I’ve staid in many hotels in Japan, and this might just be the best one. Even with my limited Japanese, the staff was very accommodating and kind, and the facility felt safe, cozy, and nostalgic even in the heart of Sapporo. I’ll be sure to stay again next time I visit Hokkaido. ありがとうございます😊

Great Ryokan for an affordable price. Truly authentic Japanese style. Only thing to keep in mind is that the lobby is a smoking area. My room was above the lobby so I could smell it all night long. The staff sent me an air purifier which helped. Breakfast was great and everyone was super nice

Truely had a wonderful stay, the staff are very nice and friendly. We were there during the recent earthquake and everyone there went out of their way to ensure we were ok and had enough food etc. When we had to extend our stay due to the airport being closed, they did all they could to accomindate our need for additional days etc. By the end of our trip, they felt like family. This kind of caring is lost at bigger hotels. Treat yourself to the experience of staying in a traditional style Japanese room under the care of this hotel staff, will not hesitate to stay there again.

Lovely hotel, about 10 mins walk from Sapporo station so easy to get around. Staff very polite and helpful and speak some English which proved very helpful. The a ryokan makes it an authentic experience and was comfy to sleep. Heated toilet seats are a novelty!,

We stayed here for three nights and were welcomed by very friendly staff. Our rooms were clean and warm and very comfortable. The onsen was relaxing after a day’s sightseeing. I can recommend the breakfast as well.

Good experience of Ryokan

I was with my family total of 5 people. Hotel was quite small but relatively good size for accommodation in Japan. It took us around 10 minutes to Sapporo Station but there were plenty of subway walk where you can escaped the cold weather. On our arrival we received a welcome dessert and tea. House keeping was great and they promptly responded to your request. They also prepared your bed too. Their onsen was separated male and female. It was a bit small but that’s where I spent time with my sister at night bath. They have their own toilet and bathroom. We didn’t get to try meals at the hotel as there were plenty of restaurants around.

Great and welcoming experience

Just right opposite former government building which is very beautiful during white winter. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Deposited my luggage as I arrived early and when I returned to check in at night, my luggage was already in my room and was welcomed with mochi and tea. A little cold in winter though but had a wonderful ryokan experience.

This is a great place to try out a japanese ryokan. They great you with tea service in the room which is a nice touch. The Japanese tatami mat beds were the most comfortable that I have slept on. The place is great and in a great central location.

Cosy ryokan in the middle of the city

Ryokan is probably a 10mins or so walk from Sapporo station. Smooth check in process. We were all greeted warmly by front desk and other staff members. We were orientated to the ryokan. Facilities were outdated however that's the charm of ryokans! Facility was clean and spotless. There is a public bath but none of us used it. Futons were comfortable. Self laundry is available at the ryokan. We purchased a coupon for breakfast (1080yen)- variety of things to eat (mostly Japanese styled breakfast options). We thoroughly enjoyed our stay over the three nights.

Nice little ryokan

The staff was wonderful and helped me with my sightseeing planning. Dinner in your room is a must if you are staying there. It is a very short walk from the JR Sapporo station and a walkable distance to Odori park and Sapporo tower. Being that my visit was during the cold season, I can say the room was always in a comfortable temperature. I will visit again in the future. P.S. This Ryokan has quite a history leading back to the very early 1900s, it is very interesting.

The stay was not so good: the room was an extreme squeeze for 4 people, and it was just enough space to lay 4 futons, with absolutely no more space to open our luggages. The toilet was also very small. The bath towels are of very thin materials and bath soap and shampoo are in little packets and there was no hair conditioner. The only positive thing was the friendliness of the staff, even though they spoke very limited English.
Would not recommend if you want a comfortable stay!

Lovely mixture of the old and the new

This is a lovely hotel that mixes a traditional Japanese ryokan with modern comforts. The rooms are large and comfortable, but you will sleep on a traditional Japanese futon. The staff are lovely - they will serve you green tea in your room to welcome you. Also it's very conveniently located, just a few minutes walk from the railway station.

Well-loved ryokan

We were thrilled to find Nakamuraya Ryokan as it is an authentic Japanese traveling experience. This place is not fancy, but the staff is extra kind, helpful and accommodating. There are many repeat guests and their wear and tear on the place are showing, but again, like a well-loved stuffed animal, that's not what you focus on if you love it.

The hotel is really old. But it's close to JR station. The staffs are very nice. We checked in early, so we went out for shopping. When we arrived, our luggage is in the room already and the staff welcomed us by showing us all the facilities, making us tea and providing a small dessert. The service is the best I have experienced in all the hotels in Japan.

First experience at a ryokan

About 6 blocks from the jr station, about my limit for dragging suitcases. For food, can either eat here or at apia close to the station, nice experience on checkin , they took suitcases upstairs and served tea and cake , and after a long train ride, a pleasant experience.
The futons were amazingly comfortable, and the japanese bath a nice first. Only thing is that there was a bit of smell of cigarettes in the hallways and entrance as we are non smokers.

Great little ryokan

The best thing about this place is that every cab driver knows where it's at if you just say the name... compared to the other places where we stayed, where nobody had any clue.

Woman in kimono showed us to our room and gave us welcome sweets, yay! Unfortunately, it was mochi, which I was kind of sick of at that point. But it was good mochi. It also bothers me a little when they make the greeter a young, cute woman -- there's something really objectifying about it -- but I suppose in this case we can say it's tradition?

Most of the staff speaks really limited English, except for one or two people who do it passably. But they try really hard, even if it's kind of awkward.

They also make you leave your key at the front desk every time you leave the hotel, which is the first time that's happened to me before.

Room was clean; the only thing is we killed a bug in our room. But other than that, no complaints. Room was reasonably priced for the festival.

Value for Money, Location, Service, and Facalities

Pros:
Excellent location of Sapporo city. Nearby to Botanic Garden, Clock Tower, Government Building, Sapporo University, shopping and JR Train Station.
Great hospitality and hotel staffs serve hot green tea and welcome snacks. They even make up the futon for us.
Plenty of facilities with a budget hotel. Either use the public bath or a private toilet in the room. It has hot bath to relax yourself.
The hotel staff helps you move and park your car.
This place provides Japanese suits (Yukata), complete amenities and right size of slippers.

Cons:
Room Wifi is not working.
May look old or dated. But it is very clean and well maintained.
Some hotel staffs may have difficulties communicating in English.

My Comments:
A must to stay in Sapporo regardless using a car or public transport. Parking is chargeable and have Wifi at the lobby. Traditional hotel where you will sleep with the traditional Japanese room. Japan Futons and it has big TV screen.

A traditional hotel in the heart of Sapporo

A comfortable Japanese-style hotel, within walking distance of Sapporo station, right between the botanical gardens and the former government building, and an easy walk to Hokkaido University, and Odori Park. My only gripe would be that wifi is only in the lobby, where the designated smoking area is.
A tip: spring for the Japanese breakfast...it's very reasonably priced, the food is pretty good, and it's a great way to start your day of exploring.

The homemade, traditional Japanese foods they served at breakfast were wonderful. The service was top quality, and MOST of the staff were very good about speaking to me in Japanese when I spoke to them in Japanese. They have a couple people who can communicate in English on staff of you want a traditional experience but haven't studied up. It's a fantastic little ryokan in a perfect location.

Great stay next to Sapporo station

My husband and I stayed here with our two year old during Jan 2015. We loved that it was so close to the JR Sapporo station (5 min) and appreciated the attentive and warm service. Our toddler got a welcome snack during check-in and her own yukata (Japanese gown) to wear around the ryokan, which she loved. Our private bathroom was the biggest we have had while staying in a Japanese ryokan. Don't miss the bancha (or hojicha) that they offer to bring to your room in addition to the green tea, the public baths on the second floor, or the room-service local draft beer. The only minor things that would make this ryokan even more outstanding would be 1) having internet/wifi connection in the rooms and 2) reducing the smell of smoke in the rooms.

Comfortable and welcoming guesthouse

The guesthouse offers a more traditional experience than a standard hotel room. We found it very enjoyable and interesting as foreigners visiting Japan. The futon bed was also more comfortable than the average hotel bed. The best part was the exceptional service from the guesthouse staff, which was very warm and personal. The front desk staff also speak fluent English.

A traditional Japanese inn.

This place is surrounded by historical sites and just few steps from a very attractive botanical garden, also pretty close to city center and train station. Nakamuraya is a rare traditional Japanese inn. So don't expect fancy amenities. But their staffs are very efficient and friendly willing to help. This is a place for anyone to experience a bit of old Japan.

Comfort without Compromising Cost

I originally booked a room for 1 person. With last minute changes in travel plans, the staff was able to accommodate an extra person on my reservation Upon agreeing to change to a larger room (with an additional person charge) that did not come with a personal bath/toilet, we were giving complimentary breakfast. The room was clean, spacious. The futons were extremely comfortable. I will definitely return to this accommodation on my next visit to Sappporo.

We were expecting the real ryokan experience but left totally dissatisfied from room comfort ( we booked 2 but were given 2 different types though paying the same rate) to getting awful breakfasts though we paid extra expecting the same from our previous experience in Kyoto in another ryokan. I had an amazing time in Nakamayura Ryokan.
The staff were very friendly and helpful - especially for someone with very little Japanese. It is very centrally located for the JR train and Odori Park.
The baths were amazing and the breakfast was delicious.
I would highly recommend it.

Great place to sample a traditional ryokan

We stayed for four days at this ryokan and found it absolutely delightful! The stuff were very kind and helpful and there was no problem communicating in English. They even went outside when we first came to the ryokan and greeted us by our names and gave us towels as it was raining cats and dogs.
The room is traditional room with tea table during daytime and o-futon at night. There is also bathroom, which we almost never used as they have fantastic public o-furo (bath) and we went there every morning and every evening. The room was smoking (I guess all their rooms are) but although I am very susceptible to it I never felt anything and could be in the room and sleep comfortably – not a hint of smoking.
The breakfast is great! You are given a tray with some food (fish, boiled vegetables, pickles) and also there is a buffet table where you can get as much as you like rice, miso soup, all sorts of condiments and sauces and even some western food and coffee with buns! One of the best breakfasts I had in Japan.

A well-kept secret in the heart of Sapporo

I was amazed to find a place between Odori Park, Sapporo train station, the old government building (called Akarenga), and the botannical garden. I didn't have to go far to see anything (which was perfect, as it rained off and on). The service at the hotel was incredibly upscale and everything was very nice. It's the perfect Japanese-style hotel experience.

I was really surprised to find such a nice ryokan-style hotel in the middle of everything. Its location between the train staiton, the old Govorner's Office, the botannical garden, and Odori Park is really the best I could have hoped for. Breakfast was a pleantiful and delicious combination of Japanese food and some additional items, like bread rolls and fresh fruit. The room was enormous for just one person, and the futon was very comfortable. The bathroom was very large as well, which surprised me because I wasn't expecting a bathtub in the room in addition to the community baths (I opted for the women's community bath and it was very nice). The lobby wireless was very fast and user-friendly. I felt welcomed every time I walked into the hotel throughout the day. Each time I went into the room they'd done something, like replaced my tea, or moved the table and put away my futon, or laid out my futon and pajamas. It was like happy cleaning magic. They were also kind enough to store my luggage on my last day so I didn't need to pay for a locker at the train station. I've stayed at other hotels in that area before, and I've enjoyed every hotel, but if I go back to Hokkaido, I'll definitely stay at Nakamuraya Ryokan again.

Great Ryokan staying experience

Nakamuraya Ryokan is really a good Ryokan to stay in Sapporo. The location is reasonable, about 10 mins walk from JR station. The room is clean and tidy. The breakfast provided was fantastic. We have a great Ryokan staying experience with their excellant service!
