The monks just left , bed extremely hard . The whole place needs updating. Staff very friendly, so. Garden and pool nice , parking for car in a safe car park. Could be an amazing hotel , so unusual for an Pestana property to look this tired.

Beautifully historic location with gorgeous architecture and provenance.
Good location locally.
Lovely spacious room, very comfortable and classic in design.

Watchouts:
No USB sockets, bring a plug.
Issues with dinner service - 1 hour wait after ordering and only 8 guests in the restaurant, food good though
Hotels Reward Tiers ignored (free wine for us not acknowledged by the hotel although later removed from our dinner bill).
Gardens are very basic in maintenance that might bother some.
Loungers limited in numbers around the unheated pool.
Bathroom a little dated but not tired just old plumbing.

Would revisit though.

Tucked within the stone-clad walls of a once-sacred sanctuary, this hotel offers guests the rare chance to sleep inside history. Originally a convent, the property transitioned into military barracks after monastic life ended in 1834, before eventually being transformed into the sprawling hotel it is today.

The scale of the place is impressive—vast corridors, high vaulted ceilings, and unexpected nooks that hint at centuries past. One of the standout features is the former chapel, still breathtaking in its quiet dignity, offering a reverent nod to the building’s spiritual roots. You don’t just stay here—you feel the weight and wonder of its layered past.

Our room was modest but adequate—relatively clean and comfortable, with everything functioning as expected. While it didn’t quite match the grandeur of the public spaces, it served as a restful base.

Breakfast was a pleasant surprise. The buffet leaned into local flavors with a generous spread of breads, cheeses, fresh fruit, and warm options.

We chose to dine in at the hotel in the evening, as the town didn’t feel especially safe after dark. While the menu wasn’t overly ambitious, the kitchen put in an admirable effort, and the staff ensured we felt looked after.

In short, the charm of this property lies not in modern luxury but in its atmosphere, architecture, and authenticity. If you’re drawn to history and appreciate spaces that tell stories, this hotel will resonate with those who love character and history.

Fabulous old historic building. The staff were very friendly. Restaurant had limited menu and food was ok nothing to rave about. As a Gold VIP member I was not given the bottle of wine as a perk and I had to ask for it. Also there was no mention of an upgrade. This part of the service was disappointing.

This converted convent is a wonderplace to stay, and right in the heart of Beja. The room was very quiet; the breakfast was wonderful. Our only complaints are that the bed is extremely hard, and the room smells like an old hospital room.

As it was an old monastery, the feeling of the 750 year old is still impressive. The rooms have been modernized with individual bathrooms etc. but it still has the feel of the old original feeling with its large curved ceilings and the reception is the entrance to the old original Church.
As it is an old monastery, note that it does not look like any of the modern hotels, it is by the police station.
Very quiet in the evenings, I could hear a pin drop, I only wished I had more time to explore the whole hotel.
I will have to visit there again.

A Very Special Place

Fantastic converted Nunnery from the 12th Century—frescoed vaulted ceilings, besutiful grounds, amazing, cavernous common areas for lounging. A lovely and comfortable bedroom—where nuns once slept! This is a very beautiful, very special place. I was on a bicycle but if you have a car it is worth going out of your way to stay! Super super staff! Loved everything!

This Pousada is a beautiful hotel. Huge common rooms with rediculously high ceilings. Our guest room was a converted convent cell with a vaulted ceiling and modern comforts. The bathroom was really nice, clean and inviting.
The inclusive buffet breakfast was just as good as the other Pousadas we've stayed in previously. The staff we spoke to were very friendly particularly the young lady looking after the breakfast service and the female receptionist we met when checking out. One negative is our room didn't have an electric kettle with tea/coffee making facilities. This is common across most Pousadas I think. Aside from that, its a great hotel. Beja is very nice town with lots of history. Ideal if you want a night or two away from home or as part of a bigger trip.

Off beaten track in tastefully converted Convent

There was a EU conference scheduled the day of our departure, so the staff was stressed and extremely concerned about getting us out of their way. We were informed of this in advance and we decided that it wouldn’t take away from our plans. Neat place in a very typical Portuguese town. That’s what we were looking for.

Portugal -where time has passed by.

We were on a “voyage of exploration” to experience inland Portugal. It is a poor, sad country. However, the Pousada itself was most comfortable, and the service was impressive. We were upgraded to the Royal Suite for a very small additional charge, and the dinners in the restaurant were fine. The wines from Alentejo were well chosen and fairly priced.

Beautiful little jewel in Beja.

This hotel is an architectural gem. The common spaces are vast, perfect for a function or wedding, with many smaller rooms for reading, resting, or sipping a drink. Though we did not have time to enjoy the outdoor spaces, they look equally well appointed, including a pool. The building and all of its amenities, and the very warm and competent staff, made for a lovely stay. We only wish we had been able to spend another night or two.

Lovely oasis in the heat

Delighted to find a rather extravagant, cool and welcoming accommodation after a hot walk up the hill, in a place, where we were not sure quite what to expect - a big relief. The pool was a welcome bonus and very much appreciated. The staff were welcoming and helpful. A special thank you to the very kind gentleman on night duty at reception who helped me out when I ran into a bit of trouble with a 'lost' husband!

A 24 hour escape in Beja

A very warm yet professional reception. The hotel is very grand of course, and it is a pleasure just to roam the various hallways and public rooms. A very good breakfast as well. The rooms are a bit Spartan but you have to remember that it was a monastery. Wish I were there in the warmer months to enjoy the beautiful swimming pool as well. All in all, a very enjoyable stay.

Big hotel sounds like a Parador but isn't.

we stayed at this hotel thinking it would be on a par with the Spanish Paradores, the rest may be but this one isn't.
The building is very big. The public rooms are massive, so big that you feel a little overwhelmed by the space. Our room was quite pokey but adequate.
We made the mistake of eating in the hotel. The food was really poor and not cheap. The waiter said that the food was typical of the region - if that's true I'd take a sandwich.
Breakfast was excellent and the staff were very helpful. There is a bar but to get the barman you have to call him on a phone and wait for him to arrive.

Beautiful Historic Building

This former convent is saturated with history and beautifully restored so that it is perfect for a modern traveller who loves the old but likes the conveniences and luxury of 21st century life. We slept in a cell with a gorgeous bath attached and outside the spacious old hallways of the comvent. Excellent breakfast in the vaulted ceilinged dining room.

We wanted to see a little of central Portugal so Beja was very convenient. Location of Pousada was very handy. We went up to Evora for a day. Well worth a visit. Although very hot the hotel was cool, and air con worked well. The pool and surroundings were well looked after. Meals good quality, sewrvice excellent. Eating outside was bliss at night and for breakfast, despite the heat as it was well shaded.

Lovely hotel. Nice outdoor pool area. Very nice included breakfast and service. We had dinner there one Sunday night in the beautiful dining room because everything else in the old town was closed. We really enjoyed it. The only negative comments would be the throw rug on the floor looked worn and soiled and the grout in the shower could have been cleaned better. Not too much to do in Beja but a very pretty area.

My first pousada

I've always wanted to stay in a Pousada or Parador and this one was handy and under 100 euros a night so I thought I'd treat myself. The room was comfortable but nothing special however I suppose you pay for the beautiful setting just as much. I did enjoy wandering through the quirky lounges, chappel and out to the swanky pool however some of the guests did make the place seem like a retirement home. There was no chance of an early check-in but staff did store my luggage. I had an early train to catch in the morning so missed breakfast, which was not listed as included but was. A shame as the dinning room looked great. Probably not worth the money but a good experience all the same.

Another unique accommodation

We have just returned from a month in Portugal, having stayed at four different pousadas. It was always exciting to see what each of our bookings had in store for us. This one did not let us down, nor did the others. The pousada is right in the centre of town so there is no need to use your car while there, as the sights are all within walking distance. The front desk staff was very friendly and willing to answer any questions we had. The room that we had was very quiet and comfortable. There are many different areas in the convent to sit and reflect on the history of the convent. The breakfast was delicious and served in a very lovely dining room. Wifi is available in a cosy room on the main floor.

Ideal base for exploring the town of Beja

Beja is a charming provincial town with much to recommend it for a short stay..we were enroute from the Algarve to Lisbon and spent a night here and one in Evora. We found the Pousada staff helpful and informative, the atmosphere of the hotel was peaceful and calm and we felt at home there. Parking was easy enough behind the hotel, the breakfast was fine with various local specialities, and we had a comfortable room. We chose to eat out for dinner but the menu looked interesting, though bar prices seem a bit high.....we would definitely return and stay in other Pousadas based on this experience.

we chose this hotel on the basis it was in the middle of the town and had on site parking. we were very favourably impressed with the hotel. Breakfast was a good choice of cold meats, cheeses, cake and cereal and hot of bacon, small sausages and egg. The staff were friendly and very helpful. The situation of the hotel was even better than we had hoped for being on the edge of both the shopping and historical areas. Plenty of free parking at the rear of the hotel made it very easy.

We had a short but nice stay at the Beja Pousada. The rooms are large and clean and the pousada itself is pretty stunning. I read that the furnishings were dated but we did not find this to be. It isn't a \"modern\" hotel but the furnishings fit the surroundings. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom spotless. The pool was broken when we were there but we didn't plan to use it. It is super close to the attractions of Beja

Pousadan ligger i en storslagen, fantastisk byggnad i en vackert bedagad liten stad. Rummen ligger i de gamla munkcellerna. Fint inredda men kanske lite dystra, med sina små fönster. Sängarna var alldeles för hårda, en bäddmadrass skulle ha behövts för våra svenska ryggar.

Helt fantastiskt från personalen till lokalen. Hotellet är ett gammalt kloster med en bibehållen känsla av lugn. Dessutom finns allt en modern resenär kan önska sig.
Personalen var helt fantastisk. Från Ines på frukosten (som var väldigt bra) till Ines i receptionen. Personalen var överlag professionell och trevlig. Men de två Ines var ett strå vassare. Deras leenden och uppträdande var otvunget glatt och gjorde vår dag.

Sejour dans un lieu chargé d'histoire et dans un cadre
Tres calme pour etre situé a l'interieur de beja. Visite de beja a pied depuis l'hotel sans efforts. Eau de la piscine un peu fraiche a la mi octobre.

Fantastisch verblijf

Fantastische poussada in het centrum van Beja. Het hotel is een bezienswaardigheid op zich en is prachtig gerenoveerd. De kamers zijn uiteraard niet super groot, maar beschikken over alle voorzieningen. Goede airco, mini bar en bad/douche combinatie. Prima ontbijt. Het avondeten en de wijnkeuze zijn voortreffelijk. Aan het zwembad is het aangenaam relaxen.
