We really enjoyed our stay at the Zarenhof. The room was clean, the bed comfortable and the staff were super helpful and friendly. The location is awesome with shops, bars and restaurants close by and trams 1, 10 and 12 and U Bahn line 2 right outside. The apartments may be a little old and tired but that didn't detract from a super stay.

First impressions when we arrived: very nondescript entrance, graffiti on the outside wall. The area was a little run down. Reception was a very small area. Once we got to the rooms, however, they were fine - clean, comfortable and quite spacious. As you had to go through one courtyard to a second one, it was very quiet even though the area was busy. The area itself is quite bustling - plenty of places to eat nearby, and a U-Bahn station 100 yards away. In a nutshell: I highly recommend as it’s not expensive and is comfortable, clean and quiet - and also it’s so easy to get around the city from here.

The hotel itself is accessed from the street after passing through a dark and trashy archway that opens into what can best be described as a low-income housing, with visible trash cans, a myriad number of bikes and leaves cluttering the property. The hotel is attached to this structure by passing through the archway, and the scary looking backside of the apartment building. This opens onto a red-carpeted walkway with gaudy gold statues. On the plus side, the hotel is very comfortable, with a nice breakfast buffet. The Prenzlaur Berg area is very funky, lots of good, reasonable restaurants and little 'boutiques'. Outside of the street the hotel is on, the vibe is more Lower East Side New York or Hell's Kitchen. The street where the hotel is located is pretty safe because there is a lot of foot traffic - it just is not the type of plus that appeals to elderly people. In my 20s and 30s I would have loved it.

The breakfast daily was so diverse and very fulfilling. There were so many options including light fare and some more heavier fulfilling items. I had a little bit of everything and it filled me for the day until dinner time. The deco of the hotel is like something from a past century. The courtyard is so quaint. It felt like I was staying in a neighborhood local place instead of a hotel. I loved the area surrounding the hotel. Such a great neighborhood! The staff mostly only spoke in German, but they were kind and patient with my English only skills. I will stay again here if I could.

I liked the location as it is near public transportation and many restaurants. It is set back far enough from the street that it is quiet. The rooms are spacious about 350 to 400 square feet. The breakfast buffet is impressive with a big selection. The property is rundown and in need of a facelift. Overall it is good value compared to the other hotels most of which were higher priced.

This hotel is conveniently located and the front desk staff was friendly and helpful.
We were only given one room key which was problematic when we wanted to go in different directions, but we worked it out. If you are looking for a good location to stay during your trip to Berlin, in a hotel with comfortable beds then this hotel is for you. I would consider this a three star hotel by American standards.

Wi-Fi had serious problems, dropping every few minutes. Signal strength was fine; it's more likely they have a bad setup using repeaters which aren't getting a good signal from the source (I work in IT and setup routers).

I brought this issue up to the front desk on my 2nd day: the guy at the desk called the manager, but nothing they could do. At check out the next day, I said I'd appreciate a partial refund for the problems. The person working the desk (either the owner or the owner's brother, based on a prominently display portrait at reception) handled the situation extremely poorly: \"This is the first I've heard of it.\" \"I'll have to talk to the manager.\" (picked up the phone, didn't actually talk to anyone). \"How about a bottle of wine?\" (I was headed to the airport.) When he finally got to the point of recognizing I wanted an actual refund, and asked me how much, I suggested 20 euros. He became irate, swearing, commenting that \"Wi-Fi didn't even exist 10 years ago!\" (it did), and finally *throwing* a 10 euro note at me (I had to pick it up off the floor). The Wi-Fi situation was bad, but the way he dealt with this made it so much worse.

For the price, a spacious room with a nice little balcony overlooking a quiet internal courtyard. Very handy location, close to the u-bahn, and a reasonable walk into the centre. The wifi was over-stretched in the evening, but overall an excellent stay.

Great staff and very friendly, and for Berlin, that is something special. The rooms were somewhat dated, but the convenience to the ubahn was perfect. The rooms do not have AC, but it cooled down nicely at night, and since the hotel has a wonderfully quiet courtyard, we could leave the windows open. The best part was the breakfast - worth every euro!

I loved the location of the hotel which was only a couple of stops from Alexanderplatz on the UBahn in a buzzy but not noisy area. My room was a double with a balcony. The whole hotel had an old world feel but wasn’t old fashioned. The WiFi works and there are plenty of plug sockets for recharging phones etc.

This hotel is in a very fun part of town, Prenzlauerberg, and at \"ground zero\" of several train lines and a major subway line. It's ablaze with cafe's and shops in all directions. The hotel itself is part of a multi-courtyard classic 6 story Berlin apartment complex, so while it is totally a hotel, you almost feel like you're renting a classic 1910 prewar apartment for a week. All the internal rooms have nice balconies.

Different type of hotel set in traditional courtyard building, rooms have kitchen unit, fridge and safe at no extra cost. Reception is in separate shop front on street. You come and go without going through a lobby. Like having your own apartment in Berlin. Best position for transport being next to U bahn station and two tram lines. Lively area with restaurants and night life. Ublike the mitte this is a taste of real Berlin living.

Great location

The location is great. The front entrance is on a busy street, but the building itself is set way back (in the style of Berlin courtyards) so that it is fairly secluded. The transportation links are great - the U2 U-bahn line and the M1, M12, and M10 tram lines are similarly close. I ended up using the M1 line to get most of the tourist sites, the M10 runs directly to the Hauptbahnhof train station, and it is easy to get to Tegel airport using the U2 line (followed by a transfer to the S-bahn and a transfer to the airport bus).

There are plenty of restaurants around, although many of them seem to cater to lower end tourists.

The hotel upgraded me to a larger room with a small kitchenette. I find hotel breakfasts in general to have way too much food, so I saved some money by buying some food items from a nearby supermarket and preparing my own breakfast.

The WiFi worked sporadically, but it was not a major issue for me because I picked up a German SIM card.

Three night stay for Birthday celebration

Considering the hotel was on a main road with a very busy junction and opposite the U train station, there was little traffic noise as the bedrooms are in a courtyard. Whilst we were there some improvement work was being undertaken and there was scaffolding and netting around the front of the bedrooms but we were not troubled by early morning noise as work was between the hours 9am to 5pm and no drilling whilst we were there. We didn't have breakfast at the hotel but plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby.

Great location and quiet rooms

The staff were very friendly and the apartment was well-kept and quiet. The location is great if you want to stay in Prenzlauer Berg with short U-Bahn rides to the rest of the city. I didn't realise that I was booking through a third party who can't be contacted and doesn't offer refunds so I would recommend that you book directly with the hotel rather than through HomeAway as the hotel is great but the use of third-party US-based agencies has put me off using HomeAway in future.

Twice we wenet to reception and no one was there. we anted to discuss the room and changing it. One time we also went the queue was so long we knew we would be there 20 minutes waiting and needed to get to an appointment. Our main disappointment was the noise from the courtyard disturbed our sleep and also there was no accessible balcony despite our specifically booking such a room and this being a reason for choosing the hotel given it was a summer in berlin. also one of our towels was removed but not replaced with a fresh one so we had to bath with a hand towel.

Peace in the middle of Berlin

This hotel has the rare gift of being able to to deliver an inner city experience without the usual noise from a buzzing inner city. That is because whilst the the entrance to the hotel is on a main road, that entrance takes you into an enclosed forecourt behind which the hotel sits. And that distance from the main road is enough to deliver a peaceful visit. So the picture you can see of the red carpet is the one of the inside area, which you can't see from the road.
The location is excellent in terms of getting around Berlin. There is a tram passing by which takes you down to the river in 10 minutes and there are trains and buses all around. We will visit again.

I liked this place and would in fact stay again. We booked several months ago but ended up with one of the gloomier 'superior' rooms, and we had a problem with a temperamental extractor fan in the (windowless) bathroom. The bathroom also smelled of, well it was not very nice. It had been cleaned but needed, we thought, a serious deep clean. I think this is a good three star hotel, but not a 4 star as claimed.

This was a great hotel. The hotel staff at the front desk were helful during check in and check out. They helped me with the wifi and to get a tour of the city. THe Breakfast buffet was excellent. PLeant of variety and quality products. The espresso was excellent. Freash pastries and brads. YOgurt and granola. The room was spacious and I liked the bathroom amenities. The location was across from two train stations and close to the bus tours of the city.

I had just travelled close to 20 hours so was grateful for any room at that point. I booked a room with a double bed but got a room with a single bed. I was pleasantly surprised with the kitchenette as I wasn't expecting that but the fridge did not work. I stayed two nights and then moved on. The location is really good and there is a luggage room to store luggage if needed. The breakfast is expensive but was a nice treat one morning. There are several cafes, restaurants, and grocery stores within a couple blocks walk and it's very close to Mauerpark.

Tranquil spot in busy Berlin

Perfectly placed for easy access to city attractions. Ubahn outside the door! Reception on main road but hote roomsl set back behind in tranquil courtyard. Various options of accommodation. Booked room with kitchenette as visiting family nearby for a week. Restaurant available for breakfast but bought our own. No bar but who needs that with all the great restaurants and beer gardens in the city! All rooms seem to have balcony and so peaceful... Very quiet at night. Room always immaculate on return.

Budget friendly hotel in a good neighborhood. Excellent transportation hub right outside takes you to the city center in 5-10 minutes . You bypass the front desk and enter a private courtyard with several seating areas via a side door in true Berlin style. The rooms while not fancy are clean and cozy with a large bathroom and safe for your laptop etc. Opt for the room with the kitchenette and balcony! Breakfast buffet available but I made my own and ate on my balcony. Lots of dining options in the area as well. As a person of color who doesn't speak German I felt quite welcome here and in the great city of Berlin in general.

Great location, but positives mostly end there. the customer agent desk somewhat unhelpful -- we asked for a fairly reasonable 12pm checkin (not too early), but they demanded 15 euros in a very curt manner -- responded to our cordial email request with a curt response, and in bad German grammar to say the least. also the hotel rooms are actually physically deep inside an inner courtyard, with rough cobblestones over which we had to pull our heavy luggage. there was no luggage cart, or any bell hop available to help with luggage. Its pretty self service. and the maid didn't speak any German nor any English when asked anything. that said, our upgraded suite was sizeable and comfortable at least. overall, it felt more like a pseduo-dormitory-hotel complex, rather than a real hotel per se.

Right across from the U-Bahn station. Located in the heart of Prenzlauer Berg, which is by far the most artsy district of Berlin. Great food options. 10 min train ride from Mitte. Very friendly staff. Clean. Room is quiet and basic. It has a cooking range, a fridge, kettle and coffee maker. WiFi works great.

Needless to say, I will certainly stay here again the next time I visit Berlin.

Excellent, in the great neighbourhood of Prenzlauer Berg. Berlin Wall memorial is a short distance away, a 'must visit' site. The Eberswalder Strasse U-bahn is right across the street, providing fast and efficient service, and access to just about anywhere a visitor to Berlin would want to go.
Staff very friendly and welcoming. Their English was good which was handy, since my German is terrible. Room comfortable and warm. Cooking and drinks facilities. Shops close by and great eateries. Locals friendly.
Not a lot of parking space around- not a problem for me, but beware if you are using a car.

Hotel is located in a great location for transport around the city being right next to the subway and tram links etc. Alexander Plats is a couple of stops away or you can catch the tram M10 to the Brandenburg Gate, takes about 10-15 minutes. Hotel is classically designed & clean. The hotel is located in a court yard environment so lovely & quite but as soon as you walk out the door you have a multitude of bars & restaurants to chose from. Would certainly recommend.

Cool but Got Lost

Its cool staying in what seems to be historic soviet housing. There's a sense of history. It's also in a really cool neighborhood with lots of good food. That being said the place itself needs some fixing. I also thought the entrance was very weird. The front desk is not where the front doors are.

Weekend break

An excellent hotel set back within a courtyard from a busy main road. The quietest hotel I have ever stayed in. Very private, comfortable and clean. Does not have lounge area and chose not to have breakfast. Kitchenette area in room excellent and facilities available to cook if you wished. Reception is on the main street and always someone there to help. Visiting family nearby so was perfectly placed. Good shopping area and close to all public transport. Would definitely recommend.

Cozy hotel w free wifi and near train station

Stayed here for 1 night before leaving Berlin and it was great. Hotel is right next to the s bahn and surrounded by many nice restaurants and convenience shops. The check in area is on the main road but hotel is further back in a nice courtyard. The room itself was nice and comfortable. It has a small kitchenette and balcony overlooking the courtyard. Really nice and cozy. The bathroom was nice and the shower was amazing! Overall would stay here again

Nice location and clean rooms

Very nice location walking distance (15-20 minutes) from alexander platz. Rooms are clean and comfortable. The structure itself is a bit old but never tried any other hotels in Berlin (yet).

Excellent Apartment Style Hotel

This is an apartment style hotel, so reception has limited hours. It does serve breakfast but little else. The locality is great, and the hotel very good. I liked it very much and would almost certainly stay here again when in Berlin. If you like a full service hotel with room service and endless other things this may not be the place for you.
