This is a quirky unique hotel in a fantastic location. Quiet street in a busy area.

The place is very clean and the room was huge by Japanese standards. Great bathroom. I don’t think the hotel has been updated in 30 years. It’s kind of cool— a throwback to an earlier era. Vintage. But takes some getting used to.

Free breakfast didn’t appeal to us. We skipped it.

One complaint is that the windows lacked blackout blinds. If you are light sensitive, you will want an eye mask.

Lovely, quirky hotel on a beautiful, quiet street

Quirky hotel on a beautiful, quiet side street. The location is excellent being close to the historic streets of Gion, bus stops and main roads/shopping districts and yet despite all the nearby hustle and bustle, as soon as you turn into the road that the hotel entrance is on you enter an oasis and calm and quiet.

We visited during the Gion Matsuri period and everything was within easy walking distance. Excellent nearby restaurants.

Breakfast is Japanese style and was plentiful, well organised and tasty. Be aware that there are no alternative breakfast options.

Our room was probably the biggest hotel room I have ever had in Japan. It felt a little dated but was perfectly clean and comfortable so don't let that put you off. I would happily stay here again. The bathroom was a Japanese wet room style with the shower before the bath. Works just fine but is worth noting for the benefit of western visitors.

The location is very convenient to everywhere and it’s the reason I recommend this hotel. The space of room is pretty big with a bathtub and shower room. Breakfast is traditional Japaneses style. There is a coffee area serving hot and ice coffee after 3pm. I wish there is a work table and chair so I can work in my room.

I have stayed at Sasarindou a number of times over the last 10 years, and was really surprised to see the poor condition this time. Part of what I like about Sasarindou is the retro charm, but now it seems like even minor repairs are not being made to keep the hotel in livable condition, which is a shame because the staff is WONDERFUL. We had tape covering areas needing repair, bleach stains on the carpet, a dirty cover on our couch and a large rip in our curtain. There were large cracks in the walls around the property. The mattress was also extremely uncomfortable and worn out. Our room smelled of old cigarette smoke and our friend’s room on the first floor smelled damp and “green” if that makes any sense- as if moss or algae was growing in it. Although the rooms seemed clean, I felt too uncomfortable to use the shower or leave my clothing on the surfaces.

A side note but relevant- I brought my friend, who has cancer, on this trip. Our itinerary shifted by two days due to her treatment schedule changing. Although I booked nonrefundable rooms, I figured they would be willing to shift our booking since we were keeping the same number of nights. They declined. In the end, despite losing the money for 2 nights for 2 rooms AND paying to stay elsewhere, I am glad because after the first night we were more than happy to move to a different hotel anyway due to the poor condition. I hope they fix up this hotel because it was a real gem in a very nice location.

The first thing you'll tell you is that you cannot take a taxi directly to the hotel.
They'll be forced to drop you off. Not far from the hotel, but the walkways are that of old Japan very narrow, a taxi just can't just get through.

Everything was clean and the staff was very helpful to me a foreign traveler.
They request that you remove your shoes in in the door opening and put on slippers. If your feet are smaller, then seven I imagine you'll be just fine using the ones they provide. If you're like me, however, eleven inches only half my foot fits in their slippers.
Now, for the fun part of the review, the area is amazing and they're R. Historical sites all around within walking distance of just a few minutes.
I was there over the weekend, and there were countless live performances in the parks that we're all free to enjoy.
As for food, it is plentiful and there is a restaurant every ten feet.It seems.
There is a bus stop and a subway stop. Just a block away.
If you want a tour, any place else.

This hotel is beautiful and we were very pleased with our room. The bathroom felt luxurious! We also couldn't have asked for a better location, it is in a quiet area next to a museum, shrine, and picturesque roads. The nearby park was in full Autumn colors. Breakfast was set out on trays for all guests, and consisted of traditional Japanese foods. The coffee was delicious. The staff spoke English and were extremely helpful with advice and letting us keep our luggage on site for a few hours after we checked out. We were so happy here and would absolutely recommend this hotel to other travelers.

Cozy, character, amenities and location!

LOVED this hotel. It was near the heart of the Gion district, had a cozy retro feel, a HUGE spacious room (which I did not expect, knowing Japan) with 2 full beds pushed together vs only 1 full bed for 2 people. SO comfortable and spacious. Speaking of spacious…the bathroom was huge, complete with a toilet in a separate room, and a very large room with a jacuzzi tub, traditional onsen like showering area (not a tub, but an open wet room with a shower head and a stool), AND a private sauna. Couldn’t have asked for a better stay in Kyoto. Arigato gozaimasu!

Pros: front desk and larger than average Japanese rooms. Location is excellent.

Cons: booked 3 rooms and 2 of them smelled terribly. I suspect it came from the AC units but it permeated. By the time I reached the next hotel, all my stuff had that stench on it. When we tried to swap rooms, the front desk said they couldn’t due to the hotel being sold out. At the same time, they confirmed they were smokers rooms even though we booked 3 non smoking rooms.

Would be a great place to stay for the price if they can fix the stench.

Helpful staff who look after your luggage and a little room by reception to eat your own food and a kitchen to use. We stopped for two nights but wish we would have stopped longer. I recommend.

The room deco is kind of old fashion but the room size and bathroom size are surprisingly big when comparing with the averagea hotel room size among Japan. The great budget room rate ( including a Japanese style breakfast ) and the great location ( in the Center of Gion) definitely compensating the room deco. staff are helpful and friendly. i will give 9.5 out of 10. Wow! Just wow! This was the biggest surprise I've ever had from a hotel stay. I'd booked the deluxe twin room and was expecting a small room like everywhere else in Japan. But I walked in to discover a very spacious room, HUGE bathroom with a very large tub and separate shower area, and most surprising of all... my own private sauna!
The hotel is located in the heart of Gion, but once you are in the hotel it is a serene quiet setting where you don't hear any noise from outside.
They have so many toiletries in front of the lifts for you to take up to your room, including face wash, skin lotion, moisturiser and many more. Cleaning is done every 2-3 days but they will give you clean towels and yukata every day, rubbish bins can also be emptied every day, plus they give you 2L of bottled water every day.
Breakfast is Japanese style only, which I have no problem with. It's a set where you get fish, egg, pickled veg, rice and miso soup. This doesn't really change much day by day so for long stay it does get repetitive. This might be my only grouse with staying here, as I was staying 7 nights.
Overall I couldn't be more impressed with hotel Sasarindou and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to stay in Gion, as for the price I paid I got so much. It is by far the best value I ever had from any hotel stay in Japan. A true gem!

A gem of a hotel

We loved this hotel! Super clean, right in the very heart of Gion, super short walking distance to all the main attractions and sites, the traditional breakfast provided was a huge plus, we loved it. The room was very spacious, the biggest we had during our stay in Japan. Loved the shower room with large tub and that the showering area was separate from toilet and sink. Definitely the largest bathroom we had as well. Slippers are provided and ready when you enter your room in order to keep the floors clean and I like that the toiletries are provided downstairs so you can take what you need, and leave what you don’t. Efficient and eliminates waste. Staff was friendly and so helpful. We were trying to get a taxi upon our checkout on one of the busiest days and he was determined to help us even though he was busy helping other guests check in and out. He was persistent and got us a taxi which felt like a small miracle. We really appreciated everything about this hotel and would absolutely recommend it and stay again.

Hotel Sasarindou is a beautifully maintained hotel in an excellent location with easy access on foot or by bus to many Kyoto attractions. While the building is a bit dated, I think this is charming (I only mention it because if you go in expecting it to look and feel like a brand-new Marriott or something, you will be disappointed). There is a breakfast included, and for the rates, I honestly do not think you could find a better value in the area. There are several restaurants within a couple blocks, too. The staff are very polite and professional, and this would be a great place to stay for business travel or for a visit to explore Kyoto.

This hotel was in an excellent location close to Gion and the Yasaka Shrine. It is also within 3minutes of bus stops and 4-5 minutes from the train station. Twin room was fairly spacious. Quiet hotel. WiFi was okay. We received one free water bottle (1 liter) a day which was very nice. Staff was very friendly. I highly recommend!

Disappointing Stay

The wi-fi in Hotel Sasarindou was inconsistent and weak on the first day of our stay. After we have reflected this to the hotel reception, they informed that the router in both our rooms have been stolen - how absurd is that?! Does the hotel not check that all amenities in the rooms are in order before checking in the next guests?

The room occupied by my parents was very dim and the wall light was without any bulb. Again, when we informed the reception, their immediate reply was there was nothing they could do.

It is overall quite a disappointment and we are not sure how Hotel Sasarindou got their rating of 8.3 which they proudly displayed at the reception counter.

Wasn't expecting much from this hotel. Was very surprised at how good it was. Excellent value for money.
It's a little difficult to find down the back streets if Gion, but it is in a prime location within walking distance from some good sights.
Breakfast was good. There is a Japanese selection and also bread to toast and croissants.
You get coffee and fresh orange juice. There are two little old Japanese ladies who run round frantically bringing out fresh food.
The room was a good size and comfortable, however the pink decor could do with a make over.
All in all, for the price we paid. The Hotel Sasarindou was outstanding value for money

Close to everything- really in the middle of Gion

Quiet- yet steps away the bustle of tourists on one of the most popular streets in Gion. we got a large room with a huge bathroom/bath and shower area and the beds were comfortable. My only complaint was the AC leaked on the carpet (luckily, where we did not walk) and the room would get hot and stuffy in the mornings despite the AC being on. Not a big deal though- everything else was great.

In the middle of Gion, on a quiet backstreet that was hard to find initially. But just two blocks away from Shijo dori and the heart of Gion.
Drawback was that you never felt away from tourists, since that is the heart of tourist interest.Ironically, we preferred the area around Kyoto station, because it wasn't as crowded with tourists.

This was a little hard to find, our cab driver didn't know where it was, but after we found it, definitely enjoyed our stay here. It had a big bathroom with a large tub to relax in. The rooms were spacious for Japan. The staff wasn't always at the front desk so if you needed help or anything, you needed to call for them. It seemed like an older hotel but really enjoyed our time here. I would stay here again.

Good and a variety breakfast, polite staff and closed to the main street. It is reasonable to the price and the equipment.

Because the buildings of Kyoto are very similar, it is easy to get lost at the night time. We had lost out way 2 times from the main road to the hotel at the night. :(

安価で、朝食付き、部屋が広い等ぜひまた利用したいホテルです。交通の便が良いのが何よりです。

今回は5人女性グループで宿泊しました。　部屋はとても清潔感があり浴室洗面所も広く、快適にすごすことが出来ました。アメニティも豊富、朝食もついていての宿泊で最高でした。スタッフの接客も丁寧で申し分ありませんでした。また、京都にくる際は必ず宿泊したいと思いました。

はじめて利用しました。腰痛のため、セパレートタイプのお風呂を希望していましたので、広くてゆっくり入れたのはよかったです。手すりがあれば文句なしでした。
朝食もおいしくいただきました。
また利用したいです

Hoewel dit waarschijnlijk ooit een prachtig hotel was, is er weinig aan onderhoud gedaan. Het is erg outdated, verschillende dingen in de kamer werken niet meer en je ziet dat het oud is. Het personeel is super vriendelijk en de kamers uitermate groot. Het ontbijt is 100% Japanse stijl, als je daar niet van houdt moet je echt naar een van de koffiebars in de straat.

祇園の真ん中で非常に動きやすい。
元々ラブホテルを改装したホテルではあるが
使いやすかった。
音は響く気もするが、寝泊まりするだけなので料金も安いので。
また利用したい。
