The first room offered to us smelled of mould and was tiny although I paid for a standard room. I booked the room quite in advance so they can't say it was the last available one. I asked to change and the second room was above the night club where the loud music played until 5am. There is no coffee, or tea, or water in the room. Very bad experience

The hotel looks nice throughout and it’s in a fantastic location for exploring Tallinn with it being right in the Old Town.

The staff were all very friendly and helpful.

The room was spacious and comfortable. No frills but the quality and location made the price a great deal.

The only downside was you will need to bring earplugs if the nightclub in the basement is open. I arrived on a Saturday night and my room was on the 4th floor but the music continued till about 4am. Thankfully, I had earplugs and it didn’t bother me much. Sunday night was fine because the club was closed.

I didn’t do the breakfast but peaked in. It looked in line with average.

The front staff person was pleasant but not overly talkative; that's fine though. The path to the room wound through cool corridors and beautiful rooms. The room isn't was quaint and the nearest part was that the bathroom floor is heated, so no cold feet after a shower. The beds were comfortable the room clean.

The location is fantastic. The property feels old, which may be by design for its location. The night staff was a little snarky when i arrived just before midnight. But the young woman who was at the front desk during the day was phenomenal. She was super helpful and friendly. The accommodations are good, though i could hear the guest in the room next door snoring! :)

On location, this is a sure win.

Right in old town and very affordable! The building itself is very charming, and the staff are very helpful if you have any issues. The cleanliness is questionable, but taking the age of the hotel and the price it’s forgivable. The breakfast buffet is kind of dismal, I would just stick to the poppyseed rolls and coffee, but maybe it depends on the day.

Baltic family vacation.

Staff was very friendly when we checked in late at night and they were all prepared for us when we arrived. In the morning the free breakfast was very tasty and plentiful. Bedroom was very clean and they put us on the floor we requested. Hotel is in the heart of all the activity and tourist spots are walkable.

A quirky converted property with old features. It is in the old town with plenty of cafes and a 24 hour shop close by. It is also handy for the ferry terminal from which you can get to Helsinki in 2 hours. OK breakfast in a room upstairs, not suitable if you have mobility problems.

Lovely old building, clean and tidau, breakfast was good. Reception was helpful. Location is perfect.

Only negatives were that we were on 5th floor. Which is a bit of a hike, especially with luggage. Also it was really hot on a night, I ended up opening the window despite it being - 8 outside. But understandable because it's such an old building but may not be for everyone.

The location of the property is perfect. Very close to town square with plenty of wonderful restaurants close by and 24 hour convenient store on the corner. Lots of fun finding short cut tunnels through Old City Tallin and short cut stairwells through the hotel “maze”. Beds were comfortable. Bathroom was small but good hot water although poor ventilation. Rooms were warm and toasty. Floors in hotel room were dirty and we used the bath towels to wipe down the floors ourselves. I wish they would have vacuumed or mopped before we arrived which was late at 1800.

The hotel is old and therefore it is not new, logically. That’s why I don’t understand people complaining about the hotel not being modern.. it’s not modern because it’s old and it should be like that. The hotel was amazing. The only thing I didn’t like was the guy at the reception could do better to arrange early breakfast for me and my partner, which we didn’t get at all. Ok, I get it, we were 2h late to ask for it. But the service should be the same at 1 star hotel and 5 stars hotel - staff should always give their best. If guests ask for a simple sandwich and you have a huge kitchen 50m away from you, you go and make a sandwich and it is very simple, or I don’t know, you do something, you still had 10 hours to figure it out how to make it possible. I mean, it’s a small thing, I will buy a sandwich somewhere else (which I later did), no problem, but it’s the small things that make everyone’s stay better. And if you can do it, you do it, you don’t try to find excuses not to do it. Other than that and a very small room (502), everything else was amazing. It was very clean, thank you whoever was taking care of our room! Breakfast was amazing! Cheers! <3

Perfect location and nice old style concept for the property. Unfortunately quite few cons...
The service was not the best, a bit cold.
The rooms are small and \"old\" not only in the style - the bathrooms frozen as lacking of an heating system.
We changed room because of some bad smell and could choose between 2 available: 1 with less smell, the other one where somebody just smoked in.
Basic breakfast, didn't really satisfied us in quality and choices.

Good Points :
Location, location, location - just a couple of minutes walk from the old town square and not far from the station, covered market and large supermarket.

Not so Good :
We got off on the wrong foot when, having booked and paid for a triple room, we were allocated a small double. When we returned to check-in to point this out we were told the hotel was full, so they would bring a folding bed for the third adult in our party (to an already small room?). It was only when I started making a fuss that a triple room was identified. Sadly, not the first time I have had this issue with booking triple rooms at hotels.

The room itself was \"adequate\". The two chairs appeared to have seen better days, there was one bedside light between 3 (which didn't work anyway), and the 4:3 format TV must have been a good decade old. No tea/coffee making facilities and the availability of hot water was unpredictable but Wifi provision was fine. On the one day we had our room \"made up\" we received new towels and one of the three beds was made (?).

The breakfast buffet was a little disappointing for those who like a hot breakfast. Hot mini-hot dog sausages, a type of egg flan and a couple of bowls of local dishes, although there were cold alternatives.

Overall, there was nothing of huge consequence that was wrong with our stay, but in my opinion if you are expecting a four star hotel you are likely to find St. Olav a little underwhelming.

It’s situated in Old Town in Tallinn and it’s an old building. Floor makes lot of noises when walking and which disturbed when sleeping. Breakfast was ver poor. Not much to select and coffee machines was out of order at the breakfast buffet. Only one thermos was there with coffee and had to wait in long queue to get a cup of coffee. No free water bottles in the room.

Nice, clean and comfortable hotel in the old city.

I stayed in this hotel with my friend and two teenage kids. On the morning of our stay, I wrote to the customer service and requested both rooms to be close to each other and with separate beds. When we arrived, the stuff fulfilled our request completely. We really liked our stay there. The rooms and bathrooms were very clean. The furniture was on older side but comfortable... after all the hotel is in a historic building and we really enjoy that medieval, authentic feel. Also the combination of the hotel’s location (in the old city) and a very reasonable price for it is difficult to bit. Finally, the breakfast (which was included in the price) exceeded our expectations... a nice buffet with a lot of food choices. We’ll definitely stay there again.

The Hotel is very tired, moved to 3 different rooms, RM125 courtyard, people walking past continuously and smelt damp, RM130 if you like sleeping with the noise of a night club booming until 5am then this the room for you, RM408 where we ended up, through a maze of corridors and up lots of narrow stairs! No lifts in the hotel so if you struggle with your mobility then this is not the hotel for you. When everyone is showering, you end up with no water due to pressure. Breakfast is terrible unless of course you like boiled potatoes and stew!

The building itself was very nice. The corridors and outer rooms were very ornate.

Our room itself was basic to say the least. No wardrobe. Had to change the first room due to unpleasant smell. Second room was cold and the beds were extremely uncomfortable. Also questioned how clean the sheets were as there were stains.

Staff not friendly. The barman was never welcoming and just told us the bar was closed whatever time we tried to use it.

A very interesting labyrinth of a building, well maintained with interesting art and furniture in communal areas.
Our bedroom was long with grand furniture & fittings but over the weekend it was very lively and loud in the corridors throughout the night & from parties which made for a bad sleep before an early flight.
Good location for exploring the old town, the breakfast had plenty of choices.
Worth a weekday stay to experience the quirky style & historical building.

Tallin was beautiful. The only complaint about St Olav is that the inter room sound insulation is inadequate. We could hear the person next door talking on the phone, his TV and he could hear my husband snoring - lots of ‘banging on the wall’ during the night!

Over many years we have stayed in a lot of hotels but nothing compares to the St. Olav. Without doubt the quirkiest hotel we have ever seen. Simply loved our stay from start to finish, staff without exception were very pleasant, friendly and helpful. The location was perfect for all areas of old Tallinn and advice regarding things to do and see was readily forthcoming. OK so its not the Hilton but in our opinion much more fun.

Overall hotel is nice. Good location. Working walking distance to everything what needed.
Minuses - always something broken, if you are an early bird - you have to run to shop around the corner to get coffee, as coffee mashine always broken. I stayed there second time, and second time at 7am had to run to local shop to get a coffee.
Friday, Saturday - always party and noise inside hotel. It can be either birthday, or wedding or anything else. And can’t fall asleep. Have to wait when all of this will finish. And have to wait till about midnight.

If you're looking for a unique experience you'll find it at St. Olav Hotel. The historic building is like nothing I've ever stayed at before and was impressive to just walk around inside. The rooms were very comfy and the services (including breakfast) were fantastic. I will certainly be staying here on my next visit to Tallinn.

You need to be fit to stay here

The hotel location is very handy in the centre of the old town. The decore is tired looking & in need of a refurb. There is a mixture of reasonable rooms & completely unsatisfactory rooms which have no wardrobe, no window, or issues with smelly drains.
There are no lifts in this hotel, but lots of stairs. You need to be a mountain goat to carry your luggage up the steep stairs to reach the rooms at the top of the hotel.
Not only is there a mixture of rooms but also a mixture of attitudes from staff. One or two staff are really helpful & completely understand customer service, while some staff members need to look for careers elsewhere as hospitality is not their strength.

No internet in Rooms. Maintenance worker clueless

Hotel is perfectly located and Breakfast was fantastic. Rooms simple but comfortable and clean. Internet in my room did not work and expressed this all three of the days that I was there and received blank stares from the staff working the front desk. Tried to do work in the open foyer where the internet worked for the the whole hotel but was noisy, full of smokers and loud maintenance being performed. The maintenance person was oblivious to guests. Destroyed all the other positives the hotel had to offer.

Quirky Hotel

If you like old buildings with oak beams, uneven floors and steep narrow stairs the higher you go then this is the place for you. I happen to like that sort of thing. Bed not very comfy but you can cope with that purely for the character of the place. Many thanks to German who was always the man with the info when you needed it.
Tallinn old town is beautiful and I highly recommend a visit.

Very small room with no storage, noise from the front door keeps you awake, safety deposit box not fixed to anything so could walk away with it, TV remote broken. Had to climb over bed to get to the other side. Bare wires exposed on extension lead. Had to walk through smoking shelter to enter and exit hotel, poor breakfast.

The hotel is in a brilliant location- the old town. Easy access to restaurants ans shops. The hotel itself looks a bit tired. The room was big enough and clean but did not have enough storage space. A second bed side table or a chest drawer/shelves would have helped. We had only 4 hangers in the wardrobe. Breakfast was included however we did not eat in the hotel. The buffet did not look very appetizing and all the hot dishes were empty. Do not rely on breakfast in this hotel. Some of the staff was helpful others not so much. Overall we enjoyed our stay in this quirky hotel.

Perfect place to stay in Tallinn Old Town

On arrival the receptionist was very friendly and welcoming. This was the same experience with all other staff that I met over my 2 days stay. Located in the center of the Old Town, this meant that all of the beautiful sights of Tallinn were a short walk away.

A place with charm and character

Hotel is located in an excellent location, 2 mins walk to the center square and just next to the path way to the higher part of the old town. This hotel looks like an old castle with plenty of weird passage ways to get to your room, old paintings on the wall everywhere and unique furniture pieces. great for a couple of days stay, if you are looking for something thats not a regular hotel chain experience.

The hotel does not have an elevator/lift, so if you have lots of luggage and/or are mobility challenged, then find another hotel. There are a lot of narrow staircases and uneven floors. No frills rooms, dont expect the TV to work... wifi, works in some rooms but due to the layout of the hotel its tough to get a strong signal everywhere.

Great location

We spent two nights at this hotel. Location was very central. Lots of restaurants in the area. There was a fridge in the room which was useful. The bed was very comfortable, but the bathroom wasn't ideal. There was a hand held shower head attached to the bath- no separate shower, and the bathroom pipes had a strong smell. The breakfast was very nice. Despite the negatives with the bathroom, I would still stay again.

The reception was using his computer when we arrived and ignored us for a minute and a half then looked up and said check-in starts in half an hour then carried on with his computer.

In general the hotel was ok, the bedroom was a reasonable size but there was limited storage. The bed was against the wall so on that side you had to crawl over the bed.

Breakfast was reasonable with cooked food which was luke warm and there were the usual cold buffet foods. There was tea, coffee and watery fruit juices.

The hotel is well located about 5 minutes walk from the main square.

The number 4 tram will get you from the airport to the bottom of the Main Street then the hotel is about 10-15 minutes walk from there.

There is free wifi but our room had no reception and the male receptionist refused to let us change rooms. Our room was at the back of the hotel surrounding a courtyard where people were drinking and being rowdy late into the night so we couldn't sleep and again the receptionist refused to do anything about it. Also in the hotel booklet in our room, it stated that if you would like to have breakfast earlier, to let the reception know before 5pm and they will arrange it. We were going to check out very early in the morning so we approached them around 3.10pm and the receptionist said the kitchen is closed and they can't arrange it for us. We asked him why does it say otherwise in the booklet and he refused to give a sufficient answer and told us it wasn't possible. So basicallly we were treated like dirt and told to leave without any breakfast. Our stay was a terrible experience and not worth a single cent.

Had to wait until exactly two pm to check in and then a large tour group came in. Clerk jumped to assist them even though we had been waiting. He could have had us fill out the immigration papers I advance, especially since center he new he had a large group coming get in. He was not helpful with taxi questions.

We were supposed to go out for dinner but the hotel didn't have have an iron (despite their listing saying \"laundry\"). When I asked the front desk the lady was most unhelpful, \"do you have an iron? Where could find one?\", response \"no, wouldnt know\". Breakfast was average and the staff seemed to be having a bad day because nobody smiled or even acknowledge our presence. This is a great old hotel recently renevated and in a great location, but unfortunately the services is below average.

Decent but disappointing

Overall the place was ok. We stayed in a single room with a queen bed on the first floor near the common area. The place appeared to be rather outdated and upon entering the room we noticed that the place was small and cozy but furnished with rather old items. The furniture was adequate and functioned appropriately. The bed was well used and we tended to congregate in the ceter of the bed do to the bed bowing in the middle. The bathroom was small with the stairs cutting through part of the ceiling above the shower. The shower drain was pluged and would fill up to the ankle in minutes. The tv was old and didn't work. The rooms didn't suppress noise well. The breakfast was pitiful (powedered egg, hotdog, pickle, etc). Despite the rooms flaws it is conveniently located in oldtown for sightseeing and exploring. It is off the main drag wich is nice but there is a club in the basement and a stripclub next door. There is a small store with drinks (alcoholic and non) and snacks just down the street.

Overall the place was alright as we only stayed there to sleep and were gone most of the time. I feel that it is a little overpriced for the quality of the establishment. I would stay here again but not before exploring other options in the area.

Strip clubs, which is located right next to the hotel, visitors and staff are smoking and are being very loud right at the hotel entrance.
When we stayed every room didn't have a pleasant smell to it - poop smell everywhere!

I had stayed here 2 other times, & enjoyed my stay. The only other time, previous to this trip, was on halloween, which was terribly noisy & couldn't sleep at all. On this trip, I stayed 10 days, & was quite disappointed. The reason was that for almost every evening, the noise from the nightclub owned by the hotel was out of control! I couldn't sleep at all, & became sick, as did my son. Apparently guests had left their children in common areas, unattended, while they went to nightclubs.

Comfortable hotel, in a great spot in the Old Town

Really nice hotel, in a great location in the Old Town. Friendly and helpful staff. Simple but tasty breakfast. Only one complaint was that the taxi booked by the hotel to return to the airport charged almost €15, instead of the €10 it cost from the airport to the hotel. Not a criticism of the hotel, this is just to make them aware that this driver was clearly over charging. Overall a very positive experience.

An underground cellar!

It was terrible. The room I was given was an underground cellar without a window . I had to beg for a room with a window, eventually and with reluctance was given a tiny room with no space to walk round the bed and a wall directly outside the window.On arrival I asked for a kettle, was told I couldn't have one but I could have hot water any time. At 20:15 I went down to reception to ask for hot water, the smiling lady explained that she didn't have the key to the cupboard with the kettle! The rooms were freezing cold! Following morning at reception 2 men pushed a heavy laundry trolley over my foot. No one apologised. Later I was given a bar of chocolate!!! I was disgusted by all the receptionists attitude and am not able to recommend it. However, the inside of the building is very unusual and worth a look

An unpleasant night's stay

Having spent one night at this hotel with my girlfriend and initially being impressed by the quality of the room, we were shortly disappointed over the course of the night. With a nightclub situated underneath the hotel and being placed in a room on the ground floor we would have expected more sound proofing. This was far from the case, in fact we had to request a new room at 1am because the noise was so bad. While this request was dealt with, I had to call on 3 separate occasions as the receptionist unexpectedly hung up each time.We were only told that the nightclub would close at 5am on making this call and in no way were we fore warned when booking the hotel or when being greeted. The room certainly had some plus points, it was comfortable and the bathroom was clean and well equipped. Nonetheless our sleepless night vastly overweighed these positives.

Older hotel in the city center. Would stay here again but probably only for shorter trips. Very quiet mixed with thin walls meant that we could easily hear our neighbors. Fair price for the accommodations and great location.

great location but...

The location of the hotel is great for strolling around Tallinn, but our room was on the 4th floor without a lift. It was rather hard to carry a suitcase up and down.
The room has one small window, so it was very stuffy. WiFi was occasionally very slow.

Would definitely stay there again if in Tallinn the only downside I have about the hotel is there is no lift and lots of narrow stairs ok if u only have a rucksack but not for a heavy suitcase like I had

Severely disappointing service and facilities.

The thing that annoys me most about this hotel was that, upon departure, I asked reception to call a taxi and they called a dodgy one - I am not even sure that it was legitimate company - which grossly overcharged. (Double the standard flag drop rate, starting fare well over flag drop rate, meter running fast, etc.) Apart from that, the breakfast was just depressing, the building a fire-trap, and the room stuffy/dingy.

Great cosy hotel , perfect location in old town

This is a really great hotel, me and my girlfriend really enjoyed it, it's location is perfect in the heart of the old town.
The hotel has a great cosy feel to it and is so close to all the main sites. The room and the bathroom were very clean and the breakfast was wonderful in the morning. A couple of drawbacks would be the soundproofing it can be a bit noisy at times but we were told the hotel is like that at reception. Also in the restaurant I tried to order food at 8.15 on the Sunday evening but was told that the ovens were switched off, even though the restaurant closes at 9. On the whole though a very nice hotel and a great price , I would certainly recommend a stay here to my friends.

Tallinn old town.

Fab place to stay in the middle of the old town, with the trams and the trains a short walk away.
Breakfast is served till late morning at the weekends so you don't have to rush to get there.
Almost everyone speaks English very well and everyone we met have a warm welcome.
A good place to see for a long weekend or fit more in over a week.

Nice hotel close to everything in the old city

Very pleasant personnel. We requested extra pillows and after a hour we went down to the front desk and picked it up ourselves. Very important to note that the hotel doesn't have air conditioning therefore I wouldn't be able to stay at this hotel in the summer. This hotel is very old, therefore there is no insulation between floors and you can hear everything. I travel with earplugs so it didn't bother us.

Terrible hotel. Good points, right in the centre of the old town, cheap, WiFi good and breakfast good. Bad points being kept awake 2 nights out off the 3 we stayed with loud booming music (the room shook)!!! Kept awake til 5 in the morning. Staff un-helpful couldn't care less about music or customers. Rooms also have paper thin walls, can hear everything the next room is doing talking, snoring, breathing. Apparently higher rooms don't have the noise problem but if you are staying Thurs too Saturday, you are risking it

Great location.

Hotel is located in the heart of the beautiful old town but this may not be a good thing. Rooms are very noisy and located right outside a nightclub. Slept poorly both nights as there was loud, bass music that could be heard throughout the night blasting from the clubs outside, not helped by the thin walls. Room was rather small, stuffy and cramped. The rooms are a maze to find, especially on the upper floors due to the buildings old nature. Hotel is 10 minute walk from main train station (trains were surprisingly very good). Breakfast was adequate but have had better. Price was low in comparison with previous location, but could could a lot cheaper if you're happy to take a 15 minute tram/train ride into the old town. You'll also get a quieter, better nights rest further out from the old town.

Excellent hotel with a character

Good, old and a little bit mystic hotel ;). I would highly recommend it, BUT there is a catch.
They have so called \"economy rooms\". These rooms are located under the roof. There is a tiny window on the floor and extremely low ceiling. Never book economy room in this hotel unless you want to get claustrophobia! Fortunately they changed the room for me. Standard rooms are small but nice and cozy.

If you're into history and want to be close to everything in old town, book it. Fair warning, it's an old building for the 15th century. No elevators or AC. Close to most or all historic site (walkable). Great experience.

Good hotel in the Old Town

I was initially attracted to this hotel by the location, and was not disappointed - it was very conveniently located for exploring the Old Town and Toompea Hill. The hotel staff were extremely helpful (including ordering taxis, printing out boarding passes etc) and all spoke excellent English. A very good breakfast buffet was included in the room rate, and free wi-fi was available throughout the hotel.

The only downside to the hotel (from my point of view) was that it was not as quiet as the Old Town setting might suggest - the nightclub next door and in the hotel meant that there was a lot of noise well into the early hours of the morning. But those producing the noise sounded as though they were having a great time, so this needn't deter others :)

Disappointing hotel in great location

The hotel was disappointing in most respects.
Whilst I knew at the time of booking that my room would be small, it was even smaller than I anticipated. It was a 'small double' that was really only suited to being a single.
Finding the room was a bit like walking around an old castle! There was no lift and some staircases were quite narrow. There was also a low beam across a corridor that I had to duck under! None of these were mentioned in the hotel description, and some older, less mobile, people would be disappointed to encounter these problems and would find it difficult to get to their room.
The buffet style breakfast was poor to average, and very disappointing for a hotel of this standard, and the price paid! There were no fruit juices available, only squash/cordial type drinks, and there were only two choices of cereal. There was a choice of four hot dishes, but these were poor, and not even replenished. The only eggs available were hard boiled, and there was no bacon or even pancakes. The cold meat and cheese were of average quality with only two types of (processed) meat, and one type of cheese. There was not even a toaster.
The breakfast 'waiting' staff were very poor, and were the subject of a complaint by yours truly! They were too quick to take things away from the tables, even when the restaurant was very quiet. They actually took away food from my place on THREE occasions during one breakfast, despite being told not to after the second time!

Pros and cons, but worth it

My wife and I stayed at St. Olav for a weekend. It's a very interesting old hotel with seemingly endless corridors and stairways filled with art and antique furniture (easy to get lost in, which we almost did a few times, but it was part of the fun). We stayed on the 5th floor, no elevators, so just getting up to our room was a bit of an adventure! The room was nice and clean, despite being a bit small (slanted ceilings like an attic on the top floor), had a mini fridge with a fully stocked bar (if you want to pay hotel prices for mini bottles of wine, which we didn't) and the bed was pretty comfortable, but the shower was pretty bad- it was hot, but it leaked so it had no pressure. The front desk staff wasn't very friendly.. polite, but not warm or welcoming. They did call us a taxi when we asked. The breakfast was amazing. We're both vegan and we found a lot to eat - coffee, fresh breads with home made jams, sautéed vegetables, pickled vegetables, potatoes, etc. There were also cereals, porridge, yogurt, meats, cheeses, eggs, and more. It's also really centrally located- close to shops and pretty much everything in Old Town, maybe 10-15€ by taxi from airport.
Bottom line- it's a cool old place with a few quirks, but I'd stay there again.
