Loved our stay at Nishiyama Ryokan. The size felt just right, the ambiance was lovely, and the staff were warm and accommodating, they even helped arrange a massage reservation for me when my phone wouldn't dial out. Our room was spacious, clean, and comfortable, and the whole experience felt well worth it. We were genuinely sad to check out. Until next time

We spent 3 nights in Kyoto. Wanted a Japanese experience for lodging. Checked out Ryokans in the area. Booked Nishiyama. Our entire experience here was fantastic. The place is within 10min walk from the closest train station. The neighborhood was quiet. The staff somehow knew we were approaching and greeted us at the door. The place has been maintained very well. A peaceful courtyard with a waterfall. Breakfast was amazing. Rooms were comfortable and spacious for our needs. Highly recommended for lodging if looking for an authentic Japanese experience.

This ryokan impressed me with its charm and genuine staff. We booked a bit late so had to get two smaller rooms for our family of 4, but everyone slept so solidly. The mats/mattresses and comforters are so comfortable. My husband wanted to stay at a ryokan because “we can stay at a Hyatt anywhere in the world, let’s do something different”. We ate the traditional breakfasts there wearing our yukatas, we all utilized the onsens, the staff was incredibly helpful with calling taxis, calling ahead to a golf range, in general arranging just about anything. There is simply an endearing charm in a small business serving travelers from around the world. It feels intimate and I was never more sad to leave. Do try the matcha tea ceremony in the mornings; it was educational and my family enjoyed it thoroughly. There are some great restaurants right on the street, and it is extremely close to the main shopping streets. We walked to Pontcho Alley for dinner one night and explored the surrounding areas. Kyoto is magical and my husband, myself and my 2 sons highly recommend this ryokan. I would definitely return.

This was a very special stay for us. Anyone going to Japan should spend some time at a Ryokan. This one in particular was spectacular. You’re greeted with a breath-taking view of the garden when walking in, the staff were all very friendly and spoke great English. The western and Japanese breakfasts were both delicious. The tea ceremony was in particular very special for my wife and I.

My wife and I stayed at the Nishiyama Ryokan for one night during our trip to Japan and we can happily say that it was one of the highlights. The room was beautiful and you get to experience what it's like to sleep in a traditional Japanese room. We got to relax in the Public bath and witness a Koto concert which was definitely a remarkable experience, at the end of the concert my wife got to play the Koto instrument guided by the musician, making an unforgettable memory. The staff from the hotel were always very nice and helpful, they gifted us a beautiful picture of us with the koto musician which was a very special present from them.
At our checkout day we got to have a delicious traditional japanese breakfast, which was a very nice experience, everything was made with care and effort, it was amazing to be able to indulge and get to know what a real japanese breakfast is all about.

Moreover we got to experience a matcha tea ceremony and see how it's traditionally made, the matcha was delicious and my wife got to try to make her own matcha tea.

We received a very nice goodbye present on our last day and when we were leaving the hotel rain was pouring and one of the staff ran out to gift us an umbrella, we are very grateful for the service and kindness from the staff.

We want to thank Nishiyama san and all the stuff for making our stay remarkable, we will for sure recommend the Ryokan to friends and we hope to come back in the future!

Service was excellent and the staff were very polite; however, overall it’s a little dated and the public bath was on the smaller side. Compared to the other hotels we’ve stayed at while in Japan, it wasn’t overly special, so it didn’t feel worth the $500 we paid for 1 night in a Japanese-style room.

Loved this ryokan. We wanted a traditional experience and were very happy. The futons were very comfortable; the amount of space was generous - four of us stayed in comfort. The \"public bath\" (separate for men and women) was great (good shower/bathtub in the bathroom as well); the morning tea ceremony and afternoon calligraphy session were enjoyable; the small balcony had a sweet Japanese garden, and a clever combination of screens and curtains made it possible to shut out the \"city\" view and still see the garden and have good light. Everything was supported - good toiletries, yukata and slippers for the bath, tea, fridge with beverages, a map of the local area and good recommendations.
The owners and staff were helpful and wonderful. My daughter's boyfriend proposed at Ginkakuji the second day we were there and they were so delighted - staff took pictures of the two of them in the courtyard garden and created a memory book they gave to my daughter with a special gift.

A wonderful introduction to Japanese culture

This Ryokan offers a thoughtful and useful introduction to Kyoto and Japanese culture.

The Japanese breakfasts every morning were delicious, and no two were the same.

The owner and staff recommended two little local restaurants that offered some of the best meals we've enjoyed in Japan.

The ryokan also offered a tea ceremony and a koto concert in the lobby.

The room was pleasant, clean, and spacious and offered lots of storage space and electrical outlets. You need to be comfortable sleeping on a futon on the floor. I wished there was a lamp as well as overhead lighting.

You'll be happy with the service if you understand that it is excellent despite the modest English language skills of the staff. But that is part of what good foreign travel is about!

This ryokan is in a wonderful location with small streets and small shops, even though it is easy to walk to many significant sights. That too gave us an experience of Kyoto that a standard guidebook could not.

The Nishiyama Ryokan exceeded our expectations entirely. It was a peaceful and beautiful space, and quite spacious. The facilities were clean and the staff were incredibly accommodating and kind. The location was fairly central, a short walk to the main tourist areas, restaurants, etc.

We participated in the traditional Japanese breakfast and it was incredible - the server and the meal were both fantastic. We did not use the facilities (i.e. the public bath), but it seemed like a relaxing and clean space as well.

We only spent one night here as we read to only spend a short time in a ryoken generally and a hotel for the remainder of the trip. However, we wish we stayed here longer as the experience was lovely. Totally recommend!!

The room we stayed in was in the traditional Japanese style but also included Western style beds and a bathroom. It was a good balance of the culture while being comfortable and familiar for people visiting from the US. The basement included a common bath area (separated by gender), which is very traditional for a Ryokan. I found it a little awkward because males in the US do not usually bathe together, but I ended up having the bath to myself and really enjoyed the space and freedom. We also met the owners in the morning over matcha and they were wonderful. The hotel is a short walk from the nearest metro station and there are a number of restaurants within a reasonable walking distance. We would love to stay here again if we return to Kyoto.

The level of service here at this ryokan was outstanding. From the moment I walked in until the moment I retrieved my bags on checkout day to sightsee, the staff really makes you feel like you are a true guest in somebody's home.

I highly recommend at least trying the traditional Japanese dinner one night during your stay. For me, it was the best meal I have ever had. Every course was intricately plated and the ingredients matched with the season as well as the region.

It was also nice knowing I could come back to my room and have tea after a day of sightseeing. If you are on the taller side like myself, just ensure you duck to avoid hitting your head on some of the beams :).

Lovely ryokan! The room was aesthetically beautiful and minimalist with gorgeous shoji screens and tatami mats and surprisingly comfortable futons! Located on a quiet street central to many restaurants and attractions. Quiet, clean and cool rooms. The staff was super helpful and friendly and most mornings they offered a class on various Japanese topics like the tea ceremony. Overall a wonderful experience at a good price. Will definitely stay there again if/when we come back to Kyoto!

What a fabulous place to stay! If you want a bit of authentic Japanese culture in one of their greatest cities I would highly recommend! We stayed in a twin room and it wasn't too bad for two burly western blokes. Bathroom is tight so we used their public baths, a must try experience!! Would highly recommend breakfast ( we went for Japanese but there is continental, it was different both days) and taking macha tea with the two locals after! Service is exemplary and they have some English too! Highly recommended stay we will be back should we venture this way again!

Great service, but more like a motel than a Ryokan

We stayed here for one night during our time in Kyoto, because we wanted the Ryokan experience. Not having anything to compare to, other than hotels of a similar price range, here is what I can say:
Pros: the service was excellent. Very friendly, super polite, totally attentive. The room itself was clean and we'll maintained, though some things were a little dated.
Cons: any areas outside the room we're very run down. Scuffs and scratches on the walls, ragged carpet and dated decor made the public spaces feel a bit like a cheap motel. The breakfast was ok, again service was great, but the dining room was also in need of a face lift.
Overall, it was more like staying in a room decorated like a traditional Japanese Ryokan, but in a building that was more like a motel from the 80's. For the the price we paid, I would expect much more.

Location: I enjoy walking it’s a good secluded location and yet pretty close to the station, close to the shopping area and tourist main attraction.

Onsen: they do have a nice onsen in the basement. It’s quite and relaxing.

Room: it’s a good size but the bathroom is way too small so we basically showered in the public bathroom in the basement after dipping in the onsen.

I would say overall experience is great.

Nishiyama Ryokan is a solid ryokan in the middle of Kyoto. It's a 5 minute walk from the subway and there's even a shopping street nearby. The cleanliness of the place is impeccable and the staff are extremely friendly and eager to help in any way they can. The only con that I can think of is that the dinner and breakfast that you order is served in the dining room as opposed to your room like many other ryokans which seems odd given how much more expensive the food is at Nishiyama Ryokan compared to other establishments.

The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The rooms were comfortable and reasonably priced for the location. It wasn't the full Ryokan experience we had anticipated as we received a Western style room, but it was a nice stay nonetheless and the staff made us feel very welcome.

You get to wear a cool bathrobe.

It's a traditional inn so its small, but it's a pretty good experience. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. They have a public bath that looks like few people use. It's pretty relaxing and part of the experience so I'd def recommend giving it a shot. If you have tattoos its no problem using the bath either. It's also very close to the Kyoto Imperial Palace and the small restaurants in the area are pretty good too. If you're not fond of small living quarters or sleeping on a futon then your better off at hotel for an long stay. However, I would still recommend to stay here at least 1 night for the traditional inn experience.

From the time our taxi arrived at Nishiyama Ryokan we knew we chose the right accommodation. We were greeted by one of the hotel staff in traditional dress and welcomed in for a tea ceremony. The rooms have a classic feel with a fantastic view over a beautiful garden with a tranquil yet quite impressive water feature (the sounds are very relaxing). The bathroom's are quite small but the rest of the experience made up for it. The Ryokan comes with male and female baths which was a nice plus and helped us relax after a long day of sightseeing. Finally the food quality and presentation was really excellent and I would highly recommend booking dinner for at least one night of your stay.

This is an excellent property, and the staff and service was amazing. The room was ample, updated and comfortable. Had the dinner and breakfast service and both were great as well. Will definitely come back to Nishiyama Ryokan on my next visit to Kyoto. Thank you!

Great hotel

Loved the hotel! The staff was kind and very helpful and the location was great. Bathroom was a tight squeeze and it was hard to move around in it and there was a curfew after 12, but luckily the staff allowed us to get out during that time. Overall I would highly recommend the place to anyone staying in Kyoto.

very helpful staff & nice hotel

staff are very patient,friendly and helpful, they spoke good english & were always there to help.
hotel has good amenities; room came with shampoo/conditioner,body wash, tooth brush/tooth paste,shaver, hairdryer,water, japanese tea & sweet. and offered free activities (we got to watch a lady prepare tea for a tea ceremony and got to try the tea & a sweet).on site public hot bath (one for males & one for females).
hotel was clean & comfortable it was a lovely experience at a ryokan.
theres a family mart 1 street away & variouse restaurants within a few min walk. a very quiet area of Japan.
I would highly recommend this place if you are going to kyoto & want a ryokan style stay.
