The electricity went out. They need solar lights along the gravel path leading to the bungalows. I tripped over the speed bump on the path and my injuries effected my entire trip. Perfectly avoidable.

No one in office at checkin time. I had to wait in a parking lot for 45 minutes with my baby. That evening, the staff were again not there, and the line security guard wouldn’t let me drive my car to the room. He suggested I leave my baby alone in the room while I park the car elsewhere.
Room was shabby. Bed lumpy and plastic feeling. One sheet and no comforter.

This property is large and beautiful! Well taken care of! The pool is wonderful too! Great place to stay with the family or as a couple. Only note is if you stay in a villa, request one a few up the hill. Unless you are there for the party and to stay up late. The music sounds great, just goes late.

The 2nd level units are about a 100 ft (10 stories) hike up...it is exhausting. They charge $2/day for a beach towel. They add chlorine tablets into the pool skimmer...not a good practice. However, the rooms are fine for the price and the grounds are tropical.

Beautiful stay at Esencia!

We had a wonderful stay at Esencia! The staff were so friendly and helpful. The grounds and pool were beautiful, well kept and clean. The rooms are set back from the main road so it was very quiet and we enjoyed listening to and seeing birds and monkeys from our balcony! Great location as well-directly across the street from the main surf break and next door to an excellent restaurant, Somos.

The villa was super cute, very clean, and the area very walkable. They had security as well, which was an added plus. Two things that could be improved— internet speed was ridiculously slow or nonexistent at times. I also asked for an iron at 6pm and they just told me, sorry housekeeping is gone until tomorrow. So the service lacked a bit there…

Aging hotel in a good location

The hotel is located in what is probably the best part of town, with relatively easy access to a good surf point (it's still a walk and a half to get to the water, but that's always the case unless you are right on the beach).

Rooms are large, but their age shows. Showers offer either good water flow or hot water, but not both. I had to basically hike to my room that was located at the top of the hill. The hotel lacks the charm and cool factor of Somos, that's right next door. It is across the street from the only \"disco\" in town, but the place seemed to be a bit of a dive.

The hotel doesn't offer late checkout at all, which I found problematic.

The property was nice. We traveled with young kids and liked having the private villas and the pool was very nice. Staff was friendly and welcoming. The beds were very firm and made sleeping through the night difficult. There is a noisy night club near by that goes late into the night but the villa keeps most the noise out. I think if the beds were more comfortable we would never even had known how late the night clubs run. Like most of Santa Teresa there is a dirt road out front which during the rain season is very muddy. But the beach is a very short walk away. Overall this stay was okay.

Our Esencia Villa Experience

Staff was very friendly, parking was convenient, and the property was clean. Our only issue was that we had the villa closest to the street. This wouldn’t have been a problem accept for the fact that there is a disco tech right across the street. The loud music and crowds on the street kept us up late into the night (or should I say early morning?) There were also restaurants on both sides that played live music late into the night.
The villas set further back on the property may not have experienced this problem.

We booked a bungalow. Upon arrival, we were given a \"2nd floor bungalow\". There is no such thing; a bungalow is, by definition, a single story detached dwelling. it does not have other stories. Any 2-unit complex is, by definition; a duplex - not a bungalow, which is what we booked and paid for.

Worst Hotel Experience of my life- beware!

Let me start by saying that I have been to over 30 countries in the past three years- I'm comfortable with anything from budget accommodations to high-end lodging. I have a small service dog that accompanies me everywhere. I contacted the hotel immediately after booking to let them know and said I would happily send over her paperwork. They assured me there would be no issue. We arrive in Santa Teresa, planning to stay at Escencia for two weeks and they kicked us out after one night, claiming a \"no pet\" policy even though they had agreed. Turns out, they are simply greedy and were attempting to charge us for 2 weeks of lodging that we did not use. They have agreed after weeks of hassle to refund only a few nights and charge us for 10 nights when we were there less than 24 hours. They knew that they would be able to book the vacancy immediately (high-season) and thus make double money. Locals in the area are aware of their penchant for kicking people out for no reason and hiding behind a no-cancellation policy. Book at your own (high) risk.
-As an aside, the rooms are also quite mildew-filled and the appliances are completely rusted over, and the hotel manager is incredibly rude. There are many beautiful places to stay in Santa Teresa- anywhere from $50 a night to hundreds. This was terrible by every account possible.

We booked this reservation at 3:40 PM we arrived one hour later and were told they could not take the reservation and he tried to contact us even though we had no email text or phone calls from this property. He said we do have a room it’s in our other property on the other end of the island I believe it was a scam. I think this guy took a reservation knowing he didn’t have a room at his seemingly nice looking resort and sent us to the next best place with literally a bed in a room PERIOD!!!! A bed in a room AC that only works with a key so you cannot cool your room down before. They say breakfast and at 7:30 am there was not even coffee. The pillows were foam pieces and the bed was just horrible. Booking a room at The Esencia means nothing!!!!! You will NOT get what is represented or shown on their website.
BUYER BEWARE!!!!! This is a scam!

Our stay here was overall quite good. The path to the beach is kitty corner from the hotel so that was convenient. It was a bit of a walk up a hill to our room which could be challenging for some, but we had no issue with it. Breakfast is delivered to the room each morning which was a nice touch, super nice to eat breakfast on the deck with a view of the gardens and pool! I found the bed to be quite hard which I didn’t love, but my partner had no issue with it so just depends on your preference. The blanket for the bed was basically just a bed sheet, which I didn’t feel was enough due to how cold the AC was in the room. The staff were super helpful and informative with booking tours/taxis/shuttles, and the place was clean. Walking distance to many different restaurants. Would definitely stay here again!

We rented one of the Villas and got the first one upon entering the grounds. Quite far from the pool but seemed ok until the nighttime. There is a club with very loud music that can go on till 3/4 am. Unfortunately we heard it first hand. The villa is basic. It needs a Reno especially the washroom.
Found some bugs and a work on the floor but not surprised. The only bonus is gated at night with security guard so you feel somewhat safe. Great sushi place next door 😀

Very nice stay. The rooms were comfortable and attractive. We enjoyed having a balcony and overlooking the pool. The pool itself was beautiful and clean. Breakfast was adequate, but not stellar - just quite basic, a few more options and better coffee would go a long way. We did have one service issue, which I thought was pretty slow in being addressed, but it was resolved to our satisfaction. Overall we enjoyed our stay and found this to be a good value and good location. I would stay here again.

This was a great experience for my family. Santa Teresa Beach is loud and dusty with all the traffic on the main road, but this place is sprawled up the hill and gives a little more privacy. The staff were great to us and helped us arrange what we needed, and the pool was very relaxing.
The cottages had everything we needed and stayed cool at night with the A/C.

This is the 3rd time we have stayed at this hotel, and while we love the location and the overall accommodations, it's clear that the owner is more interested in profits than customer service.

We were told over the phone that our room could accommodate 3 adults. However, it was later determined that it only fit 2. Rather than work with us on a solution, we were told to find another hotel for the 3rd person. Impossible, as it was a holiday week between Xmas in New Years. Final result: we paid an extra $60/night for the person to sleep on the floor on an air mattress we purchased. As there was a clear miscommunication from the hotel, we would have preferred a more accommodating solution - but we were stuck and agreed to pay an amount that was higher than a normally priced 3-person room.

Rooms are comfortable. Bathroom was ok - shower pressure was light, and toilet clogged and overflowed on the last day, forcing us to shower in another unit.

WIFI was strong both in the room and at the pool.

Pool area is very nice, however bar service was closed during our stay.

Location is great - a short walk to the beach entrance, and to several bars & restaurants.

Front desk staff was as helpful as they could be. You can tell that the owner limits what they are able to do to assist the guests.

The room was fine and AC worked well. Shower was hit & miss. Our room was on the top of a very steep hill, which is fine for us, but others will struggle.
The beach was 2 minutes away & a few restaurants nearby. Ginger was our favourite for lunch & breakfast.
The pool was clean and cool but there are no facilities there, & someone was playing obnoxious music.
Nearest shop is 10 mins walk away and no where to buy even water in the hotel. There is a fridge in the room that has 500ml water for $2 in an emergency.
The staff didn’t seem like they wanted to help & we felt like we were bugging them eveytime we asked anything.

If you like bad loud music from the local bars...

The hotel is amazing! We enjoyed it immensely until the local bars started dueling with their music. I know that the hotel cannot choose it's neighbors but the bars were horrible. The noise was so loud that we could hear every word of the obnoxiously loud music. The hotel is great but it is ruined by the music that plays until all hours and is so loud it is nearly impossible to get sleep.

Only issue was payment needs to be in cash & without transport it is a 30 minute walk each way in the heat to get to a cash machine. Thankfully I paid for the room beforehand but for spa treatments offered, minibar, breakfast etc everything is cash.
Overall a great stay though!

Wonderful, family friendly hotel near the beach

We are a family of 3, and stayed 5 nights. We found the staff were great - very helpful and hard working. They stayed out of your way, and did not try to sell you things. We did book a number of items through them (tours, transport, ATV)... and they were on the ball. We had to cancel one of our tours mid-way because my little one got sick, and they reimbursed me - which was unexpected. We loved the pool, the close access to the beach (5 min walk with a kid)... if you like partying... there’s a lot of night life close by. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay! Thanks hotel Esencia!

Great place to stay!

Place is so cool. Staff is very helpful and always smiling and saying hello. The beach access is right across the street and has one of the best beach spots in Santa. No need to get a car because you can walk everywhere but if you do they have a secure parking lot and security for extra peace of mind. Rooms were kept super clean. Pool is also great if you end up there. Plus there is a family of Monkeys that cruzed around from time to time. So rad.

A nice hotel, rooms were clean and had everything. The grounds were nice although the pool is a little smaller than it looks in the pictures but still good for getting away from the heat. The restaurant menu looked very touristy so we didn't bother. The staff although nice were not great with restaurant recommendations nor with directions. It was an nice place but possibly a little overpriced.

Ugh...ants crawling on me in bed....big ones.

No staff at night and the gardener was sympathetic but spoke no English. It was pretty clear management was not caring about the guest experience. Coffee pot was cracked through. Nice afternoon manager was the closest thing to caring, brought a replacement pot. But what if I said nothing? Terrible experience--stressful.

Nice place to go with family, very quite and peaceful... Each vila is separated, so it gives a lot of privacy to your stay. Monkeys pass by every day... It needs some improvement. The coffee maker didn't work, but the staff brought us a new one really fast. Cooking implements are not the best, but they work fine, you manage to cook, but they could improve them. The water in the shower came and go. I would install TV's for some relaxing time or to calm down the kids when they are out of the pool (:-P)... So there are little details they could do better, but it was a good place in general, probably would go back.

Great hotel in a very relaxed town....

Beautiful hotel in Santa Theresa, Costa Rica near the beach. It was located at the end of the town, quieter but still very close to the bars, restaurants, and all the action. Very clean and well maintained hotel. It was a bit of a hike up the path to get to the second floor hotel part, all stairs and no elevator. There was separate, individual units along the way to hotel that were very nice and easy to get to. I had no problems and the staff were very helpful and friendly. I will most definitely stay here again. Santa Theresa was a wonderful, lay back, friendly, easy going, no worries kinda a town. The trip to get there from Montezuma was amazing and the road was quite an adventure (hilly and parts were a dirt with lots of bumps), but that added to the fun for me. You can rent awesome ATV's or a bike to get around, but I preferred walking most places, especially on the beach, you could walk for miles. Gorgeous sunsets you don't want to miss.

My Casita was roomy and very nice, and for once in Costa Rica, attractive lighting, if still a bit on the dim side.there was only one significant problem, in that the a/c is directly over the head of the bed, and even on low you will have a forceful blast of air blowing on you all night. This could easily be fixed with a shelf between you and it to deflect the airflow if they want to.
Note that there is no TV, but other than the above problem, this is a lovely place to stay in Santa Teresa.

ST itself is kind of a strange place. There is no town, just a very long stretch of a pot holed road with places along it. There is no center of gravity, or central place to head to at night. I wish I had stayed in Montezuma instead.

Make sure you print out your online booking. The girl at the desk had no record despite email correspondence. The villa we stayed in had a full kitchen, large bed, air conditioning, porch and hammock. The beach is across the street and down a short path. There is a surf shop across the street for convenient rental.. $10/day.
My only complaints were the ants in the room (excusable seeing as how it is the jungle) and the pounding of the all night disco across the street. This didn't seem to bother my girlfriend but I lost some sleep.
Otherwise, I would highly recommend Escencia. It was our nicest stay in Costa Rica!!

Also, there are monkeys around! We spotted one in the palm above our villa.
You will hear the howlers in the morning and see them in the trees from the pool area.

Awesome place for my family!

We had a fabulous time here. My family and I stayed in a villa. Surf breaks right across the street! Hotel staff was great! Marta made our trip there really awesome, she was so sweet and it was nice to have friendly faces working. The pool was kept clean and my 2yr old loved it because there was a kiddie part, only a couple feet deep. A super bonus that I didnt realize we would need, since this was the first place we stayed, was a clothes line so you can easily hang your clothes out to dry like swim suits and rash guards... Anyways we super enjoyed our stay at escencia. We'll be back and invite others!

This is a nice, clean, quiet, well-maintained place to stay. I've traveled a lot through Lat Am and it is one of the better rural-area hotels. We stayed in a cabin, w/ spotty internet, a very large bed, two small beds, closet, full bath, mini-fridge, sink, blender, toaster, and basic dishes. The grounds are lovely but smells heavily of chemicals d/t all of the ants on the grounds. Howler monkeys parade by every day between 3-4:30pm. You are a two minute walk to the beach. You are a 5 minute walk from several restaurants/small grocery store.

Terrible customer service

It is a nice place poorly managed, we did not have a good stay thanks to their lack of customer service. First thing that went wrong is we didnt get what we paid for, we paid for a Villa and we got a Room way in the back of the property on a hill and then on a second floor, I took the time to complain about it but the reception was already closed, the guard who was very nice Luis took his cell phone and called the manager (he was never around), he said he was sorry but Hotels.com made a mistake ... weird ... then he said he would give me $17 dollars back, which I didnt really wanted, I wanted the room I reserved, then as a super customer service approach he offered a free breakfast, they served a poor Cornflakes cereal and toasts. I told him that every time I book thru hotels.com they are very careful to accommodate me in a place children safe, he's answer was that he had to be nice to other clients and close the gate so that I wouldnt make noice with my car and wake people up ... didnt really understood his answer ... I was not only complaining about how far away the room was I was also complaining about the dangerous stairs, balcony and scorpion on the room. After dinner I had to wake up my son and make him walk sleepy about half a mile from the parking lot to the room, I think guests would have prefered my car than my crying son, up many stairs and trail to get to the room, I dont find that good customer care. Staff other than Irving the manager (who is terrible) was ok.

great for the price

Loved this place, pretty clean minus the shower. Also the room didnt have a Tv and wifi you can only get out in the commons area and pool area so they really need to invest in an extender. Other than that it was quiet and nice.

Very clean and beautiful place

This place was far above what we expected for the price that was charged. The pictures we saw online before going did not make it justice. Don't expect luxury, but the room was clean and pretty new - much better than many similar places I've been to. The pool area is very nice and we even saw plenty of monkies and lizards around the house, very cool. The beach is just across the street, and as there are no accomodations on the beach here, it doesn't get much better. The only downside was that it was a bit too far from the grocery store to walk, due to the dusty road in Santa Teresa. If I go back to the area, I will definately stay here again!

We would stay there again.

The grounds were lovely and it offered a nice refuge from the mayhem of the dirt road. The pool was wonderful. Our upgraded room was much better than the standard room for only a little more $ per night which included a decent kitchenette. The front-desk staff could have been a bit warmer and more knowledgable. Overall, not bad but not superb.

Nice bungalows, noisy neighbours

This hotel has everything right, good location, nice welle equipped bungalows, a very nice pool area. I liked it.

But... it does not have control over it's neighbour accross the road which is a bar with daily programs. Expect loud music if you have on of the bungalows close to the road. Or join the fun !

Emplacement revé ! La plage et les spots de surf à 1mn à pied. La piscine, la douche extérieur juste parfait. Le logement en soit n’ a rien d’extraordinaire mais le juste nécessaire y est présent ! Dans tous le cas, le lieu est juste là où il faut être !

Bom custo benefício em santa teresa

Local do hotel é bem próximo ao acesso à praia e ao point de surf Zeneidas. Hotel bem espaçoso em meio à natureza. Os quartos são na parte alta do terreno, há que caminhar na subida e ainda subir uma escada, os chalés tem acesso mais fácil. Piscina agradável em meio à natureza. Quartos espaçosos e limpos, banheiros merecem uma renovação (dos quartos), alguns não tem janela. Não tem local para cafe da manhã, mas nos arredores tem várias boas opções. Dá para fazer tudo a pé por perto do hotel.

Muy buena atención, no había nadie más hospedado por lo que teníamos el hotel para nosotros, aunque estaba vacío hacían limpieza de todas las habitaciones diariamente, la piscina estaba limpia, la atención fue muy buena. La cama es muy cómoda y se duerme de maravilla.
