OMG!! From the 11 course feast to the stone onsen (spa bath) to the friendly staff to the gardens (beautiful even in Feb before all the acers get their leaves & the cherries their blossoms).

Dressing up in a yukata; eating & sleeping in a tatami mat room with sliding doors and windows - you HAVE to do this if you are anywhere near Osaka.

Such a beautiful place to stay! The Kaiseki experience and the traditional Japanese setting, we loved it! Staff is very friendly and even helped us to celebrate our daughter’s birthday. Not to mention the amazing views while you are soaking in onsen.

Staff was wonderful! Helped with all our luggage and gave a comprehensive overview of the facilities and our amenities.

Everyone was so friendly and welcoming. We reserved the private outdoor onsen and it was everything we wanted/needed to relax after five days in Tokyo.

The dinner and breakfast was excellent! The pacing of the meals as well as the clearing of used dishes felt very relaxed and natural. We did not feel rushed at all.

We will definitely come back in the future and stay multiple nights!

If you are visiting Osaka area and want to experience authentic traditional Japanese lodging (ryokan) in an off the beaten path place, this might be the place to go. It's about 40 minutes away on a local train from Namba statiuon (Nakai Koya line). There doesn't seem to be much around the ryokan although we really didn't explore. We stayed in a similar property in Hakone when visiting Tokyo a year ago and it was a well known hot spring town so there were a lot more things to do. We stayed at a detached annex which had more than enough room for our family of four. Private outdoor hot spring tub and Western style indoor tub available, but weather was just too hot to truly enjoy the outdoor. We chose half boarding so had Kaiseki style dinner and also a traditional breakfast. Nothing much to complain except the futons were somewhat too thin so it was a bit rough on my back. Other than that, it was a nice stay. Outdoor common swimmng pool was not open yet in the beginning of July so be aware.

I love how accommodating the staff was here. We were nearly an hour late for our dinner but they went above and beyond to serve us anyway. The food was one of the best we've had throughout our entire trip of Japan as well. The room and atmosphere was also very cozy and we loved pretty much everything!

Absolutely wonderful place to stop on the way to Koyasan. I will admit when I showed up at the inn I was later than expected, had walked many miles, and was in quite a bad mood. The welcome I received changed all of that. They took me straight to my room and gave me tea and treated me like I was part of their family. I had the best meal of my time in Japan at this inn. The onsen was the perfect temperature and felt so good on my sore muscles. If you are maki my the journey to Koyasan this inn is a fantastic place to stop. The town is full of history and the staff were so kind to me even though I was dirty and sweaty and tired. I left feeling clean and refreshed!

Beautiful property with delicious food and an incredibly helpful and friendly staff! One of the staff members even saw us rummaging through a bowl of flags for their \"Where are you from\" map and we casually mentioned that we couldn't find our country but it was alright, then left for a little walk around the property. When we came back, the staff member had printed it out for us! Little details like that show the staff pay attention and go beyond what is required to help their guests. Would absolutely stay again. Thank you!

This was our first trip to Japan, ever, so we wanted to experience authentic and traditional Japanese hospitality, and what an amazing surprise we got.

We rented the suite, which is the annex. You basically get an entire traditional japanese house, with a private onsen, all for yourself.

From the moment you arrive to the ryokan, you get the warmest welcome you can imagine. You are taken to your guest house and introduced to everything around a house. They provide you with Yukatas so you can feel comfortable.

For dinner, they come and serve you like a 5 or 6 course meal (I can't remember exactly how much they were), fully authentic seasonal japanese food. Once you are done, they come pick up the food from your dining room, and set up the futons were you will be sleeping, really comfortable futons.

By morning, they come and serve the breakfast and store the futons.

Did I mentioned the amazing private onsen all for yourselves? What an amazing experience onsens are. Now I understand why it is so embedded in Japanese culture.

The only thing I regret is not staying another night, since we had a very tight Japan schedule. But if you ever go to Japan, at least once stay in a traditional Ryokan to enjoy tradition. And I cannot emphasize how great a decision would it be to choose Nanten-en. And if you can afford the suite, go for it. It is something you need to experience once in a lifetime at least.

Enjoyed our stay at Amami Onsen Nantes-en. Convenient location right next to train station. Friendly, professional staff. Large, traditional Japanese room with comfortable sitting area overlooking lovely garden. Dinner in room was delicious, server top notch. Breakfast in main dining room was also excellent. Small onsen overlooking forest very peaceful. If you’re uncomfortable being naked in a large hot tub environment with strangers this may not be for
you. I also had a restless night sleeping on the futon, but my wife slept fine. One night was enough for me but I’m glad we got to experience a traditional Japanese ryokan.

Nantenen was exactly what I had expected from a traditional Japanese ryokan experience. I especially enjoyed the welcoming process and was awestruck by the detailed way the kaiseki dinner was presented. Breakfast the next day was amazing as well and filled us up for adventures for the rest of the day. Nantenen was conveniently located within two minutes stroll from the Amami rail station and was removed enough from the city but not inaccessible. My family and my fiancé really enjoyed the experience and would not hesustate to recommend Amami Nantenen to other travelers looking for this type of experience.

We had the great opportunity to stay here for one night when we were passing through to Osaka. The staff here is absolutely amazing. Gary is so knowledgeable of the Japanese culture it is astounding. The facility itself is really amazing. From the onsen to the garden it's just breathtaking. We had the pleasure of experiencing the multiple course dinner and the breakfast the next morning. If you want to treat your self, this is definitely a place you should want to experience. From the traditional bathhouses to traditional meals you can't go wrong.

Nanten-en couldn’t be lovelier. We stayed in this architecturally significant inn in cherry blossom season. Although conveniently located footsteps from the train station, it couldn’t be more peaceful. The staff is friendly and attentive, the grounds are beautiful to walk in, and there are great hiking/biking places nearby. We’d definitely stay here again!

This is a #1 place to visit. Really enjoyed the facilities. Great staff and delicious meals. However there is almost nothing else to see in Amami. There is a train station within 3 min walk that can take you anywhere around this region of the mountains. I’d stay here again

Upon check-in an English sealing staff (Gary) greeted us and talked us through information we need to know about the place and some interesting facts on Japan cultures. The place is great, our room is on the ground floor which the onsen bath and toilet just around the corner. Onsen opens throughout the night which is great as me and hubby checked in later and we popped in the bath in midnight which is lovely with the view outside. Staff were really helpful and happy to help us with anything we needed. Will visit again for sure.

It’s a very traditional inn locates in a very peaceful area (45 minutes away from Namba Osaka), and the the staffs are supper nice and friendly, the dinner and breakfast are execellent, they made the great Kobe beef!!! And the garden was very pretty too!
As a hotel for more than 70 years, the rooms are a bit old, we found a cockroach when we stepped into our room. Other than that, it was great onsen inn to stay!!!

As this was our first time in a Ryokan, my husband and I opted for a dinner and breakfast package also. The food cost more than the stay at the hotel and felt like we were eating freeze dried food.
The dinner was a 7course degustation, but one of the courses was pickles. We filled up on steamed rice.
The hotel smells mouldy and the place needs a serious update as it has stains everywhere.
The stay was not relaxing because I felt like we had to whisper constantly.
The saving grace was the staff that were so attentive, kind and really go out of their way to make your stay a comfortable one.

Perfect easy getaway. Lovely traditional Ryokan.

Wonderful stop once you are at the Ryokan. It is very convenient to get to from the train. About 70 feet from the station. Once you arrive you don’t hear or see the train.

The building is beautifully put together. The detailing is lovely and well thought out. The rooms are very comfortable and quite lovely. The outlooks from the three rooms our group had were all beautiful.

The meals are stunning. We did have a bit of a challenge with japanese cuisine throughout Japan with 3 in our group being vegetarians. The ryokan was very accommodating.

The onsen is an indoor pool with beautiful hot water coming in from the mountain. Your skin feels wonderful after a brief soak.

It’s a perfect weekend getaway or short trip from Tokyo. We highly recommend this spot. We all felt dreamy and relaxed during our stay. Time somehow disappears. Would have loved to stay longer.

We wanted a traditional Ryokan experience, with onsen, gardens, 10-course private dining and our own set of rooms with mats and a view and futons. This place really delivered!
The outlook and setting was wonderful and relaxing, and is only a minute from the train station. The food was wonderful, quite approachable for a fussy westerner, and the staff were so friendly.
Arrive early (3 pm) to make the most of the facilities – we had a long onsen experience (you look out into a wooded area), wandered the small but beautiful garden in our yukata, had a two-hour 11-course meal, then slept wonderfully on futons. The next morning we had a full Japanese-style breakfast before catching a convenient train back to Osaka. We plan to re-visit in 5 or 10 years time!

Wish I could stay longer.

The place is easily accessible and super close from the Amami station. Some staff was able to speak English so we didn't have any problem communicating. The place was beautiful and it felt like we had the whole area (including the gardens) to ourself. They lent free yukatas for us to wear after our onsen. The onsen itself was very clean even though it was a shared bathroom and we were lucky that no one was there while we took a shower since it was both our first time and we were quite awkward having to bathe with other people.

When we were there, they upgraded our room since there was an available vacancy. Yet they didn't treat us as if we paid a cheaper price than the others. The staff are always friendly, smiling whenever they see us. The food were great and the room was very comfortable, it had the vibe of a traditional Japanese ryokan room.

The only complaint I would have is the general check-in time that Japan hotels have which was 3pm. We felt like we weren't able to spent more time there as we had to check out by 10 AM of they would charge us with an hourly rate. If you want to fully enjoy this place, you should at least stay for 2 nights. Even so, having a 1-night trip still allows you to enjoy the ryokan experience.

Ps: take a walk around the garden at night as they provide a flashlight.

Very convenient to travel to, and it's a minute walk away from amami station.
We booked it mainly for its onsen and meals. The pictures for onsen looked more beautiful then it is. There's no outdoor onsen but you can slide the large frame windows open for the cool air. The amenities provided in the onsen area were rather basic.
The quality of breakfast and dinner to be of average.
The room was comfortable. There is no toilet in the room. Basins and toilet bowls are in common area outside of the room.
While the overall place is rather well-kept, the garden that's attached to the room needs maintainence.
Service from most of the staff was good. There were English speaking staff on duty all day.

Good Ryokan Experience

I enjoyed my stay at this Ryokan. Our room was cosy with a garden view. The Onsen was good and the meals superb. Service staff was prompt, considerate & helpful.

The location of the ryokan is just a short walk outside the Amami Train Station. Very convenient. There is also a beautiful garden within its compound.

It will be good if the ryokan provide a better map with prominent landmarks and estimated walking time to key places of interest in the local area. This will enable visitors to venture out on their own without fear of getting lost. It was difficult to ask the local people for directions as they were not able to communicate in English.

Conviently located out-of-town choice

The location is superb as we look for somewhere between Osaka and Koyasan. Just exit the station Amami you can get the sign to this Onsen, walk just 1min to reach the entrance. The young guy explained everything well, very hospitable and good English with Japanese standard. The hot bath is quite small, don't expect like real Onsen. In general very atmospheric place and a historic house.

Tranquil Traditional Japanese Experience

A Short 40 minute training ride from Osaka-Namba and you will arrive at Amami station where the hotel is literally a 2 minute walk away. You will notice the hotel's beauty by its traditional wooden structure with its lovely dark green tiles surrounded by a carefully trimmed garden.

The rooms are sufficiently large acting as a living/dining area during the day and converting to a sleeping area at night. the floors are covered in tatami and provide a wonderful feel on the feet.

Dinner is typically Kaiseki, however i would prefer all the food to fill up the table at once as opposed to it being served course by course.

The onsen is the jewel of the place, any patron is highly recommended to experience the full pleasure of the Japanese bathing ritual

We stayed that in march/april 2016 in a six people room. It was very good size. The room was clean overall, except there was some dust on the decorative items and corners. Bathroom was super clean.

Service was exceptional, staffs were very friendly and you could tell that they worked hard and tried their best to make ur stay as welcome as possible. The hotel seems very organized such as in the morning the staffs put ur shoes ready at the front door with your room name tag next to them. When it's bed time, they would remove all furnitures from your room and set up ur beds within 10 minutes. The lady who served us primarily spoke good English so it was helpful.

Our room rate came with half-board (breakfast and dinner). Dinner came with a lot of good food, but breakfast was pretty small portion and didn't come with much protein so if you go to hot spring before breakfast, your stomach may not feel fulfilling from the breakfast. They also have menu to order, a bit pricey like a shrimp tempura undo for $13/$14 USD but the food did taste very good and very fresh.

The place is relaxing as other reviewers stated. The Japanese style futon-bed was surprisingly comfortable.

Our stay was fantastic, the staff were lovely and the overall experience is not one you will forget. The hotel is sign posted very well straight out of Amami station but please note it is a 45 minute train ride out of Osaka and the hotel likes guests to be back by 10pm each night.

A nice enjoyable and relaxing Stay

My friend and I stayed at this place for two nights just to experience a Japanese style ryokan. I was please with everything the place had to offer. The staff was super friendly. The bathroom and room they provided me with was spacious and clean. The place was easy to find, literally a minute away from the train. Even though the train is closed by I couldn't hear it at night,plus trains in Japan stop running after a certain time. They provided me with new supplies of toiletries daily and with a yukata to wear. They provide with a good selection of food on the menu. The room I got had a faint smell of smoke this is the only reason why I won't give it a five stars. Other than that I would recommend this place for anyone on a budget that would like to experience a japanese ryokan. The staff here really knows how to make you feel comfortable and at ease.

Fantastic Japanese Ryokan

Not your standard hotel, this is a Ryokan. From yukatas and hot spring style bathing to traditional Japanese meals, you get the full experience here. The breakfast offered here is a traditional Japanese breakfast, different each day, as opposed to the buffet offered in many hotels. A wide variety of dinner options are available as well, though we generally ate in town before heading back.

While the hotel is a bit of a train ride away from Osaka, the location is quiet and the grounds are beautiful.

Wonderful ryokan for quick getaway

Chose this ryokan because it is right next to the Amami JR station. It is located in this charming little Japanese town about 45 minutes train ride from Shin-Imamiya.

The ryokan and its grounds are terrific. It is a typical Japanese garden with beautiful flora. Even though it was winter, I spent a couple of hours in the afternoon walking the grounds and shooting photos. I can only imagine how wonderful it will be during spring and summer!

We had 3 meals at the ryokan. Breakfast (included) and lunch (paid separately) were great (menu items are pricey). Our package include a 10-course Kaiseki dinner which was the slight letdown. It lacks that bit of finesse, inspiration and quality. It wasn't bad but we had better and were expecting more.

All in all, a nice stay and something that we can recommend, if the price and timing is right for you.

We were glad that we booked 3 nights stay with Amami Onsen Nanten-en.
Our dinners were splendid. Breakfast too.
Staff were extremely friendly and accommodating.
We only had full of praises without any complaint.

Great for rest and relaxation!

We were here last November 25-26, 2015 for a short relaxation day after touring around Osaka and Kyoto. We were in awe when we saw the place: quiet + very close to nature + traditional Japanese style rooms and food = perfect place for that well deserved rest we were seeking after days of endless travel around Osaka and Kyoto. I highly recommend this place for rest and relaxation purposes and to have a feel of traditional Japanese culture.

Lovely hotel, somewhat remote

Greeted on arrival, taken on tour of facilities. Staff spoke English and always very helpful. Room spacious and clean with sitting area overlooking small garden.

If on set menu, dinner served in room, breakfast in dining room. Futons probably the most comfortable of trip with two types of pillows, for those who don't like the ball filled type.

We spent 2 nights at the ryokan, although one would have been enough. Stunning location and the perfect place to escape the city life! The staff were very friendly and hospitable, and the onsen (thermal baths) were great. The only downside was our room size was a little small compared to most other rooms, and there was no wifi in the room despite it being included in the price. Otherwise, highly recommended for an authentic, traditional Japanese experience! Would visit again.

A beautiful, traditional ryokan just a minute's walk from the station. The staff are very friendly, welcoming and efficient and greet you on your return with tea and sweets in your room. The surrounding area is beautiful, with the smell of trees and wood smoke. Amami is a bit of a hike from Osaka city but that just adds to the appeal. The onsen is very relaxing but some may be embarrassed bathing nude in front of others but if you can get over that then it is a fantastic experience. We had no problems taking our boys into the onsen also. I would recommend any foreigner to try this place as it represents the true Japan.

Stunning traditional building, onsen, and garden

Only 40min by train from central Osaka (Namba), but virtually in the country. This traditional, and very photogenic Japanese inn with attached onsen, surrounded by a beautiful formal garden, is embedded in a narrow valley covered in forest with few other buildings in the vicinity. The external sliding doors of the marble-lined onsen can be opened to the outside air and views of the garden.

The rooms are spacious, tastefully decorated, clean, and quiet. We had an excellent, reasonably priced kaiseki dinner in the Japanese-style dining room looking out into the garden. There was also a great selection of locally made craft goods for sale at bargain prices.

The staff were very helpful, and spent some time working out the best way for us to get to Kansai airport for an early morning flight.

If you like relaxation..

If you are looking for a traditional Japanese experience at an Onsen this is the place to do it. The staff bends over backwards to accommodate your needs while you enjoy traditional dinner, breakfast and the public baths. We were also able to schedule a massage in our room prior to sleeping. Sleeping set up is also Japanese style with futons on the floor. Very cool!
For some this may be enough as far as relaxation goes but for the more the adventurous you mind find it a bit boring. The area is beautiful but does not have much to offer as far as activities go, we did feel slightly restricted and we were out pretty early the next day. Wireless Internet not great.

Beautiful, quiet area and inexpensive. Staff was very friendly and accommodated food preferences which was greatly appreciated. Down side was no bathroom (toilet) in our room. I think it was our only choice when we booked, but I believe some rooms do have them.

My family loved our stay at Amami Onsen Nanten-en. The house and facility are slightly old. But the services provided by staff are amazingly good. We stayed for 2 nights. Whenever we came back, the staff with serve us traditional Japanese tea with some delicious tea food. Whenever we came back from breakfast, the room would be cleaned and tea set are ready to drink more tea. The tea set is always there with high quality tea to enjoy. After dinner, after they made our bed, they would bring a bottle of ice water since they know that we might feel thirsty after onsen. The food is different every night and every morning. They will serve one course by another, they always anticipate when we would finish one course and then brought in another one. Every piece of food was served in the most beautiful and suitable pairing porcelain cups or bowls. It had been such an enjoyment of anticipating and enjoying the both the flavor and the beauty of the food. The quality and taste of these porcelain might be best among all 3 R+yokans we stayed during this trip. Whenever we came back or leave, the staff would come to greet us or to say goodbye to us in person. It does make you feel at home. The garden and little creek behind made the environment perfect. When we had breakfast, we could see sunshine in the little garden. And it is beautiful.
