Unit was spacious but needed a bit of refreshing. Carpets had some stains. One small part of the carpet was held down by duct tape. Counters were delaminating. No TV in the bedroom was a bummer. For some people this isn't a big deal but we were able to faintly hear someone in a neighboring unit snoring. Fortunately I was able to drown it out by playing a white noise loop on my laptop all night.

Having a deck was nice. Short walk to the beach from our unit. Others would've been a bit further but not bad. Outdoor pool was fine. Didn't visit indoor pool.

The one bedroom unit had a strange layout. You went down half a flight of stairs to the bedroom. Jacuzzi in the bedroom was nice but odd that it's surrounded by carpet.

Not a bad experience overall. We've paid just as much for places that didn't have some of the cosmetic issues.

Location is fine if you don't mind driving 12-15 minutes to get out to the main strip. Anyone that's been to the Outer Banks knows you'll be driving a lot to go to places. Just have to add a bit more time staying in Duck.

Seriously outdated. My units coffee table was falling apart. The TV power cord kept falling out. Outlets didn’t hold phone charger. Carpet is ancient and rippled (needs stretching). Friends unit smelled musty. (They’ve been vacationing here for over 30 years and the couch is the same couch from the 1st time they visited. Same unit every year and told it’d be upgraded but hasn’t.) Location is great and everything was very clean.

We stayed slightly off-season here (mid September). The complex was very quiet and we were lucky to have a third-floor unit with a nice view from the balcony and some of the windows.

There are a lot of great recreational amenities in this complex, although not all of them were in top condition or well-maintained. Still, for the price we thought that this was a really good value. The complex is very large and nicely situated, right on the beach on the ocean side and a few minutes’ walk to the sound side and the Duck boardwalk.

We really appreciated the indoor and outdoor pools, the Pickleball court, the hot tub, but there were also lots of other recreational options, like basketball and volleyball, corn hole, even outdoor chess.

The apartment was nicely, appointed and clean, if a little dated in the kitchen and bathrooms. Still, for the money, it was large and had good flow.

We had a very nice stay and although the buildings inside are very much outdated it was very clean other then some mold in the bathrooms. We rented a golf cart for transportation during the stay and the power hook up to charge at our building wasn’t working so that was inconvenient. Luckily we had other family there in different buildings and power hook up at theirs worked. The staff was helpful while there which is more then you know appreciated. Overall we’ll be back.. thank you for a pleasant stay

The second day we had to move to another condo. Barrier Island told us it was how Expedia sent the reservation but we learned from employees that it was how Barrier Island managed the units. 4 families had to move between units I will not be staying there again.

We enjoyed our stay. My only criticism would be that we received an email 3 days before we checked in that stated there is limited bedding and to bring our own. Upon callling the front desk, we learned that there are sheets, pillows and a light blanket. The email is for those that want a comforter or multiple heavy blankets. As we were flying in to NC, we obviously didn’t bring bedding with us. Just be assured, all the linens are provided. Only beach towels are not provided but those are easily purchased if forgotten. The email was a little confusing. Enjoy the area!!

Indoor pools were closed “indefinitely” for construction but according to the email I was sent by the resort shortly before my stay , they were supposed to be done by fall 2022. My stay was in June 2023. Other than that, the room was nice and the outdoor pools and recreation was good. No complaints other than the indoor pools being closed which had pictures online so it was misleading.

The unit seemed pretty clean. However, it is severely dated and in need of repairs and updates. There are a lot of dangerous angles, especially going on the deck. The roofline is down at head level, and if you aren't paying attention, you can seriously hurt yourself. Overall it was ok, but could definitely be very nice with repairs. Also, if you have trouble climbing stairs, this is NOT the place for you!

Barrier Island Station is in a unique location, it's located between the sound and the ocean off NC 12, with easy access to either or. It is also located about 2 miles from downtown Duck and all the shops. They have easy access to the ocean and their pool within the property and plenty of parking if needed. Barrier Island has a Snack shack located by the pool and a coffee shop located at the front of their property off NC 12, they have games and activities located throughout their property, we enjoyed our stay.

Close to beach. On second night there the hot water heater burst an shot water out of the ceiling onto the dining room table and surrounding floor. Had to wait for maintainence since it was after hours. Turned our water off all night. Moved us the next day. Well we moved ourselves basically. Way up on top floor again. I had asked for a bottom unit sick I had hip surgery in July. Not too acommadating. Basically another dirty room with spiders and water bugs. 😫😫 I couldnt wait for our vacation but then couldnt wait to leave. Never Again!! Clean your resort up!! I might be more accomidating for the ADAMS FAMILY!!😡

Good...the resorts pool and other amenities were very nice.

Bad...the room smelled very bad (like cat urine) and there was toothpaste in the sink. They did come in and try to fix the issue, (cleaned the unit and used an instrument to get the smell out), but the smell was back by the end of the day.

The unit was very nice, especially since we booked it at hotel rates. Having read a previous comment about roaches, I was glad to find there were none, and to learn that they only have a problem when they're driven in from the beach during storms. Their monthly pest control seems effective.

Upon checkin we were given 2 keys, one did not work. Upon entering our unit, we were greeted with a major leak in the ceiling of the living room. The carpet was completely soaked. Apparently, this had been a problem because they had screwed in a board in the ceiling to hold it up. The screws were coming out. The unit looked like it hadn’t been maintained since the 1970’s. Nothing in that unit looked liked the pictures we saw online! We called the front desk, asked to moved, but she informed me that they are fully booked and maintenance would be out. Maintenance came, brought a dehumidifier, and got some of the water out as best they could. Later that afternoon, after washing my infants bottles, a puddle appeared in the kitchen floor. Called front desk, maintenance again comes and eventually fixed the sink. That evening I pulled out the sofa bed for my 12 year old to sleep on and there are chip crumbs all over the couch, a squeaky toy under the couch, and the mattress looked like it had been there for 50 years. 2 days later it rains, and water is dripping from ceiling again. It was evening, front desk line sent me to security of which he informs me maintenance has gone for evening, but he would be sure to let them know in the morning. Maintenance came at 8:45am the next morning, our checkout day. This gentleman apologized for the conditions we had to stay in and said the ceiling could give way any moment. He said he would speak to GM. Unit 109 should never be rented!

Absolutely HORRIBLE! Booked for 3 nights, only to be told on the third night we would have to move to a different unit bc the owners are coming in. So I would have to move my family of 5, all of our things, food, etc. Was told this was a “courtesy.” Apparently they don’t know the definition of courtesy. Then told us we would have to stay on the property til they were ready to move us, it didn’t matter if we had plans to be off property doing things. The staff at the desk were extremely rude and refused to take responsibility saying it was Hotels.com fault. It’s not, they tell the site what’s available and the site books it with no knowledge that renters will get moved around inconveniently and treated awful. It ruined our entire stay. let’s add that the deck was covered in algae, mold, and bugs. The entire place is extremely outdated and uncomfortable. The pool is about the only thing this place has going for it. HIGHLY DO NOT RECOMMEND!

Bad stay honestly - we booked via expedia for a 3 night stay, but the moment we checked in they mentioned something that this was a time share and hence had to move us from 506 to 703 after the 1st day. This really tied us up in moving around freely and repacking and reloading stuff to the new unit.
Once we got to the new unit, multiple things were broken - door, bathroom lock, dishwasher had to be replaced etc. The maintenance personnel were very quick and got those fixed though. Again, the overall front office staff was rude and unfriendly.
The area and rooms aren't very clean either with smell and swarming insect droppings.
I wouldn't recommend this. Sorry!

When I first arrived me and my kids were put in a room with no working stove and some bugs in the room. We thought we could make the nest of that room. Only intill the morning at 9:30 the office tells us we have to repack everything and move to a whole other location. Which was another building up three long flights of stairs. I explained I was disabled and have a handicap in my foot where I’m not able to do stairs. They said that’s your problem. This is the only room we have available.
I asked for some assistance with moving my bags as I also had two children with me. Walter the owner said he would help. He picked up one piece of luggage and said he would come back for us and the rest of our things but never came back.
We had already been on stand by all day waiting for this other room. We then made our way to the other building to find out it was infested and I mean infested with bugs. I’ve never seen so many bugs in my life. Ever bug imaginable. The front door was covered inside and out with bugs. Everyone you walk in and walk out you got a nice mouthful and hair full of them. My kids we extremely scared to even enter. When we got inside the ceiling had a bad infestation of spiders and flying bugs. It was covered like a beehive. The beds had bugs in them. There were dead bugs everywhere too, because there were so many.
When I asked the front desk on more than one occasion that they need to exterminate and move us they didn’t do anything. This was the worst trip!

Nothing. It started when we arrived and we checked in with security and asked if there was a code dor the indoor pool and arcade room, the building with all the ameneties. They told us that the building was knocked down and will be rebuilt. This was not mentioned in the description online. The ameneties is why we chose this place. The apartment has never been renovated. Tubs backed up with water while taking showers. There are bugs throughtout the place. When we first arrived we found many rodent droppings in the kitchen cabinets. We contacted the office and they sent someone out the next day. We showed the guy the droppings and he said let me see what the boss wants to do and ledt. No one ever came back or contacted us. Worse place ever! DO NOT STAY THERE!

This is an honest review..I read the other reviews prior to booking. I knew the property was dated and I read reviews about getting additional charges at check in....well, I called and emailed the property prior to checking in but I was still charged a cleaning fee of $125 and a resort fee of $25 upon check in. They charged me even after I showed them the email I received from the property stating all fees have been paid. Since I was on vacation, I did not make a scene and simply sent another email to the Resort and I received a response the next day by telephone. I was told they would refund the $150 because they stated I was not aware of the additional fees....no apology. With that said, I only received my refund because they got caught. As for the property, it is as described by almost all the reviews...The property is in dire need of updating but it is acceptable for the price. However, based on the shady check in process and possible criminal actions by adding charges not noted by the property....I can not recommend this property. In fact, STAY AWAY!

The facilities felt run down and old. The couch in the room looked worn and old. The doors to unlock the room kept getting stuck. The hot water took forever to turn on, and it did not always turn on. The exterior of the building was dirty and filled with cobwebs. The basketball court was fun, but we had to bring our own basketball because the ones they provided were flat. Additionally, there was an unknown fee of $125 that we were not informed about until we checked out. The fee was a cleaning fee because we did not stay a full week.

I liked the suite I stayed in. It was more than I expected. The only thing I didn't like was the cobwebs all around each of the outside of the suites. Another thing I didn't like was that I had to drive all around the whole property just to get back out to the main road. One last thing I really didn't like was when I got back home I noticed an extra $20 charge from Barrier Island Station. I have no idea what that extra amount was for. I called them and they said it was from Expedia. I called Expedia and they said it was Barrier Island. At first I thought it was Expedia but the more I think about it I think it was from Barrier. I have had no problems with Expedia as far as booking. So next time I decide to visit Duck I will book with someone else. And if I do see another charge from them I will know its them and I won't ever stay there again.

The unit we were given had a spider infestation. I mean spiders everywhere, even inside our unit. You killed 1 and 3 more popped out of nowhere. We asked for a different unit and were told they couldn't help. We complained about the spiders and asked for something to be done. On the first day, they sent housekeeping to sweep. The second day, maintenance came and said it was bad, we weren't exaggerating, and would get an exterminator out. The third day, maintenance came again, said the exterminator was going to come and do the inside but couldbt do the outside. The man from maintenance tried to power wash the outside, but couldn't get them all. The exterminator never came for the inside. We had to move to another unit for our final night because the owner was coming. Surprise, the exterminator came that same day due to the owner coming. Our last night in the new unit was great. No spiders, and we could finally come and go as we pleased. My family was terrified to come and go out of the first unit due to the spiders. My grandkids wouldn't sleep in the rooms for fear of the spiders. It wasn't enjoyable at all. The maintenance personnel that came out was great. They tried to help us. The front desk just kept telling us, \"they aren't going to hurt you.\"

Big screw up with my reservation.

From the moment we checked in things went downhill. We entered our unit and discovered that not only was the unit not ready because it had not been cleaned, but that it was a 1 bedroom, not a 2 bd as we had reserved. The check in office added another studio unit to give us another bedroom, but the unit were not adjoining, and we had 2 children with us. We made do, but it wasn't the best arraignment. One of the units needed an upgrade. Overall appearance was shabby. Worn out sofas, range had one bad burner, kitchen floor was ripped up, bed was old and uncomfortable. We did enjoy our stay in Duck, but not because our units were that nice. Now I'm finding that Barrier Island is trying to charge me for the additional unit. I'll probably be battling that issue for a while. Don't know if we will stay here again, and am disappointed with Hotels.com for not getting this reservation straight. I'm sure Hotels & Barrier Island will be pointing fingers at each other.

Review of Duck beach and Barrier station resort

The beach was OK, not very cleaned up. Two people fell on the steps to the beach because nobody cleaned off the sand of the steps.
The resort was dirty, bugs everywhere and not cleaned off the doors. Inside of the condo dirty and not well maintained. Toilets would not flush, had to call maintainence and they placed a new toilet. Roof in the dining room leaked every time it rained.
Overall this place is not worth the money, it looks really good on the pictures but beware it’s not nice. Pool was not clean either. We will definitely not be coming back to this resort or even OBX. The beaches are not as nice as South Carolina.

It was perfect for our needs. We wanted a vacation on the beach. The location is great. It kind of had a cabin feel. Also had enough space for my husband and I and 3 kids. The unit had a full kitchen we did not use. The staff at the complex was friendly let us check in early. We did have to deal with some bugs by the doorway but nothing to crazy. The decor a little out dated but we did not spend alot of time indoors a good place to lay your head for the night.
A very good family atmosphere. We spent time on the beach, a fishing charter, and did a horse tour in carolla. We will definitely go back in the future so much to do in one area.

Very disappointing and NEVER going back.

I will not go back. When I booked, I was never informed that I would have to change rooms on my last day. We lost a whole day of our vacation because we needed to stay there and wait to be transferred to a different unit. We had a six year old, a newborn and a person with handicap having to move from one unit to a new unit up three levels for one night. When we completed this, our whole day was gone. The people at the check in was not helpful or sympathetic, they just said it is their busy season and this is the way it will be. There were others there that were having to transfer also, and none of them were happy either.

Very cute little condos that were roomy and clean. Very nice facilities on the grounds. The only thing I didn't care for was the amount of bugs that swarm but its the great outdoors and that is to be expected as summer approaches.

Great spring break location

Great family vacation. Location is perfect. The beach is private! Our unit had three bedrooms and two baths. Full kitchen. Everything we needed. A little dated but the price was unmatchable. Showers and beds need attention. Otherwise we’ll plan to go back!!

The property was clean, staff nice, and amenities excellent. I could see the ocean from my deck and hear the waves, wonderful. Although the place was clean I paid for a three bedroom but only got a two bdrm. The place was old and drastically needed updating. There were large burn holes in the kitchen floor, the beds were terribly uncomfortable. I am not usually particular but I did not sit on the couch unless I had a blanket under me. The couch was disgusting, stains, etc. The last day when I tried the dishwasher it did not run. I spoke with the rental agent and she said she couldn't do anything I would have to contact you. I would like a discount as I paid for a three bedroom and only got two. Another couple I spoke to who were going to stay at the place decided to go to the nearest hotel. Unfortunately I did not have that option.

I was here 20 years ago and recall loving the place. Well as said by all the other reviews the place is exactly the same.. it is a beautiful location but condos really need updating as well as the pool areas and grounds. I think the tennis courts are the only thing looking in good shape. I had to fight the urge to go out and buy a paint brush and can of white paint for the cabinets and trim. Anyway, if you don’t plan to spend a lot of time indoors the place is fine. Bring a mattress topper because mattresses are very hard. Beach and decks are beautiful!

Great location in the heart of Duck. Shopping restaurants all in walking distance Overall inside of condo needs updates. Carpet/flooring very outdated wood paneling on walls could be painted.

Room was fine but walls very thin. Clearly heard neighbors talking AND snoring every single evening. Pool and beach access both great. Folks friendly. Again, snoring was very irritating night after night.

It was a great location and facility. Walking distance to Duck and the towns shopping and restaurants. Activities the resort puts on are great for families. The pools were never over crowded, wish they had another hot tub. Beach was good but crowded(but it was middle of July) Room needs updating and a little more kitchen supplies could be updated as well. More comfortable mattresses would be good. Overall it was a good experience and price for 5 days wasn’t bad for Outer Banks

Resort Good.....Room Ok

My son and I stayed at the resort and we enjoyed it and will come back however, a couple things about our room needed addressed. 1. The bed was terribly uncomfortable. It was absolutely the most uncomfortable mattress I have ever slept on. 2. There was a hole burnt through the bathroom sink countertop.

The good was a very nice pool with lots of kids activities. We enjoyed our stay and want to come back however, we will try a different room next year.

You get what you pay for if not a timeshare owner

The pictures online don't match what you are actually going to be staying in. Also we were advertised ocean view and were told that is only for timeshare owners. For the price not bad though and the outdoor pool is absolutely amazing

You can’t beat the amenities and location. That part is fantastic. The suite & resort were clean and well-maintained. The mattress, however, was the worst I think I’ve ever slept on. (The sleeper sofa had a better mattress.) The suite needs better window coverings. The room was already bright by 5:30am after tossing and turning on that mattress. The Expedia post I booked from showed a suite with a full kitchen, not the mini-fridge & microwave my suite had. Everything else was great.

I would stay there again for the right price, but I would plan time to go to Walmart if I needed to pick up a bed topper and bring a sleep mask. I would also call ahead to verify the type of kitchen my unit will have.
