Such a unique property…truly a once in a lifetime experience staying in a cave hotel. If you want a 5 star hotel then look elsewhere; however, if you want charming, family-run old world charm, this is your place. The gentleman (and his dog) who ran the place were very kind and welcoming. The location was amazing with one of the best viewpoints of Matera steps outside of our door. Short walk to central square and restaurants/shops. We parked at a parking lot outside of ZTL and walked in (lots of stairs so be prepared)! Cave room was unique. Only thing (which was mentioned in prior reviews) is that room is a little damp (& sheets get a little damp) from the humid conditions of the cave, which we were prepared for & did not think was a huge problem. Great stay! And Matera is amazing!

Cave B&B.
Right at the heart of old Matera city.
Driving there is not possible, so either have a small luggage or be ready to drag the luggage through medieval streets.
There’s a Maison or Casa Cava that is close to drive by to load and unload the luggages, but still hard to drive to. Just a heads up.
The host speaks little English.
Breakfast has a great selection and very fresh.

The staff was fabulous; both helpful and kind. We were unaware that caves are humid, which was our naivete. Breakfast was ample. Our cave was large and had lots of places to sit comfortably, inside and out. The only reason the stay was not 100% excellent was the humidity inside the cave despite running dehumidifiers and air conditioning. Having a sweet dog on premises was a bonus!

What an absolute dream stay! The apartment was so unique and quaint and charming! Federico was the kindest host! He was friendly, professional, helpful, and genuine. The room was SO quaint! Spacious. Plenty of amenities. Comfortable bed. Air conditioning was sufficient. We could walk everywhere we wanted to go. The breakfast in the morning was delicious and more than ample. I would absolutely stay at this residence again!

Having the experience of being able to stay in a "cave" was a something we will never forget. The first room we had, had so much humidity that the sheets and comforter was damp. We did not sleep well at all. The next night we went to another hotel to get some sleep. The third night we were moved to another room which was fine. They were very nice about moving us.

We recently stayed at Residence San Pietro Barisano and we were extremely disappointed with our experience. The hotel advertised that parking was included, but upon arrival, we discovered that this was not the case. We had sent an email inquiring about parking, but received no response. When we called the hotel, they informed us that they were too busy to reply to emails and we would have to park outside the city and either take a bus or walk to the residence.

Upon entering our room, we immediately noticed a damp smell and the bedding felt cold and wet. When we brought this to the attention of the receptionist, they responded in an arrogant manner, claiming that there was no humidity in the room and that it was only cold.

Furthermore, the bathroom was dusty and the toilet rolls had not been changed, with leftover rolls from previous guests still present.

The breakfast offered at the hotel was very disappointing. The selection consisted of a few cakes, some yogurt, and Kellogg's cereal. The orange juice tasted extremely acidic and was not enjoyable at all. Additionally, the only non-sweet option for breakfast was a banana, which seemed to be a few days old.

Overall, we cannot recommend this hotel. While the location is perfect, the subpar accommodations and unprofessional behavior of the reception staff made our stay unbearable. It simply was not worth the money.

The room itself was beautiful but the humidity in the room was unbearable. The air conditioning and dehumidifier in the room should always be left on so that all the humidity and smell is removed from the room. The furniture was damp along with the bed covers and pillows.

Host was friendly and other staff were polite, they took the trouble to use translate so they could communicate. Breakfast is the italian way so cake and coffee. Different experience. Definitely feels like a cave room. No replies from the hotel to any of the messages. Asked about getting to property and parking and received no response. Hotel is very hard to get to, many steep steps to carry luggage and musty smell in the room. Nice breakfast is offered and bathroom was clean. Air conditioner was loud and sheets felt wet. It was ok for a one night stay but probably couldn’t do any more than that. We parked close to the top of the steps as shown on the photos of the hotel description and now just hope that no fines would be issued for it’s a ZTL zone - no driving zone. But hotel is not responding to confirm

Room in a cave

Traveling in a post covid world can leave you a bit anxious. Staying at this nice little hotel in Matera during this tine was perfect. We checked in and were centrally located to all of the picturesque places of the gorgeous city. The hotel was clean and perfect for us. My favorite part was the shower. The only thing I can complain was that it felt a bit damp in our room but I run warm and I knew I was sleeping in a cave.

It is a very unique grotto with lots of room and interestingly decorated. However, It is located in the middle of a hill. Parking on top was very difficult to obtain. We had to park quite ways, walk down several flies of stairs with our luggage. It is not for anyone with accessibility issues. Walking up and down the whole town was fun though.

The hotel is in a converted cave dwelling and beautifully restored. Rooms are spacious, cozy and very comfortable and very unique. Dining room is tastefully decorated.
The hotel is inside the Matera Sassi cave complex. Parking is non existent and to reach the hotel steep and uneven steps have to be negotiated. Tricky even on dry days. Impossible to reach for individuals with physical limitations.

An opportunity to stay in a Sasso in Matera could have been better. There was a musty smell that only dissipated with a scented candle burning. The space was roomy, comfortable and clean. The breakfast was mediocre with dry pastries from a previous dinner at the owner’s Restaurant, tea, coffee, juice and fruit salad. Don’t expect any help with luggage from the private parking area. There was not any help even offered! 2 young workers passed us by enroute kn our way from the parking lot with our bags. We paid €165 for 3 people in the off-season. The maximum it is worth for 3 is €60 total for 3. Don’t pay anymore. Would I stay here again? No. I would not stay in s damp sasso. I would stay in a regular hotel. Would I recommend it to others? Only if s first time and at maximum of €60 per night for 3.

This property doesn't have any parking whatsoever. You have to find a free parking spot outside the old town (good luck) . You can't get to the property by car. No matter what kind of room you pay for, you will get whatever is available. Breakfast was basic.

Beautifully designed Masseria next to archeological park of Paestum. The grounds are lovely, the Masseria is spotless and the service is very good. The rooms are nice and contemporary but are a bit sterile (also, despite the non-smoking signs, both our rooms had a slight smell of stale cigarettes). I would recommend warming up the rooms with some art - a local photographer would create a needed intimacy and unique flare. Just a suggestion.

First time visit to Matera for family of six

Having never visited Matera before the intent to visit and stay in the old part of Matera was based on recommendation from friends and hotel found using Expedia.

Based on our experience over a three day period in late March, all of the recommendations and comments provided by other reviewers are generally accurate, however, as always each particular visit will be unique and takes into account personal preference.

The hotel was a little bit difficult to find and is located within a pedestrian, limited traffic zone.
As indicated by the hotel parking is free, however this is not designated hotel parking and is public parking which is approximately a 10 - 15 minute walk away. Not an issue, but you must be careful where you park, as most of the parking is either designated or pay as you stay. The staff were very helpful in pointing out where the free parking was available.

This being our first hotel stay in Matera, it was very well presented and appeared to meet traditional cave dwelling design and standards. The staff were very friendly and helpful on arrival and the hotel had a cosy family Italian feel about it.

The self contained apartment (cave) was ideal for a family of six with all the facilities that we needed for the two nights.

We celebrated a birthday on the first night in the hotel restaurant and the staff were very professional and attentive.

The menu and breakfast was simple, well presented Italian food, but extremely tasty.

We could stay again at this hotel.

I would not recommend this hotel, especially given that there are any number of cave hotels in Matera. While the room was a cave and a certain amount of moisture is to be expected, our room was unbearably damp. There was no AC at all. There was dehumidifier, but it was clear that it hadn't been turned on in many days. Our pillows were damp, the blankets were damp, everything was damp. It was humid and uncomfortable. Neither me nor my partner could sleep. We sweated all night.

The wifi did not work in our room. The website said free parking but that actually meant there was free parking in the new part of two 15 min away and didn't make that clear. Our price didn't include the Euro 4 tourism tax. The check in person was very gruff with us.

Definitely not worth $120.

This is castle. An honest to goodness, real castle

Bovino is a sweet, little mountain town crowned by the castle at its highest point. Great panoramas of the valley below are visible throughout and especially, from the windows in our room. As you might imagine the rooms have high ceilings and lovely light filtered through gauzy curtains. The staff are amiably curious and ready to assist with whatever you need to make your stay as close to perfect as possible.

Be aware there is NO car parking at this hotel or anywhere near it in spite of what the information says. You have to park your car at a car park about 5 km away and catch a shuttle bus then walk.

Fue la peor experiencia que hemos tenido, llegar Al sitio reservado, luego de muchas hora de manejo y encontrarse con el sitio cerrado sin alguien que lo reciba y atienda. A las 8:00 pm tuvimos que pasar por la terrible necesidad de buscar un sitio donde hospedarnos u caminar una larga distancia para llegar ahí. Al día siguiente lejos de disculparse cuestionaron nuestra llegada.

En spændende oplevelse at bo i en hule, men koldt og klamt. Der kørte en affugter hele tiden, men der var 76% luftfugtighed og temperaturen i rummet var 16 grader.( altså ikke varme , som der står over faciliteter). Hotellet er svært at finde da det ligger ned af bjergsiden. Mange trapper, så hotellet er IKKE egnet for dårligt gående. Biler må ikke køre ind i lokalområdet fra kl 10- 20,30, så der blev parkeret langt væk( og ikke som der står at der er gratis parkering). Restauranten var lukker under hele opholdet.

Il residence è situato a 2 minuti dal parcheggio (strisce blu) dove abbiamo lasciato l auto per i 2 giorni di permanenza 0,50 centesimi l ora

Il proprietario nn so neanche come si chiama nn si è presento.
La camera pulita , bagno sarebbe opportuno mettere un doccia al posto della vasca adibita a doccia varie capocciate al soffione,le tende da cambiare ormai ammuffite.
Nota negativa la stanza era attaccata al ristorante e nonostante le pietre di tufo si sentiv la musica ad alto volume fino alle 00.30
Poi ridevano e scherzavano fino alle 2 di notte nn curanti dell nostra presenza visto l orario volevamo dormire.
Avrei gradito essere avvisata magari avrei acquistato dei tappi per le orecchie

Fantastico

Autentica esperienza dentro a un vero sasso. L'accoglienza del signor Vincenzo impeccabile. É stato gentilissimo e disponibilissimo. Ottima la colazione con i dolci fatti da lui. La sua "aiutante" Peggy ( una cagnolina deliziosa), é docilissima e sempre pronta a prendersi un coccolina. Il panorama dal residence é in assoluto il più bello di Matera, sia di notte che di giorno. La struttura in generale totalmente raccomandabile. Ringraziamo ancora il signor Vincenzo.

Odeur d’ humidité dans les chambres
Malgré qu’elles soit très propres et très belles
Réservation de souper prévu sur place , mais n’ a pas eu lieu car pas de chef cuisinier .
Réception à l’ accueil , décevante .
On avait l’ impression de déranger .

On’ avais pris option demi- pension, restaurant fermé. Arranger vous avec le stationnement. Bref je ne recommande pas cet établissement

Belle expérience troglo

Accueil serviable, car l’accès à l'établissement est difficile . La chambre est superbe et nous pensons bien avoir été surclassé. Nous n'avons pas profité du restaurant, dommage. On pouvait s'attendre à mieux pour le petit déjeuner; Un superbe séjour et une belle expérience troglo.

Great experience

The saty was great. The place is beautiful and very comfortable and spotlessly clean.
Breakfast is delicious and quite generous. The cakes, desserts, bread and coffee are amazing.
A warm welcome.
However, I had some trouble with the wifi connection. This a minor problem that as long as it can be resolved, it's not a big deal. The thing is that when i said there was a problem with the wifi, the owner acted a bit angry (don't know if it was his iyalian manners) but he didn't stop telling me it was my smartphone problem and not his hotel. After several minutes of complete mistrust, he came into my room and in a very uppity attitude, showed me his Facebook account on his personal phone. He tried for a while for it to refresh the feed but never did. He eventually realized it was not my fault and it was his. Again, it's not a big deal but it made me feel bad. He never apologized for his behavior. He later fixed the problem.
Moral: the idea is not to find out whose fault it is but what the problem is and solve it asap.
Thanks for everything. I'm sure you'll act differently next time.

Location fantastica , Matera ed il sasso Barisano meravigliosi .
Abbiamo pagato 124 , e siamo stati anche fortunati a trovare una stanza libera , per una stanza in grotta , decisamente affascinante, ma sciatta , sporca ed umidissima.
Arredata decisamente male !
Un luogo così ha immense potenzialità con un minimo di buon gusto ed impegno .
Anche la colazione ci ha deluso , un cappuccino in Italia dovrebbero saperlo fare anche i bambini !
Matera è meravigliosa, veniteci tutti !
