Room is spacious for 4 of us . We stayed for 2days. Breakfast and hida dinner were very good especially on the 2nd day. Indoor and outdoor Onsen are good. However number of hair dryers apparently are insufficient and many guests were waiting for a while.

The staff are not rude but not extremely hospitable either. It lacks some traditional Japanese touch which we used to experience in the past.

However, it was an overall pleasant experience staying in a ryokan and having our own private onsen.

Nice people. Fyi, rail tracks right next to property so u do get train noise but it's not frequent. It does go late and early. No restaurants on property except for those who have meal included.

The hotel is dated which needs refurbishment. But the amenities offered were good. The Japanese style room we stayed was spacious which can fit in 7 futons. We had half board during our stay. The food served were amazing and looked beautiful which was beyond our imagination. Though the property itself offers only smoking rooms, we as non-smokers didn't find it a problem at all. And parking is free. We would definitely recommend it.

A good location from which to enjoy the Gero Onsen experience. Free shuttle from the train station makes it convenient. The dinner and breakfast are excellent if you like japanese style meals. Very convenient to local shopping, etc. Very enjoyable hot baths.
Recommended if you like public baths and ryokan style meals.

Bosenkan mean Riverview Inn, and it really offers a fine view of the Hida River. This is a traditional Japanese style place, with tatami mat rooms, nice yukata robes for guests, and a very nice indoor outdoor communal bath. I highly recommend it if you are staying in Gero Onsen, one of Japan's big three famous spas.

There were a number of facilities in the basement that were closed/covered hence not usable.

Deco and room is clean but looks wise of hotel/lobby/room is/looks dated.

Would suggest to remove the protection cap or cover or replace with a bigger one so that it fits universal travel adaptors as 2 out of 3 wall plugs was not usable due to universal travel adaptor not able to fit and have to resort to using the powerpoints for the TV / Fridge.

Quiet and older onsen by the river and train tracks in Gero onsen town. A shuttle service is providing certain hours, but we opted to walk to the resort from the train station. After a hot bath I recommend having a nice cold milk from the vending machines. Staff was friendly, room was clean, and it was fun to try the dinner/breakfast. Some instructions and info on how and what we were eating would have been nice but not knowing is a fun part of that experience! Thank you for having us!

We had the room with outdoor hot spring bath. Our room was very close to the train track so it can be quite noise, but it didn't affect us too much. The outdoor onsen was very nice and we saw the fireworks from our room (special thing the town organised for a couple of weeks). The room was spacious and we liked it very much.

The front staffs are mostly foreigners which was a little strange, especially when the hotel is supposed to be an old style onsen.

Meals were good, given that we were eating in the private room, I was hoping that the kaiseiki dinner won't be served altogether. Even if the hotel didn't have enough staffs to serve it course by course, perhaps they can at least separate the starters (cold dishes mainly), and the hot mains, because by the time we started eating them, they got a bit cold already.

And again, the staff who served us wasn't local. I'd have appreciated it, if the lady provided us with some explanations of the food, like the order of the food or how we are supposed to eat them. So the whole experience felt a little strange.

So overall, won't consider to stay there again and will try a different one if we go back to Gero.

We had a very very spacious family room for 3 with half board. Staff were excellent and could speak English too. Meals were omakase and exceptionally good. Corridoor reeks of cigarette smoke and we were concerned the rooms would be too but we were so glad they didn’t smell at all. Very comfortable and luxurious stay!

It's a nice property, a bit dated but it was good enough for one night and you don't expect 5-star big city modern luxury at Gero as the place is a beautiful little country town and you're there to get away from the crowds, big cities, skyscrapers etc and relax and enjoy the onsens and surroundings.

It's a traditional ryokan with tatami mats and futons. The room had a little smell but there's a deodoriser/humidifier and you can open the windows to let in the wonderful fresh mountain air. Best thing was the Kaisei dinner with Hada beef, there's so many dishes and we couldn't finish it all! Breakfast was great too.

Location wise, it's about 10-15 mins walk from the main train station, easy to find by Google Maps, but they do offer free pick up service by shuttle buses at scheduled times or a taxi, just need to contact them to arrange. It's also about 20-25 mins walk to the Gassho-Mura village which is a nice walk through the Main Street and up the hill and worth the walk up as you get to see the town.

The hotel has a big onsen and so good to relax after a day's walk. Also, around Gero, there are many free footbaths which you can enjoy, the best one is the one next to the river below the main bridge from the train station to the Main Street. The hotel also has a nice garden with koi fishes and a footbath too for you to enjoy as well.

Overall, I would recommend Bosenkan as good value with the dinner and breakfast and onsen included. I would have included photos too.

I will definitely not come back here again. We reached the hotel at around 14:50 hrs and eventhough the room was ready, we were denied early check in. We were asked to wait till 15:00hrs. Next, the onsen facilities. Seriously, only shampoo, conditioner and body wash were provided. No facial cleanser etc. Frankly speaking, this is the worst onsen hotel i have ever stayed. Breakfast was horrible too, btw. Please look elsewhere. You deserve better.

The property is quite old but I was really looking forward to the original 60ies style, large garden and large Ryokan-style rooms, which were all amazing. Also the traditional Japanese breakfast and dinner were excellent, with lovely service and supreme quality. I really enjoyed it.
I was a little disappointed by the onsen, I would have expected for instance a cold bath and better opening times especially in the morning. Also other amenities were old or closed, for instance there is no bar or no milk vending machine.
Particularily the reception staff was not well informed and sent us twice to wrong places, and even sold us a spa pass despite the next day being a national holiday with all spas closed. All hotels close their onsen in the morning for cleaning so despite an onsen retreat planned we didn't get to use any - and when we returned the hotel wanted to charge us for late checkout despite us being sent to the wrong places twice. Overall I would not come back, and the whole morning wasted was really a letdown for Gero onsen as a town overall.

This is indeed an older hotel and the room smells tatami Thebes moment we stepped in. We were given a large corner room which faces the river and also the train track. The reviews about the loud train noise was true but it didn’t really bothers me and I slept well after a good onsen bath at the hotel. Opted for private bath and it was a good experience. Staff are helpful and efficient, There are a few Chinese-speaking staff and those who speak only japanese communicate with me with an online translator! The location is slightly away from the center but it’s within walking distance to the onsen street and good food.

Very good hot spring hotel with fabulous kaiseki.

Bosenkan means river view hotel and it really has a good river view. It’s a Very good hot spring hotel with fabulous kaiseki dinner and breakfast. We have enjoyed carefully prepared dishes every meal. Open air bath and public bath was very hot and was good for me. My room was a spacious one bedroom + one living room type Japanese tatami room. The hotel however was slightly old and needs some touch ups. When it’s raining ceiling at B2 was leaking. Staffs were extreamly kind. A foreign staff however needs to learn Japanese culture well in order to serve customer in a proper way.
I will definitely come back again.

The property is rather old and somewhat worn, but they do keep it clean. The onsen is very nice. Wonderful view from room, however the noise from the trains passing by is loud!
We arrived before noon and the lobby and reception area look deserted, as the check in time is 3pm. Staff appeared after we rang a bell, who helped to store our lugg so we can go for lunch and walks. Helpful to offer us a walking map with lunch options and umbrellas as it was starting to rain. It is a small town so everywhere is within walking distance. Upon check-in, welcome snacks and tea were served in room. Didn't realized there was tea in the pot until it was removed when our futon was laid out. Would be helpful if arr shuttle can run earlier for pick up and dept later than 1010hrs to the train station upon request, though I understand the shuttle timings are meant to coincide with the check-in/out time.

This Ryokan is comfortable, relaxing, and charming. It had everything we expected and more. The room was very spacious and had a spectacular view of the river. The baths were a joy to soak in. The food was very good too. It is clearly an older building, but we found that aspect to be very charming. Since the facilities are very well maintained and updated where necessary, there is no demerit in the age of the building. The staff are wonderful too. We had a lovely stay and look forward to coming again.

Their service is very good. The staff started to contact me once I have made booking, ensure we do not have any food allergies and If we have any special requests. Service is good, room is super big. This is the first time we stayed in such a big room in Japan. We were awe! Food is great, onsen is great, the shop in hotel also sells local snacks and the price is quite cheap. Walking distance around Gero town area, but frankly, it's nothing much to walk about. Spent more time in hotel enjoying the room, atmosphere and onsen. They have public (indoor and outdoor) and private onsen. The hotel also has shuttle service to and fro train station. The staff also helped us to book bus ticket to our next destination. We were glad that we chose Bosenkan. They also give us complimentary gift as our anniversary gift. Nice gesture.

Worth staying with half board meal plan in Bosenkan. I enjoy with Japanese kaiseki meal in private room both dinner(Hida beef set)&breakfast after relax in onsen.
You can use free shuttle bus service from Gero station to hotel in the afternoon & back to station in the morning.Great view with Hida river&beautiful hotel garden from my room.Even a bit old hotel but clean and comfort to sleep here.
Very helpful staff,Have to say thank you again for sending my jacket that I forgot and get it next day before my flight. Worth staying & recommended to relax in Bosenkan .

Good location for exploring the little onsen town!

Clean room, higher floor, had a very good view of surrounding mountain, river, and the hotel's courtyard garden. Timing of stay was just right to catch Gero's year end impressive fireworks with other guests from the hotel garden. The hotel private onsen was great! Our first experience. Town has many footbath onsens scattered about the little town. Clear hot onsen water just runs throughout the drainage in Gero! You can easily find good teppanyaki restaurants too!

A member in our party was short-serve a dish - I have never experienced this anywhere else in Japan. Dinner was basic compared to even the minshuku that I paid 40% less so I was really disappointed. The property was run down and staff provided the worst of service in my 5 nights staying in onsen hotels and minshuku in this trip.

An old beauty that needs work

This hotel is past it's prime. The onsen (hot springs bath) is great, which is why I came, but the rest of the hotel is really rundown. The hotel has a beautiful garden overlooking the river which runs through the city, and will serve you a traditional keiseki, or formal dinner, in the dining room. Unfortunately they also serve more or less the same thing at breakfast. Great for people with a Japanese palate, but not for lost Texans. The riverwalk in the center of town is lovely, and there are hot spring \"footbaths\" all around to soak your feet in. Not much else in the way of attractions however. We decided to leave rather than stay another day.

A truly memorable Japanese spa experience

This traditional, reasonably priced Japanese hotel is set by the river in a wonderful natural hot-springs resort. Although Westerners, we were treated with warmth and hospitality throughout, including in pre-visit emails (we were asked what size dressing gown (yukata) should be prepared for us, and advised to order dinner in advance). One sleeps on mats on the floor, which are set out by the staff before bedtime, and goes everywhere, in the hotel (including lobby and all meals) and for strolls outside on the street, wearing your yukata. Without doubt the meals (breakfast and dinner) were the highlight... both are elaborate, unhurried multi-course banquets served in a private room (for 2 in our case) by a personal waitress. Considering the difference in price of a room with and without meals, these meals were unbelievably inexpensive. Another nice feature was the hot-springs, inside and outside. The only drawback was that bathing is, by tradition, without clothes and so men and women bathe in separate areas. There was no provision for enjoying the hot baths together with my partner, clothed or otherwise. If you're looking for a memorable Japanese spa experience, this is a very good choice.

Relaxing at Gero Onsen Bosenkan

GOOD :
(1) We were checked into our room quite quickly and delighted to discover room size was great for all four of us to stay comfortably.
(2) The welcome snacks in our room were a sweet touch.
(3) We enjoyed the onsen facilities and the public footbath area.
(4) Retail shop on ground level contained good variety of items and the staff was helpful in assisting us with choices.
NOT SO GOOD :
(1) Occasional passing trains may seem noisy for some other travellers.
(2) Generally clean but needs more dusting : luggage bags placed on floor coated with thin film of dust and some friends were sneezing badly throughout stay.
NOT GREAT :
(1) Only one toilet cubicle which seemed a little small and may be quite claustrophobic for some people. Some of us ended up using the public toilet facilities.
(2) Dinner service staff seemed to be in a hurry to introduce/serve the dishes.

建物は古いが、リノベーションしている様で古臭さは感じない
大浴場も利用したが、昔のままか古臭い（悪い意味ではない）
館内は広く、廊下も広い
が、寒かった
暖房は付けてはいるのだろうが、空間が広すぎて寒かった
部屋の中も、どちらかと言えば寒かった（エアコンは付けていたが）
布団は薄っぺらかった
毛布など別途置いておけばいいのではないだろうか？
食事は別室になるが、露天風呂付きの部屋からはやや遠い
食事内容は良かった
インドネシアの技能実習生の方が接客は良かった
全体的には宿泊して良かった
また露天風呂付きの部屋に泊まりたい

굉장히 세월을 머금은 유서깊은 온천! 비록 세월만큼 시설은 다소 낡았지만 눈내리는 아름다운 노천 온천으로 모든게 용서되는 진짜 멋진 추억을 만들어준 곳!위치도 중심부와 조금 떨어져 있어 더 호젓한 온천 여행을 즐길수 있었어요! 가격대비 완전 만족!
