Avoid This Hotel – No Power, No Refund, No Accountability

I booked The Galley of Lorne Inn for October 2025 through Expedia. On arrival, the hotel had no power and was completely inoperable following a storm. Staff told us we could not stay and that a refund would be arranged through Expedia.

Days later, Expedia confirmed they had contacted the property, but the owner refused to authorize the refund, citing a strict cancellation policy even though the hotel could not accommodate guests. Expedia’s agent said they had pushed for flexibility, but the property would not cooperate.

To make matters worse, staff later told Expedia they were not allowed to confirm the power outage and that only the owner could speak — yet the owner does not respond to calls or emails.

I have travelled internationally for years and have never experienced a property that failed to provide accommodation and then refused any accountability.

If you value honesty and professionalism, choose a different place to stay.

It's a little gem with great views.

Ah, what a gem of a place! A bit off the beaten track, but that's exactly what I was looking for and the Galley of Lorn did not disappoint.

The overall air is casual, the staff are friendly and chatty, and nothing is too much trouble.
The whole interior looks fairly recently updated, but it's left with enough older features to retain some character.

The rooms are all named after Scottish islands, and we stayed in Skye. The room is black and gold decor, done well, not at all overstated. Usual tea and coffee, small fridge (tiny, and tucked inside one of the bedside cabinets,) a safe, hairdryer... Most, if not all, the things you might reasonably expect.
The television is probably the largest I've ever seen in any hotel room, which was excellent, and there's an Alexa Show by the bed as well.
The bed itself is relatively firm, which suits us entirely.

The bathroom is clean and modern. It has an excellent waterfall shower in a double sized shower cubicle, with good water pressure.
And then there's the view from the room onto an inlet of Loch Craignish; I'll add pictures.
Food, excellent, no complaints. Large plates of well made meals with a focus on locally sourced produce, from Cristian the chef... Don't tell him it's excellent, his head is said to be big enough already.

Must mention Laura, receptionist/ barmaid/ waitress, for just being excellent all round.

Definitely book again.

The staff were extremely helpful, especially Amanda. As I was running late due to traffic I would have missed last order for eating, spoke with Amanda who said they would keep the kitchen open a little longer. Also due to work had to leave before breakfast was served and she sorted a packed meal left in the reception.
Food was really good and amazing location.

The food and staff were excellent, delicious supper and breakfast. The major problem for us was the room. Make sure you are not in the IONA Suite. It is not a suite and the bedroom does not have a window. This was not explained to me when we booked and feel we were misled. We asked to change rooms but none were available so were stuck with it. As a long time user of Expedia we feel very let down and mis-sold.

I loved this hotel. The staff was wonderful. Dinner wasn’t bad but not mind-blowing. Breakfast was pretty good.
You could tell that every detail of the room was chosen meticulously for comfort and a smaller environmental footprint.
The outdoor space in the back was heavenly to watch the sunrise. I was even lucky enough to have a bunny come hangout with me.

Great place, not so great service.

The heaters in the room were not working or not hot enough to heat the room properly. We spent most of the night freezing and had to put on several layers to keep warm. I tried to go out in the lobby and hit the call button for someone but no one answered.

In the pub, the bartenders didn’t seem to want to service us. There were only a few people in the pub but trying to wave down the bartender or to try to order something was just ignored. They came over to us when they felt like it. The food was ok, just a bit below par for pub food.

It’s a shame because it a beautiful place and a beautiful town, and it’s a cozy inn with a great view. The customer service just needs to come up.

Nice modern room, even at had an Amazon Alexa device. Go there ! Well worth a stay

We had an absolute fantastic experience with everyone at The Galley of Lorne Inn
We were able to book the Iona suite and we had our 1 yr old Boarder Collie with us
We are already recommending this lovely place to many family and friends
Such a relaxed atmosphere and 5 star service
The food is absolutely amazing and so fresh homemade Burgers and local produce highlights the area and the views not just from the restaurant but also the room was breathtaking
The staff set up a table for us in the public bar so our boarder collie could experience the company and atmosphere with us,

Dark, dinghy and depressing

We were really looking forward to our stay.

Unfortunately the hotel were unable to satisfy our dinner reservations due to staffing issues, which happens, but no effort was made to offer alternatives or assistance in arranging an alternative which, due to the hotels remote location, meant an hours drive.

Our room was booked for two adults and an 11 year old child but it was far too small. We could barely walk around the beds and could not open the wardrobe. However, the room had recently been refurbished and would have been comfortable for two people.

The nice lounge / bar area was reserved for breakfast (no idea why this wasn't served in the restaurant) but was laid for breakfast in the afternoon so we had to sit in the \"tap room\" iwhich was dark, dirty and had holes in the roof. It was also frequently silent with no atmosphere at all. There was a large and airy restaurant but this was closed off until the last day.

On our last evening the restaurant was opened and the environment and staff were nice but it was like having dinner at my Grandma's (I love my grandmother but she was of another time when it came to culinary matters)

The staff were very nice overall but the whole place lacked warmth and atmosphere. It was a bit depressing really.

Fabulous place & fantastic views

Wonderful and welcoming place to stay, with the most breathtaking views, the staff are really helpful and friendly and the food was sensational with plenty of variety on the menu. The room was spacious and clean and big enough to have a travel cot. Thank you for a lovely stay and I would definitely return and recommend.

Nice hotel in an amazing location

Nice dog-friendly hotel. Rooms have recently been refurbished and are very nice.
Good, friendly service from the staff. Food orders were a little slow coming out of the kitchen, but the staff explained that they were busy and a bit under-staffed. But the food was worth the wait.
The location of the hotel is fabulous and the views of the loch from the garden are amazing.
All in all, we had a very nice stay. Would stay again.

Friendly and luxurious + memorable interior design

Everything was spotlessly clean and brand new when I arrived. The refurbishment of the rooms was state-of-the-art and stylish but took a bit of getting used to as black was a predominate colour choice. After the initial surprise, I found the room had a cosy welcoming feeling and was really impressed by the bathroom.
Everything was very comfortable and staff were extremely helpful in a relaxed and professional way. The food choice was varied and interesting and everything was cooked to perfection.
My only (slight) gripe was that wine and whisky choices that I made from the menu turned out not to be available. This happened four or five times. On the plus side, the staff were helpful and knowledgeable in providing other choices and even gave me a free glass at one point by way of compensation.
I would definitely recommend staying at the hotel.

Great choice for a stop-over

Our overnight stay was at the start of September 2020 so it was quiet, which was fine for me. The owner was very friendly and made us feel welcome. We had dinner and drinks in the bar (seabass - very tasty!) and chatted with another couple and their dog. There is a large dining hall but the bar had more character so we stayed there.

As the weather was behaving itself we could sit outside for a bit and gaze over the water. This was tranquillity - it's so peaceful here. There's not much to Adfern but again that was absolutely fine by me. After a long drive from Mallaig, stopping off at Oban, I was happy for some peace and quiet. There is a sizeable boatyard close by and there was a small (well-behaved) group of young sailing types in the bar but I guess it was out of season perhaps.

The room was absolutely fine (the Ghia room I think) and the bed was comfy. The bathroom was a decent size with a large shower.

The Galley was a random choice as neither my wife nor I were familiar with this part of the country. I'm so glad we chose to stay here though - lovely place. We would definitely stay here again.

Heatless in the Highlands

If like me your idea of a rainy winter weekend in the Highlands involves sitting in a comfy lounge chair by a roaring log fire then this is NOT the hotel for you. However if you have fond memories of the old Scottish Youth Hostels and their chilly bathrooms and don't mind making your own bed then it will suit you.
Really if the only way you can enjoy reading the Sunday papers is to get into bed with all your clothes on then is it worth while travelling all these miles to the Highlands?

The location of property is beautiful. Staff were very friendly. I was disappointed that breakfast was served in the lounge area and not in the restaurant with the beautiful view of the loch as indicated when booking the property. Scrambled egg was overcooked. Very thin walls in the room. Could hear every noise from adjoining rooms.

Beautiful little Inn, off the beaten path

The Inn was very nice and it has a very tranquil surrounding. The rooms were nice and the bathroom had a 5 foot bathtub that was great. I stayed two nights in two different rooms. The first night I had noisy neighbors but the second night was much better.
The food in the Inn was good and the price was very fair. The grounds sat next to a lake and they had picnic tables outside if you wanted to be outside. It was about 35 minutes to Oban along a beautiful drive.
I would recommend this hotel and I would return if I was in the area again.

A hidden gem of a hotel.

Tucked away some 24 miles South of Oban, the hotel is situated in a quiet beautiful location. The room was clean and well maintained and the staff friendly and helpful. The only minor issue we had was that my wives porridge for breakfast had large brown lumps in it as though the porridge had burnt and stuck to the bottom of the pan. On the other hand my highlander breakfast was excellent. Be aware breakfasts do not start until 8:30 so not a problem for holiday makers like us but could be a problem for people on business trips. Overall this was a very pleasant stay in a wonderfully picturesque and we would definitely return.

Quiet stay

We wanted to try somewhere different to break our journey. this hotel is in a lovely location and is a mixture of new and old. The bar and lounge are very old style and full of character. The dining room is bright and quite modern. The room was clean, tidy and had everything needed for a one night stay. There had obviously been some problem on the day we arrived as the bar did not open until later and there appeared to be a tension in the air among some staff but on the whole they were friendly and attentive.

A nice hotel in a quiet location.

I stayed here for one night on a business trip as I had an appointment in Oban the following morning & couldn't find anywhere to stay in Oban itself at an affordable price.
The hotel is located near the end of a single-track road in the tiny village of Ardfern and although there isn't much to do in the village the scenery & friendliness of the locals more than make up for it. There are only 9 rooms in the hotel but they're nice and well-equipped.
The food in the restaurant was of a high standard (as was the breakfast served in the bar area) and not too expensive with a good choice of dishes.
The only slight downside was breakfast isn't served until 8am but you can request an earlier one which I did and a member of staff came in early to prepare it. As I had a business meeting in Oban (45 mins away) I was very appreciative of this.
The hotel staff/owners were very friendly and I have no hesitation in recommending the hotel for an overnight stay or longer.
I can see myself returning next time I need a hotel in that area.

First impression dreadful !

This is not a 4 star stay.
I was planning a 1 star review, however the am staff (Casey) helped improve our opinion. The breakfast was also very good.

If I hadn't just driven all day when we arrived, we would have found other accommodation. (We only stayed one night). On arrival, we were not made to feel welcome. The room was overpriced and had a musty smell. The carpet was so old & ground in dirt (it had been vacuumed), that I didn't want to walk on it in bare feet.
Went along to the bar in the evening & the bartender was surly and complaining about being overworked. As a result, the refreshment I had was dreadful & could only drink 1/4 of it.

On this trip we have stayed at 6 different accommodations, the other 5 have been delightful.

Apart from the lovely am staff member & the pleasant setting, I would NOT recommend this accommodation.
