Very interesting place. We spent one morning just going around the building and reading about its history. The problem here is the expectations they create. This is not a luxury hotel with haute cuisine. It's a simple accommodation in a historic building, and if they had set my expectations accordingly I would probably leave a better review. It's worth visiting, the staff is nice and we enjoyed our time. Just don't expect a luxurious experience with exceptional food, because that's not what you'll get. Our bathroom had a leak, the shower head was tilted in a strange way, and there was a pistaccio shell on the floor of our suite's living room from the day we arrived until we left, despite daily cleaning.

The overall experience at the Hotel Convento de São Paulo was good but we were really disappointed and almost ready to cancel our entire stay from the first room they gave us.

We booked the Suite, Annex Building (Fonte (outside the Main Building)) and what we got was nothing like the vaulted ceiling room we chose when booking.

The room 314 we got should be condemned for having a serious mold problem and was extremely uncomfortable to breath in regardless of trying to air the space out with the windows open. The sheets literally felt damp to the touch as if they either hadn't been dried properly or the dampness of the space was affecting them. The bed was not the double/queen bed shown in the pictures either. We were shocked that this was what we were paying $150 usd a night for in the off season.

If we hadn't gotten there so last the first night from our long drive to the hotel we would've gone to the front desk right away and had the room either changed to our great inconvenience after un-packing.

The next morning we brought this to the attention to the staff member at the front desk who then switched us to the correct room that we booked and from there on out we were extremely happy.

The claim made by staff is that there are many rooms (11 different options). There is only 1-2 pictures of the rooms yet nearly 100 of the property grounds... Very misleading and should be improved. Again, we were happy with our correct room but what a hassle it was at the start.

Hotel was very quiet and isolated but very relaxing. The choice of pools excellent. The breakfast and evening dinners were great. Plenty of history attached to the hotel and the art, tiles, mosaics, etc were magnificent. Even had the pleasure of chatting with the owner about his wonderful hotel.

I was reminded that my quarters is not in the main building. Even though it wasn't in the main building, it should have been clean. The curtain over the bathroom window was see through and I hung the hand towels over it. The foot rugs by the bed were not clean. The staff equipment door was next to the room and 2:15am I heard loud talking for 10 minutes each of the two nights. The caulking in the bathroom made the place look shoddy and needed to be replaced. I was told that my quarters was not in the main building and I didn't think it met a poor quality room. The breakfast buffet was excellent.

Memorable location

Amazing building, very tastefully renovated, it was a privilege to stay there. Very interesting to walk through with the written guide provided providing histoey and facts. Dinner and breakfast in the cloisters a lovely experience especially as extremely hot during our stay. Beautiful breakfast.

A beautifully quiet hotel.

Beautiful old convent in a lovely, rural location. Very quiet and tranquil, which we like but don´t book this hotel if you like busy places! The buffet breakfast was standard fare, nothing special. The restaurant however was excellent, the food well presented and delicious. As the Convent is quite remote it was very convenient for us to have a good restaurant on site so we didn´t have to drive. The reception staff were very helpful. We had booked a suite, which although not inside the convent main building, was just outside the main entrance door so we didn´t have to walk far for breakfast, etc. The suite had plenty of room, a lounge with a wood burner, a bedroom with aircon and bathroom. The furniture was in keeping with the style and age of the convent. One criticism is the bathroom looked a little tired and could do with updating... and a decent shower installed. Wifi is strong in the main reception areas and on the terrace but there was none in the suite. It was a lovely place to stay and would book this hotel again if we were in the area.

Amazing old convent on hillside with great views

We enjoyed our 2 nights. We had a room in the annexe which was adequate but not palatial. The grounds were spacious with nice pool, Service for drinks and snacks all over the site was excellent and restaurant was fine. Fairly remote location so you need to drive some way for places of interest . Evora was worth a day's visit.

Oh. This is unexpected hard to find without GPS but what a n experience to stay in a old convent with all its beauty in tact. Lot of old tile work. The beautiful setting on top of the hill and good wine and dine experience. It is one its own with nothing much around than nature.

Heaven in the Hills

What a wonderful find! A caring and attentive staff that went above and beyond in all aspects! We arrived on a stormy day to a warmed room; our vegan diet was creatively and lovingly prepared each morning and evening! Best vegan yogurt served anywhere! Staff took personal time to show us the new kittens, share aspirations and dreams! The surroundings are a feast for the senses: orange and lemon blossoms, wild lavender, roses and the green of olive and cork groves! A wonderful retreat after exploring Évora and megaliths! Blessings to all at Hotel Convento São Paolo!

Nice 4 start hotel in an XVI century convent converted into a charming hotel. Rooms are nice, good sized, clean and quite. Breakfast and food at the restaurant is OK. Really quite and green area and property around. Ideal to discover the region, not staying in one of the towns.

A good choice

Once you have your GPS positions placed and know that Aldeira da Serra is a town not a road you will be able to relax in this beautiful hotel. The history and renovation of the buildings are outstanding. The rooms were located in the main part and in various annex buildings (where we stayed). They are clean and comfortable. The dinner meal was tasty and professionally served. The breakfast was outstanding (free with our reservation -as is the parking.) WiFi is also free but we could only access in parts of the main building but the best reception is at the swimming pool. We enjoyed this choice.

The most beautiful, atmospheric hotel

Cannot recommend this hotel highly enough. It is stunningly beautiful, restored with care and totally luxurious with its two beautiful swimming pools and other facilities. We stayed in one of the less expensive rooms in the annex but found it extremely comfortable and incredible value. The staff on the front desk were courteous, welcoming and extremely helpful - we particularly appreciated our map and information to facilitate our tour of this fascinating old convent.

Book this hotel, it is a truly amazing one-of-a-kind experience.

Part museum, part hotel.

It is unusual, like a step back into a prior century. The lodging buildings are the quarters used by the monks for the centuries it served as a monastery. The walls throughout contain dedecorative hand-painted tiles. The two lounges for guests were roomy and comfortable. The large fireplace in the upper lounge was ideal for late evening reading or web-surfing. The bartender, attired in a tuxedo, served us cocktails as we lounged into the late hours. The fine acoustics in the main chapel were apparent as we listened to a world famous cellist practice for an upcoming weekend exhibition of centuries old decorative tiles. The breakfast was great. This is not the place for the traveler accustomed to the new and modern.

Extraordinary facility

This is a once in a lifetime place. It is actually an enormous museum/ex-monastery. The meals were heavenly and served in two gorgeous rooms, one the ex-refectory of the monastery. Our stay would have been a 5 plus except that the expense of keeping all the rooms lit and maintained is almost impossible, so sitting rooms are usually dark and cavernous feeling. Still, this is a memory we will keep forever.

Wonderful Retreat

My wife and I spent one night. It is a very large facility (especially for one with only 41 guest rooms) with many interesting public spaces. The re-use of this former religious facility has been thoughtful. We would return for a short retreat, as it is removed from nearby distractions. The website for the hotel is quite good, but only an actual visit can let you learn how wonderful a place it is.

One night at the Convento

it has been a most pleasurable experience. The hotel is located in an isolated area of Alentejo and is surrounded with beautiful landscapes and nature.It has been modernized while at the same time preserving the cultural identity of its medieval origin. Its numerous Azulejos are spectacular. The food at the Ermita restaurant is also quite sophisticated. I would recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to discover a side of Portugal that is off the beaten track.

Genuine historic site

One of the most interesting places we have ever stayed. The management has succeeded in providing the guests with all necessary comforts while still maintaining the character and original state of the property. Staff very helpful. While applauding the use of the low energy light bulbs, I found that the ones in the bathroom were so low that it was difficult to apply makeup, etc. Breakfast was satisfactory but did not provide a lot of variety.

A beautiful, serene location

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The common areas in the hotel were warm and inviting in spite of the fact that it was a cool,wet evening. The wood burning fireplaces and the comfortable furnishings were greatly appreciated. The convent had such a extensive history that it felt as though we had two experiences for the price of one.We would definitely stay here again.

The staff was very friendly and the hotel has a great location quite a bit outside the village. The place is very unique and interesting to visit. The rooms outside the main building are quite small but was not an issue for us as we only stayed one night there.

Absolutely paradisiac hotel in Alentejo

We had a perfect stay in the hotel. It was the quietest place in Portugal, in the middle of the forest, with no neighbours, 30+°, a beautiful swimming pool with a hammock and the most helpful staff ever. We could really have stayed weeks there to enjoy the peacefulness of the convent. I cannot recommend this hotel enough. Go, you won't regret it.

Splendid isolation

We had a fantastic time. The surrounding countryside is magnificent. We stayed in summer (June) when the weather was terrific, but I’m not sure we would want to stay there in the depths of winter.
My only gripe is that our room was quite dark, which you would expect in a converted monastery, but there wasn’t enough lighting to compensate.
The restaurant is atmospheric with excellent service, but we found the food not quite up to scratch. There is a small restaurant in the village just down the road (Restaurante Serra d’ Ossa) which had good food at half the price.

Great place if you want peace and quiet, surrounded by nature. We booked one night and once we arrived fell in love with the atmosphere. We extended our stay by one day. The place has history and is a very unique property. The food was average the service was great. You cannot go wrong if you are looking for a place to decompress. Also the internet works well in the common areas.

A estadia foi boa ,os funcionários são muito atenciosos e educados, o restaurante é agradável , comida boa entretanto achamos muito caro para o que foi servido
O quarto e wc são simples , poderia ter um frigobar.
Os espaços do hotel são interessantes por se tratar de uma construção do século XI , a piscina tem uma localização muito boa e aconchegante com árvores ao redor .O café da manhã na varanda é muito agradável .

Tanto o edificio como o enquadramento natural e as vistas são absolutamente fantásticos. A não perder explorar todos os azulejos do edificio e as histórias biblicas neles contadas.
O preço é excessivo para a qualidade dos quartos, em especial nesta altura do ano em que estava quase vazio.
Nos quartos é inexplicável n ter fichas para carregar os telefones junto à cama.
Bom pequeno almoço. O jantar foi muito bom mas o risoto é muito mal servido, com muito pouca quantidade.
