We had a great time at the Alpenroyal. The property was clean and beautiful, the spa was amazing. The staff were friendly and helpful and breakfast was delicious. Location was perfect - the elevator was a surprise and helped getting around and our view was perfect!

The bathrooms were slightly outdated, it was hard taking a shower with a shower curtain without having the water spill on the floor. The room was spotless, and the cleaning crew did an amazing job every day cleaning the room. Location was very central to the lift and the center of Zematt. I felt that charging 5 CHF for use of the microwave was excessive as well as 3 CHF for ice. I don’t think I ever stayed in the hotel that did that. Front desk staff was very helptand pleasant. Overall, we had a very nice stay

Get a room with the view it’s so worth it. We woke up every morning looking at the Matterhorn. Great staff, nice breakfast very comfortable room, good size. Short downhill walk into town and then of course back up after dinner but so worth it for that view. There is an elevator a bit further up the hill you can also take. Hotel has a jitney for your luggage.

Please notice, they have a shuttle from the train station, take it otherwise the walk up is crazy up hill, they have secret lassage to the downtown area which is awesome. Very friendly staff. One thing i did not like knowing that yes the area is crazy safe is that they leave the hotel open 24 hrs no one at the front desk as of 8pm and they tell you to just leqve your key hanging at the reception not protected. Nothing happened but it was still a little concerning

I brought my mother and father and it was my responsibility to find and book our stay and this hotel made me look very favorable in their eyes. This place is a magical paradise. You can see the whole city of Zurich from your room. Plus, Matterhorn is right in front of you as soon as you walk out to your balcony.

This is a nice hotel up on a hill overlooking Zermatt and the Matterhorn. They offer a pick up service from the train station and an elevator to get you down to river level from their high elevation when you want to walk to town. Convenient to downtown attractions. Good breakfast options and nice staff. Not much in the way of food during the day (Early June 2024). Perhaps it has more options when tourist season is high.

Easy access to/from the train station, village center and ski lift/slope. The breakfast is excellent with many options to fill up on for a day on the slopes. The coffee machine is exceptional. I enjoyed the hot tub / steam room to relax after a day on the slopes. The staff is friendly and helpful. As a solo traveler, it is great to have the option to select a smaller room and smaller bed at a good price point.

The property is not located in the most convenient location. During our stay there was tons of construction around the roads and town. The lift to the hotel was closed from the street access, making it extremely difficult to get to the hotel fir check in with luggage. The taxis are very expensive and twice eere unable to bring us to the hotel entrance. The hotel is very dated in the rooms. The furniture and interior of the rooms is extremely used and cleanliness is below average. It has a great view from balcony, but I think you can find the same view at a better hotel.

Amazing staff and location. A little bit dated, but that kind of added to the charm. Very clean. Would definitely recommend paying slightly more for a view of the Matterhorn. It is a bit of a trek up the hill and we were out of breath every time we returned to the hotel. Probably good to walk off the fondue though. Taxis are readily available.

This property is located uphill in the city of Zermatt and walking up to the hotel is somewhat hard. The hotel provided a free shuttle from and to the train station which was very helpful. Our room had a direct view of Matterhorn peak which was a plus. Breakfast was great too.

Beyond their service, I was at the room my wife went to town centre and lost it back to hotel and had a tripped, she sent me me a message her whereabout but run out of battery. difficult to understand the message of my wife. I couldn't find her, and I went back to hotel and asked to Monica, and she's about to finished her duty, we went together she said do not worry we can find her even your gave a wrong spot. brilliant we found my wife. when we check out I have to leave early in the morning drive to Venice, Monica prepared me a pack of breakfast and gave me some 3 souvenir items from hotel for free. it was wonderful experience. thanks all the staff.

The hotel is excellent. There is elevator to the ground. Perfect location, 1 minute walking to Sunnegga station, 5 minutes walking to Zermatt train station and has bus directly to glacier paradise. Very clean. We have Mountain View room so watching Matterhorn sunrise is a plus.

Amazing view of the Matterhorn
I loved this hotel, not least because of its links to the history of Zermatt and conquering the Matterhorn. We had an amazing view of the Matterhorn from our balcony and bed. I spent hours just sitting staring at the mountain. Loads of choice for breakfast, and food was available in the evening - not a full restaurant, but enough for what we were looking for. They also had plenty of choice of non-alcoholic beer as hubby is a non-drinker. The staff were amazing, and really friendly. The hotel was a little further out of town than we realised, but there was a lift and tunnel that meant we didn't have to walk up the hill too often. The hotel offers a taxi service to / from Zermatt station so don't make the same mistake as us and pay for a taxi!

We called the Hotel and the amazing driver brought us our bag immediately with one minute to spare before our train left. Needless to say it was top notch service. We could've missed our train and have had to wait another 30 minutes for the next one. Thanks to this team!

We were given the only room without a view, even though there must’ve been other ones available too. The lift to town is only open from 08-17... when nobody really needs it. And the sauna and spa is open until 19. That was challenging when going skiing.

We arrived by train and inquired at the Tourist Office as to how to to get the hotel. The clerk called the hotel and within 5 minutes we were picked up by an electric vehicle. We were a few hours ahead of check in time but the clerk at the desk checked us in as the room was ready. The room was spacious, clean and from our window we could see the Matterhorn. Upon exiting the hotel, crossing the street, there is an elevator that takes you down to a tunnel, and from there you take a short walk to the main streets of Zermatt. Breakfast was amazing.

Wow, we absolutely loved our stay at Alpenroyal. It was a tiring hike up the paved road to check in, but so worth it. We then were given a key to an elevator that easily took us down to the city center and back up.
We loved having a room with a view and balcony looking at the Matterhorn. We could easily look out the window at sunrise to decide whether or not we wanted to get up to take photos or sleep in. Matterhorn was often covered in clouds, so that view was helpful.
We had the pool all to ourselves! It as heated and the room felt warm even though it was below freezing outside. Great view of Matterhorn from the pool lounge chairs!
The buffet breakfast was just what we needed to start our day. Many juice, protein, dairy options!

Loved the carving and woodwork throughout the property. Gorgeous iron and metal work railings and door hardware. Loved the lighting in the dining area. Absolutely stunning! I had a short stay in a single room. While the room was small it had all the amenities that I needed for a comfortable stay in Zermatt. While the hotel is a little distant from the centre of town the lift access in the hotel across the street means that you can get there in a few minutes. Hotel provided a small buffet breakfast but more than enough choice to start the day. All the staff that I meet were very helpful and friendly. A great little hotel.

Overrated and Overpriced
The bright spot of Hotel Alpenroyal is the staff, who are all friendly, courteous, and helpful. Beyond the staff the hotel suffers from many ills. The tap water bottle provided in the room had mold growing in the bottom; the towels were all frayed; the carpet was dirty or stained in places; the handle on the bathroom sink faucet was broken; and there were other problems indicating a need for refreshing the property and paying attention to detail. The property has a 3 star rating but should probably be one and one-half or two stars at best. Miguel, who heads up the breakfast service and is proficient at every aspect of services at the hotel, is a superb individual and real asset to the property.

Walk to Sunnegga, Comfortable bar
This was a really nice, cozy little lodge. One of the best things was the lift access that went straight down the mountain and left you very close to the ticket windows and Sunnegga ski lift. Another was the great scrambled eggs and bacon in the morning. It's hard to mention anything negative about it. But, I will mention that the single rooms and definitely the bathrooms can feel very small, especially with the back side windows which don't bring in as much sunshine. And that as good as the eggs were, I would have liked a little variety in the breakfast buffet after the 4th day at least.

This place is quaint, comfortable and friendly. It's got commanding views of the Matterhorn, Zermatt, and the ridge roughly north of the town. It has, hands down the finest sauna I've ever been in. The sauna isn't clothing optional though, it's clothing strongly discouraged.
The breakfast here is outstanding. Nice variety of meat, cheese and bread plus the normal breakfast stuff, with good waiters that really make you feel special. The bar is also nice.
We did initially have trouble finding the tunnel and elevator that leads you too the front door. Miss that and you're facing a long walk around to reach the hotel. The aforementioned enterence is on a side street ramping up from the one that follows the river. Call, though and someone will pick you up from the train station in a little electric taxi.

Perfect location & great hotel but very thin walls
We recently stayed in room 71 which is in the 'annexe' attached to the main building. The location of the hotel, slightly out of the centre of Zermatt on the hillside, is perfect for views of the Matterhorn and gives you the feeling of being away from the main tourist areas. Guests of the Hotel Alpenroyal are also given a pass to use the 60m high tunnel/lift entrance to the Hotel Schönegg across the road, which means the town centre is easily accessible and you're not faced with an uphill walk every time you come back to your hotel.
Breakfast was excellent with a huge variety to choose from, although the 'hot' options disappeared a couple of days after we arrived, presumably due to the hotel being quiet in the off-season. The room was clean and well kept.
The only criticism I would add, and it is a serious one if you like peace and quiet, is that the walls between each room are *extremely* thin, at least in the area of the hotel we were staying. This meant that when there were guests in the adjacent rooms we could hear practically every word of their conversations (and the wall-mounted TVs), and for a couple of days there was a very noisy dog in the room next to ours (pet-friendly hotel). Fortunately we were only disturbed for part of our stay as we were there in the off-season and there weren't many people staying in the hotel, but if you can't stand noise, I'd recommend either choosing a different hotel or bringing earplugs!

We stayed for one night. The room was just enough. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good. Though the place was not crowded, we did not get a room with view of the mountain as some repair was going on. The pick-up and drop to the station was quick. Without the pick for the first-time, it would have been difficult to locate and go up the hill. One can also use local Taxis to reach.

The location of the hotel is on a hill and it is normal to utilise the lift in the Grand Hotel Schoenegg to get to the hotel from Bahnhofstrasse, the Gornergrat railway and the Sunnegga funicular (which is a few minutes away). If the card to gain access to the lift doesn't work, it's maybe about a ten minute walk round and upwards to get to the hotel.
The hotel and the room were clean and comfortable but I just wish there had been a small fridge in the room. There was a wide choice available at breakfast where the waiter was an enthusiastic presence.
I didn't use the pool or the restaurant so I can't comment on those aspects.

Zermatt during Ultraks running event
Had a short two nights stay at the hotel during the summer Ultraks event and the hotel proved to be an excellent choice. Although it appear on the map a bit far the very centre of town, there is a lift that gives superb access to it as well as the train station. Staff at the hotel were very friendly and helpful during my stay. Highly recommended.
