The staff was very helpful in providing a room before the usual 4:00PM check-in time. We were able to get situated, freshen up, rest and get ready for the Padres vs Dodgers game. The room was very clean, brought up to date and extremely comfortable. I love the fitness and yoga rooms. The location of Hotel Sofia is perfect; a nice equidistant walk to Little Italy, Gaslamp and the water.

What can I say about this establishment that probably hasn’t been set already it is very top notch hassled in an old building in San Diego. It gives you the feeling of being at home. The rooms may be a little small, but they’re quaint. All my questions were answered in a polite and timely manner. There was no jumping through hoops, checking in ballet and checking out, was done with a breeze, if looking for a small hotel in a nice area away from the gaslamp District, the Sophia is when I highly recommend

We had an amazing time at the Sofia hotel! It was the perfect location for my husband to attend his conference at the Convention Center, and for the kids and I to explore San Diego. The bus to the zoo and museums picks up and drops off right in front of the hotel. There are great food options on every corner. The hotel itself was clean and quiet. The Kind Suite was spacious enough for the four of us to spread out. It was also nice to have our own fridge and microwave. The staff was very friendly and responsive, from bringing extra bedding for the pull-out sofa, to allowing us to check our bags until we flew out at 6 pm. We'd highly recommend this hotel for families or anyone looking for a city experience in San Diego!

The hotel itself was fine, but our experience at the uca restaurant was terrible. The restaurant seemed severely short-staffed, service was very slow, and we waited a long time for our food. Unfortunately, the food quality was also very poor. This experience left a negative impression and overshadowed the rest of our stay.

This was the perfect place to stay as it is at the top of the Gaslamp District in San Diego. Walking distance to Petco Park, the San Diego Convention Center, and the Navy Pier. Plus is just blocks from my San Diego office. Great and Helpful staff and they are always ready to get you directions to the best for or experiences within walking distance and beyond.

When I booked I picked the premium queen suite. What was shown was NOT what we got. We couldn’t even watch the tv because it was on the wall beside the bed.
While I understand you don’t always get what you see I expected to at least have a usable room.
The ac did not keep up, even having it set at 64 degrees it said it was 73. The windows are sealed shut so you can’t even get a breeze going to help cool it down.
The shower is tiny, and we had a sewage smell coming from both it and the sink.

Overall I was very disappointed in what we received versus what room we got considering I “upgraded” to the premium.

Convenient downtown hotel, within walking distance to pier and dining establishments in Little Italy. Attached Mediterranean restaurant Truva very nice, good food, cocktails and excellent service. Seems like older hotel with musty smell in lobby and hallways, but room was clean and comfortable. Need to find way to prevent water leakage from shower - bath floor always a mess.

There was a thick layer of dust on the furniture. Had to clean it myself.
Also the staff do not do a thorough cleaning, as there was a mans jacket left in the closet.
We wanted to go on the walking tour but apparently they do not have that anymore.
Otherwise a nice place to stay.

They checked me into uncleaned room and when I brought it to their attention they put me in a room that directly butted up to the elevator. You could literally hear the elevator move all night. The room didn't cool down. When it was cleaned(not well) they didn't replenish the coffee. The gym was not good, again equipment, no bikes and the topper was $40 a night for parking. For me it was not worth the price. Best part was the staff. They were all great.

The hotel adds a vague “Guest Services” fee of $24 per night that is in the fine print of the advertised room rate. This brought the actual cost to about $215/night at checkout. If these mandatory fees were included upfront, some budget-conscious travelers might filter the property out during their search. Hiding part of the cost until later makes the pricing feel less transparent than it should be.

I was pleasantly surprised by how nicely kept and clean everything was, including carpets and furniture. The coffee in the room was great. The only negative is that there is no breakfast included and the adjacent restaurant to buy it does not open until 7:00 am. However, there is a Starbucks also next door. I highly recommend the room for the very good rate that I had.

Was in town for a convention at the Convention Center which was only about a 1/2 mile / 10-15 minute walk away. Chipotle across the street was a lifesaver. Near the Balboa Theater if you’re in town to see a play/ show. Lots of restaurants in the Gaslight District. Petco Park next to Convention Center. Hotel staff friendly and helpful. Room very clean. Bed comfortable. Short bus ride for $2.50 to the airport should you choose to bypass Uber or a taxi. Only gripe I had was the TV in the room didn’t work properly and I needed maintenance to fix it each night. Otherwise, no complaints.

Although clean, the room was the smallest we’ve ever stayed in, to the point that the sink was in the room not the bathroom. Very nice rain shower, but water didn’t drain properly the first day - it was fixed after notifying the front desk. View out the window was a wall several feet away. Air conditioning unit was loud and rattled all night, and the bed was hard and uncomfortable. Parking was $50 per night, but that appeared to be par for the downtown area.

The staff were by far the best part of my stay. Everyone I interacted with was friendly, helpful, and accommodating. They provided great restaurant recommendations, assisted with printing documents, and quickly addressed concerns when they arose.

I stayed for two nights and was initially assigned a room on the fourth floor. The elevator felt old and dimly lit, and the hallways had a noticeable lingering smoke odor, the kind that seems permanently embedded from years when smoking was permitted. The room itself was quite cramped.

One of the first things I noticed was that the TV had no signal. When I called the front desk, they offered to send maintenance. During that conversation, I learned that only rooms on the seventh floor had streaming capabilities, and even then, only Netflix was available. Fortunately, the staff member kindly moved me to a room on the seventh floor.

The difference was significant. The seventh floor was brighter, felt better maintained, and provided a much better overall impression of the property. While the second room was still small, it was more comfortable and acceptable for a short stay.

Despite the excellent service, the condition of parts of the hotel and the small rooms left me disappointed. I appreciated the efforts of the staff, but I would not choose to stay here again.

However, I think the hotel is too dark inside, rooms are very dark, even hard to see inside the closet when you are looking for clothes, even though all lights were tuned on. Also, the cleaning would always forget to replace a towel or completely forget to leave some soap on the sink for us. When I called them they promptly responded and sent us the supplies.

While staying here, I was impressed with nearly everything The Sofia had to offer from the gorgeous rooms, the hotels view, helpful staff, and even complementary goodies in the lobby. I will say I was not a fan of having learning that you must pay to park here as it’s not included in your reservation. I also felt the property lacked more amenities for its guests like a hot tub or even a sort of breakfast voucher for their new restaurant downstairs. Overall, me and my plus one had a fantastic opportunity to stay here. 7.5/10

This hotel was so cute. The lobby to the rooms to the restaurant in the front were all adorable. Ian & Martha at the front desk were awesome! And Mark at the Bar was amazing. The room was great and the microwave and fridge are always awesome to have in a room. I stayed in a renovated room on the top floor and had a view of the ocean from my room. You can hear the noise on the street but its normal in a busy city and wasn't to bad at night. The location of the hotel is great. Its a 15min walk to the boardwalk with restaurants and activates to do. Most places are an 10-20 Lyft ride away and the bus is $2.50 and 10mins away from the airport.
The only Cons:
* The air conditioner had a mind of its own. It would cut off and on and change the temp setting all the time. Kinda annoying but I got a fan from the front desk when I went to tell them about it and they came up with it within 10mins. One night I was frozen and the next it wouldn't stay on.
* The shower didn't drain correctly the 1st 3 times I used it so I was standing in water but it never collected enough to run over.
* The walls are thin so if you have loud talking neighbors you will hear them. luckily the loud people next to me were only there my 1st night and weren't up past 12am.
Overall it was a great and I will definitely stay there again if I have the chance. So if you are thinking about booking here do it!!
Call ahead of time to ask about the deposit details!

The hotel is a beautiful old hotel. The rooms were clean and beds were comfortable. The problem I had was the first room they put me in was right next to the elevators. The elevator doors were very squeeky, and they kept me up all night every time they opened and closed. I complained and they moved my room. The next room they put me in had a faulty coffee maker. The toilet also didn't flush. Those two issues were solved on day two of my 3 night stay. However, I came back from the convention center after work on day two, and my room was not cleaned. I came back at 3pm. I did complain and the manager offered to move me to a suite for my last night, but I refused as I didn't want to pack and unpack again, just for one night. She said she would give me her card for an upgrade on my next stay but she never gave me the card.

Finally put one suitcase on the desk and one under the desk with some chair negotiating. The a/c was loud and didn’t work the first night, but they quickly took care of that while we were out. Thankfully it was too hot of a day that day.

Stayed on a business trip beginning of June. Great location, walking distance to little Italy, Gaslamp District and waterfront with many dining options. Staff was polite and helpful. There is a small gym at the hotel but there are options close by. The property is an old, historic building that is maintained well. If you are a light sleeper you might find the location a bit noisy early in the morning but I was ok with that. Overall good experience.

This is a member of Historic Hotels of America. The exterior fire escapes testify to its age, but the interiors have been nicely updated. The bath is nice, the Nespresso works. Flavored wter on offer in the lobby. The rooms are not large but efficiently laid out. Although there is a restaurant on site, our late arrival coincided with a decision to close early, so we went to bed with only a cup of coffee and some cheetos. Although several websites indicated there was an airport shuttle, a call to confirm this revealed it was not true. BUT there is a city bus from the airport (not the easiest to locate) that stops just across the street. The location allows walking to the waterfront, Little Italy, the Gaslamp Quarter, and even the baseball stadium. Overall we were pleased with this hotel.

I stayed here many years ago and it has fallen from grace for sure. They used to have a lovely little restaurant which is now gone. The rooms feel like they’re in disrepair, the carpets, the walls, the furniture, the paint the tiles everything just feels so shabby and old. I would not stay here again.

Unfortunately, our stay was disappointing. The shower had a large gap in the door, causing water to leak all over the bathroom floor and outside the bathroom entrance every time it was used. We had to call every day for extra towels just to clean up the water. While staff provided towels, no one ever acknowledged the issue or offered even a simple apology for the inconvenience.

It seemed like this was a known problem, yet it was never mentioned or addressed during our stay. Additionally, the room lacked a main overhead light, so the only lighting came from a few wall lamps, making the room feel quite dark.

Parking was another frustration. At $40 per night, I expected a more convenient experience, but parking was extremely limited and often difficult to find.

Overall, while the hotel had some positives, the lack of attention to guest concerns, poor communication, and additional parking expense made the stay feel less enjoyable than expected.
