The room was generally nice, but unfortunately, I found hair on the bed sheets when I checked in. It made me feel that the cleanliness could be improved. I hope the hotel pays more attention to room hygiene, as the rest of the environment and service were quite good.

Great staff in a tired facility

We love the Shangri-La brand but were disappointed with several aspects of our visit to Guilin. 1) The pool was closed for maintenance. If we had known ahead of time, we wouldn’t have booked. 2) No bathroom scales. 3) very few outlets and ancient tech support. 4) The facility is showing its age. TV old and small. Staff, however, was superb!

We traveled with our 10 year old son, and a couple friends of us. We booked a Suite for us, and our friends had a Suite too. This is such a beautiful hotel within a small town, surrounded by nature. Our son loved the animals encounter, and the car raising there. The food was so incredible fresh and delicious. We loved their local noodles soup with pork skins... it is something that we will miss. Also, their fruits were all amazing, especially their sweet passion fruits... The staff at this hotel was so welcoming and kind, that we will miss them too. THANK YOU!!

We stayed four nights in Oct 24. In short, the hotel is rather outdated and needs urgent refurbishment. Whilst the lobby is spacious and impressive, rooms are small, cramped and all the equipment is seriously worn out. It has also been the first time I have seen a facility claiming to be a 5 star hotel to offer basic amenities (soap, hair conditioner, body lotion) in dispensers mounted to the walls. Interestingly, there were no dispensers available nearby the tub. Additionally, the air con was smelly and too loud when operating, making us not to use it during the stay,
Overall quite a humble standard compared with other 5 star facilities in China.

The staff in general are very nice and attentive including front desk, housekeeping, executive lounge as well as the garden lady 万小鳳. All good except Shang Gong where our group dined three or four times but seems understaffed, thus the serving time kept being delayed.

Beautifully decorated, combining Chinese style motifs with Western comfort. Spacious room and bathroom. Comfortable bed. The hotel picked us up in a transfer van. The trunk perfectly fit 5 carryon suitcases and a few soft bags. He was waiting with a sign just as promised.

My family enjoyed our stay at the Shangri-La Hotel in Guilin very much. The hotel is located right next to the river and the river views (particularly at sunset) were breathtaking. It is located a bit outside of the center of town, but within walking distance (along the river) or a short taxi ride away. While the hotel seemed to be quite full - it seemed empty at the same time. That is both a compliment and a critique - as it was quite tranquil, but also a few areas seemed to be either closed or not in operation. Overall, we would readily stay at this hotel again.

Booked a pricey room on the club floor, no complains about the room or the hotel it was excellent as expected by Shangri-la. My main issue is with the dining services which is shocking as I am frequent traveler all over Asia.
I wanted to complain to the hotel GM but was not available both the times I asked the staff!!

Breakfast - Service during breakfast was extremely slow and didnt really eat my usual breakfast for 2 days of my 5 days in this hotel. I usually like to have eggs for which there is a chef making eggs the way you want it, both times inspite of it being busy at 7am in the morning there is only a single chef to make eggs and his speed of making eggs was the slowest I have ever seen world over, even with 3-4 people ahead of me i couldnt get my eggs for over 20 minutes which is really pathetic. Tea and Coffee by the time you get it its not hot anymore.
Pancakes was not available they only make a few at a time and it vanishes so even my boy couldnt enjoy his favourite. Since we had tours booked we didnt have extra time for breakfast and this was a complete waste

Dinner buffet: Tried the dinner buffet one night at 730PM, surprisingly there was no Indian bread, like Naan or Roti available to eat with the Indian dishes there, Asked several staff including the manager of the restaurant they said no bread, eat with Rice, they are telling me how I should eat indian food. I registered a complaint but got no feedback, would like to hear back from the Hotel management !!

Stayed in Horizon Club. Service was very good. Check in was fast and fuss free. The travel desk on the ground floor was also very helpful. 2 minor gripes: a) Room decor is a bit dated. It's very clean but the decor style looks dated like something from early 2000s, b) limited food choices in the afternoon. Main chinese restaurant not open throughout the day.

This was the first time we ever stayed at the Shangri-La Hotel. This was also the first time we traveled Guilin.
The service at the Shangri-La Hotel was outstanding. We were greeted with a warm smile by the Demo at the check-in counter. Demo help us with getting our room, She was so friendly. I mentioned that we wanted to go see the Li-jiang. After she got our room registered, Demo took us over to another counter, informed the person what we wanted because we didn’t speak the language very well. We were able to book a river cruise for the next day.

While I was being checked in, my wife was greeted by an Indonesian women by the name of Jenny. She served us Monk Fruit tea. Jenny had inform my wife about the fruit, where we can purchase some, how to make the tea, etc. Please keep in mind that there were other guest there too. Jenny took the time to talk to my wife. She answered some questions about your beautiful city.

By the way did I also mention that since we arrived late, Demo asked if we had dinner yet and we told her no we haven’t. She immediately asked us if she can help make reservation for us at the restaurant. We walked into the restaurant about 9:45 and the waiter / waitress were very accommodating. We felt bad about eating there so late but they said it was no problem. Everyone there was so accommodating and friendly. Again, the hospitality at this hotel were awesome! We will definitely come back and recommend this to our friends & family!

I wish I can stay there for a longer time.
We were greeted by Charles, he is the manger of the hotel. He shown and walked us to our room personally. He understood that we had to catch a train; so he called and had a taxi ready for us right away. We really appreciated his great service. The food and service at their Chinese restaurant, and at the lobby lounge were also very nice and tasty. I would definitely stay there again.

This property is luxurious, the staff are very attentive to your needs and the concierge company is very helpful. The buffet is impressive and club-level is a real treat. Also, the Olympic length lap pool and on-property zoo was very unexpected! This hotel has everything you need.

The property is perfectly fine, but showing it's age with respect to the condition of the rooms. The main issue I have as a non-smoker is the zero enforcement of smoking in non-smoking areas....especially on a non-smoking floor! The service in their buffet restaurant and the quality of the food is, in my opinion, sub-par compared to other Shangri-La hotels I have stayed. I was rudely turned away the first evening because they booked the entire place for a function or tour group. I have never experienced that at any 5-star hotel I have stayed. If you are a foreigner with a credit card and need cash from an ATM...good luck. The front desk will happily exchange cash against your card for a hefty service charge if not a Golden Circle member. The property isn't nearly as attractive as they show in the photos...neither are the views.

The place to stay in Guilin

Our stay in Guilin was a highlight. The hotel was accommodating from the minute we booked in. The front desk staff were welcoming and they spoke English quite well, which is always a bonus. The hotel facilities are very good, the pool is kept very clean and a great place to relax. There is an indoor pool as well. Plenty of things to do with the family within the hotel too.

1.Arrived 5:20 am on the overnight train, upon arrival the car we booked with the hotel wasn't there. Called the hotel, the front desk told me that I told them the wrong train station. Upon arriving at the hotel we all read the 2 mails I had sent clearly stating Guilin North station. No charge for the transfer.
2.In the same mails, I asked if it was possible to have one of my rooms early. There was no response.Upon arrival they were going to charge me another full day. Maybe that Is correct but why couldn't they tell me that a week prior, I would have booked elsewhere.I was told I should not have asked the concierge as it is not his job. Really?Ultimately, they gave us the rooms but it felt like it was my fault,again.
3.At 10am the kids wanted to go to the pool, which was the only reason we booked the hotel. The outdoor pool opens at 3pm! Never heard that one before, yes the noisy,crowded indoor pool was open.
4.Asked for a local restaurant. Was told there is nothing near the hotel. Had to go to town, no problem, but the Hotel is poorly positioned.
5.Had dinner in the hotel. It was mediocre and forgettable.
6.in the lobby, they use very cheap fragrance spray extensively. As we learned, no fragrance is better than sickly sweet chemical spray.

The rooms were absolutely fine. The grounds at night are lovely and the pool when open is great but this is an overpromise, under deliver hotel.

Luxurious, but service was disappointing

Hotel was well-kept and obviously, as the Shangri-la, it was luxurious. The location is not very central, but it was still very easy to take a taxi wherever we needed, and all the drivers knew where the hotel is so it was never inconvenient. However, there were a few times I was surprised and disappointed by the service. Many of the staff were lovely, but many seemed to have different ideas of how to interact with customers. As an American/Westerner, I understand that many countries have different views of what qualifies as good service and that part of traveling is complying with local norms. However, as this was a well-known and expensive hotel, I was surprised that often my fellow travelers had to deal with curious service norms. It often felt as if the staff were purposefully pushing us to purchase the goods and services of the hotel, and at times staff refused to recommend local city goods and services at the insistence that we would only enjoy theirs (we were able to locate other options which we enjoyed). Once, we waited at the service desk for nearly half an hour to be helped, and despite asking (in both English and Chinese) several staff members for help, we were ignored, then given inadequate information. There was another instance when a staff member offered their friends' services to us upon our arrival at the hotel, and refused to leave us alone until we agreed to contact this friend. Luxury was great but the service was underwhelming for such a renowned hotel.

Hotel with Lots of Amenities!!

This hotel was better than expected, it is more like a resort!! Plenty of things to do and eat, right there at the hotel. Staff there are very friendly and helpful. Lots of the staff speak English, and if they can't figure out what you are asking for, they try to find someone right away to help. There is a travel agency right in the lobby to book any tours that you might want to do. The room was extremely clean and the furniture was in great condition. Plenty of snacks and places to eat at a reasonable price right on site. When we arrived, they did try to get us to upgrade the room, which we decided not to do. We had a \"city view\" and it would have cost 100 RMB to upgrade to \"river view,\" which was only marginally better. I don't have any kids, so I can't say for sure, but I'd say this hotel has more things to do for kids than I've seen anywhere else in China. There is a feeding zoo with ostriches, but I didn't see that. The hotel is located basically in a big park, and they even have a recommended jogging path for you on a lanyard in the room. The AC was working great, and was definitely needed because it was very humid in Guilin. I've stayed in quite a few other hotels in China, and most of them have inadequate heating and AC systems. Not the case for this hotel. I was pleasantly surprised. This hotel is a GREAT DEAL for the price. Treat yourself and your family by staying here!!!

My stay at the hotel was excellent. The service is good. The location of the hotel is however too far from the downtown area. I speak fluent Mandarine and still find problem getting to and from the city activity. My 2nd choice was Sheraton which I moved to on my 3rd day in Guilin. Sheraton is at a superior location but the wifi is so poor it reflect the whole country with so much restriction on information.

\"Shangri-La\" means \"Hidden Paradise\"; Precisely!

The Shangri-La is a wonderful place, with a beautiful lobby, elegant rooms and comfortable beds. Add to it the charming and very helpful staff and your stay becomes almost perfect. The promotion they offer to join the “Horizon Club” is an excellent deal. It gives you a nice room on the 7th floor and covers your breakfast, which would be extra otherwise. It offers tee and soft drinks all day in the exclusive Sky Club lounge and 5pm snacks which are so generous it becomes a light dinner option. The dinner buffet was not quite what Westerners understand to be Chinese food. For me there were too many sea creatures, but I was told they are healthy. By the way, the Chinese invariably go for the green salads, fruits and, yes, sea creatures; the Westerners go for bacon and French Fries. It shows!
The location is a bit on the outskirts of town, but the metered taxis are very cheap. If you need advice about where to go in Guilin, or where to find the only Starbucks in town, ask young Señor Ruben from Mexico; he’ll tell you in several languages, Chinese included.

Beautiful view of the Li Mountains

Beautiful hotel, wonderful staff, but a little out of the way. Our Chinese Guide told us that the area was bad for pickpockets so we never walked around the area. The hotel itself was gorgous and the view from our top floor room overlooked the mountians which looked just like the movies. It was a little on the expensive side, but worth it if you want to spoil yourself a little. We received fresh fruit in the afternoon in our room. The room has a kettle and fridge. The room was a little hot and only one window opened and not far enough to let in any real air. The room was very quiet. We took a day trip on the Li River which was absolutely fabulous and I would reccommend it to everyone wanting to see the local mountains. One of the spots is featured on the Chines $20.00 Yuen. When you land at the other end of the river an hour from Guilin, there is a nice shopping area (but very touristy) and the drive back is interesting as you drive through smaller towns and farm land

Such a mixed trip.

House keeping girl last name Lv was just soooo nice, she even wrote use a note after helping us wash some of our own dishes that we wish to keep. The hotel lobby is fancy looking yes, locations is out of reach but doable. However, the worst was the front desk staff. Especially the girl named Rose Qin. The minute we get there, she was trying to make us pay more to upgrade to another room, and trying to sell us other things. Gave us a really bad impression of Guilin. Even in a 5 star hotel, everyone is trying to trick you. I love China, but this experience really sucks.

Amazing service and hotel... ok views.

This hotel was fantastic! It's a little bit out of the city square, but you do get a view of the mountains. However, what stood out for us was the service. We were planning to take the train from Guilin to Shenzhen to go to Hong Kong, but we weren't sure about some of the directions from there. The hotel concierge investigated this, and then gave us special directions and instructions in chinese to ask local people when we got there. I've been to several 5-star hotels, and this has been the best service so far.

On the lesser side, we thought that the view was going to be better. We had upgraded to the river-view. We certainly got the river-view, as well as a small peak at the mountains. However, what we didn't anticipate was also seeing a big road and seeing all of those cars. It seemed a little bit different from the photos that we saw on the site.

We stayed on the courtyard side and unfortunately it was very noisy. The road noise was loud as was the noise in the corridors outside the rooms. Sound proofing was not something incorporated into the build of the hotel. The smoke in the corridors was overwhelming. If you were late to the breakfast buffet there was no fresh fruit left and minimal quantities of other food. There is not a lot on offer in Guilin at this point in time so until something else is built this is the best on offer.

overall ok hotel

we stayed at the Shangri-La for 3 nights. Overall, it is an OK hotel, lobby is beautiful, rooms a bit run-down compared to other 5-star hotels we stayed at. Breakfast was not great, a lot of selection, but quality of food not the best. Location is also far away from the central area, you can't really leave the hotel on foot, as the surrounding area is not safe. It is about 10-15 min drive to the centre, so not a huge deal, but i feel that a more centrally located hotel would have been more convenient.

Ok hotel but terrible staff.

The breakfast selections were minimal compared to other five star hotels.
Since the choices at the hotel were small, we got a name of a local famous restaurant. However, the locals we talked to suggested we should make reservation.
We asked our \"concierge\" to help. This is the reply we got. Please give me the name, number, and address of the restaurant and let me see what I can do. If I know the number and address , what do I need him for. Worthless conversation.
The last day we were there, I gave to leave work early. My wife decided to have breakfast with her friend. We had already prepaid for two for breakfast. We also paid extra for their Club rooms. My wife were told she had to pay for her friend and they cannot use the Club lounge. Since I have the reservation with me, she could not reason with them. She was told to paid for her friend even though we had paid for two and I did not use breakfast that morning.
Afterward, I called to inquire about the incident, the manager could not find anyone who would owe up to it. No apology was given by the manager.

Great pools

Hotel offers 2 pools the first in a garden setting but it appears to be closed for an extended period over the northern winter months. The second being a very bid indirect 25m pool which will please most swimmers

Hotel is out of the central city but not too far. Nevertheless be prepared to pay a flat rate of 120 RMB from the airport which is reasonable given the distance

Quality Hotel that warrants its price

Stayed here for last night of a trip to China, and was worried about location, staff, and price after interacting with the very tourist-y area of Yangshuo. Didn't expect it, but the hotel was a really nice exception to the overwhelmingly touristy area of Guilin and Yangshuo. Staff are super friendly and genuinely nice, unlike other hotels in the area that feel like they are only there to nickel and dime you. Shang Restaurant is really good and there are plenty of other nearby options. The shops in and around the hotel are also great places to fit in some last minute gift buying. Really, really glad the Shangri-la provided me with an excellent end to my travels in China.

The hotel is very good. a nice 5-star hotel. The only bad experience was that we were suggested to an eating place in the near-by village along the river but that was not very good experience (the walk to there was through very bad road and the restuarant was country style which was not very clean at all).

Very Comfortable Hotel

Although not very close (easy walking distance) to the main sites or city center, I still have to say we were very glad to stay. The Shangri-La offered a comfortable place after all the hustle and bustle of touring Guilin. The room was quiet and the staff extremely attentive and helpful. Taxi rates aren't that bad getting to the main sites and most rides were less than 15 minutes. The Horizon club is completely worth it. The hotel concierge was great at recommendations and very helpful in getting us where we wanted to go.

I am very picky about hotels and the Shangari-La Hotel in Guilin didn't disappoint me. My husband and I stayed for 3 nights in the Horizon floor and we were very pleased with our stay. Will definitely come back in the future!

Can't get any better

The hotel overall is very grandeur as we expected, unlike other luxurious chain hotels, Shangri-la occupies a very big piece of land, everything is so spacious - you felt like you've checked in into a resort rather. Staff speaks reasonably good english and the service certainly live up to the standard of 5 star hotel. We booked the Horizon club room so it entitles us to use the horizon club lounge, which is amazing, they offer coffee, tea, soft drinks, juices all day long. This is especially good after a long day of travel. One can always argue that the hotel is not at the city centre, but in my opinion, the so called centre of the city is only about 5-10 mins taxi ride (or if you'd like a stroll around, which me and my partner did, it only took us about 20-25 mins to walk.) So in this case, the location is rather a pro than a con.

Exceptionally nice hotel for non-smokers

Shangri-La is a very nice hotel for non-smokers. While the hotel has both smoking and non-smoking rooms, we were able to find a room which was truly non-smoking unlike our experience at other high end hotels in China. Chinese Restaurant is highly recommended.

Over - priced for location - outdoor pool closed.

We booked this hotel for its outdoor pool - so we could have some much needed r and r. We arrived to be told that this (lovely) pool was closed for building work. (The indoor pool is like a standard local authority baths). The grounds are located next to the River, so we went for a walk through the gardens to find that the exit gate to the riverside was locked. How much would it cost to employ a security guard for the gate in Guillin? - a daily rate equating to the price of a Shangri-la club sandwich? Food and wine is very expensive here, but we were desperated by now for a western meal so dined in the restaurant. Very nice. We were on the 6th floor and passed the 'Horizon' club. Popped in to see about internet service, which if free. Surprisingly, we were also told that they had a happy 2 hours every evening - booze and canapes free to guests - they seem to keep this information rather quiet! (Not sure if this is only available to independent booking guests). Naturally we partook of this facility for the following 2 nights! As usual in China, their priority at booking was to try to get us to pay for an upgrade room. We refused and were put in a room overlooking the main road. Noise insulation is inadequate on this side - honking car horns etc so we asked for a new room and put on another side of the triangle, overlooking reception which was quiet.

Nicest hotel in Guilin

This hotel ROCKS! the staff is amazingly friendly, most speak English and the rooms are gorgeous. They are all brand new and spotless. The little amenities in the bathroom were more than I have seen at most other 5 star hotels. The room was so well appointed, they thought of everything; even a gas mask in case of fire to prevent smoke inhalation! We stayed on the executive floor and were provided drinks and food in the evening and breakfast in the morning, although we found the main hotel buffet breakfast to be better. There was so much food in the morning, Eastern and Western type foods. You won't find a better hotel probably in the whole Guangxi province. We stayed for 2 nights in May.
