We enjoyed the trip there, the town and of course the hotel. From reception, which was quick and friendly to the bar and restaurant. Pity we didn’t have time for the pool which looked very inviting.

I would highly recommend the Protea in Clarens. It has a contemporary feel and the rooms are comfortable. It is also very well situated to explore the small town. The only downside was the very noisy air conditioning unit.

Great hotel in great location

We stayed two nights in the nice and quiet village of Clarens. The hotel is comfortable and has nice service and breakfast. Very convenient for walking the little downtown, do the hikings around or drive to the Golden Gate National Park. Recommended.

It was lovely to stay in Clarens and at the Protea Hotel but there are wayyyyyy better options available. The buffet breakfast was very good. But the rooms were small and there wasn’t much in the room itself. I would have wayyyy rather used that money somewhere else.

Their breakfast chefs seemed inexperienced and under trained.

The hotel is well-sited, and in good condition, but when we stayed was very empty, and they still put us in a room with no view. The chef (who, for some reason, helped us with our luggage) attempted to convince reception to put us in a better room, but they were having none of it.

Good location in the heart of the Village

This property has a great location in the village with an easy walk to all local attractions. Although it lacks the \"charm\" of the more authentic accommodation options, the level of facility and quality of rooms is in fact great and better than average in the area. The front desk staff seemed poorly trained and less than friendly and the restaurant was uninspiring but with so many local options it was really just a base to sleep at and from that perspective it is great and offers good value!

3 Night stay in Clarens

The hotel is well located on Main Street in Clarens, and a walking distance to all the popular spots within central Clarens. The check-in was quick, fast and efficient.
The hotel team was always friendly and professional.
Breakfast was included in our stay, which included a surprisingly delightful spread. I was really impressed with social distancing and Covid-19 measures taken by the Hotel.

Empty milk pods of the previous people were still under the chest of drawers. Carpet not vaccuumed. Shower stank - mouldy. Lift not working for 80% of my stay. I battle to climb stairs, but had to - I was on the 2nd floor. Very uncomfortable. Staff friendly.

Lovely hotel with friendly staff and clean, modern rooms. Nice to have a large bath and walk-in shower in the bathroom to cater for all needs.
Only minor point is the swimming pool - about the size of a hot tub!

Is this really a 4* hotel?

If you ever stay at this hotel do not stay in a standard room. Pay extra to stay in the Superior Deluxe room. It boggles my mind that a hotel can have rooms that are so chalk and cheese. Our first night we were in a standard room. The shower is in the room so as a family we always had to go out of the room if someone wanted to shower. Never mind the horrible disgusting fishy smell coming from the shower that permeated the whole room. The bed was also not clean with marks on the pillow covers and hairs on the bed cover. I was extremely disappointed at this supposedly 4* hotel!!!!! We immediately asked for an upgrade but the hotel was full and we could only change the following night. The upgrade made a slight difference but we still found the cleanliness of the hotel seriously lacking from dirty towels in the bathroom, dirty dishes at the buffet breakfast, a dirty elevator with popcorn lying all over the floor. This is not what you expect from a 4* hotel. I will not be in a hurry to stay here again.

My first room had a plumbing issue - other guests' waste appeared in the toilet - so avoid getting a room in the rear wing, once I had been moved to the front wing all was good, had a great stay, and the hotel apologised for with a bottle of sparking line and some snacks.

This place is right in the centre of Clarens, so you can park and walk everywhere. The staff were friendly and helpful, rooms were spotless and the restaurant was good. This is a city-style fancy hotel, so you wont feel like you're out in the countryside, but you will be very comfortable.

I was enormously disappointed not to mention SHOCKED at the totally bad service received at the Reception desk. No smilies. No offers of a map. No welcome greeting. No offer of porter facilities or equipment to do it yourself. The overall attitude of the reception staff was totally lackluster with a strong attitude of being disinterested. We were very happy with the hotel for a weekend breakaway. The only problem was that our room had fixed windows so we were not able to wake up to birdsong and fresh mountain air and had to rely on an air conditioner. I suspect this is only the case in two rooms as other rooms appeared to have windows that could be opened.

Clarens in a spectacular destination, especially the Golden Gate National Park. The quite new Protea Hotel has a good central location and good facilities. Staff was generally friendly, however, the hotel still seems to be in a soft opening mode. The price/value is not right at this time.
