Beautiful location and lots of history. Owner is wonderful. Only down side is that we came late in the season (mid September) and some of the other dining options close by were closed. Found some good places in Stryn (30 minute drive). Loved the book of suggested hikes in the area - make sure that you follow instructions/direction carefully.

We had the most wonderful stay at the Hjelle Hotel. A must if you are in the area. The dinner each night was incredible, all food made with local ingredients and so delicious. Our 9 month old was with us and the owners went out of their way to accommodate her and provide what we needed. Also, the views from the hotel grounds are out of this world. We hope to come back one day- our stay here was a highlight of our trip to Norway.

A truly stunning 150 year old hotel with tonnes of original features. The owners were on hand the whole time keeping everything running smoothly. The view and location was a sight to behold - just breathtaking. If you want to sit quietly and read or swim, sauna or use the rowing boat it is all there for everyone. Would love to return some day for longer.

We (myself, husband and toddler) stayed for 3 nights in late May 2025. It was a last minute booking for an impromptu trip to Norway. We had no issues with late check in or late check out.
The view and setting of this place are 12/10; the pics speak the truth! It is situated ~23 min from Stryn and ~60min from Geiranger. It was an excellent home base. The grounds are well kept. We stayed in the old historic building. It was a bit tight to leave the suitcases open and walk around in The Wilhelmina suite. The balcony had an amazing view. There was a mini fridge. No safe (no hotels on our trip had a safe). The springwater bathtub and heated bathroom floors were a nice touch. The bathroom curtains were shorter than the window and also sheer. Given that a small portion of the view includes a parking lot and the cafe, we did improvise by putting decorative cushions on the window sill for our comfort.
The host was the most helpful person we have come across on a trip; he helped us make plans for all 3 days and they worked out for us. He helped us with alternative plans when it rained. We were going to run out of clean clothes and he was able to arrange laundry for us for a neglible fee. The breakfast was on par with similarly reviewed hotels in W Norway. Breakfast is held in a large food hall with views of the lake and mountains. They had toys my toddler loved. It is a beautiful family run place away from the crowds and with lots of character.

Definitely a must stay!

We loved our time at the Hjelle Hotel!! It was our favorite place in Norway. We only wished we had been able to stay longer. The location is absolutely beautiful. Nothing like looking out your window and seeing the beautiful lake and mountains. Lorenz and his staff were kind and welcoming hosts. We ate several meals at the hotel restaurant and everything was delicious. I highly recommend this hotel!

I'd have to say the setting of this property is spectacular. I was in awe soaking in the beauty surrounding us. There are nice walks nearby that allow you to absorb it all. The motel room was adequate and small but the walls were thin and we could hear the others next door. Another person staying there said the hotel rooms on the top floor are quieter. We enjoyed the breakfast and ping pong table and would love to return again in the future.

Fantastic Hotel from another time!

It was an extremely charming and historic family owned property and the owner and staff went way out of their way to make sure we enjoyed our visit and put in a lot of time helping us with our travel plans the next day. Great location for day trips!

We had a very nice 4-night stay. Lorentz was a great host. We chose this location due to its location and easy day trips to Stryn/Loen, Geiranger, Briksdalen Glacier and Lom. The setting was beautiful. We ate one dinner at the hotel and it was excellent but fairly expensive. We ate other meals in Stryn and Geiranger. Our room (315) had a partial view of the lake, but mostly overlooked the road. The room got a bit warm for us since there is no AC. We opened the windows which helped. Several good walks/hikes close to the property as well. Breakfast was very nice. Very clean rooms and bathroom. Mini grocery store 5 minutes away. The Hotels.com site says self service laundry is available but it is not. Lorenze kindly washed our laundry for a small fee. Overall a great location for day trips to common sites in this part of Norway.

The surrounding area is fantastically beautiful. Boating on the lake is possible, although we did not partake. The price is a bit high, but it is reasonable for the area. It is certainly more affordable than staying in Geiranger, which is less than an hour's drive away.

The hotel has a very historic charm, which may appeal to those looking to stay in a hotel of a bygone era. The rooms are small, and the furnishings and decor are of the antique variety.

Bonus points for being dog-friendly!

Idyllic Location

The most idyllic place from which to visit Geiranger and some of Norway's fjords. The hotel is a little outdated, but that's made up for by the beautiful setting and incredible views. Take advantage of the delicious dinners prepared by the hotel, and spend an afternoon reading a book in the back room of the Gamlebutikken!

A hidden gem... the proprietor (4th generation) was so gracious - he gave us ideas of hikes and excursions in the area - was like visiting a friend. A highlight was a 30 minute hike to a magnificent waterfall. The breakfasts (included) were awesome - meats, fish, home made fruit preserves, fresh breads, eggs, and more. They also offer a three course dinner. The experience was so good that we stayed a second night, even though we had just planned on passing through.

Litteratur på rommet « tips om hva gjøre lokalt og med bil innen en time». Rommet var rent. Restauranten hadde nydelig lokal mat. Vertskapet introduserte middagen med hva vi fikk å spise samt historien om hotellets opprinnelse og utvikling. Beliggenheten, helt ypperlig blant fjord og fjell.
