The most well established and largest hotel in Tonga, with a great location on the waterfront just near the heart of Nuku’Alofa - with easy access to restaurants, shops, the central market, the palace and offices. The hotel has a pool and a restaurant, but the menu is very limited and the lobby bar was not open when I was there. My oceanfront room was pretty good, but not that spacious for the high price, there was no comfortable lounge chair and noise drifted up from events downstairs. Staff were friendly and kind - but there need to be more of them to support the high number of guests and functions.

Disappointed and Underdelivered – Not Worth the Price
For the price point, Tanoa did not meet the expectations set by its marketing. Upon arrival, there was no assistance with luggage—something you might reasonably expect from a hotel in this category. Check-in was disorganized; I had to ask for my room key, the guys seemed like he wasn’t bothered to explain anything.
The room itself left much to be desired. The bed sheets were stained, and several power outlets didn’t work. Amenities were minimal—limited to body wash, shampoo, and conditioner. Towels were never provided proactively; I had to request them daily. On two occasions, I even had to ask for toilet paper. Noise was also a serious issue—one night I was startled awake by a loud argument from a neighboring room due to the paper-thin walls.
The in-room TV didn’t work, seemingly relying on internet streaming, yet no basic aerial channels were available. This limited even the simplest in-room entertainment.
Breakfast offerings were basic and repetitive—eggs, bacon, tinned spaghetti, fried rice, sausages, bread, and a small fruit selection. I also ordered a coffee from the café that never arrived.
There is no room service available, which means guests have no choice but to queue at the restaurant—even just to order a slice of cake. Staff were visibly overwhelmed, trying to meet demand. Pricing was also excessive: $9 for a can of Coke and $23 for a slice of cheesecake.

My husband and 11 month old daughter checked in only to come in to our room given away. They gave me a credit for food and beverage use only, but did not use f&b as we were only there for one night. If any hotel does this just refund the room rate. Wasted my $350 usd on this hotel, therefor deserved a 1 star.

Bathroom not properly cleaned in two days (dead cochroaches under vanity unit), cabinet door for refrigerator access wouldn't close properly. Rooms and hallways are tiled making any noise louder. The Tanoa was an amazing hotel to stay at. The staff there were the best we experienced in our 5 different stays on this trip - so helpful, happy and accommodating. The breakfast included was second to none. The only downside was the pool closing early and the parking in the back of the hotel - the road in needs repair.

More towels need to be available, so that this doersn't happen. cleaned. Wifi is poor, however there is work going on in Tonga to upgrade to a 5G network. Fairly limited food menu. Need more choices, as you quickly work through eveything on the menu. Need better service channel around tourism information. It was hard to find any useful information. The receprion tried hard to help. This is a missed opportunity for the hotel.

Good hospitality but limited options for food

Overall in my two weeks stay, the only glitch was their menu and the noise control. It was noisy till late night inside and outside the hotel. Their menu was pretty limited and the specials menu were quite repetitive. The best part was their own vegetable garden from where they sourced the ingredients. I had one of the best churros. The staff were really very hospitable, friendly and efficient.

Helpful staff who changed our rooms twice. Once because the pool view room was more roof than pool and secondly because renovations were being done and a worker was using a motor on the roof outside our room. The main problem with the room was that one member picks up towels first thing when you are at breakfast but clean towels are not returned until after lunch so you cant dry your hands when using the bathroom between those times.

I chose this hotel as it is advertised as being waterfront. You have to cross the road to a rocky,oily beach.
The rooms are noisy with doors slamming shut unless held to close quietly. I had neighbours who moved chairs at night which made a scraping sound.
Was very difficult to get information from reception staff about facillities and tours etc.

Overall the Tanoa is a great hotel, nice staff, clean and tidy with good facilities and amenities.They let themselves down by ridgedly sticting to the rule of no refunds. Because of circumstances beyond our control we had to cancel a booking made through Expedia. Those circumstance caused us to stay at the Tanoa for four days just not the day we had to cancel. No refund or credit towards our extra days of stay. Tanoa tried to say it was Expedia's policy which was not true. Expedia were great they tried to get the refund but the Tanoa wouldnt come to the party. Very disappointing behaviour.

Tanoa international hotel is very convenient to everything in town. We had a short trip 4 days only and we had a good time, we didn’t spend much time in the hotel, breakfast was ok to start to start off your day only if comes with the room rate, otherwise it’s expensive, food in the pool area are expensive too. The hotel needs to upgrade all their linens, our first night when we went to bed there was a big stain on the mattress cover and also the sheets, we called the staff and showed it to them, they apologised and changed it on the spot. We appreciate it. The next day my daughter in law was telling us they lots of stains in their sheets too. The air conditioner works well and water pressure in the shower was good. The hotel is definitely not a 5 star, to me it’s 2 stars hotel.

We used Tania’s laundry services. For 35 paanga, they will do your laundry. Well, our clothes came back shrunk and spotted with detergent. The clothes were wadded up into a ball for delivery. Even after rewashing, some of my shirts were stained.

They also charge morw than double for sodas you can get at the market right next door.

That being said, they have a huge breakfast buffet every morning that saved our lives. The pool is also very fun.

Lots of pros staying at Tanoa Nuku’alofa and a handful of cons.

Pros: Super convenient location, easy walk to town, restaurants, markets, easy 20 min walk to catch ferry boat to Pangaimotu. Having breakfast (great options) at the hotel was a major plus (especially traveling with 3 children), plus utilized their restaurant for an occasional lunch and dinner. Food was excellent. Room AC worked great. Hot water for showers felt so good (considering hot water is a luxury in Tonga). Wifi worked well for the majority of our stay (4 nights). The service and staff (at restaurant and room turnover service) was excellent! They brought us an extra bed for our family of 5. Appreciated that immensely. In house ATM, and ability to exchange a bit of money at the front desk. Amazing ocean view from our two rooms.

Cons: On 2 of our nights, it was really noisy. There was a celebration and live band (which we were made aware of) that played past what we were notified of. The after party were many and loud. I am Tongan and I get that Tongans enjoy life, laugh and have fun (and I love that) but it is frustrating when we’ve had a long day of travel and we cant manage to sleep because of the noise. Tanoa front desk told us that they had done all they could… We also were roomed next to a wedding party that was up at 5:30am one morning getting ready and blasting their music… super inconsiderate.

Overall TANOA is a super convenient place to stay but is not a quiet option.

Across the beach and 5 mins to market. Staff are very nice and accommodating. Always has a smile in their face and very efficient if you need or want anything. The people are what make Tonga so special. Other than that, do not expect anything amazing. The breakfast buffet is adequate and the staff are what make your breakfast experience memorable. The restaurant is often out of ingredients so your first or second choice for lunch or dinner is often not avaliable. This is common across Tongan hospitality.

Two wheelchair accessible rooms where the drainage hasn't been configured very well and the bathroom floors flood during your shower. The tiles when wet are dangerously slippery throughout the room. During the storm our room flooded and necessitated that we change rooms at 1am in the morning.

Outdoor furniture is very comfortable and high quality however the atmosphere definitely lacked, very rarely music being played to create the atmosphere.

I wish they would pick better times of the day or even night than the middle of
the afternoon to drain the sewage tanks by the pool and bar. The smell was unbearable.

The house keeping is very slow to clean rooms often in our room upwards of an hour and the room is still not cleaned. The towels are washed rather than replaced daily meaning your room is without towels for up to 6 hours a day. The cups and dishes are not cleaned in the rooms. The housekeeping staff also speak in Tongan in front of you and giggle which I found a bit unprofessional.

The gym is hardly functional, never cleaned and equipment scattered often blocking access to other machines.

Some pluses and minuses. Our \"courtyard view\" room overlooked a car park - where the Zumba class was held in the late afternoon (this is _loud_). The room servicing was late afternoon, which was a bit inconvenient. The most negative thing was the reception staff telling us the wrong time for the airport transfer - we were lucky we came back early!
On the plus side, the breakfast was very good, most of the staff were very pleasant, and the room was OK. Good bed, nice to have aircon.
