Clean room with clean towels etc. Food was good but disappointed with gluten free options. Breakfast had the same very dry GF bread and same muffins very morning. Home made GF rolls available at dinner, were delicious but not always available . The dinner food options of meat, vegetables and salads was very good. Christmas dinner though, was a bit disappointing.
Friendly staff.
Visitors must be aware that costs charged for entering and leaving Kruger Park can mount up, plus manual firm filling becomes a bit tedious. Not fault of the hotel, it's government policy.

Safaris in this area are very expensive this offers great value for money. Food was excellent, particularly the Boma at dinner.The safaris were great as the guides really try to find the big game. We stayed at an expensive lodge in a Private Concession and felt the Kruger gates safaris were better although with more traffic

What an incredible place! The staff treat you like family and nothing is too much trouble. Excellent food and service set in a beautifully curated hotel on the river bank. We were spoiled every day with Elephant, Hippos, bush buck, warthog and nyala eating and drinking directly in front of the hotel. Sipping a cocktail and watching these beautiful creatures was a daily highlight!

Somewhat disappointed from previous great experie

Been coming back to this place atleast once a year because of their implacable hospitality and great service for the last 12 years. This time around though I was disappointed. Reception just gave is the keys without checking if we know where our rooms were and no offer to assist us with our baggage. The next day, we realised the bathtub was not cleaned. Yes I’d cleaned it but not perfectly the night before and had expected them to do a proper job the next morning but was utterly disappointed that it wasn’t. The food was still great, rooms looked great though. Just the bathtub and basins in room 420 need stopper changes. The water leaks while you bath.

The staff was attentive and helpful to our needs and made sure we were comfortable at all times. The game tours are amazing and I enjoyed seeing some of the big 5! I do recommended doing an afternoon tour as well as an all day tour. The food options were ok enjoyed breakfast more than dinner. The resort is wonderful and I was able to see a Hurd of elephants by the pool before sunset. I would recommend this place to others and stay here again if I am in Kruger!

Our stay was wonderful. The hotel blends into the jungle environment for nicely. Even though the baboons are noisy running on the roofs in the morning, it is fun to see them and the other monkeys playing all around the resort.

The buffets had a larger variety of options with different options at each night. We had friends who were celebrating an anniversary while there and the singing staff were incredible with their version of a happy anniversary song!

The only thing what would have been nicer was if the pool was warmer (the pool that overlooks the river is shaded and quite cool and cloudy).

But we had an absolutely wonderful stay at a beautiful resort.

It was a nice hotel, not too big, close to one entrance to the park. The food was good. Trees were beautiful. One can see elephants and other animals from the pool bar. The main problem is that their safaris, or park tours, are too expensive, much more expensive than those organized by the park. But the vehicles are confortable, and drivers nice and helpful.

Great family-/child-friendly hotel adjacent to Kruger Gate, making it super convenient for safaris (5am departure = 530am wildlife sightings!). Pool view is stunning, and a further kids pool make it pleasant and entertaining for kids. Staff were super attentive to ensure our stay was pleasant! The dinner buffet was incredible!

We stopped at this hotel as part of our honeymoon. Amazing hotel. Straight away you feel welcomed and comfortable. The staff are very helpful. The room was lovely and it was decorated for our honeymoon with a bottle of bubbly and petals. The facilities were great with two pools and loads of other activities on site. The food was a buffet style but with so much choice and delicious fresh food. It was a great experience eating outside. We booked a morning safari tour which was incredible. We saw so much wildlife and the guide was so helpful and informative (went in August). We would definitely come back again it was an amazing first safari experience.

What an amazing vacation! You literally cannot beat the location and wow, the hotel was stunning. Good food to order, lovely staff, and even a little shop for souvenirs! Cannot recommend this hotel enough. Also, highly recommend booking “Amos” as your game driver with Kurt Safari Co (who the hotel uses for safaris) he was amazing! One of the managers of the hotel, Sarah, was so sweet and accommodating. Also had a lovely spa experience!

Location is right at the gate so you’re on safari in minutes. The pool overlooks a river and day one we enjoyed a herd of elephants right out front. The following days we enjoyed hippos in the morning. All of this best enjoyed through binoculars. The rooms had ceiling fans (as well as ac) and the cleaning staff mostly kept doors closed when cleaning so we were delighted to have little to no mossies in our room. There are several bars on property with amiable staff and the grounds are generally beautiful.

The drawbacks we found were the following: the food was ok. I wish they had hand sanitizer somewhere at the restaurant when hundreds of people are serving themselves with the same serving spoons. My husband watched a man drop the serving spoon on the ground 3 times (!!!!) and then try to walk away leaving it for someone else to serve themself with. Gross. He alerted the kitchen staff and they replaced it immediately. Dinner staff is overwhelmed, they need more people. Out of 3 nights we were only helped with drinks once and never again did we receive anyone checking in on us; even that evening the man was scurrying and often hard to find. Overall, Kruger is a tourist trap (the park not the hotel) so we spent more time at the hotel. We wished the pools were heated so we could actually enjoy the pool deck. Or that they had a hot tub/sauna to enjoy during winter. At nearly $300/night we felt they fell short in places that seemed obvious to curate a good stay for this rate.

A real African Experience that is so affordable

My knowledge of this property goes right back to 1987 when we bought time share at this location, and the original Karos Kruger Hotel was pretty basic. After an absence of many years we booked to stay at the now Kruger Gate and one of the new bedroom suites. From check in to our room, to drinks over looking the Kruger Park to dinner to breakfast - in a word. Excellent and the staff are superb.
Having stayed in the past at a number of private game lodges in the Sabi Sands area most are outstanding but can cost anything up to $1000 per night per person.
The Kruger Gate Hotel offers exceptional value and a great bush experience at a fraction of the cost of private lodges. And they can arrange daily and night drives in the Kruger.
I would highly recommend fly in or drive to the Kruger - stay in the hotel and enjoy daily self drives in the Kruger
A wonderful way to experience the bush, and African food and hospitality at a really affordably rate

Fantastic Hotel - sadly with lacking Service

Going to that hotel since 25 years. While the food improved over the years and finally is declared on the buffet what it is we sadly noticed the lack of service quality dropped drastically. As example on the pool deck we ordered 4 pizzas. 1st and 2nd order went „missing“ after complaining twice the supervisor then attended to our table and re-ordered our food. After 2.5 hours waiting we finally got our food which was very nice considering we are sitting in the middle of the bush. Overall still a very nice hotel with great location to enjoy the Krugerpark and the bushveld.

The stay was great, however the checking in was terrible. Hotels.com never informed the hotel of our booking and therefore when checking into the hotel room there was a lot of confusion on our reservation booking. The hotel and myself had to try and contact hotels.com to confirm our booking. Big shout out to the front manager at the hotel, she was really great!

The buffet ran out of breakfast as well as dinner. We were a group of 14 people with young children and had to wait till after 20h30 for the kitchen to make more good. There were more than the allowed number of people staying in one room. There were beer cans left on the steps after guests had a party. Very dissapointed.

The room is comfortable, the bed fantastic and the infinity pool with view of the Kruger and elephants eating right in front is priceless. The staff is friendly. The reason for my low score is the breakfast. I booked this stay to go to Kruger and spend the golden hours in the park. The 6.30 breakfast time would allow me to have a quick and good breakfast before I go in, but when I arrived at 6.30 they were still setting up breakfast. I left after 7 AM and breakfast set up was still not ready so I just grabbed a quick sandwich and yoghurt. When I mentioned it to the staff at the reception they just shrugged and said, we will tell them... There were 10 other guests also eager to have an early breakfast and also left without full breakfast. Disappointing.

Absolutely loved the hotel, the setting was awesome and the staff very friendly and helpful. The food was great!
on the 27th April 2021 we arrived at breakfast at 6:30am only to find they were still setting up. Everything was only ready at 7am which is pretty unacceptable as we specifically wanted an early start to the day.
We also had a leaking toilet and had to request 3 times that the toilet be fixed. We had a broken kettle which was replaced with another broken kettle, it would not switch off.
Other than that I will definitely be back!

There is no one to carry your luggage when you arrive or depart as the car park is some distance from the Hotel.

The location is perfect, the dinner is quite bad for vegetarians, ended up just eating some buttered bread for my stay. We had an issue with the cleanliness, our toilet was leaking a lot to the point that we’d have to put towels down which was gross and found cockroaches in the room!

But the staff are great and the location can’t be beaten. Not sure if we’d come back but we enjoyed the park itself and the pool deck area of the hotel. Breakfast was great, really enjoyed the options.

Fantastic hotel in great location

We had a fantastic 2 night stay at the Protea Hotel. The room is a good size and a short walk away from the bar and restaurant. I think the breakfast buffet could be improved, but the food selection at dinner was amazing every night! The hotel is literally a 2 minute drive from Paul Kruger Gate, so it's perfect for anyone hoping to self drive. There is a bridge about 1 min drive from the hotel, where we regularly saw over 10 hippos relaxing each day. The hotel bar shuts relatively early (10pm), so do not expect to be able to drink late into the night. My main issue with the hotel, is that it was very difficult to contact them prior to the stay to obtain a price list for their safaris and this information does not appear to be online. As it was not clear what they were offering, I had to use a separate company to book our guided game drives. However, when we arrived at the hotel, we were provided with their full price list for game drives. I think this information should be more available and it should be easier to contact the hotel for information. Overall, the hotel itself is beautifully decorated and has two outdoor pools. It is perfect for those looking for a safari experience and don't want to spend an extortionate amount on luxury safari lodges. Will definitely come again!

Not Good Enough!

This is a nice hotel, clean and well maintained. The meals were served Buffett style with lots of choices. I scored this lower because the room I booked was described as King bed with valley view and mini bar - we received none of these and all we got was a “so sorry”. Not good enough in my book - we won’t be back, I believe you should get what you have paid for and what you were promised. Very disappointed!

Despite giving flight details far in advance of stay and reconfirming our arrival details on day of arrival we were left at the airport for over an hour after the airport closed.... in the middle of Kruger park. We were lucky a kind lady from SA Airlink stayed with us until the hotel got their act together to send someone to collect us. (After several phone calls!!!!) Extremely poor service!!!!!
The hotel bars shut in the evening and building work to main restaurant during our stay meant that one meal we sat outside, in the rain, in a doorway eating our food. Not what I would expect from a Marriott.

Shortage of towels at poolside for a \"five star\"??

Very good. But for a Hotel of this calibre and location, food was not great but acceptable. Breakfast to go (packed) can be improved on. Location is superb.
But to ask for 3 towels at the poolside and be told there is only one available is totally unacceptable.

Dream break for mom!!

It's a dream break away for any mom. Meals are buffet style. So everyone in the family can eat what they like. Food was excellent and staff at breakfast and dinner very friendly and professional. They could do with bit more training at reception though. On arrival our key cards did not work on our room door. We had to go back to reception to get it programmed. We requested extra cups for coffee for our room that we never got. So we had to share.

We have stayed at this hotel several times and have always enjoyed our stay. This time it was like staying on a construction site, had we known the hotel was undergoing renovations we would not have booked. Competely destroyed the ambience. The bar service was very poor, it took us 15 minutes to track down the bar person, and then another 10 minutes to get the bill. The breakfast service was also poor, we had to ask for muesli, muffins and scones(which they had run out of before 10 am), all the jam and marmalade jars were empty. We won't stay again.

Hotel deliberately double-charged us for the stay. We still have not received the money back, over a month later. This constitutes fraud in my opinion. I am owed almost £1000.
Extensive building work was ongoing and the dust and noise were intolerable. Worst hotel experience ever.

Couldn't find booking of both rooms when I arrived at check in. I had to provide proof of booking for the other room to be confirmed. Hence rooms were not together which was an inconvenience as a family booking. Overall average hotel. Location is amazing, quick access to the Kruger. Meals are good. Service levels inconsistent

This is a well located, generally very nice hotel very close to Kruger gate. I have stayed here before and enjoyed myself and this time I came back with some friends. Over all, the stay was okay but several minor irritations abound.
We arrived to find parts of the hotel under construction. Not a big deal but the hotel should alert the guests ahead of time. Doing so indicates that the hotel does not take its guests for granted. The next morning, we were checking out early to enter the park at 6am. We had booked two rooms. One paid for upfront and the other to be settled. I told reception I was going to load up my car and come back to get my family and would pay the bill then. During this period, the guy at reception must have asked my party five times whether I was coming back - and then actually came out to where I was loading the car. Rather insulting; they had my credit card so what’s up with that? Then, of the two rooms, one had breakfast included and the other without. Because we were leaving early, we would be able to eat on property. During my previous stay two years ago, the hotel had accommodated me by providing a complimentary boxed breakfast. I discussed this with reception at check-in and was told that I would only need to pay for two but when time came to pay the bill the following morning, we were charged for four breakfasts and all attempts to resolve this failed. These irritations irked!!

The accommodations were nice. The dinner buffet was excellent. I found the front desk staff to be professional but need improvement in communication. I would recommend having a sufficient amount of adaptors so those of us traveling from other nations can plug in our electronic devices. Furthermore, each guest should be informed that they can order breakfast the night before for the early morning safari. We were unaware and consequently were the only ones with no breakfast to take with us.

Every thing is average. Staff response to your need is very slow. We asked for extra towel almost every day but never got it. The air condition man whom i was told will come to show me how it works never came. Food was good though
