This is a very rundown old motel that's VERY dated. There was no kitchen service, no food, TVs weren't working, and the pool was freezing. Luckily for me, I only required a one night stay on a motorcycle trip. I won't be going back!

I was there off season (May) so I was the only one staying there as a guest I believe so some things were off/ down like the ice machine which was kind of annoying but all in all for the price it was a good stay.

My stay at Monarch Mountain Lodge was supposed to a nice Valentines get away. The pictures that were posted on Expedia made this hotel look like an actual lodge with mountain appeal but what we got was more like the Bates motel. Upon arriving the outside looked very run down. As we entered the hotel to checkin the parking lot and all the way up to the entrance was pure ice not sanded, the king size bed was broke, there was barelyany hot water for a second person which tturned cold within a few minutes, some of the amenities were not available/unoperational like the hot tub and some arcade games, the property overall was in vwry poor conditions with a weird musty smell, front staff not available when calling to report anything, deceptive Expedia pictures of property, room and amenities, large gap aylt the bottom of my hotel room door from it being chewed by animals in which I Im allergic. Poor quality everything. The girl at front counter who checked me in told me she didnt know if my room was cleaned before she gave me the room so she said she would go check. Upon checking she still gave me a room with a broken bed sloping in the middle. I didnt even sleep under the covers because I was scared to. I slept on top of the covers fully clothes, beanie and coat. I would never recommend this hotel to anyone! Needs some major renovations, thorough cleaning and severe updates

There was NO support staff at all at any time! It was weird to try to check in with NO ONE there. I called several times, received no answer and finally went through the hotel trying to find anyone. Finally found a cook in the kitchen and he called to have someone hand me a key. Cannot image any hotel being run this way. It says that if you want a board game ask at the desk, but there was NO ONE ever to ask!

Room was old but clean. Assuming it had dust or mold as we both had frequent sneezing fits. TV turned on but there was nothing available to see. Assuming they didn't pay the subscription. Wi Fi was good so we could watch a show on our phone.

Best part was the cook. Friendly and helpful, and made an excellent stromboli and pizza. We had a large group and he went above duty to set it up for us and serve us. He deserves a better place to work!

This place could be such a great destination hotel for skiing and hiking but management is obviously lacking. It needs someone to love it and create a positive good atmosphere to host families and travelers.

First, check in was woeful. The receptionist was unhelpful and slow, and didn’t tell us about any of the following problems. The room itself was incredibly dry, the heater did not adjust, and the shower/bath was lukewarm at best, which is not nice after a long day skiing. On top of that, it was also not particularly clean, and there was mold in the bathroom. But the problems did not stop there. The next morning, we had planned to be able to take the shuttle to Monarch Mountain to ski, only to find out it wasn’t running. The food was also terrible, both breakfast and dinner. Very minimal options, slow service, and horribly cooked (and it still wasn’t cheap!). My girlfriend also ended up on the toilet for over an hour after eating the chicken tenders, be warned! To top it all off, the hot tubs advertised were out of order. I’d give this place 0 stars if I could, avoid at all costs!

Disappointing stay for the price

We stayed here for several nights due to its proximity to Monarch Mountain, which is really the main benefit of this lodge. Unfortunately, the overall experience did not match the price.

Check-in required calling someone via radio to come to the front desk, and we were given a physical room key. While I understand this is a more rural area, the room itself had several issues.

There was no air circulation in the room. The heater did not work, and the bathroom fan was also nonfunctional. We were told to open the balcony door for airflow, which is not a realistic solution during winter conditions and the shared balcony.

The bathroom floor appeared very dirty, and while we were told it was the “natural grout color,” it still looked unclean. The sink handle was broken, the ice machine was not working, and the electrical outlets were extremely loose. Maintenance later added a plug adapter to turn one outlet into four, but this did not actually resolve the underlying issue.

Housekeeping only replaced towels and did not clean the room during the stay (which is noted in the description, but still worth mentioning for those expecting daily service).

We ultimately left a day early. For a significantly lower price, this would have been more understandable, but at nearly $700 for four nights, the value just wasn’t there.

The location is excellent, but the condition of the rooms and level of service need major improvement.

I spent approximately 10 minutes at the Monarch, enough to take in its darkness, age and eerie nature. The room was similar to a college dorm and the balcony is shared by all. While the front desk staff was very nice even they referred to it as having “character.” It felt like The Shining. The WIFI was very helpful as I booked a room several miles away.

When I first looked at the photo of the exterior , I was reminded of the hotel in ‘The Shining’
The desk clerk had the vibe of a stoned elderly hippy and had to call someone else to take my credit card info.
The lovely views of the mountain were a plus.
The 1970’s decor did distract from dingy towels, etc
The construction has a wrap around balcony which can be entered from any room but definitely did not feel secure.
The graffiti by the entrance is off putting
I’m sure this is an affordable ski lodging base for groups of young people and families. On arrival and departure other putative guests stopped us to ask if the hotel ‘was okay’ … of course we knew why the gentleman who asked upon our arrival was asking after meeting the desk clerk. On departure, we answered by saying ‘we’re still alive’

The evening staff was friendly and professional. The morning staff was non existent. If you want breakfast it is a limited menu for about $13 + per person plus a 20% gratuity added. The room was not clean. There was sticky stuff all over the night stand that looked like spilled soda. The bed was not comfortable and room stuffy. The hot water was Luke warm at best. However, the location and views are wonderful. We loved the area. The hotel is in bad need of maintenance and renovation. Also note there are no options to purchase or get milk or other vending items or snacks. We were traveling with a toddler and asked for milk but was told they did not have any. We would stay again for an overnight stay because we love nature and like the location, but I would not recommend for longer stays or if you are looking for comfort.

Seemed straight outta 1988 and hadn't had much for maintenance or updating. The whole Lodge smelled of Marijuana, there were cameras everywhere, making us uncomfortable. Hot tubs were out of order. Awkward ceiling access panels. There was a breaker panel in the room and was missing breakers so sometime could touch the buss bars if they tried. The elevator lcd panel was missing and many lights flickering throughout. No receptacles available in the room to charge devices. Parking was OK, but there seemed to be parking out back that might've been more secure but we were told \"No\" about parking back there.

Stayed here 3 times now. Only the first time was great! The hotel itself is nice and has nice mountain views. Good internet. Problem is the past 2 times there is no front desk worker. Some old maintence man eventually comes to the desk, then he has to call someone to check people in. He said he cant operate the computer and check people in. last night took 10 minutes as the person he called did not answer right away. i was going to stay there again next week friday, i booked on there website. today i decided to switch trip to Thursday, found there is no way to cancel or change on there website. I have called this hotel at least a dozen times all through out today and they do no answer, the calls go to a call center and they take my info and no one calls back. i also emailed and no reply. If i ever get ahold of them i just going to cancel now and book my Thursday night stay somewhere else. This place has no front desk staff anymore. first time i stayed a really nice helpful lady was working the desk, past 2 times no one there!

The property is a 1970's gem. Not much has been updated since it was built. It was super quiet and the beds were super comfortable.
It recieved such a low rating due to staff. There wasn't any! We got in just after 11pm. There was no one to be seen. We called on their radio, walked around searching for a deak clerk. We tried calling the number to the hotel and spoke with reservations a on the phone who tried multiple times to contact some one to help us check in. It was 1:20am before we got in the room.
This morning was not any better. The only employee on site was the chef for the restaurant who told me that no one would be available to hear my complaint until 3pm.
Overall if your looking to party and run carelessly around a place this is the one to go to. No one is around to stop you.
It would be a great place if the got some caring staff. The view and the bed was worth the money.

When we arrived, there wasn’t anyone in the lobby front desk area. But however, there was a note to use the walkie talkie to let someone know we were there to check in. We finally were checked in and given a key. A real key. Our room was in the basement. The room was very dirty. The toilet had poop in it. It wouldn’t flush. The bed looked like something out of the 70’s. I strongly suggest rethinking about staying here. It was gross!

The balcony view was beautiful. It's open, making it easy to connect with other guests. The space is quiet, clean, and faces the mountains at the back of the property. We especially enjoyed watching the many hummingbirds at the active feeders.

One downside is that there's no way to control the temperature in the room. One of us slept well, while the other woke up feeling hot. If you prefer a cooler sleeping environment, consider bringing a portable fan—and don’t forget an extension cord.

Overall, we would definitely stay here again.

While the check in process was fairly easy and welcoming, make sure to not walk out of the far exit on floors 3-5 to the outdoor stairwell because the doors will lock behind you and you will be stuck outside above the 3rd floor with no phone service. Banged on the door for 30 minutes before I could get someone to let me inside and the front desk lady said that it’s an exit only and then you have to jump off the 4th floor if you wanna get out, so good luck.

The location is a challenge for anyone running a hotel. Not in a community and at a very high altitude, it's got to be difficult to keep up. It does feel like investment dollars are needed. The only complaint we had was there is ZERO signage for this hotel right now. Not sure why, maybe waiting on a replacement, but not even a piece of paper in the window telling you this is a hotel.

The room space was good. It appears to be a warehouse or industrial building that was changed into a hotel.? The check in hostess was super friendly and amazing (the biggest redeeming value). I would definitely ask for third floor or above as third was the main. Just a little creepy overall. Sheets were clean. Everything else was pretty old. I was trying to stay near Buena Vista and it comes up on Expedia as if it were in or near Buena Vista but it’s 40 minutes away.

Cute and Quite, but outdated

We enjoyed a nice and quiet stay. Rooms and Lodge in general seemed very outdated, but clean.
We stayed at a time that was not very busy so staff seemed very minimal, It was hard to find someone when we needed anything. Ice machine did not work. Bed was comfy and water was hot with good pressure. Very much enjoyed wondering around the property and taking in all the natural beauty of the area.

This hotel has so much potential and was probably a wonderful place about 20-30 years ago. It is in much need of repairs. There were ceilings about to collapse due to water damage. It could use a good cleaning (dead flies in the window sills). I understand we were going into the \"off-season\" but the staff was a skeleton crew. They were however very nice.

The location is beautiful and the lodge has the ability to be an amazing place. However, there is no way to control the temperature in the room and it was extremely hot the entire stay. The bath did not drain for hours after use. The arcade was full of broken games that just took our money. The hot tubs are all broken aside from one, that was filthy and not even quite warm. Unfortunately, the property continues to decline and we will stay elsewhere next trip.

This place has gone downhill and that's saying a lot, because it was never great to start with. We've been staying here for many, many years because of the location to Monarch Mountain. This will be our last stay. The hot tub was dirty, and only 1 out of 3 was working. The one that was working had a low water level and would not get above 90 degrees. The 2 that were not working had trash and debris piled high in them. The shower had no hot water, so after a cold hot tub, that was a bummer to take a cold shower. There seems to be no staff anywhere, felt totally deserted on Saturday night and Sunday morning. Restaurant has insanely expensive menu items for the food that you get. Made sense that we were the only ones in that restaurant. A bummer to see how bad this place has become.

We stayed at the lodge a total of 6 nights. Older lodge but clean. Parking lot was full of snow and very, very dangerously icy. Through our entire stay snow removal was at a bare minimum. We had to almost crawl to our vehicle everyday just not to fall. Thank goodness we wore our snow boots. It was hard to find staff when tryinh to check in and the lobby was extremely cold to wait in. Waited for 20 minutes, never checked in just given a set of keys and then not explained how to not lock the room doorknob and got locked out of our room the next day. Seeing any sort of staff was very rare. Was only given clean towels and our trash taken out once out of our 6 night stay. I had to help myself to the staff linen closet to get us clean towels and toilet paper. I don't like that you have to pay extra to stay in a room with a refrigerator. Ice machines only worked on one floor. Pool was old but very clean and heated. Gym equipment was very old, disappointed there was no treadmill. Dogs barking randomly. A few days out of our stay we saw no one and got that movie \"The Shining\" feeling. Did not try the restaurant. Not even sure if it was really open. Did not see staff through some of our stay to even ask. I would feel comfortable staying here again but not for 6 nights and not during the cold months. Was surprisingly clean for how dated the lodge is. Having Directv in our room was a plus.

This place has never been renovated. Housekeeping every other day, even garbage was not removed from the room. Water in the shower was cold at pick hours. Hot tub outside is just too cold NOT HOT.
The housekeepers stole our portable grill, they returned it.. but still I didn’t want to have this kind of experience.

The room we booked was listed to sleep 5. It only had 2 queen beds. No other bed. The staff was helpful and got us a roll away but the listing was wrong. Some of the listed amenities don’t work but good place for price.

Unique property with all the amenities. Beautiful location, friendly staff. Working jacuzzi plus nice indoor pool, sun deck and games. We will def be back.

It looked a bit abandoned when i pulled up. No sign of its name on the building. Unfriendly front desk person. Only realized later that my credit card was charged for an extra fee. Run down.

Off Season Stay

Needed a location for three travelers, and we have stayed at the Monarch Mountain Lodge previously. The location is not modern but is a great stop over in the off season. The location says check in is between 3 pm and 11 pm but in two stays here, staff was not available until almost 4 pm. Rooms could use more power outlets. We were able to get a small dinner from the restaurant which was decent.

Location was convenient for where we were staying. We had been backpacking all week and wanted a place to stay that could allow for a bit of relaxation before we drove home. We specifically picked this place since it was further from a populated town and had a restaurant of it's own. We had not planned to leave while we were there. However, the menu they had on the website did not come close to matching what was in the restaurant. (when we inquired about this we were laughed at and told their menu online hadn't been updated in years) At this point it meant we were either eating our leftover trail food or going out to eat for every meal and having to drive in town. This was not the experience we had expected, and being laughed at for expecting the website to have updated information on the hotel was not appreciated or professional in any way. The room was clean, I don't care it was outdated, we just wanted a place to sleep after being in the cold all week. Sleep did not happen as we had a baby next door that screamed all night both nights and the hotel has very poor insulation between rooms. (We could hear in detail what they were doing in the bathroom and normal conversations on top of the all night long screaming) No windows and balcony french doors couldn't be left with the curtains open because we had people staring in at us from outside the door since the balcony is open to everyone on that side of the hotel without any partition. Which added to noise and lack of privacy

I received this in an email right after I booked the hotel:
This notice is confirmation of your booking for Monarch Mountain Lodge. We can't wait to see you on …. This is also notification we have completed the charge for your 10% booking fee(s). Please note this is not an extra fee. Your balance is due upon arrival. You will be asked to submit your ID and payment card when you arrive.

I was NEVER told about this fee before booking!!

The hotel also had NO hot water that weekend. We stayed 2 nights. I gave them the benefit of doubt that it would be fixed by Saturday late afternoon. We asked them Saturday evening if it was fixed. Front desk said it was. It was not. When we checked out, they said they would give 50% back for not having hot water. We received nothing. Not professional. They knew they didn’t have the part before we checked in.
This hotel was already on my 1 and done after the extra fee. Now it’s never to go back.
Good thing the no hot water issue was In the summer.
Too bad really, we have monarch season passes.

I stopped here on the ski off season (good price) on my way back from.a backpacking trip in the Colorado Rockies. Old building, but bring kept up quite well. I hoghly recommend a dtop here in the off season. Very friendly staff who go all out to make your dtsy a nice one.
