The location was great. The hotel downstairs was lovely and the meal was excellent. But our accommodation was very basic with hardly enough room for our luggage. The door handle was loose and some effort was required to unlock it. The ensuite was tiny. There were no other amenities in the room. A small kitchen was provided at the other end of the corridor. There was no kettle so water for tea and coffee had to be heated in the microwave. There was a small table and a couple of chairs in the kitchen. Parking was either behind the hotel, if there was room or on the street.

Do not stay here! This is terrible lodging accommodation above a pub! It's very outdated old and does not feel clean. Had a ensuite room and for the money I paid was very disappointing. When it said oh this is a pub the music isn't loud yiu won't here it. I could hear the music if it was in my room after midnight the music finally turned off!
This should be advertised that this is a noisy pub!

The room and bathrooms were to be as expected for backpacking. When I checked in I was told that I would get new towles the next day but didn't. I asked around 4pm for new towels and was told they would let housekeeping know. When leaving around 5pm I was again told I'd have new towels. When I returned around 8:30pm I still did NOT have towels and staff were no longer available as the restaurant was closed.

The staff were otherwise very pleasant and welcoming. Food in the restaurant was fenomenal! I had the lamb shank and it was my 1st time having lamb. It did not disappoint

This property's accommodation needs significant updating, whilst the bedding was clean, the general appearance of the room was shabby, the curtains were halfway down the windows, the window latches were broken, so we could not close them to block out any noise or the street lights right outside the window. The cost didn't not match the accommodation. I'm unlikely to recommend this to anyone, unless they need urgent one night accommodation and there is nothing else available.

Did not feel safe so I didn’t end up staying. There were undesirable people and the shared bathrooms made me not want to have to walk down the hall way by myself. If my husband was there I would put up with it. I didn’t realise this particular room did not have a bathroom. It was clean enough but yeah I didn’t feel safe. My key was put back in the return within 15 minutes and I left. The staff member seemed annoyed by my checking in and I was told she’s leaving in 20 minutes so if I needed something it had to be quick. I ended up on a friends couch back in Morrinsville.

Room wasn’t quite ready at the stated check in time — cleaners were still working upstairs. Also wasn’t an elevator that I was made aware of. Room was fine but had an odd smell to it, so I opened the window and turned on the fan. Communal fridge clearly hadn’t been cleaned. There was an open container of milk, crusty remains of a spill, and spoiled food. Unfortunately, there aren’t many options in town. Stayed here after an evening at Hobbiton and met several others staying at the hotel who had booked the same tour as me, so it was convenient to hang in the bar below until it closed.

There was no bathmat or handtowel, even when I asked for one.
There was also no lid on the toilet - very unhygienic.
For such an expensive room it was a real disappointment.

Staff really helpful, took us to the door to showed us how to use entry lock, then took us upstairs explaining things on the way. Also found an extension lead for us to be able to use the heater. Suggest a blind in the bathroom for privacy and keeping warlth in.

Reader you should keep looking. Overpriced for what you get. Oversold on the website. Free wifi but free to everyone close enough to the inn so you can’t actually get a signal. No tv, no tea and coffee and no hot water. We were lucky enough to get a “bathroom” in the room. The place is extremely dated. We should have looked at other options.

Expedia fell victim to a scam with the misrepresented \"Horse & Jockey Inn,\" which was not a proper lodging establishment but rather a makeshift accommodation within a second-floor strip mall converted into sleeping quarters. The room had minimal amenities, with only two ceiling light bulbs, one outlet that we could find and no bedside light. Laundry facilities were subpar, with a functioning washer but a broken dryer. Restrooms were communal, located down the hall from our room, and were dirty and moldy. The lack of basic necessities like toilet paper required direct intervention with the front desk. Additionally, parking was inadequate, and there were no elevators available.

Very basic room. Needed to request housekeeping and fresh towels. The bar downstairs incredibly noisy at night with the crowd exiting and shouting in the streets after closing making it very difficult to sleep. The cigarette smoke from downstairs also infiltrated the room making difficult to breathe properly. Friendly staff.

If you like a small room barely big enough for 2 single beds, bathroom the gents down the corridor, curtains in shreds and doesn't fit the window, above a noisy bar with music till 1 am an electric motor that ran flatout all night just outside the window then this is for you, not me never again . We found the Horse and Jockey and the town of Matamata a great base station for reaching a lot of attractions in this area. Hobbiton (Well worth seeing) only 15min away. Hamilton Gardens (well worth seeing) approximately 45min away. Mitai Māori Village (well worth seeing) approximately 50min away.
Food at Horse and Jockey was great. Highly recommended their ribs. Thursday night was Karaoke night until 11pm. Band on Friday night to 12.30 am (bring ear plugs to sleep)
Staff their are friendly and very helpful
Room was a little bit hot. Didn’t use the fan in the room. No air conditioner

Un confort très spartiate, hôtel extrêmement bruyant, des individus n'ont rien trouvé de mieux que de continuer leur soirée arrosée dans le couloir jusqu'à 2h du matin sans que personne ne vienne les voir pour cesser ces conversations de comptoir. J'étais à 2 doigts de sortir dans ce couloir pour leur dire. 2 heures du matin était ma limite. Heureusement qu'ils ont cessé à cette heure là car je pense que ça allait très mal se passer. Un irrespect total.

The advert is all lies. There was no wifi. No kid friendly area. No climate controlled heating. No cleanliness. Its above an R18 casino bar with live music all night. The heating consists of a 4 fin oil heater. The shower hadnt been cleaned. And my kids found vaping device's and used covid tests under the bed.

Do not stay here if you're planning on checking in late. I called the hotel a dozen times, no answer. I left them a message, emailed them, and contacted hotels.com and was unable to get late check in instructions despite the fact they say to contact them if you're going to check in late. I slept in the back of a Toyota Carolla because Harry Styles had the upper half of the north island entirely booked by the time I arrived and hotels.com gave me a measly $50 credit.

Check-in and check-out were quick and easy. The room was old and could use some touchups but not too bad. Fan provided helped with the lack of AC. Disappointing part was the cleanliness of one of the beds. The pillow case had hair on it and looked maybe like it was not washed from previous guest. Luckily there was another bed in the room that was clean. A lot of noise from the bar downstairs in the evening but it did not last past 12/1 am.

The shared toilets and showers weren’t the cleanest. Water pressure was terrible. And the supermarket across the road had a broken chiller/ freezer unit outside that made a loud whirring/ whining noise that would keep you up. The staff were friendly, and the location is excellent. Just need to up the maintenance and cleaning of the shower/ toilet blocks really

On arrival, I checked the (shared) gents' toilet. One was completely unusable - full to the rim! Absolutely disgusting. Reported to staff but toilet was in the same state the next morning. Never again.
