Not sure how much data to buy? Estimate your trip with our eSIM data calculator.
In this guide

Running low on travel data does not always mean you need a new eSIM. Some installed profiles offer top-up packages, while others do not. The right choice depends on the profile you already have, the destination you need next and the selected package's activation and validity conditions.
Check the actual eSIM and available options rather than assuming every plan can be extended. More data, a later expiry and additional country coverage are separate features to verify.
Identify the profile and the package separately
The installed eSIM profile is the connection identity on your device. The purchased package defines the allowance, validity and coverage available under that product. On an eligible profile, a top-up adds a further package under its stated conditions rather than automatically creating a second installation.
Make sure you are viewing the correct eSIM if you have more than one. A familiar destination name is not enough to identify the profile. Use the account's relevant eSIM details and the labels you assigned on the phone, keeping identifiers private when requesting help.
| Check | Available top-up | New eSIM plan |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | Must be offered for the actual existing profile. | Check device compatibility and any installation requirements. |
| Destination | Read the top-up's supported coverage. | Choose the exact country or regional coverage you need. |
| Validity | Read when the new package starts and expires. | Read the selected new plan's activation policy. |
| Remaining allowance | Check how the current and next packages are handled. | Do not assume old data transfers to a new profile. |
| Setup | Follow the existing profile's top-up instructions. | Follow the new installation and line-selection instructions. |
Check whether a top-up is available for your eSIM
CryptoTraveler's plan details show top-up information where supplied. For a purchased eSIM, sign in to your account, open the relevant eSIM and review its available Top-Up options and package history.
Do not interpret an absent option as a promise that more packages will appear later. Availability belongs to the particular profile and product. If an option is unclear or you cannot identify the correct profile, contact support before buying another package.
Keep a profile you intend to reuse installed unless its instructions say otherwise. Turning a line off and deleting its profile are different actions. Check reinstallation or transfer instructions before removing something you still need.
Read remaining data and expiry together
A package can stop being usable because its allowance is exhausted or because its validity ends. Buying more data is only useful if the new package's period fits the remaining trip. Read both the usage and the expiry information.
Do not assume an extra package simply adds days to the old expiry or pools all unused data into one allowance. Read the activation conditions, including whether the next package waits while the current one remains active.
Planning example: you have five travel days left but the current package expires tomorrow. Compare the complete validity of an available top-up with that of a new plan, not just the number of gigabytes. This example describes a decision, not the activation policy of every package.
Check coverage before crossing a border
A top-up on the same profile is not automatic coverage for a new country. Read the actual included-country list and network information for the offered package. If the next destination is missing, compare a new suitable country or regional plan.
Our regional versus global eSIM guide explains how to assess scope. A regional name alone does not confirm every stop, and a country package should not be assumed to cover a neighboring destination.
Check calls, SMS, hotspot permission and any speed conditions separately from data quantity. If those services are essential, compare the actual package features rather than treating a top-up as identical to the original allowance.
Compare the usable package for the remaining trip
Compare available options by usable allowance, validity, coverage, setup and total price. A larger package is not necessarily the better choice if it does not cover the dates or destination you need.
Review your expected use: maps and messages create a different need from frequent video calls or laptop sharing. Our data-planning guide helps estimate the allowance. The unlimited-plan guide explains why speed and tethering conditions still matter.
If you choose a new plan, compare available destinations and its activation policy before installation. Keep the old and new lines clearly labeled so the phone uses the intended connection.
Verify the purchase before repeating it
Review the selected profile and package before payment, then check the order result and package history afterward. Usage or history information may not update immediately. A delayed display is not by itself a reason to buy the same top-up again.
If the new allowance is not active, read its activation conditions and the account's instructions. Check the correct line is selected and follow the relevant connection guidance. Do not delete and reinstall the profile as a first response to an unclear package status.
Save the order reference and relevant status, then ask support if you cannot establish what was purchased or when it should become usable. Our connection troubleshooting guide covers separate device and network checks.
Travel eSIM top-up questions
Can every travel eSIM be topped up?
No. Check the available options for the actual profile and product.
Does a top-up always extend the old package's expiry?
Do not assume that. Read the new package's validity and activation conditions separately.
Will topping up add another country?
Only if the selected package explicitly includes that destination. Check the coverage list before purchasing.
Should I buy again if the history has not updated?
First check the purchase result, package conditions and support guidance. Avoid duplicating an uncertain purchase.
