It was lovely and memorable and we truly enjoyed our stay and visit. The property's location is amazingly breathtaking, the staff attentive and professional and the food was wonderful. The breakfast buffet provided a variety of delicious bites for a diverse palate. Strolling or driving around the town was fun with something amazing to discover at every corner. Although the heating system didn't work too well and the windows weren't able to close efficiently, it was expected and managed by drawing the curtains closed. The room had some dust and cobwebs along corners, window sills etc., but it's a historical place, so again, expected. The bed was very comfortable and there was ample space for storage. We wished we stayed a few more days because it was worth the experience. The views from the room were magnificent. A bottle of wine was provided and that made for a sweet souvenir. Thank you Pousada Castelo de Estremoz for an unforgettable accommodation.

The views & the decor are absolutely beautiful - feels like a castle!

Beautiful historic hotel . Rooms could do with electric outlets next to the beds and bathrooms could be updated. The service is bit too formal- when we requested a dinner reservation we could not get the time we wanted and when we arrived a half hour after our requested time there were only two tables taken- it was empty.

Location was great and castle was neat to stay in. Make sure you book a 2nd floor room as they have individual air conditioning. 1st floor does not. We asked to move rooms from 1st floor to 2nd floor as the first room was hot. They were able to accommodate us. Breakfast was also very nice. Easy parking at hotel. Easy walking into city with lots of restaurants there. I would stay at this hotel again.

Amazing experience in memorable hotel

We really enjoyed our stay at the Pousada Castelo Estremoz. It's in the old town of Estremoz on a hilltop: you drive through an arch and over a drawbridge, up cobbled streets to a square where there's free parking.

The hotel certainly has a wow factor: it's like stopping in a museum with many historical items and paintings set in grand rooms.
Our room was actually quite small and the bathroom tight but had everything you needed although getting things like extra drinking water was not so easy.

We ate in the restaurant - nice food and certainly grand if not a little formal for us.

Breakfast was quite simply amazing - so much choice and all really good quality.

l loved our stay - the odd quirks of staying in a historic building are massively outweighed by the amazing experience and I would highly recommend the hotel.

Our two nights here during a two week road trip around Portugal went by far too fast. One of the coolest places we have ever stayed in. The drive up to the castle and over the draw bridge was unreal (with plenty of space to park near the entrance of the Pousada) and being able to climb up the old worn marble steps to the top of the castle and peer down onto the town below through the crenels was other worldly. From the staff’s kindness, to the views from our room, to the reprieve from the Alentejo heat in the pool, and the beautiful antiques lining the halls, we gladly stepped back in time here. Providing the best of all breakfast buffets we had along our trip, we were overwhelmed with fresh, local breads, meats and cheeses among a host of traditional hot foods and sweets. And having dinner in the enormous dining room with only two other couples made us feel like royalty, although we felt unworthy of such attentiveness the staff provided, along with an amazing, traditional Alentejo dinner. A grand sense of solitude was underscored by the cool dense fog that rolled in both mornings when the local roosters would sound off. This was our home base for a day trip to Évora and a full day of exploring the town of Estremoz (check out the Azulejos museum!!) and we only wished for more time in this rural gem, packed with so much history.

What a wonderful experience. The setting is magnificent. There is beautiful furniture and art everywhere. The service was excellent, the rooms very modern and clean and the dining was first class. I had mentioned on my dinner reservation that it was my husband’s birthday and the waitress brought us a complimentary glass of bubbly and wished him happy birthday - very nice touch! Would highly recommend.

Stayed two nights and we were royally treated to a huge suite with a living room. The staff went out of their way to book restaurants and tours for us. We were made to feel very welcome.
Parking was close, and free, outside the front door. The castle is filled with incredible furniture and antique paintings even in our bedroom. It has been well refurbished into a unique hotel with the feeling that you’ve stepped back into the 17th century. We walked up the stairs to the top of the tower, and had amazing views of all of Estremoz. The breakfast was the best we had throughout Portugal with an amazing variety and endless food. We also had dinner there which was superb. Great value all around. Do not not miss this rare experience!

An absolutely beautiful and authentic place. The best Pousada in Portugal, I believe. Great breakfast and bar area, but sad that the restaurant is closed during dining hours. Also, hard to climb the hill on foot from Estremoz if you didn't come by car. Only problems with the room itself were the hard bed and one of the shower attachments didn't work well. But the incredible historical beauty of the place tends to overshadow the problems.

Great tower, but management be more hospitable

This is a lovely property in the center of the old walled part of the city. The highlight of the hotel is surely the tower from which you can view the sorrounding countryside. However, we were not impressed with how we were treated upon checkin. Although we had made a reservation for a room with a single bed more than a month in advance, my wife and I were told by the front desk that two large groups had recently checked in and that there were no such rooms available. Instead, we were given a room with two small (children’s) beds and made the stay a lot less romantic. Later, we discovered that one of the large groups had not yet checked in so we felt mislead and that management prioritized the larger group over us. This surely reflects the poor hotel management and a general lack of hospitality. Our only other complaint was that the bartender could not mix standard cocktails and seemed more adept to just pour beer and wine. The walled part of the city is interesting, but the rest is rather quiet.

Only Place to Stay in Estremoz

This pousada in the castle above the city is the only place to stay to see the area. Hotel is in great shape with amazing views. Be sure to climb the tower for a 360 panorama of the area. Also if you ask at the church you can get entry into the chapel that was part of the castle. It is worth the effort. Hotel restaurant is good and there are many more available within a 10 minute walk.

Of course, a very beautiful hotel in a historical building. However, a hotel can not survive on the building only it has to give excellent service to.
The reception is perfect!
The restaurant can be approved by some more international dishes as sole muniere and veal escalope. And sorry to say, he service can be approved to.
Since the alternatives for eating are none in the area this reduces the points for the hotel.

Estremoz is a beautiful little town/village which can be walked around in 1-2 hours. The Pousada hotel is on the hill in the castle providing a beautiful view of the surrounding area/village from there. The walk up to the castle and the hotel is a beautiful one as well. The hotel itself is very well maintained, has a pool in the back courtyard. Breakfast is included but it is average. The best part was just roaming around the castle and enjoying the charm.

Extremely nice welcome and explanation about the hotel facilities- the best we have had during our stay in Portugal. Very impressive building and impressive interior - lots of antique furniture and objects d’art. Charming staff. Our room was comfortable and a reasonable size with a settee, two arm chairs and coffee table in addition to the normal bed & television. Our bathroom was rather cramped and would have been better larger (a dedicated shower rather than a shower over the bath might have been better!) the carpets in places could have been less marked. But these small things aside, a super hotel!

Loved the experience in staying in this Possada. The staff was welcoming. The room was clean and comfortable. Great amenities with pool. Breakfast, excellent. However, dissapointed that their award winning dish which they promoted was available in very limited quantities (ran out 15 minutes after opening). Not cheap place to dine and also have to choose something we had not planned on. This should not happen.

Won't be disappointed staying here!

There are lots of good things about this pousada. It starts when one enters the door and is greeted by friendly and outgoing reception staff who genuinely desire to make you feel at home and attend to your needs. It's situated on the top of a hill with great views and ample parking. Wifi was available in common areas and worked fine. The pool needed a daily cleaning that did not prevent us from swimming in it. They assisted us sort out some conflicts in tour schedules we had that commanded a lot of assistance which they provided with grace. The only issue is they have too few staff. It's as if 3 people had to do everything (reception, luggage, bar service, pool service, etc) meaning that one often had to go to the reception desk to get drinks (if at the pool or bar) or towels. Sometimes the reception desk was vacant because they were busy doing other duties. This is the only reason we rated it a four instead of a 5.

First time staying at a Pousada and will not be the last!! Loved everything about our stay. Staff was exceptional from the front desk to the restaurant and even the service staff!!

Must do's:

Climb to the top and I mean top of the tower, sunset is amazing.

Tiago Cabaco winery-private tour and tasting. Blog wine is outstanding.

Restaurant inside the Pousada outstanding as well as the inside just outside-Santa???? ( owner is the mother of Tiago who owns the winery).

This beautiful old castle which we visited mid February was absolutely gorgeous with very helpful staff.
Unfortunately the superior we paid for did not have any heat or hot water when we arrived around 3pm. We told the front desk and they promised to get it fixed. After dinner we still did not have any heat but they managed to find a very older heater which helped a little. Unable to shower as the hot water problem had not been resolved.
The next morning still no heat but we did have hot water to shower. The room also smelt of food from the kitchen
The breakfast bacon and eggs were very cold.
Quite disappointing.

A unique and fun experience!

How much fun to stay in a castle! In the off season during the week there was only one other guest therefore it was very quiet. So much fun to explore the grounds. The service was good, the food was great and the recommendation of the tomato soup was appreciated. So different, the flavour and taste was amazing. A wonderfully puréed bowl of goodness! There was a small shop just outside the pousada that had great olives, cheese, wine and amazing chocolate torte!!! Highly recommended. If trying to find by GPS it was a little tricky. We had a different name compared to the one in the GPS. (Use Rainha Santa Isabel not what Expedia uses). The roads are especially small so hopefully you will have a small car.

This was a magical place to stay. We stayed here on our honeymoon and it was one of the most memorable moments of the trip. It's a castle atop the hill, overlooking the town, and we truly felt like a king and queen! The food was excellent. Very romantic, grand, elegant and a very unique place to stay.

We stayed 2 nights. Beds and room were very comfortable and quiet. We ate at the restaurant both nights, wanting to make the most of our beautiful surroundings. Service the first night was exceptional. The soups were perfect ( as we both had colds) couldn't get through second course. We really felt at home.
We had also previously stayed at Pousada de Obidos, from same chain, which was also a wonderful castle experience.

A magnificent palace

The hilltop location, the quality of restoration, the large rooms overlooking the town and surrounding countryside, and the thoughtful and impressive room furnishings of this magnificent palace hotel are reason enough to travel out of one's way to visit Estremoz. Although the hotel is somewhat removed from the center of town, it is really self-contained and both dinner and breakfast at its restaurant was excellent (as was the restaurant service). The pool, too, is pleasantly located and just large enough for lap swimming. Our only complaint was that the bed was a bit too firm. It would be nice to have a few rooms available with slightly softer mattresses and twin beds.

We enjoyed an afternoon drink in the open air courtyard and we were fully sated by the wide variety of breakfast foods. Breakfast was great - a good selection! We didn't have dinner. Our room was wonderful - just what you might expect in a castle with a great view despite the fact that it was raining a lot! All in all, it was a stay to be repeated as we would like to explore Estremoz a little more and enjoy some more time at the castle!
