Gateway is an older Taj property that reeks of old world charm. The cottages and gardens are expertly laid out and the service is attentive. My room was well appointed but old. Overall an excellent option in the Coonoor area.

Overall it was sort of just OK stay. We selected this property since Taj brand was attached with it. Food was good and staffs were courteous and ready to help you all the time. But biggest disappointment was room that was offered to us. It was really small for 2 person and I seriously cursed myself for spending 25k per night for that hideous room. The rooms ends as soon as you enter into. It’s not worth your money. Seriously disappointed with room.

Gateway Coonoor - calm serene relaxing

Great location within Coonoor. Sprawling green property with plenty of open space , gardens and trees. Calm and serene surroundings. Food is good, overall very friendly and helpful staff includes front desk , house keeping and restaurant.
The improvements are mostly to do with age of the bungalow that has been converted to a hotel. Condition and upkeep can be better .

Stayed two nights. Loved the colonial feel of the hotel just up on the hill above the town of Coonoor. Particularly having a small study area with a fireplace. We passed on the toy train to Ooty but enjoyed a day walking up to Sims Park and then down into the hustle and bustle of the town before escaping back to manicures lawns and watching the mist roll over the hills. A jumper is really needed here in the evenings. The only disappointment was the restaurant. High prices but not high quality. We suspect tinned mushrooms was a key ingredient of our mushroom and pea curry, and my stir fried Bhindi was well over salted. Serving popadoms was a nice touch but no sauces or chutneys to go with it. And why is hot food served on cold plates? Even though I can see a warm plate contraption in evidence. Lovely dinning room but lacked any real sophistication which was a shame. Otherwise an enjoyable stay.

Nineteen Century flare, Twentyfirst Century comfor

Great hotel in the British Colonial fashion. Good views, beautiful gardens, nice facilities, helpful staff and many extras. We visited in January and each night a staff member would come and start a fire in our bedroom fireplace. Still not warm enough? Ask for a hot water bottle for your bed! The hotel is centrally located making it easy to enjoy all Coonoor has to offer.

We loved this hotel! It’s a bit rustic, but in a very appropriate fashion. If you are looking for a modern sort of stay, this place is not for you. The dining room feels like you have been transported to the 1970s. All of the staff are professional, courteous, and go out of their way to assist.

Only wish: we wished they had an area with sofas, tables and a lit fireplace in the main lodge. The fireplace they had lit didn’t have too much loungy furniture, and the one that had all the good furniture, didn’t have the fireplace lit. This is where we would like to have cocktails and engage conversations with other guests.

Tip: You are probably coming here for teas and trains, but don’t miss the food market by the bus and train station. It’s peaceful, friendly, and welcoming - our favorite food market in India.

We chose to stay here for just one night as a treat for my birthday and had a lovely time. The hotel is in a quirky old building in a quiet location and set in lovely gardens. Our room was huge, well equipped, very comfortable and with the best hot shower we have had during our travels so far. Loved the turn down service and the provision of hot water bottles. The staff were all excellent and couldn't do enough to help - including providing a surprise birthday cake when we hadn't even told them about my birthday. The restaurant food was very good and the breakfast buffet very varied and more then plentiful. A lovely break - just what we wanted.

Hotel is very well located at Upper Coonnor. Silent and exceedingly relaxing.
Rooms have a good Lawn section outside most rooms.
Staff are very polite and Unobtrusive, when they go about their job.
Front desk and F & B staff are really good. Very Polite and Attentive.
The Gen. Mgr. Mr Muraleedharan runs the place very efficiently, as do the others in his team.

Hill view hotel with Traditional aspects

The hotel was splendid, 150 years of history and Taj has maintained its rustic look. Raised ceilings, wooden floor, fire place and colonial type furniture.

Food was excellent, the only place you will get good food in all of Coonoor, Hamilton Bar serves as the local watering hole, though a little collection they have the best use of resources available. \"The Hot Toddy\" was a relish to an aching throat and a must try. Buffet had a wide spread but interestingly South Indian variants that are a delight to eat with local spices and veggies sourced. If you are interested in authentic traditional south Indian dishes (Thondaimandalam dishes), this is the place to try it. Especially, the Rasam, Kara Kozhambu, Meen Poondu Kozhambu and the railway lamb curry are the best.

I reserved the last for the best, the staffs! Ever smiling & ever accommodating. They try the best for you to feel at home. My wife had some chronic neck pain and they were regular in providing ice packs even if we forgot to ask.

Overall, this place is a hit and has many regulars, I believe they have earned a regular in us as well.

The staff here are extremely efficient and attentive. The hotel itself is a little faded but rather charming.
The driver/guide named Arul Praveen is very knowledgable and took me to several wonderful local places that I would never have known about otherwise including a very small, privately owned eucalyptus oil distillery and a temple located in the midst of a forest. He also enabled me to actually go into the fields of a tea plantation and meet some of the workers. I had a very good time here.

Best in the area!

Very comfortable and rejuvenating so long as you stay within the sprawling hotel premises. 850sf suite... vintage building... very caring staff. Very helpful Chef (and there is no where else to go for clean, good food). Besides staying in hotel - the only worthwhile thing to do in/around Coonoor/Ooty is to walk around the tea-garden trails. Very quite area. Place to go for a real break!

We treated friends to a couple of nights here as a break during their winter trip to India. They were delighted with the hotel . They said that the staff were Very welcoming . Their room was spacious with a wonderful log fire to relax by in the evening. All in all a great place to stay.

The best Hill Station Resort in Tamil Nadu!

We've been regular patrons at the Taj and this time was no different. Excellent Staff, great service, exquisite food and fantastic property. Its home away from home and at an affordable cost considering its a Taj property. Plan to stay there for atleast 3 days and enjoy the ayurvedic experience as well!

A very nice hotel, with friendly and efficient sta

This is a \"colonial bungalow\" type hotel located about 2km above the town of Coonoor, next to the Anglican Church. It has well-tended grounds and an old-fashioned, but nevertheless pleasing and comfortable central block.
Reception staff were very welcoming, and indeed the staff generally were helpful and cheerful.
Food was usually buffet style, and was of good quality, though as with other country hotels in India of this class, you have limited choice if you prefer European meals.
The room and bathroom were comfortable, though a little spartan. Everything worked.
The grounds are pleasant and well-maintained, though one had the impression that a few thousand rupees spent on replacing broken kerbs etc would be a good investment.
The manager was usually on hand, and was very welcoming and efficient. His staff at reception were also efficient and eager to ensure that requests like taxis etc were attended to personally, the receptionist coming out of the hotel to negotiate with taxi drivers on our behalf.

A plesant Stay

We can certainly recommend the Gateway hotel in Coonoor for anyone who wants an oasis of peace and quiet amid beautiful scenery. We spent two nights there in January 2013.We arrived so early in the morning that our room wasn't ready. But we were immediately directed to the dining room where we were able to have breakfast in the dining room overlooking the hotel grounds and the nearby hills, and then sit in the garden until the room was ready. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and we had access to the extensive gardens for sitting and relaxing. We had been warned of cold nights, but the room warmed up during the day, and held its heat through the night. So we didn't need heating. The staff were courteous and efficient, and made everything about our visit effortless and enjoyable. We found it easiest to eat dinner in the hotel, where the food was very good. The hotel was able to organise excursions and airport transport and attach it all to the bill, which avoided hassles with cash. On the full day we were in Coonoor the driver took us to the Coonoor railway station so that we could take the toy train from Coonoor to Ooty. (This section is diesel hauled but fun nonetheless.) The driver met us in Ooty and we spent the afternoon seeing the sights, including calling at Doddabetta, the highest point in the Nilgiri mountains. Ooty is interesting to explore, but we liked the quieter Coonoor better.

Should Have Stayed Longer

Only stayed one night as a staging post on the way up to Ooty but regret not staying longer and using this lovely hotel as a base to explore Ooty which is only 20km away. Luxury hotel which lives up to the Raj Hotels standard of excellent service and facilities, beautiful peaceful garden, great restaurant, tastefully decorated large spacious well equipped rooms and good wireless internet connection (extra charge). Around twenty minutes walk into Coonor and all the normal noise and commotion. If you are coming to see the Nilgiri Mountain railway in particular, then Coonor is the better station anyway as this is where the steam service ends. The service from Coonor up to Ooty is operated by Diesel locomotive. The most spectacular part of the line (and the steam operated rack & pinion section) is from Coonor to Mettupalayam. Coonor station in my opinion has more charm than Ooty and the locomotive sheds are there too. Thoroughly recommend this hotel for a base to explore the entire hill station area.

Great experience

A true place of peace and solitude in the ghats of Tamil Nadu. Older hotel that had been converted from a British Hillstation Hotel and it was very well done. Nice gardens, away from the town but still close enought to walk to most of the sights. Staff were very accomodating and the restaurant food was quite good. I would highly recommend this hote. Rooms large and well appointed.
