Nice place. Had a jungle trail down to the beach. Quaint complex. Nice set up and grounds were beautiful. Property manager was not onsite, but was very quick to answer any questions via whatsapp. A few drawbacks - lack of outlets, water pressure was terrible (but good hot water), very steep driveway (luckily my spouse is a confident driver), no microwave. But the biggest drawback was the noise from the street. The town has really rough roads (lots of potholes), so people ride ATV's and motorcycles, which are very loud. There were also lots of trucks on the road. We stayed in Bungalow #6, which is right next to the street. The traffic started at 5am and lasted all day and into the evening. Not what I expected to hear in Costa Rica. Was very disappointing.

Cool place but was woken up by the rain which sounded like metal grinding because of the type of roof and lack of insulation. Not sure I would stay again but overall was a good experience and would recommend if not bothered by super loud rain.

The bungalows are on the outskirts of Santa Teresa, which was good. Santa Teresa extremely busy, lots of surfers.
Beach was beautiful but not really swimmable due to rip current. Not a lot of close by restaurants to chose from

This place is great as long as you really read the reviews and set expectations. Very clean room, great pillows, comfy bed and good showers! This totally worked for us because we had a car and could easily go eat and get around town. If you’re there in the dry season the roads out front are dirt and dust kicks up everywhere so walking isn’t ideal. Plus it’s a hike to town - solid 20 min walk. The offer of breakfast needs to be prearranged I think. Santa Teresa is such an amazing destination we were never planning on hanging out at the hotel but if you are, this might not work for you. So worth it for us. The owners were so responsive and helpful. Pure pleasure! Pura Vida.

Makanas felt so homey and warm. Tyler and Mary were great hosts and helped us with anything we needed. The bungalows are so beautiful and clean. The beach is breath taking, private, and we got to watch sunsets every night. I do suggest renting an ATV to help you get around town.

We stayed with a young toddler during a rainy season, in the middle of a tropical storm, and even though mosquitoes, heavy rain and the rest of the jungle life was a bit more aggressive than during dry season, we enjoyed our stay. Property is beautiful and you get to experience jungle like to it's fullest. One of the best beaches with amazing tide pools in ST is 2 min walking . Property owners are very accommodating, warm and attentive. We appreciated all the attention and kindness they showed to us. We'll be back.

Macanas is an excellent choice if you want to stay at the beach (without breaking your bank) yet within walking/driving distance from the hustle of the town. Property is gorgeous, small and private, and located in the jungle so you get to see and experience all the wildlife.
Property owners are amazing and very accommodating, we could not wish for better attention, communication and hospitality they provide. We are very grateful for having found this place.

My wife and I stayed at Makanas for 10 nights on May 2024. We definitely enjoyed our stay. The studio is nice ans has everything for the stay. The staff (Vane and Leysi are the best) was awesome and prepared the best waffles and gallo pinto ever for breakfast!

I would HIGHLY recomend that if you did not rent a 4 wheeler or a car, find somewhere else to stay because Makanas is very far as a walking distance from either bars/restaurants/supermarkets, and taxis are extremely expensive

The bungalows are a hidden gem- newly restored and beautifully appointed, spacious for 2 people, away from the overcrowded tourist places, yet basically at the beach (short jungle walk away). Tyler, our host, was always there, super nice and super helpful. You need to have a 4WD to get there (steep driveway, about 2 miles from Santa Teresa downtown, rough roads). Its 5 min drive to the supermarket, 5 minute drive in the other direction to the Hermosa Beach (probably the best spot for surfing classes). Two nearby restaurants were closed (rain season), but its super close to multiple other food options (restaurant at the banana beach was probably our favorite). Highly recommended!

Makanas is an amazing place to stay in Santa Teresa! Tyler has done a wonderful job with the property and is very helpful with locals tips and recommendations. We got an ATV rental in town for the five days we were here and it was awesome. The perfect (and very fun) way to get around and explore. The breakfast was included at Makanas and was a delicious and simple Costa Rican plate. The rooms were up to date, cute, clean, and air conditioned. The beach was beautiful and 30 seconds from the front door. I’d highly recommend staying here as a home base for exploring Santa Teresa!

The bungalows are very peaceful, clean and cozy and the location was absolutely perfect! We loved every minute of our stay there and have already recommended Makanas to our friends and family.

Tyler was an excellent host and provided us with great recommendations about what to do in town: where to go, what to see, what to eat and how to get around and make the best of our trip. He was incredibly hospitable, attentive to us and made our stay wonderful.

Lacie makes a great breakfast, as well! Highly recommended.

I loved the king bed bungalow.The breakfast was a lovely start of my day. Two coures presented perfectly, a taste sensation. So much food, no need for lunch! Gulia and Simon truly care about your experience here and were very helpful arranging transport for me, as I only know a handful of spanish. Great dinner options a short walk away too but away from the busyness of town. Definitely coming back!

Unfortunately this was a very disappointing experience. The bed sheets and bath towels were clearly not washed from the last person that was there, the toilet and sink were completely dirty and not to mention the fan that had a large amount of dust. The bathroom door would not close and we had to keep it open the whole time. I booked the hotel because it was a 9.2 rating and this rating was not even closed to what I got, personally I would not recomend this hotel.

Our host was really lovely and the breakfast was excellent! Location is a bit close to the road and therefore a bit dusty. Cabins are a tight fit for a family of four - perfect for two. Beach is a short walk, easy to access for sunrise and sunset. Swimming right at the beach access is rocky but again it’s a short walk to sandy sections. Nearby Playa Hermosa is exceptional!

2 thumbs up!!! We were exhausted from getting to Santa Teresa by taxi, boat, and shuttle. We met Jon, the owner, right when we pulled in. We told him we like to book the first night on vacation and let the locals tell us what to do and where to go next. Jon spent several hours telling us what we need to do. He booked ATVs for us and booked us a flight back to san jose which saved us 10 hours of travel:) We would have never knew. I have traveled to over 50 countries and have never written a Review. I feel this place deserves a review. Jon was the most hospital hotel owner I have met in my travels.

The place was perfect, right on the beach, and comfortable. We will be back to stay again.

Quiet spot with character. Good value!

I spent one night at Makanas with my boyfriend. We had dinner in playa Carmen. It was a great stay for a gr at price. It’s definitelt a bit isolated from the bustling surrounding areas but we liked that. Cute little cabanas tucked away in the jungle. Would recommend it for anyone who is looking for a quiet/mellow night or two.

What a sweet spot. Beautiful cabinas that were clean and stayed cool with AC. Less than a minute walk to the beach and sunsets to melt your mind.
The staff is so kind, honest, fun and helpful. They really made our stay amazing!!!
Also Makanas is a little north of the main hotels and restaurants in Santa but it makes for a peaceful and relaxing stay. So nice to get away from it all!!!!!

Cute bungalows, walk to the beach, north of town

The bungalows are perfect if you are looking for a small, cute room walking distance to the beach. Massimo is the man, he is super friendly and will assist with getting the most of your stay in Santa Teresa. Definitely recommend having an atv or car, it is north of town (although the town is growing rapidly to the north) and can be a long, hot walk in dry season. Massimo has a guy that can hook you up with atv, they bring them to you at the bungalow. Breakfast is amazing, fresh fruit, coffee, eggs... it just kept coming! At sunset walk down to the beach and find a waterhole to sit in with a cold beer and take in the beauty of Costa Rica. Hope you enjoy this magical place as much as we do!

Really nice and modern room, wery clean.
Close to the beach, 100 meter/ yards.
WiFi worked maybe 5 hours of 2 days, unpossible to reach staff by telephone/ WhatsApp since the WiFi didn’t work.
Cleaning staff couldn’t speak one word English.
The road from Santa Teresa to the Lodge is really bad, and you need 4x4 car to park at the Bungalows.

Mysig och fräsch bungalow

Massimo, ägaren, var super hjälpsam med allt man kunde tänka sig behöva. Underbar strand i direkt närhet. Super bra yoga på flera ställen i närheten. Sängarna var breda och bekväma. Personalen i övrigt var super trevlig!
