Wonderful stay!

Wonderful experience! A stately & historical large ryokan nested on the eastern hill slope of Gero town. My second stay at this ryokan & will continue to stay there next time I am in Gero. Very good vista of the town in the morning or evening. Very large garden & landscape, with tall tress & seasonal flower trees.or bushes.. a beautiful & varied feast for the eyes & senses if one come at different seasons... Has its own hotel museum to showcase it's checkered history & early artifacts, etc. just like many other ryokans with a long historical tradition.
Onsen water is alkaline typical of Gero & has that silky smooth feel. Food & service is good as expected.
If one is in Gero, this is a ryokan that one should stay at least one night to experience Gero ambiance..

Speechless with hospitality and food!!

Their hospitality is superb!! Traditional japanese breakfast and dinner in the room were very tasty!! The hida beef shabu shabu was unforgettable! Shout to Suehiro for his top notch service during dinner preparation and his very good english! Staff in reception has also treated us with unforgettable hospitality experience!! We will definitely come back! The Momiji room is definitely worth it, specially the outdoor private onsen bath!!

Excellent famous onsen ryokan visited by two previous emperors. Excellent service, rooms are traditional tatami mat rooms but with nice views of Gero town below and the surrounding greenery. Traditional but with character and Japanese flavour. Dinner and breakfast are set courses and excellent in presentation and flavours. Separate men and women onsen baths have large indoor pools and smaller but very beautiful rock garden style outdoor pools - very relaxing to sit in outdoor pool looking up at the night sky stars.

A hotel with lots of traditional Japanese charm

The hotel is surrounded by countless tall trees and we could only breathe fresh air as we arrived.

Yunoshimakan is an old-fashioned hotel. \"Old-fashioned\" isn't used in a negative way, as, after all, this is why we came to stay. Architecturally, this is a very interesting hotel - a historical wooden hotel with seemingly endless carpeted corridors that bring you to different locations in the hotel to gaze out through the windows to its green surroundings and the hills in the distance. We came in May and everything outside was mostly green; I can only try to imagine how the view changes when foliage changes to its autumn colors.

Staff members of the hotel were friendly and helpful.

Meals were, however, not impressive. I hope there could be options to upgrade them.

Stunning Ryokan in the hills of Gero

Only stayed one night but it was absolutely amazing, the private dinner in the room was beautifully prepared & presented, & served by the excellent & friendly staff. The room was very spacious, very clean & the open air onsen was fantastic! One of the highlights of our trip to Japan will definitely stay here again on our next trip.

YOU’LL REGRET IF YOU DONT STAY HERE!!!

This is definitely the best hotel ( both services and facilities) I have ever stayed in my lifetime. We were driving from Nagoya to Gero for one night stay. Few days before arrival, staff has sent message via hotel.com to confirm arrival and dinner time. When we arrived hotel, there’s 2 gentlemen waiting us outside of the hotel and handled the luggages for us. Then we had two specific staff who serviced us during the stay. The staff has clearly explained to us the hotel’s facilities and prepared hot tea to us. Our room is in traditional building with private outdoor onsen. However, if you can’t get a chance to book a room with private onsen, there are 4 private onsen rooms which are opened for all guests, you can occupy the whole room with your loved one. There r also public indoor and outdoor onsen with view. Dinner and breakfast are delicious, frankly speaking not the “food to die for” but considering the service, staff and whole atmosphere, ill say it has brought the dining experience to the top level. The hotel locates on the top of the “mountain?” which can enjoy the view of Gero. I really like the historical Japanese style architecture, I like everything in this hotel. I’ll def come back! I would also like to take this chance via hotel.com to show our gratitude to Yunoshimakan team. Thank you for taking care of us. You have made our trip more meaningful and you have well represented your country :)

Amazing Traditional Japanese onsen experience

A great experience. Provided with yukata (traditional robe) to wear you are fully immersed in the way of the Japanese onsen. Breakfast and dinner are both a delight though you may recognise few of the foods on offer. Marvellous staff; fantastic location; great hot baths. Thoroughly recommend this place to anyone wanting to experience rather than just see Japan.

Like a fairy story...

My wife and I spent two nights here. The onsens were wonderfully hot. I liked the outdoors one best. The meals served in our room were beautiful and Yuki, our hostess, was a very funny, sweet girl who was enthusiastic about Japanese food. We really never left the place for two days, just dawdled around, climbed the hill behind the ryokan and soaked in the onsen twice a day.

Overrated onsen hotel

If you want to stay in overrated hotel, this is may be the best choice. We had tried 8-10 similar price range onsen hotels in Japan, and we can say this is the worst due to the poor services and attitude:
1) Very poor services - Staffs didn't smile and we thought they didn't like guests. Also, they didn't help you to pull out the luggage from the car, and just stood aside to watch you. One staff asked you to choose the yukata in the entrance, but she didn't help you to hold it. These are very basic services and attitude in Onsen hotels. During room dinner section, the staff didn't explain well and when she tidied up the table after the dinner, she was very rude and made lot of noise. I can only say this is a very special experience in Onsen Hotel.
Overall, we think this hotel's hardware is ok, very classic onsen hotel. However, their software (staffs services and attitude) is very bad.

Value for Money and Beyond!

I fell in love first with the architecture and interior, followed with the hospitality and the facilities. It was an amazing stay and although it is expensive I highly recommend one to at least give it a try for one day.

The open air onsen was amazing. The room was comfortable and the meals were so well thought out and delicate it is absolute worth the money to have an experience that had me feeling like a member of the royals in Japan. Highly recommend!

Helpful staff

One of our friend lost a camera on the hida train. Staff of the hotel made a great effort to contact the Japan rail and after two days did locate the camera and due to JR regulation we have to retrieve it from takyama. They then help us to plan our trip to takyama in short notice.

Disappointing!

The place struck us as a white elephant. It is a rambling facility, badly in need of repair and renovation. Stained carpets, funky bedding, and not all the pastoral location we were expecting. The hotel is frequented by Asians and not well-equipped to deal with English speakers. The evening meals were very nicely presented and delicious. The young women serving us were delightful.
All in all, over-priced and not recommended.

Outstanding ryokan

This was simply one of the best ryokan we've ever stayed in. The site on a quiet hillside is just spectacular. It's a sprawling collection over many floors, but all was lovely in a very traditional ryokan way. The view from the outdoor baths, of mountains with mist flowing over the tops, with rain falling, simply was one of most amazing sites I've ever seen anywhere. Dinner was excellent; our room was adequate but not spectacular. The worst part is the town of Gero down the hill (quite far to walk) which was nothing interesting at all. But we didn't care, we just hung out in the ryokan...

Must try and highly recommended

Although the location is away from downtown, that is why it is so unique. The hotel is in the middle of the hill. The buildings are old but in excellent condition. The staff are friendly, the food is OK. The open air public hot bath is the biggest one I had experience in Japan, and they are very clean with unobstructed view. It worth to mention that the hiking trail at the back the of the hotel is very nice and beautiful. The trail is suitable for any all ages.

Grand Budapest Hotel in Japan

We splashed out on a night here before the Takayama festival including dinner and we were not disappointed! The service was amazing, the food was wonderfully presented and delicious, naked swimming is great fun, and most importantly the whole place has this amazing 1970s retro vibe. It seems to exude this old-school, faded-glory, money-can't-buy class. It felt like being in the Japanese version of Wes Anderson's Grand Budapest Hotel - the scenes with Jude Law. Highly highly recommend staying and opting for dinner as well.

Fantastic Experience

We stayed for two nights in January 2015. The staff go out of their way to ensure they do their best to help you and have an enjoyable stay. We stayed in a suisen room (combination Japanese and Western with a private bath). diner was served in the room and gave us the opportunity to try many types of Japanese dishes. Breakfast, which was served in the banquet hall, was also impressive. The onsen is easily reached from Gero Station courtesy of the shuttle service - let the onsen know the arrival time of your train and there will be someone there to meet you. The onsen provides a number of opportunities to experience a Japanese onsen - ranging from public bathing to private family baths.

Yunoshimakan is a destination in itself, set above Gero and offering great views over the valley. There is not much on offer in Gero - but there is plenty to keep you occupied at the onsen.

Highly recommended.

We booked for a night with a half board. Before we arrived at the place, we felt a touch of warm welcome and sincerity from the emails asking for food allergy and time of arriving. By the time we were at the hotel, all staff are very professional and friendly at the same time. Meals were delicious. The outdoor public bath was heavenly beautiful. Lovely Ryokan in a remote location.

Getting there was quite tricky. We caught the wrong train from the right platform but managed to get there in time for the hotel run shuttle. The staff were very polite and helpful even though we speak very little Japanese. The facility itself is quite large and somewhat difficult to navigate around.

We noted there weren't many Western tourists, but this didn't seem to affect our experience.

We stayed in the room with a personal bath so didn't visit the open air onsen.

The dinner and breakfast were traditional Japanese and it was an interesting experience.

Although it can be expensive, we probably should have stayed for more than one night to fully experience the Ryokan and the surrounding area's.

Yunoshimakan in October

Yunoshimakan is a old style Japanese hotel. You get to sleep on tatami. Basically it's an onsen resort with a few shared baths and also private bath in the rooms.

There is a free shuttle from the train station to the hotel. Walking can be a good 20 minutes walk from the station and not advisable if you have luggages because it's uphill on the last stretch.

hidden gem

We stayed here during our honeymoon. Gero is a remote town with few trains stopping. There's not much to see/do in the city. We chose Yunoshimakan because it looked gorgeous. It was in its own world, located in the hills, only 5 min shuttle ride from the station. The property is spread out, with mountain/forest views, and overlooking the city in a distance. They store your shoes and are given slippers/robes. Women choose patterned and men get standard yukata. After check-in, we stayed in the whole time. There was much to explore on site. They encourage you to visit the stations set up throughout the property where get a stamp mark on a piece of paper. Once you collect them all, you get a discount at the giftshop. We stayed at a Keizanso room with private bath. You’re able to privately soak while enjoying mountain views with a fully openable floor to ceiling window. They also have 1 foot, 2 outdoor, and 4 private family/couples baths with varying designs for you to enjoy with everything you need - from towels, toiletries, to hairdryer. The highlight of the stay, the in-room kaiseki. It’s a lot of food. After dinner, they send in the bed ninjas to make beds. Next morning, woke up early to beat crowds to the outdoor baths. Traditional breakfast is served in the dining hall. That too was generous meal and the same girl served us at the dining hall. Overall, not cheap but for what you get, the extra spent was well worth it. You're treated like royalty here.

Grand old Ryokan Onsen

We absolutely loved our stay at Yunoshimikan - it is a beautiful, sprawling grand old ryokan, tucked among the pine forests on the mountainside in Gero. We booked a 'Bekkan' room, which was enormous - with floor-ceiling windows that would slide wide open, bringing your room into the forest. Our room also came with what can only be described as a private onsen 'suite', with indoor and outdoor natural spring water baths (as well as a shower for rinsing). A feast of a kaiseki dinner was served in our room (we were literally in a food coma afterwards), and the breakfast was fantastic too. It is also well worth getting over any shyness on public nudity and checking out the hotel's public onsen, which featured beautiful rocky outdoor pools overlooking the valley - as a plus, the gender assignment of the baths are swapped overnight, so you can check out both pairs of indoor/outdoor baths during your stay. Whilst the hotel does show its age in some parts, we saw this as part of its charm, and overall, well worth the splurge for a night.

Yunoshimakan was the highlight of our Japan trip. A bit out of the way but well worth it. From the moment we arrived at Gero station we were warmly welcomed by the Hotel shuttle driver to the last day. We stayed 2 nights and could happily have stayed longer. The staff were attentive and excellent and understood enough English to get by. The tranquil surrounds of the hotel up in the mountain was breathtaking! Please include breakfast and dinner in your stay, you will be truly waited on like royalty. The food is the best we have sampled in Japan and the presentation is simply mind boggling. You will not be disappointed!

bath room in our 2 Japanese Rooms KEIZANSO with indoor bath are too old, not nice as AD in hotel website. Traditional Japanese Spa Resort

This is a lovely older-style traditional Japanese spa/onsen resort. It overlooks the spa-town of Gero.

Be prepared to remove your western clothes and to spend your time at the hotel wearing the traditional Japanese kimono style clothing including the toesocks and the slippers. You will likely wear the provided Japanese clothing around the hotel including to the breakfast which is an experience in itself.

Our rooms had private bath, dinner and breakfast included. We thought it would be more fun to 'get amongst' it with other guests so that even though the lovely lady at the front desk suggested we take our elaborate traditional Japanese dinner in our room, we asked to go to the restaurant instead... silly foreigners... we were the only ones in the restaurant, private baths and private dining are clearly preferred by the locals :).

The public onsen is beautiful with great views and inside and outside baths. The outside bath is like a rock pool with views over the mountains.

Don't be worried if you've never worn the clothes or done the communal bath... They'll explain the process to you.

Gorgeous ryokan

I can't speak highly enough of this hotel. The staff were amazing and many spoke english. We went for a room with a private indoor bath which allowed for one wall which was a huge window to be open. Even though it was winter it was an amazing experience to have the fresh mountain air combine with the hot bath. Being heavily tattooed I stuck with the private \"family baths\" (they have 4), the footbath and the one in our room. But one of the staff said if I waited till very late at night I could use the public ones when nobody was there. A rare treat for an onsen! The hotel itself is huge and very quiet, a nice change from our previous week in downtown Tokyo. They are also considerate of dietary restrictions, just be sure to mention what you can and can't eat. The food was amazing. My only regret was not staying longer. I'll be sure to return again!

This must be one of the best onsen hotels in Japan.... The service and the room were flawless. The hotel oozes both charm and character. My room was very large and had a separate lounge/smoking area which could be screened off from the main room by shoji doors. The glass windows could then be opened to look down onto the cascading gardens which were wonderful. My room also had a private onsen outdoors which was luxurious to say the least... :) However there are public onsen, a foot onsen and bookable private onsens within the sprawling complex as well. The hotel itself, which is in a magnificent hillside location above Gero is reachable by a speedy shuttle service operated by the hotel if you are arriving by train. Just ask at the tourist information booth at the station when you arrive what time the next one is. A great deal of the pleasure taken during my stay was the attentiveness and warm hospitality of the staff. An 18 course Kaiseki dinner was meticulously laid out and served over 2 hours in my room by my room attendant who spoke excellent English and was also kind enough to translate the menu to English for me which was very kind of her. The meal itself was exceptional in every way. The breakfast was another 13 courses as well and was... exceptional. This hotel has a unique charm and a mysterious quality to it and I would highly recommend it to anyone who would value such an experience :) It was worth every Yen I spent on it and I was reluctant to leave.....

Special location, special experience

Stunning location, gorgeous views, dramatic building. Rooms were everything you see in the pictures. Had a room with an outdoor private bath and it was heaven. Service was incredibly attentive and kind. English skills generally strong, but even with staff who spoke less, the service and effort were so helpful it didn't matter. The hotel is a grand, older resort - the dated decor in the moonlight bar/karaoke was part of the wonderful charm. Enjoyed watching the mature visitors performing Japanese classics in the bar. Dinner was fabulous - a beautiful, delicious kaiseki meal. Could have stayed another night to check out the other baths and explore the property.

Great service, outdated hotel

This is a very old, big ryokan which used to be top class. There are photos of the Emperor who had been there probably in the '60. Now it's very outdated, the furnishings and especially the moquette are old and covered by spots, the walls need to be repainted. The service is outstanding. Every room has a hostess who takes care of your futons and dinner. The food is amazing, dozens of beautifully prepared dishes. We spent two nights and we had two different menus and both included Hida beef (Japanese breed similar to Kobe one).

Uniquely Japanese, could be a bit more flexible

Yunoshimaken is a classic Japanese hotel. That means tatami matts in the room, and a futon rolled out for sleeping. It is therefore a must-experience if visiting Japan as there are few places like this. The one complaint we'd have is that part of being a Japanese-style hotel, means they are a little inflexible on some things, for example, if you want your meal served in the traditional style in your room, this must start before 7pm. That meant when we arrived at 6:30pm on our first day, we were rushing to feed and settle our baby while they were serving our meal, and we'd have preferred them to be a bit flexible and push things back half an hour. Nonetheless, this didn't take away from a unique and relaxing break.

Relax and Be Pampered Japanese Style

From the minute the shuttle met us at the train station, it was clear that the staff strove to make us feel that we were the most important guests ever. Our traditional Japanese tatami room was impeccably clean and spacious, and the dinner we were served in our room was delicious and memorable. A variety of hot spring baths - both private and shared, indoor and outdoor, assures that each guest can enjoy an onsen experience. This is a wonderful place to relax and rejuvenate after hectic times in Kyoto or Tokyo - and a nice respite from the oppressive heat of the cities. We stayed one night and loved every minute. Be forewarned: there is very little to do, so probably two days would be enough. Combine this visit with an overnight at Hida-Takayama, perhaps.
