was limited and breakfast a variety of choices, including a hot breakfast. This resort caters for all types of travellers including backpackers. You can go swimming with the Mantaray's and this s the best resort to do this from as it is close to the channel and given they may not be there everyday you a five a minute boat ride. the staff beat the drums when they are spotted so your not waisting precious Fiji time. highly recommend, they offer a number of different accomodation types to different budgets

Backpacker Feel - Watch Out For Daily Food Charge

This was one of the most beautiful resorts I've ever been to. However, expedia has misleading information on costs. The food charge is per day, per person, so it adds up a lot. Also, there is a 350$ ferry ride (one way, per person) involved in just getting to the island - so, this might not be the best budget option.
However, the food was absolutely delicious, the staff were amazing, and the coral reef was astounding. Like, reef and fish were literally steps away from our room.
We booked a treehouse bure, and they didn't have any queen beds available, only twin. That worked out well because of the heat (no AC), but it was still inconvenient since we'd booked a queen. The treehouse bures (and Jungle bure's to a lesser amount) are also right next to the bar - there isn't a lot of privacy and it can be quite loud at night. If you want more of the backpacker experience with activities, those are perfect (though jungle bures had more amenities), but if you are looking for a quieter getaway, the beach bures were lovely (and had the added advantage of private bathroom facilities.)

I stayed in the Dorm with my sister. Guests were for the most part respectful for noise. Lights on the other hand was a little bit of an issue, but I always bring something to cover my eyes, so I was fine. It is a walk to the bathroom, but its a nice walk especially at night with all the stars. Everyone was so nice and very hospitable. For how much you pay, you get a lot! And the food is amazing; worth every penny! The snorkeling was out of this world. A must stay!

Great if you book a Villa

We booked a beachfront villa so the private ensuite was a plus. Did see the shared bathrooms and wouldn't have liked that they were long drop toilets. Food was average. Supposedly the chef was away on vacation during our stay. Beach was not very clean and many visitors actually spent their morning walks picking up all the garbage. Don't expect more than backpackers for your $

Stayed in expensive beach villa, on otherwise dormitory-backpacker resort. I only had 1 day, it rained nonstop so admit that clouds my view. The room itself is lovely, simple but clean with view straight to beach and a lovely tropical outdoor bathroom. As it should, because it is very expensive. However-tv in the room-no signal-no guide in room to read about tv. No phone in the room, so had to climb up the hill to the reception, in the rain, to ask why (only have USB sticks of movies - that's ok, but explain that when I check in). My front door locked, but the back door, to the open bathroom, didn't and there is no safe in the room. There are set meal times, you must pay $95 for 3 meals, and there is no food available at other time except packets of chips. WiFi $20. Check out is 11am, but boat doesn't arrive until 245pm, so nothing to do for 3-4 hours if it is raining but sit around in one communal room full of 20 yr olds playing cards. I went diving, so when I got back at 12pm I was out of my room, and had to have a cold shower, and rent a towel. (The diving was great - although wetsuits old and poor fitting - and seeing the mantas was amazing!)
Possibly this place is fantastic if you a young backpacker paying not so much to stay in a dorm (although $95 meals a lot for a budget?), but I paid>$500 for a night's stay in a 2 star service resort. I don't think they should be offering expensive accommodations unless they have services to match.

Mantaray Island resort is a great place to stay in the Yasawas. The staff are SO friendly and helpful and the food is great. The free activities are plenty and the ones you have to pay for are fairly priced. GREAT snorkeling and was told that the diving is great there too.
Only negatives is that the staff at the reception won't take responsibility for any misprints on the web. We had to be very insisting on getting the food for the price that is posted on this website (87FJD) as opposed to the price they have chnged is to (95FJD). And the bar is kinda pricey too. But I had an amazing time and would definitely choose this place again should I ever come back.
