When I accepted the room they claimed that I had not paid even though the payment was made through the website. There was no hot water in the shower until after a technician arrived - the directions between the hot and cold water were different. The room looks very old and so does the furniture. The air conditioner dripped water, the mattress sank and would not rest, and in the middle of the night the ceiling fan's switch gave off a burnt smell. Not a good experience at all

This is a very nice beach front hotel. Popular place since 70s. Close to the city center with bus/train stations, banks/ATMs.

Turtle beach also very close, we can feed the friendly sea turtles and take photos. Kids friendly beach area. This hotel has swimming pools. One for the kids also.

Good breakfast and dinner buffet with international food items, some local items also daily. Good A/C, Hot water, comfy beds. Some TV channels with BBC. Very friendly staff!! They keep this property clean and tidy all the time.

All the guests are very happy with the amenities. Lots of repeat tourist show this place is memorable for them! We will come and stay again.

Big thanks to Front Desk staff, housekeeping and kitchen staff. Pool staff make sure all are safe and happy.

Great Value for Money!

Nice clean rooms and beautiful view. Staff were fantastic and went the extra mile to upgrade our room on short booking notice.
The pool and bar staff were fantastic.
Right outside you can snorkel in the reef.
Breakfast was a big spread.
Only minus was I had to pay a small fee to use the gym.
Highly recommend!

The hotel is dated & needs a revamp. The first room was old, musty & tired. Water marks on the walls, very tired bathroom & poor fittings. The 2nd room was an improvement on the first although dated.
Staff were friendly & amenable. Breakfast was buffet style and plentiful but lacked variety.
Pool area was clean & safe, although hogging of sunbeds started early 0600!
Overall was a satisfactory stay however there are better value hotels along the same stretch of road.

Loved the staff's hospitality and attentiveness to guests. The breakfast on the days there is no buffet consists of too much sugar and carbs. The staff needs to pay attention to have more Protein rich food items such as cheese, yoghurt, ham etc. Access to the beach is great. So sad to see so much plastic on the sea shores.

Location of the property is amazing! Its right on the beach and around the market.
The property is gorgeous and the views are beautiful. You will love the sunset. Staff is alert and very helpful.
Rooms are clean and comfortable.
Amenities can be better - dental kit was not provided, so thats something they can work on.
Overall, it was amazing & I would highly recommend to book it.

We did not stay at the property. We were refused by the hotel and informed that the hotel association of Sri Lanka had a new regulation of not letting tourists from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Thailand stayed at the property. However, they were not able to informed us earlier since Expedia doesn’t show nationality at the booking. We were stopped at the front by the security whom did not even let us stepped into the hotel. After the local driver had a talk with a hotel manager and couldn’t settle. We walked in to have a conversation but the hotel manger treated us as if they were disgusted. We were later informed that this regulation was not an official regulation by the government. It was a hassle to have to find a hotel last minute as then location is full with tourists and a lot of hotels were all booked. Despite the fact that it was already charged our credit card, the hotel refuse to take responsibility and stated that we had to inform Expedia and canceled the booking in order to get the refund.

This hotel feels like it was thriving in the 80s and then just... stagnated. The pool is fine - nice, actually - but only 'opens' at 8am. But that's it. The towel provided was threadbare with a huge hole in - the guy in charge of supplying them was almost flat on his back with his legs spread up against the doorframe - a lovely sight to walk into. The security guard at the gate towards the beach was LOVELY.
And then.
The room is old, dated, gross - I literally slept and left. The double bed is 2 single beds pushed together but it doesn't... fit together. There was a box of Barbie themed tissues on the dresser - an amenity?
Breakfast was bad and the coffee even worse.
At check-out we had to hang around for someone to go \"check the room\". What they think guests might take is beyond me. (The Barbie tissues, perhaps?)

We were disappointed with the room we were given for the two days we had booked. Mentioned to reception, but seem the answer was most rooms full, even tho the hotel seemed empty. Had to cancel one night stay and move to a hotel adjacent with great facilities and staff that accommodated our needs.
Rooms were dark including the walkways to rooms. Didn’t look like the advertised product.

Holidayed in this hotel 2years ago and decided to return this year on a half board basis.the food was excellent as was the service.hotel is cleaned every day to an inch of its life! staff are excellent from cleaners to front desk.would return next year but @73 the journey from UK is getting a bit much.try it you won't be disappointed from the turtles on the beach the coral fish terrific.

The staff are all wonderful, and they are constantly cleaning and maintaining the property. It's just a lovely place to stay. Even in the rainy season the place was a delight. Clearly one of the best values you can find, and I daresay the place to stay in Hikkaduwa.

Location and seaview rooms were amazing. The breakfast and dinner buffet were included in the stay there and were very good. The only downside to this place is the wifi. There is no wifi in the rooms. The wifi in the common spaces is not the best. For the amount of money this place cost, you would think they would have figured this part out. I had better wifi at $15 a night guest houses. Would recommend this place if you do not need wifi/internet during your stay. I needed it for work.

This hotel is totally over rated and over priced! The staff is extremely friendly and the beach is lovely though. But the room smelled horrible, apparently from insecticide. The bathroom had black mold in the ceiling and the fridge was very dirty. The bed had only sheets, no blanket. The WiFi worked ok after a struggle during the first few days. The breakfast was very mediocre and only served from 0730-0930. The pool area is new and nice, but very crowded with beach chairs, that gets reserved with towels already very early in the morning. Horrible traffic right outside the door. I wouldn’t stay here again, though there seemed to be a lot of frequent visitors, mainly older Europeans.

Only if you want to visit Hikkaduwa

Hikkaduwa has a limited hotel base and I would only recommend it to people who really want to see the coral reef. The \"marine park\" is one of the busiest and most polluted beaches in Sri Lanka. Hundreds of diesel boats operate on the beach all day long. Snorkeling in the reef is unpleasant and dangerous due to heavy boat traffic. The porch in front of our room had an intense diesel fumes smell and we could only enjoy it around sunset when the marine traffic was less.
The hotel is aging and the deluxe rooms are small and need renovations. Room and bathroom equipment looks very cheap. Ground rooms give little privacy but a nice ocean view due to a large window.
Restaurant staff is more like a police asking you the room number 3 times during each meal and making double sure you signed the bill for any extra drinks before leaving. They were less attentive to guests requests and the food quality was very inconsistent. Also, if they want the foreigners to enjoy the local food they should not overload it with copious amounts of chilly flakes which ruin the taste and the stomach. Very limited vegetarian options.

Pool had a medium size but the water was suspiciously cloudy. Pool attendants mostly concerned with rationing the towels which they always hand over reluctantly.
Overall the hotel needs urgent renovations and the staff should be trained in hospitality.

Awesome stay at Coral Sands!

We were a little apprehensive about booking this hotel because of some adverse reviews. However, we wanted a good location (rated excellent by most guests) and we had a tight budget. Contrary to some reviews, our experience during our 4-night stay in the hotel was just awesome!
The hotel deserved 5 stars in the following areas:
1.Great location almost next to the sea. It was like having a private beach.
2.Awesome view from the room. The balcony over looked a beautiful view of the sea
3.Great service. Ever smiling faces around to help you and make you comfortable
4.A large well-lit swimming pool with sparkling water
5.A huge spread of breakfast to cater to almost all tastes with live counters for eggs, waffles and appam.
6.A large multi-cuisine restaurant with very helpful staff
7.A well stocked open air bar overlooking the sea.
Our rating dipped a little in the following areas:
1.Irritating flies in the breakfast serving area preventing us to touch anything (cut fruits, assorted bread, etc.) not covered.
2.No wi-fi in the room. So one has to come down every time for accessing internet as 3G data was extremely slow.

A very adequate hotel with a lovely swimming pool in a good location close to centre of Hikkaduwa. Rooms on beachside not affected by the busy road
Easy access to the beach and surfing, snorkelling etc
Food at breakfast is standard international buffet and absolutely fine
Lots of restaurants available within walking distance and dozens more within a 100 rupee tuktuk ride
Endless things to do and see in the local area

I wanted a beach break after a hectic few days in Colombo and this is just what I got. The staff couldn't do enough to provide for a happy stay. The food was plentiful but not necessarily best quality, having said this it was value for money. 38 years since I last visited Sri Lanka and this place offers the best value and friendliness of staff.

Perfect choice for a stay in Hikkaduwa.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Coral Sands. Whilst we have stayed in more luxurious hotels we found that all the staff from the pool men, to bar staff, to the room cleaners, to the senior management went out of their way to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. Constantly trying to please without over pestering, it was thoroughly enjoyable. We chose Hikkaduwa, because we hoped the sea would be calmer in this area and more suitable for swimming than other beaches and on our experience this was certainly the case. From what we saw in Hikkaduwa it looked like Coral Sands was by far the best hotel in this area. Its a perfect location in the centre of Hikkaduwa and is located right on the beach. The pool was clean and tidy and was perfect to relax around. We found the food at the hotel to be very reasonably priced. If you looking for a beach holiday in Sri Lanka, I would recommend this hotel as your perfect choice.

I mistakenly booked for 1 person instead of 2 (2 In 1 room) and on my arrival they added US$ 35 per day to the bill I asked why so much for breakfast (Which was included and a ok buffet). I was told it was for the room?? and the facilities not just breakfast. Yet when I went to use the gym it was an extra cost to use it.
This was a little odd to me but apart from that confusion it was an enjoyable stay.
Last thing the rooms especially the bathrooms could do with a touch up to bring them up to the price they are charging.

The hotel is right by the beach with direct beach access. The room was clean, and the A/C and fan were quiet and efficient, easy to get a comfortable temperature quickly and quietly. The best part is our own balcony with our own loungers and sun umbrella, with full 180 seaview, and lovely sunset view right from the balcony. We were in the deluxe extra room. The deluxe room has smaller balcony with chairs only but still have great seaview. The wifi is in public area only and rather slow, but works well enough for email and whatapps, but if you want to make skype call, you would be better off getting a local sim card which are cheap to make international calls.

The food in the hotel is adequate but not great, however, there are many restaurants within 10 minutes walk, and it is relatively cheap comparing to London. Mostly casual restaurants with good local and western food by the beach. Seafood, including lobsters and crabs, were great.

Sea turtles come up to the beach every morning in the nearby coral area (5 minutes walk on the beach). There is also a turtle sanctuary about 30 minutes drive away with live turtle of different ages that you can handle. My teenagers loved that. Snorkeling can be done right by the beach or get a 10 minutes boat / canoe ride out to the Coral Sanctuary with calmer sea and more fish, but not much coral.

Centrally located with basic facilities

The good: The hotel is located right beside a sea diving school and therefore access to sea sports is very good. The coral reef is visible and the pool.

The bad: We were given a room with two plug points that were at the floor level. Yes, floor level. One was in working condition other was not. Upon bringing this to the notice of the hotel staff, I was asked to adjust and make do. At 10.30 PM, the hotel electrician wanted 45 minutes to fix it. It is only after a lot of noise did they give us another room.

Due to the proximity to the diving school and the market, I would recommend this hotel and also visit again. Do note that the one road market and the ocean is all there is to do in Hikkaduwa.

Unfortunately we didnt have a pleasant stay as we had expected.
A standard room was booked with the hotel but essential amenities were surprisingly not included - such as bottled water! also there were several problems with the room (no hot water/ broken shower door/ exposed wires to name a few)and the hotel could not offer any form of compensation. instead our only option was to pay extra and upgrade to another room which was fully functional. the staff were not compassionate or empathetic to our needs. to make matters worse, our upgrades room had a leak onto the bed when we had heavy rain.

Comfortable room and a nice location on the beach. Friendly staff and good service. The buffet breakfast was very good but I cannot say the same for the evening meall. Again a buffet service but you had to move fast as food seemed to go quickly and i didn't see it being replenished. Although the food was tasty it looked unappealing.

Don't stay here unless you get the room very cheap

Very run down and not very clean. Way to expensive for what you get. Can not recommend this hotel and the dinner buffet for the halfboard was so bad we didn't even want to eat it, DJ playing very loud music in the restaurant and full of people everywhere.

Hotellet ligger nära revet där det är helt ok att snorkla. Mindre vågor på den stranden också jämfört med den stora surfstranden. Vi bodde i deluxrum med en stor altan utanför, vilket var mycket bra.
Maten i Hikkaduwa var mycket billig. Vi åt i snitt för 150kr för två personer och 1,5 l öl.

Oud hotel, slechte matrassen( spiraal en plastic krakerigs).., badkamer met kakkerlakkwn. service ja dat begrijpen ze gewoon niet is t 3 sterren waard...2,5 ster. Alles is er, en t is ' ok', stank van de boten is zwaar aanwezig in de tuin v h strand .net of je vergast wordt zoveel luchtvervuiling voor de deur, locatie verder is top. .maar je vind niks bijzonders. Wij zijn stukje verderop gaan liggen ..op t strand.. betere luchtkwaliteir
