Selva Verda is in a beautiful location on the Sarapiqui river, slightly further off the tourist trail but a true eco-lodge. Great place to stay to immerse yourself in the Costa Rican rainforest and spot wildlife. We spotted a lot within the lodge area. I would recommend the guided nature hike which took us further into the grounds of the lodge. The guide was very knowledgeable and went at a manageable pace for our group of mixed ages. The swimming pool was good. Rooms are functional and clean and some have great views. The food was slightly disappointing but the location and experience made the stay worthwhile.

The grounds are absolutely stunning, we had a riverside room and it was pure paradise!
Extremely pleasant and helpful staff. There's an excellent hiking trail throughout the property as well as a guided tour available across the suspension bridge into the park.
Highly recommend this place for bird watchers and jungle enthusiasts alike!

Two nights ago I checked into this hotel after finishing a long white water rafting tour while on my way to San José. The property itself is pretty. It might be fine for people who want to stay on a resort property and not go out to explore the real Costa Rica.

For a one night stop, however, this was easily the worst choice of my entire trip.

From the moment I pulled into the loading area the process became ridiculous. I checked in, walked all the way to a room at the very back of the property, then had to walk all the way back to reception to ask for something closer. After that I returned to the first room, gathered my things, walked to the new room, then walked back again to return the first key. Then I had to go back to my car, drive to their parking lot, and walk all the way back through the pathways again.

It took one hour and twenty minutes just to get into the room.

Signage exists, but in several places where you actually need it, it’s missing. I constantly had to ask people for directions.

The room had no television and no refrigerator. Every time someone walked past, the entire room shook because four rooms sit on one large platform.

I also watched elderly guests and people using canes struggling up the stairs and along the long pathways.

I hated my stay here. Anyone with mobility issues should absolutely avoid it.

I enjoyed the natural setting and wildlife around the lodge, and the boat tour itself was a nice experience. However, I was disappointed by how the transportation to the boat dock was handled. When booking the tour, I was told not to worry about transportation, which led me to believe it was included in the tour cost. Upon checkout, I was surprised to see that transportation was charged separately — and at a cost higher than the tour itself. I wish this had been clearly communicated upfront so I could make an informed decision. Greater transparency about additional charges would have made the experience much better.

The staff are absolutely amazing. Really enjoyed the on-site restaurant. The lodge is in a very unique setting and is well taken care of. There are some self guided walking trails on the property, but to use the trails across the river on the other side of the hanging bridge, you have to pay for one of the guided tours. The grounds are gorgeous. It is important to note that the lodge is conveniently located right off of a main road, which is good for easy access, but we could hear some road noise throughout the night from our cabin. Hot water in the shower and WiFi access in our cabin and in common areas. Overall we really enjoyed our stay!

OMG we loved this place. Best part of out 10 day trip that included Arenal and Manuel Antonio. Great early birding tour, and saw tanagers and kingbirds from our balcony. The cabins and walkways are of beautiful wood, nestled in trees and flowers.

The property was conveniently located off a major highway. It was nice to have covered walkways between the rooms and dining area to protect from the rain showers. There was a lot of greenery which provided a safe haven for frogs and other creatures. The hotel offered a lot of tours, although some of them you had to take a taxi to get to which cost extra. They also have tours onsite on their nature preserve. It is an excellent location for birders and nature lovers. The buffet breakfast was excellent. The property is very near to the Sarapiqui River. WiFi coverage was available throughout the property. There was a gift shop onsite. Highly recommend for birdwatchers and nature lovers. We enjoyed the night hike and the morning hike with the expert guide at the lodge. It has an attached authentic Italian restaurant which was unusual for that area of Costa RIca.

Loved the covered walkways. We were literally walking in the rainforest! Breakfast was delicious with fresh fruit, eggs, bean and rice. Staff was very helpful and friendly. The room was large and clean. Very eco friendly. Ours was by the river and the sound was wonderful. My only complaint is that they claim to have a hot tub. It's there, but no heat and no jets. Should be called a small pool instead.

2 nights as part of tour but loved it so much we came back following week for another 2 nights , as a wheelchair user it was designed brilliantly the covered concrete walkways level access restaurant, so much wildlife within the hotel grounds no need to leave , so many amazing birds , to sit and have breakfast and watch the bird feeding station , a lovely idea which we really enjoyed .
The rooms are a little dated but spacious and comfortable. My partner did a walk with Randy and really enjoyed it . All the staff are so helpful we definitely return thanks so much .

Truly a Diamond in the Ruff!!

This beautiful hotel that is one with nature! We enjoyed watching an amazing variety of birds while eating breakfast. There are expert well educated nature guides employed by the hotel. We did the early morning bird walk and night walk with them on the hotel nature reserve! They were both excellent! Other excellent tours are available near by. Rooms were very clean and comfortable. Natural paradise

Loved our stay in a river room. You hear the animals all night. It's amazing!
You also here the human animal though, as the walls are paper thin between rooms.

The Italian restaurant's food was good but the server rushed us and never did a quality check. We were not asked if we wanted dessert or coffee.

The front desk clerk apologized next day and mentioned there is one server there who has had similar previous complaints.

The bird walk at 6am was amazing. Ronald took us and he found all kinds of birds, frogs and other creatures for us to see.

The river behind the property is pristine and eating breakfast watching oropendolas and other species enjoying the bananas the staff puts out for them is incredible.

The breakfast is a typical breakfast with plenty of fresh, sweet pineapple, papaya and watermelon. Oh, and the great coffee.

We didn't want to leave!

La Selva Verde Lodge.

2 night stay here in July 2015. There had been serious flooding on the Sarapaqui River the week before our stay resulting in some damage to the hotel grounds, with some of the cabins off limits and under repair.The nearby La Selva Biological Station was completely inaccessible due to flooding.
Pros: Great place for wildlife. We had 2 guided walks and both guides were excellent, but you will see lots of wildlife on your own. Food here was good. Great buffet breakfast and either Costa Rican or Italian restaurant to choose from for dinner. One of the best pizzas I have had in years.
Cons: no getting away from the noise at La Selva. The place is full of wildlife and it comes alive with calling amphibians at dusk and then with birds and howler monkeys at dawn. Add to that the constant river noise. We were there mainly for wildlife so didn't mind that. There was also much noise created by groups of school kids until the early hours and the lodge is right on the main route 4, although most cabins are closer to the river. Also workmen started working on flood repairs at 7 am both mornings. Our cabin was looking a little shabby and tired too. That said I think this is still probably the best accommodation in the area.

Great wildlife viewing with amenities

If you are looking for a peaceful place to stay in the rainforest with all the amenities at your fingertips, this is it. Spacious rooms with wide verandas overlooking the rainforest and a hammock for each room. Two on-site restaurants with very good food, pool, and both self-guided trails on site as well as guided tours. Excellent birding and wildlife viewing right onsite and staff will book tours for you. I found this place more expensive than other locations I visited but it's a great place to see the rainforest. Also, convenient hourly bus service to downtown - recommend using it and save a bundle on the expensive transportation the hotel offers.

It's a nice hotel. You live in a comfortable bungalow in a rain forest - isn't it cool? Of course, it's not the cheapest place, and they charge you for everything, but it seems to be a general tendency in Costa-Rica for last years. Good things are they have plenty of things to do, for example bird and night walks. We had Ivan as a guide, and he was great and showed us a lot of wildlife. They also have free tea and cookies all the time in the dining area, and it's pretty awesome to sit on the terrace and watch wildlife with a cup of tea. Sometimes animals come to a bird-feeder very close to you. The only annoying thing is (1) wifi is only in the dining area, not in the rooms and (2) you can hear everything in the adjacent rooms, baby cry, chat etc. But it's not a big deal.

* stunning buildings: rooms on stilts in the middle of the jungle
* friendly front desk, with good English
* good access to nearby activities

Cons:
* rooms are not soundproofed. You will hear your next door neighbors converse.
* highway cuts through the middle of the property.
* meals are disappointing. Go off premises if you have a car.

Observation:
* You will have a great experience if you get a room in a building next to river and if you have no noisy neighbors.

Get close to Wildlife

We were the only guests on the bungalow side of ride an easy 10 to 15 minute to main lodge and dining along a covered walkway. Tweeting stations are set all along the walkway so tons of easy to view birds, iguanas, poison dart frogs, spider and howler monkeys and a Coati without going on any of the many offered naturalist assisted walks which we did not have time to enjoy. Only had 1 full day and 2 nights . Staff is amazingly awesome and helpful. Went zip lining the canopy with Johnny and Jaidel (?) and horseback riding in the hills and through the rivers with Winson (?) and little Jose. We were their only 2 guests and had a fantastic time! Ask for them!

Amazing location

It was lovely to stay somewhere completely surrounded by the rain forest / jungle complete with Howler Monkeys calling right outside the window at dawn! Had a wonderful nature walk with a very knowledgable guide who was very patient and took immense trouble to ensure that I saw all the beautiful birds and frogs etc, quite the highlight of my stay. Breakfast was great, but we went to bed hungry as had not realised that dinner was over at 8pm and there was nowhere else to go. Staff on reception were excellent, very helpful;

This resort was a great place to go

We did not have much free time in Costa Rica, so looked for a place close to San Jose. Selva Verde met all our expectations. There were plenty of animals and birds all over the grounds, and plenty of planned nature walks, hikes, birding etc. Nice pool, and choices of two restaurants - one a buffet for the many kids here, and one a nice, table set not expensive Italian choice. It was convenient to zip lining (called canopy walk) and to a pre-Columbian archeological site. I highly recommend it.

Easy access to rainforest and wild life

We stayed 5 days. We liked the rooms in the bungalow, spacious and lots of cross ventilation but the walls where paper thin and families next door...also cleaning of walk ways start at 7am. Very clean every where though. We liked the DVD or lecture in the afternoon and all the birds and frogs on premises. Food was not great and dining room lights far to bright. Workers very friendly and helpful, very good, quick and low priced laundry service.

Nature lovers hotel.

This hotel has amazing grounds if you like nature. The rooms are clean and simple. No TV or AC, but I think the point of the hotel is to go explore and enjoy the lush grounds that they have to offer. They have raised walkways that wind throughout the property from building to building. You are surrounded by nature. Each room has chairs and a hammock out on the balcony for you to enjoy your surroundings. The hotel also offers various different tours in the area (white water rafting, horseback riding, nature trails, and many more.) This is not a high luxury hotel...but a beautiful hotel made with nature lovers in mind.

Great spot but ruined by big camp for kids

We went to stay at Selva Verde because I had read all the reviews saying how great it was for spotting wildlife. We did spot Howler Monkeys from a far, saw Plumed Basilisk, a Green Iguana, Toucans, the Green & Black Poison Dart Frog and the Strawberry Poison Dart Frog. However, our first day at the resort was marred by a large group of students that must have been there on school camp. We attempted to use the pool but the students didn't make space for other guests and the people that were supervising didn't help at all. You aren't allowed to do hikes across the bridge by yourself, for safety which is understandable but charging between US$20-30 each to do a guided tour is a rip off when you are already paying $100 a night. They lock the bridge on the far side of the swing bridge, so we woke up at 6am to do a hike and were unable to. We are avid hikers so we were a bit annoyed that we weren't allowed to do the hikes by ourselves. They said it was because of one tourist that went hiking by herself that got lost, but I think it is a shame that one person ruined it. Our room location was fantastic but we are a couple with no kids, and on our second night, there was a large family that were put in the rooms next to us who were incredibly loud. They ran on the boardwalks, yelled and screamed quite loudly and they woke us up at 6:00am, were allowed to continue for the rest of the morning despite my complaints. Overall I was disappointed at our stay here.

Ecotourism at its best

If you must have AC and all the trappings of modern life, not the place for you. Relaxed atmosphere, extremely helpful and friendly staff. Wonderful to be right in there with nature. Watch toucans and humming birds as you eat breakfast. Great experience. They also seem to be very eco aware!
