The hotel is in a lovely historic area near the Pearl river and has plenty of shady trees.
Free use of washing machine and dryer.
Not many staff speak even a little English so need to use Mandarin or a translator App.
Beautifully clean rooms and linen and towels. BYO tea bags and buy milk at the lical store if you like a good cup of English Breakfast in the mornings.

It is an antique hotel. I like the dim sum in the Chinese restaurant, the foods is nice with reasonable price. The buildings around the hotel are so antique. Make sure take as many pictures as you can.

Something you need to concern :
The subway is about 600m to 800m away from the hotel. I don't mind to walk, because I can enjoy my view around the area.

Something to prepare before travel to China:
You better download the local GPS, WeChat Pay or Alipay. (WeChat is the must).

We always like staying at the Victory on Shamian Island. The breakfast buffet is plentiful with lots of options for Westerners and Europeans. Our room was nice, but a little chilly. We couldn't get the heat to come on. Our room was also 2 floors up from the street, so at night you could hear talking and traffic. And the hallway is dimly lit, with old carpet. But that is a small price to pay for the quaintness of the island and the close location to Number 9 shopping street and the wholesale Pearl and Jade market, as well as the subway. If we were ever in Guangzhou, we would stay here again. We stayed in Victory West both times, I haven't looked at the rooms in the East wing. I am told they are newer, but smaller.

A very nice historic Hotel, ask for the west end, located in the older French concession of Shamian.
Staff is nice even tough english is difficult.
Room is big and well furnished but not properly isolated, you can hear the planes at night...

I took advantage of the 72 hour visa on my way back from Vietnam and decided to stay on Shamian Island after reading reviews. The taxi driver dropped me at the East Building and I was a little shocked that the receptionist didn't offer to arrange help with my bags to the West building (she just drew on a map and told me to walk there - which I wouldn't have minded if i didn't have 3 bags!) The West building is very dated and a bit depressing. The pool and the gardens are only accessed from the East building so I never bothered visiting. It was very hard to communicate with staff which I don't really have an issue with but it did make enquiring about tours and visiting places in the city impossible to extract information. And because the wifi is so poor it was impossible to research online. Fortunately I had booked a tour before arriving and the tour guide was excellent in providing me with information for my remaining days. Breakfast was ok. There is an excellent vegetarian restaurant next to the hotel which i ended up at every day. Starbucks for a good morning coffee is round the corner and from 2pm there is a delightful little coffee shop called Timeout that is a must visit for independent coffee and cakes. Overall I think the hotel is overpriced and definitely in need of updating.

A pleasant stay, value for money

We stayed in a balcony double room at the west building for two nights. The room was spacious and comfy, quiet neighbourhood, there was a construction in a morning but it was acceptable. Also shopping mall and the old town just a few minutes away. The wifi was good, so as buffet breakfast, even not too many choices but it was nice. I was not too happy about was the expected time of the birthday cake, I made a request for the arrival day for the birthday cake for a little celebration but it could only be arranged on the next day. It would be better if there was more privacy for the bathroom as there was only one sliding door for both the bathroom and the toilet. However, the service and the location was satisfactory and we would like to stay there again.

Location was great, close to the Metro, check in was quick and easy, I was given an \"Expedia\" upgrade, so I hate to think what room I would have been given without it! The shops & river for ferry travel were also close, quiet area with nice walking area down to the river. The Victory hotel is actually 2 hotels. I stayed in the older style Original one. The interior is becoming tired and run down. The management standards have slipped and is shown up in the attitude of staff... some are great and very helpful, others I suspect just want to be there to collect they pay cheque and are very uninterested and would rather be talking to their friends or on their mobiles. The breakfast (although reasonable cheap) was very poor, most was cold or over held, pigs feet for breakfast was probably a \"no starter\" from the beginning. There was way too much food being prepared for the number of diners, also fruit juice was supermarket brought bottled type, the option of 1/2 cooked omelette was available and was probably the best choice... at least it was hot. Somedays lots of staff others only 2. No management supervision..... I think I could have even been a better manager that what they have.... Having said that the $ room rate was good and although I would not stay here again I would consider staying at the \"New Victory\" hotel just around the corner.. This could be a GREAT hotel, it just needs some love and MUCH better management supervision.

We almost always stay at this hotel for Canton Fair. They do have a bus to Canton Fair which is nice, but does take about 40 minutes. The breakfast is HORRID at least in the west building. The rooms are always clean, WIFI is decent, the area is wonderful with lots of places to eat within walking distance.

Clean and comfortable room with good breakfast buffet. Nice rooftop pool with great view of (polluted) Guangzhou. Located on Shamian island, it was a peaceful respite from busy Guangzhou.
The 2 restaurants in the hotel were the biggest disappointment overall - the \"western\" restaurant had very little actually available, and did not serve alcohol despite bottles of liquor on show behind the bar! The Chinese restaurant was booked for a private function of each of our 3 nights' stay.

I had a massage at the nearby Traditional Chinese Medicine school - which I highly recommend.

About a 15-20 minutes walk to Shangxiajiu. 10-15 minutes walk to the nearest metro. However I wouldn't recommend walking from the metro to the hotel with an elder or a toddler as the metro exit closest to the hotel does not have an escalator nor lift.

Generally love the quiet \"estate\"! Love that there's a huge Starbucks just behind the West Building.

A comfortable hotel in quiet neighbourhood

We were pleased to be welcomed by helpful reception staff with reasonable English language skills. Our balcony room in the west wing provided peaceful respite from the traffic of the busy road nearby. A few copies of the China Daily newspaper were freely provided on each floor. The hotel is conveniently close to the Huangsha Metro station and the Shamian Island location gives insight into the history of Canton.

I was very disappointed, and extremely upset about not getting what I book for. I very much like the idea of having a balcony where I can enjoy my morning coffee with fresh air. It appeals to me immediately without hesitation to book this hotel. When I arrived at the reception desk, the staff told me all balcony room was booked out. What is the point to make a reservation then. Hotel management shouldn't think giving customers an upgrade is a bonus to their customers. Giving me a bigger room, doesn't suit everyone. I am a vegan. given me lobster doesn't help. However, the hotel is clean, and situated in a nice location. Staff is friendly too.

Hotel is located on Samien Island. Quite a nice place with european style of buildings. East building has a nice and spacious lobby. About 10 mins walk to Huang Sa station. 5-mins walk to Herbs wholesale market and 15-min walk to stationery wholesale market Yiyuan. Also 15-min walk to Shangxiajiu Lu. Hotel is a little old but reasonably maintained. We stayed for 5 nights from 4th to 10th Dec and again from 12th to 13th Dec. We had a free upgrade to business suite on our second stay of one-night. Much appreciated.

The best place to stay in Guangzhou.

I can't imagine a better place to stay than the Victory Hotel in Guangzhou. The local area felt safe and very interesting. The fact that locals come every day to take photographs in the area says how attractive it is. When a local couple are getting married they come to Shamian Island (where the Victory Hotel is) to take photos in all the various outfits they are going to wear for their wedding. The riverfront restaurants are full of fairy lights and offer a wide range of local foods. The Metro which takes you anywhere in Guangzhou is close by. There is a lovely walk around the perimeter of the island and a wharf where the various river ferries stop. We are so happy we chose to stay in this hotel.

I stayed at the West Building, which is an originally an HSBC bank started by the British in the middle of the 19th century. The building is well maintained and kept while the cleanliness of the room is good. The location is good, in an small island where you can take a walk at the riverbank park. nice historic building in shaiman island district

there is an east bldg and west bldg 2 blocks away. i was in the west bldg but my booking showed east bldg which is the main address so i had to walk back and forth between two bldgs.
reservation should clearly show if you are in the east or west bldg and not just show east bldg as the main address

The hotel looked great in their pictures but it was not quite so good in reality. The reception staff avoided eye contact and did not go out of their way to help us with our queries. There was a pool advertised but we were told we could not use it and after viewing its cleanliness we would not have used it anyway. Our room was fairly small and smelled musty and damp and we were unable to open windows to air it. The outside bar was very difficult to get served in even though there were no other customers present.
Overall, not an experience I would care to repeat.

The hotel was a wonderful surprise, as I was given a free upgrade and ended up in a large room with a king bed, couch, and desk. The bathroom was very clean and the water pressure and temperature were perfect. The breakfast room was spacious and had many choices - the one downside was the coffee. There is a small restaurant connected with the hotel provided reasonably priced, and tasty food. There is a Chinese and Western restaurant in the East hotel, which you can get a discount on the price if you stay in the West hotel. The hotel front desk staff speak pretty good English and are very helpful. Wonderful walking streets all around the island. The taxi from the airport is about 200RMB - others in luxury cars and limos will charge 350.

Comfort close to the Metro

We stayed at the Guangzhou Victoria Hotel for 5 nights, and enjoyed every moment. From the beggining the staff could not do enough for us. Most had some English, i found 'itranslate'app to be very useful. Located in a beautiful old part of the city..close to the Metro. The room was well set up, with a comfortable bed. Overall experience was very enjoyable. Highly recommended.

Run Down Hotel in a Magnificent setting

The maintenance on this Hotel has sadly been neglected and now needs an urgent make over. We stayed in the West Wing.
The carpet need to be replaced in the Hotel which is worn and dirty. The wall paper in the dining room is falling off the walls and the chairs need urgently recovering. The bathrooms/showers need re grouting as the mould has taken over. The staff urgently need management leadership as they are more interested in their phones then customers. The breakfast food was returned to service over a four day period and just reheated on each day, example bake beans which had a rim around the bowl marking each day. This is such a pretty setting to have a Hotel so we hope it can be bought back from the brink as we have stayed many times and would like to return.

Brought up to date very well. An old hotel (the Victoria) which (after 1949) became the Victory which has recently been carefully modernized and still has very, very good prices. Perfect.

Too many weird things to recommend it

First: the hotel is beautiful, in a perfect spot. I knew nothing about Guangzhou, and it turns out I was in a 19th century former bank, surrounded by other now protected buildings and centuries-old trees. HOWEVER. My room was blistering hot - it was almost 30 degrees C outside, and the temperature in my room was SET (I couldn't change it!) at 25! I cranked the fans up on the thermostat as far as they would go and it didn't help. Because the staff speak very little English (and didn't seem to WANT to understand me!) I hoped leaving the fans on in my room would indicate I wanted the heat down. When I came back after being out all day, my room was perfectly made up...and the heat was 2 degrees lower. THEN there's the restaurants. I'm single, and I travel on my on a lot. I'm used to being put in the corner in a restaurant and forgotten about. But COUPLES will also get this treatment at the Chinese restaurant -- the small tables are right up against the front window -- sounds great, right? But they're cut off from the rest of the dining room by a strange, very narrow corridor, which means the servers were constantly bumping our tables to get past. Finally, the weirdest restaurant experience of my life: my last night there I went for dinner at the second restaurant -- there were two staff, who looked surprised to see me. I learned that almost nothing on the menu was available, and the food, when it arrived was cold.

Another Day trip to Guangzhou

Needed a bed to rest our weary head - this place is far enough away from the noise of the streets to get a good rest.

Perfectly located oasis in the middle of Guangzhou

Guangzhou at the slowest of times is one of the busiest, loudest places on the planet (cars, people, and the stores where each competes to be louder than the next to attract business). To get away from the noise you need an oasis and that's not easy to do on a budget, but the Victory Hotel is perfect. Even though it's just across a canal from a super highway, it's location on Shamian Island separates it from the din, and when your room faces the other way as ours did, you have no idea the highway (or anything else, in fact) is there. The beds are big and soft, the rooms are spacious and the staff is courteous and speak enough English to make things easy. It' also just a block from the metro so the whole of the city is within easy reach.
