Hummingbirds, right at my doorstep! Hummingbird garden

Appreciative I had been upgraded by Alamo with a 4 x 4, taking me to the top of the mountain. I am in decent shape. I preferred walking the paths at the top of the mountain having ridden to those trail heads.

This includes parking at the top and walking down to the overlook platform beautiful fuse

So much cooler 10 to 15° perfect hiking weather never above 70°F and contrast with my days by the coast not humid not hot

Bug spray would’ve been nice part for stormed with mosquitoes on the parts not at all

Enjoy the location as well. Enjoyed and appreciated many other places to eat and walk within a few minutes drive

Savegre was unbelievable. Their attention to every detail exceeded all of our expectations. Their staff was very kind and attentive, going above and beyond to ensure our needs were met. We also did the 4 hour quetzal/birding tour which was great. I would definitely return to this spot. One tip for travelers, it was cold so be prepared!

This is a lovely property. I had been there several years ago and loved it, but it's been refreshed and updated since then and is now even better. It's an eco-lodge with relatively plain but delightful, soulful rooms, a great restaurant, and. . utterly surrounded by nature at its best. Not pretentious, but quietly luxurious.

The drive to get to the hotel (5 miles) is very difficult. Took us 30 min for 5 miles.

Great breakfast and happy hour. Staff are very friendly and even help us look for quetzals in their garden. We are lucky to see this beautiful quetzal twice in their property.

I get that it's a pristine natural reserve. Savegre and the staff are great. It's beautiful there. Self guided hiking is great. However, prices for food and drink are really high for what you get. The beds/pillows and bathrooms were not super, they were ok. If the food/drinks were a little cheaper I'd give it 5 stars because it's an amazing place.

The hotel is very well kept as the surroundings. The food selection is very good and the prices are fair. There are a lot of activities for guests such as bird watching, hiking trails, horseback riding. There is also a Spa that offers diverse services. Excellent place to relax by the River Savegre. I would definitely come back.

Perfect experience. Room , the gardens, the serenity, the service, the restaurant. Absolutely worth the visit. They arranged a Quetzal viewing tour which was very successful. The public road down to the hotel is ok but needs to be driven carefully.

Room was comfortable. No view from room. Pretty area with gardens around walkways. Not a lot of outside seating areas. Most rooms are a walk uphill a ways. Not many have close parking.

Trails uphill behind resort. 4x4 drive to upper parking was in good shape and looked good enough for 2 wheel when dry.

Dining was fine, with good service. Trout was good, though I think it was better for lunch up the road at the next cafe.

Bar area has seating and fire. Happy hour 3-5.

The resort seems to do a lot of large bus groups. Dining room was full with 4 tables of 10-15 people and just a handful of couples at other tables.

There were gadens along the pathto the rooms where you can observe the birds. We even had a Quetzal one morning in the property

We loved the restaurant, the food, the staff. We loved the hiking opportunities, the flowers, the birds. We loved the hike to our room. We loved the setting - it’s quite a drive there- a beautiful drive to a beautiful destination. We loved our room- very quiet, lovely view we loved “Feathers”, the beautiful garden with the birds. We loved our quetzal tour and also “Batsu”, the other beautiful garden with lots of gorgeous birds. We loved everything.

We had the most incredible three-day stay at the Savegre thanks to the gorgeous surroundings and incredibly kind and attentive staff! The rooms are not large, but they are thoughtfully designed with a sitting area, beautiful large bathroom with tub, and a little porch bench out front facing the lovely garden. The breakfast buffet was outstanding, offering typical dishes as well as American and European choices. We hiked all of the well-kept trails, and saw birds of all kinds. But the icing on the already delicious cake was seeing many Quetzals on the property each morning at breakfast. We could not have asked for a better stay in this magical place!

Nice & comfortable rooms. The beautiful property has a protected reserve with many trails. Lots of bird watching opportunities. We saw the resplendent quetzals several time from the property and couple of times while dining in their restaurant. They arrange good guides for bird watching/ treks etc. decent food options & they also have a spa on property.

Shame it has gone downhill so much

Considering how much they charge per room per night we were quite disappointed bed old piillows old sheets had holes in them towels were almost rags that they were so worn. Clearly in need of money EVERYTHING was an extra cost. We were hear 4 years ago when Feather garden was free now $5, small plant area $2 to view the cactus.Tours etc everything other than breakfast is extra. The area birds etc were amazing. Breakfast was the only pleasent experience. Again the Wifi hardly works.

Bird Watcher's Paradise Hidden in a Quiet Valley

We went here with another couple and enjoyed 2 junior suites next to one another without other rooms nearby. Everything was great: room, staff, food. We especially loved the birding tour with Julian Fernandez which started at 5:15 AM to look for quetzals (which we saw) and after breakfast we continued with the tour until 11. Julian was so knowledgable and took the time to explain many fascinating things about birds. This is definatly a bird watcher's paradise. I used the hot tub and even enjoyed watching birds through the big glass windows surrounding the hot tub.

outstanding property ! pictures do not do it justice. Excellent stay, wonderful and gorgeous little town for bird watching, hiking, and some fly fishing. Staff was helpful and friendly. Very large and tasty breakfast with everything from French toast and fruit to Gallo pinto and chicken in salsa. There was a little sports field on the property where were my 9 yr old and I played soccer in between other activities. Room has a large soaking tub with a spa vibe. Truly an amazing place and will be back!

Sin duda volveríamos, solo cambiaría el colchon que no es tan cómodo cómo el trogon lodge, un 9 de 10, no les doy el 10 porque nos enviaron a una habitación demasiado lejos con ningún tipo de vista, casi todas las habitaciones tenían un jardín pequeño pero la que nos dieron aparte de largo del restuatante no tenía jardín de ningun tipo, estaba descuidado

Such a beautiful resort deep in the mountains of Costa Rica!!! We all got massages with the sound of the river nearby. Very easy to reserve massages & dinner.
The food for dinner & breakfast was delicious. The rooms were cozy and set up nicely. We drove up the trail to an overlook which had incredible views. They also have lots of hiking options. The staff was all very friendly and helpful

One of the best places I have ever visited and the cost did not reflect anything. Located in the bottom of a valley surrounded by bird life and greenery I felt like I was in heaven. The rooms are superb, the service is outstanding and the food is delicious and not overly priced. I was going to stay an extra day but decided to move on, only because it suited our itinerary better. I would live here if I could. Don’t forget to take time for yourself in the spa which isn’t over priced either and make use of the treks which offer stunning scenery and seclusion in a rain forest! Stunning!!

A lovely place to stay in a beautiful location.

You need to travel about 9 kilometers down a very steep and switchbacked road to get to Savegre, but it's worth it! We had a 4 wheel drive vehicle and were happy that we did. The rooms are spacious and have a fireplace as it can get chilly up at these elevations. There are wonderful trails that you can drive up to (about 2 kilometers from the hotel). Or you can just wander around the premises and down to the fast flowing stream. If you are looking to see the Resplendent Quetzals when in Costa Rica, they were right at the hotel! The staff were extremely friendly and helpful with excellent command of English (although we awere able to practice our Spanish with them too). Alehandra and Juliet were great at the front desk!

Lugar que aunque se vaya una y otra vez nunca defrauda, mejora a día a día sus instalaciones, el servicio de todos y cada uno de los colaboradores es insuperable, desde las chicas del lobby, hasta el botón del hotel. Clima espectacular, vimos al invitado infaltable, el quetzal, por doquier. Las habitaciones siempre lindas, el majestuoso cerro o masizo de lauerte siempre imponente. El lunar ha sido, y sigue siendo la gastronomía, la cual SIN duda debe mejorar, un restaurante TAN hermoso que tiene con su espectacular remodelación, no puede tener la decadente comida que debía ofreció. Por ese detalle y sin dejar de retroalimentar, Savegre será visitado siempre.

This was our worst stay in CR. Access road in extremely rough. Waiting staff rude, insolent and insincere. Food boring, overpriced and not enjoyable and pestered often by staff to reserve for dinner. Basic spa services had to be paid for-$50 for 2 people to use a crappy old hot tub for 1 hour. Room was dated and at night with heater on still freezing cold. The bed was something we should make prisoners sleep on- coil springs sticking out that never gave me a nights sleep. Complaints to staff did nothing.

This is a wonderful resort property in its own right, but the \"Feathers Garden\" (owned by a local bird guide named Mervin and right on the property) for $5/day/person offers bananas and hummingbird feeders to local birds, and draws a huge number of species. It was such a pleasure to sit there and see/photograph so many species!

Savegre is unique in the area for owing a private trail network which is super handy.

The grounds of the hotel are also very pretty, and the upgraded restaurant and bar are nice hangouts. The two main issues are a boring cuisine (typical for Costa Rica) and somewhat old rooms that are not well ventilated and l smell of smoke (from the fireplaces)

Some dishes in the restaurant were not as good as expected and others better. Their version of Huevoa Rancheros is my favorite ever! This place is worth the trip.

Everything about this property is absolutely beautiful and magical. Rooms are great spacious and clean, grounds are immaculately landscaped, with so many varieties of plants attracting hummingbirds squirrels and many species of birds and insects. The variety of private trails are unmatched, breakfast is excellent, staff is superb and so kind and friendly. Other quests were incredibly nice as well.
I wish we knew how magical this place would be when we planned our trip. We would have stayed at least for 4 days. We saw a female Quetzal on one of the trees close to our room. <3 unforgettable. Thank you!

I have stayed at this hotel 4x in 4 different rooms and want to address a previous review that accuses the property of ‘bed bugs in the sheets’. I’m from nyc and the city had a bb issues years ago..unfortunately I had the experience. I’m allergic and know my bug bites. This property doesn’t have bedbugs. I’m very allergic to bb bites specifically, as they will put me in the hospital. That said;costa rica has bugs &you can’t change that. The bites that look like bbugs are not-they’re one of a few:red ants, sand fleas, chiggers, or mosquitoes. Chiggers are in the area(at the waterfalls) and will get your torso-often near seams in your clothing-like ticks do. Ants seems so innocent but wow..they actually sting and bite at the same time-the spots will blister-and can look like bedbugs. Also, sand fleas are all over Costa Rica and can show up the next day(like many bites can including chiggers). They can last 3-4 weeks and blister as well. Please don’t accuse or freak people out over bedbugs-that’s just wrong. They are an entirely different issue and are not at this resort. Again, not only am I from nyc where we know bbugs, but I’ve had an incident in FL that made news. I can assure anyone that hates bugs as much as I, there are no bedbugs here. Period. This hotel is amazing. There’s no possible way that the staff was condescending. However, I can definitely imagine some of my fellow Americans accusing of bedbugs and not getting the rise they expected. Smh..

I love this hotel for so many reasons. The location is incredible. They have their own hiking trails and a beautiful lookout spot that even has windows out to the rainforest from the bathrooms. The trails have incredible trees packed with wildlife. We didn’t see sloths or monkeys but so many different types of birds. One of my favorite parts of the restaurant is their restaurant. The breakfast is absolutely delicious, never had lunch, the dinner is one of the best I have had in Costa Rica. Some of my friends that live there second that. The gardens on the grounds are so well-maintained and attract the prettiest hummingbirds I’ve ever seen. The flowers that bloom at night makes the entire property smell like magic. In the past I have written a review that complained about the quality of the beds. The beds in the room I had this time we’re so comfortable! If you run into an issue with the bed not working for you, ask for a different room because they do have nice beds and some of the units. Parking is easy, the entire property is safe and private. Eco-friendly aspects: this property should win an award, if they have not already. They do everything right. The Sebago River is so pretty, so clean and Costa Rican‘s are very proud of the trout farm located just below the hotel. If you skipped going to Monte Verde cloud forest, you can make up for the experience here as the clouds come Through the forest and out again. The sun always seems to be shining here, but it’s not hot.perfect

Such a beautiful property with private trails in old growth forests. They have a viewing platform that feels so peaceful. It’s well manicured with gorgeous flowers and trees throughout the property. One of the best restaurants in all of Costa Rica.

Eco tourism at it’s finest..except one big one..the beds. Doesn’t fit the atmosphere and other amenities to have such horrible beds. The wires are literally touching your skin with a sheet between. From lying down, I could literally strum the wires with my thumb to make that spring noise. I had to fold up the comforter and extra blanket on top of the bed, and sleep with a sheet. Basically I needed a sleeping pad.

Tico customers may be used to this, but many tourists are not-and many of us are tall and thin..they simply don’t understand or care about good mattresses, because you can’t see that discomfort in a photo prior to booking. Not enough people have complained. When we are hiking and pushing it on vaca, guests need a quality sleep. Savegere misses the point.

So yes, I’ll stay here again, but I’ll bring a sleeping pad for the bed. You’ve been warned.

Quite a feat to actually get to the property from the main #2 road but surely worth it. The grounds are great and the trails very nice (total of about 10mi of marked trails accessible to guests). Stayed when all the ornamental garlic was blooming so got he added benefit of \"fragrant\" garden in front of our room :-). The room had a fireplace, which we used, but (1) the available wood was very wet and keeping the fire going was a hard job (2) previous guests clearly tried as well but did not succeed so the room smelled of old smoke. We wanted to hike up the Cerro de a Muerte (a guide is officially required) but what the lodge offers is actually a ride up to the top in a vehicle and then a guided walk back down, which to us defies a purpose of hiking so we did not do it (plus, the fee was steep). Got lucky spotting a bunch of quetzals about a mile away from the lodge.
